Sunday Snippet

I am currently actively writing two things (which I almost never do, but after this week I just couldn't concentrate on my other WIP). This is a snippet from the second one, which will be a slightly angsty but also fluffy (willing to be corrected on this when you all yell at me) one shot. I might post one from the other WIP later, which is a bigger project.

After sliding Wille’s mug over to him, Simon made his own drink and took the seat opposite Wille. It was where they always sat, and it made something clench in Wille’s chest, either from fondness or anticipatory sadness he couldn’t tell.

Simon spun his mug one way, then the other, watching the liquid slosh with an intensity that betrayed how nervous he was. Wille wanted to reach across the table and lay a palm over Simon’s, to reassure him, to calm him. But Wille knew that that wouldn’t help. Not today. So he kept his hands to himself, and found himself tapping his own fingers on the side of his mug.

“So,” he said, not really sure where he was going to take that.

“So,” Simon repeated. He lifted his face and looked at Wille with an inscrutable expression. It made all of Wille’s insides curl up. He didn’t want to be a puzzle to Simon. It had been years since Simon hadn’t known how to figure him out. He wanted Simon to understand everything about him. He wanted—

“I’m sorry!” he blurted, panic forcing the words from his mouth. 

“You’re sorry?” Simon repeated, watching Wille’s face carefully.

nah the fandom does acknowledge it’s because of his abyss powers he became like this. they believe it more especially after seeing the effect on chasca etc

YEAH everyone acknowledges he became this way because of the abyss but what i'm talking about is like. his character stories make it sound like he gained some sort of cognitohazard Strife Effect that makes chaos constantly break out around him and i've never seen anyone talk about THAT.

Specifically these lines:

In those three months, the swordswoman taught Tartaglia how to pass through the Abyss unhindered, and more importantly, nurtured the ability to stir up endless havoc from within Ajax's trouble-mongering nature.

Shocked by Ajax's great strength and curious about how he invariably became the eye of a vortex of discord, Pulcinella inducted Ajax into the Fatui under the pretext of meting out punishment, ordering him to start from the bottom and take up the duty of serving the Tsaritsa.

Kind of make it sound like it's not an effect of his personality but rather some sort of passive aura he's exerting.

Of course, the reason no one talks about this could well be because it makes no fucking sense, when his personality itself is already quite sufficient to explain all the fights he gets into.

...Could also easily be a case of me interpreting lore way too literally again lol

Gem and Pearl chatted lightly about the WL finale on Pearl's Dec 4th stream (here) and now we know what they meant.

Among references to Pearl's wet catness, at 1:55:30:

Gem: We're both a little bit pathetic in wild life, it's fine.

Pearl: I don't know if you can call yourself pathetic, Gem. I really don't-

Gem: I think-I think I was pathetic yesterday [in the finale.]

Pearl: You reckon?

Gem: I mean I've got like the biggest target on my back ever so it's like doomed, but I think it was a little bit pathetic

Pearl: mmmmm I don't want to spoil anything otherwise I would have a full blown conversation about why you think that. But also I can't. [because spoilers]

So why'd they say all that? Spoiler analysis ahead!

Gem lost her final life to the wildcard all alone at her base, which isn't the most interesting death. Many of the CC's have mentioned that a boring final death sucks -- even in the same stream Pearl mentions she hesitates to fight reds cause she doesn't want to inflict a bad finale on them. Also, in the ep Gem muses that she regrets holding herself back so much from murder -- the "sweat" accusations are really getting to all the CC's I fear. Gem isn't pathetic, and had a lot of entertaining moments in her ep, but the death was unsatisfying.

Pearl hesitated to even post her finale in part because she thought it was boring / unfulfilling. The wet cat bit is funny (and she's sort of owning it?) but even its origin is messy. Due to Aussie ping (as she demonstrated earlier in the stream), it was straight up improbable to get a mace kill, no matter how much she tried. She was fighting lag the rest of the episode too due to the wildcard overload. That was on top of episodes worth of failed traps, storylines, and murder attempts, that were largely foiled by not having enough time to do them properly. Placed final 5 as always, but she suffered the whole way there and mostly just survived without getting any kills herself.

Most importantly: neither of them got to enjoy/execute their divorce arc plans. It's an ongoing problem with WL but especially noticeable in the finale. Neither of them wanted to rush things, but the series forced their hands! Joel kept interrupting with (valid) murder attempts, and Pearl actively tried saving Gem when she was getting attacked by the rest of the server. Everyone loves and longs for another Murder Camel team up, CC's included, but it just wasn't viable. They agreed to hold off on their foreshadowed 1v1 until Gem was red, where she then died right before the wildcards deactivated (when there was room for lore/rp.) Overall, they were punished for pacing things out.

And why wouldn't they feel bad after that? Gem died unceremoniously, Pearl slogged through the ep with very little payoff, and neither got to fulfill their season long arcs. And that's what everyone's here for at the end of the day: telling a good story! Life series is special for its specific brand of focusing on RP, which is why the "a gimmick an episode" format hurt so bad. The CC's aren't pathetic, the wildcards are the problem.

(I hope the CC's feel better after the positive reception they HAVE gotten from the ep, as we still enjoyed the season and storyline they did squeeze in. Joel's ep in particular was still fire inc the final fight, although I dream of the au where Gem makes it to the end with him.)

(Pearl's stream line about "wanting a full convo" says good things about the CC's examining what went wrong and why so many people walked away unsatisfied. It's also sweet that the girlies don't want each other to think they're "pathetic /srs" instead of "pathetic /wet cat." I trust Grian + co. will figure things out for (hopefully) next time.)

I think one of the most compelling aspects of Harleith to me is the fact that everything and nothing changes between them following Harley's operation, despite the difference in corporeal form. It was always bickering under the guise of flirting (or vice versa), begrudging acknowledgement of the other, and a vague, genuine curiosity of what the other is doing (if a bit one-sided on Leith's part)... and basically none of that changes after the fact. Leith might have even less to fear, at least with regards to interference from Harley. There's more on his plate compared to years past, but at least there's someone he can find a twisted sense of solace in. Teasing words spoken against flesh or wires, it doesn't matter.

Just with added ammunition in the form of, "You're playing with fire, Leith." "Oh, you'd certainly know something about playing with fire..."

No matter how many times someone tells me my writing means something to them I’m still shooketh every time

talking about art + artist things once again but for the longest time i felt a little bad over the fact that my art is pretty simple coloring/shading wise

like, one important thing about me is that i have diagnosed ADHD and i do take meds for it but only while i'm at work (cause if not i legit cannot function lmao) but when it comes to my art, since it's more of a hobby i don't like taking meds for it

which means that, if a particular drawing takes me too long, then i immediately lose interest and i cannot physically continue and it stays as a wip forever

which is why i learned to draw fast! and to color fast! and to shade fast! but it also means making detailed backgrounds or a fully rendered with light sources and shadows drawing is honestly beyond what i can do lmao

so yeah, i used to feel bad over that, as if i wasn't a good artist... especially compared to my friends who have amazing detailed art styles with amazing coloring skills

i suppose i just learned to accept that my style is simple and fast, but it's not less because of that!
