One for All and All for One: The study in complimentary and infinite (wasted) potentials
One for All and All for One: two Quirks whose history we can, in the universe of Boku no Hero Academia, treat almost as the history of society. Their users had left enormous impact on everyone in the series, and through hints we can see their influence stretching long, long back to the first appearance of the Quirks.
Neither Quirk can be considered ‘normal’, though: the ability to take away Quirks at whim and an ability to share Quirks with others (which would inevitably leave you Quirkless) are both complete anathemas to the society that by and large is half-in love with the idea of simply having a Quirk (which deserves a whole breakdown in on itself, but that’s not what I’ll be writing about here!). And yet, One For All users are all heroes, and All for One users are all villains as far as we know (written after the release of manga chapter 280).
How is that even possible? With how objectively similar they are, why aren’t they both heroes, or both villains?
Well, before we take a crack at how Horikoshi coded the Hero society that made this happen, let’s first take a look at just why I’m so surprised the two Quirks aren’t on the same ‘side’. Also, obligatory ‘spoilers ahead’ warning for everyone who’re anime-only watchers, or haven’t gotten past Meta Liberation Army arc in manga.
Purely from the activation/mechanics point of view, All for One and One for All are warped mirror images of each other. All for One functions on the assumption that a) the user knows the other person has a Quirk and b) the Quirk doesn’t have an inherent clause that disallows itself to be taken by force when it comes to taking it. One for All is the only Quirk so far that has shown the resistance to the b), as it is encoded in the very nature of the ‘share-along’ Quirk that forms the true base of One for All that it can only be given away willingly.
Why is this so important? Because All for One doesn’t only take Quirks, it’s also capable of releasing them and giving them to others, whether the recipient is willing or unwilling. In this regard, One for All is startlingly identical: it can be forced upon someone else, as long as the DNA is exchanged and the previous user is willing to give it away. This little fact is often overlooked (likely deliberately) by the existing canon in favor of emphasizing the ‘cannot be taken forcefully away’ which makes sense plot-wise, but not ethics and logic-wise.
But who knows, maybe Horikoshi is holding back on us, and One for All ends up being the ultimate villain of the story.
… yeah, not likely. But the idea is interesting, isn’t it?
Moving onto the way they interact with their users and other Quirks, One for All and All for One are again very, very different, but with a shared approximate visualization of usage behind it. The closest approximation of how they interact with other Quirks would be, in my opinion, be gravity – but two very different applications of gravity.
There are two relevant things you need to know about gravity: it is defined by the masses of an object interacting with another object, and every single object in the universe has its own gravity field. (thank you, Physics nationals I went to once, for forcing me to learn more about gravity!)
All for One is more akin to a star within a stable planetary system: it holds planets, satellites and comets (other Quirks) locked in its orbit, but any change can make all those objects lose their orbits and go wander in the deep space. Its hold is strong, but the fact still remains it can be nullified in order to give away Quirks. It’s also stable – its attraction/hold power doesn’t change with the number of Quirks taken, it simply gives it a bigger array of powers to work with.
One for All on the other hand would be closer to black hole: its gravity is so enormous even light, the fastest object in the universe, cannot escape it, and its mass (and therefore its gravity) grows stronger with every object it swallows. Once it grabs a hold of anything (its user’s other Quirk) it merges it with itself and keeps it for forever, with very little chance of it ever surfacing again as individual Quirk (unless your name is Midoriya Izuku). However, it heavily relies on the energy (other Quirks it merges with) to provide power-ups; hence the ridiculous difference between Izuku’s and Toshinori’s One for All. (also protagonst shenanigans, but we’re not going that far into metatextuality here – that needs its own essay)
So, concept-wise, One for All and All for One are again identical in the idea behind it, but drastically different in application – both still fucking scary, but what can we do here, our main protagonist and antagonist need to have OP armor around themselves.
This leads us to the probably the biggest spoiler I’ll discuss in this essay:
this panel.
In chapter 270 of manga, Shigaraki Tomura is revealed to have been passed All for One, which is a whole mindfuck in on itself that Horikoshi needs to explain stat because I’m going crazy over here with theories (!!!), but moving on. The short and extremely brief summary of what happens afterwards is: Heroes discover where Tomura is while he’s still being transferred All for One, they wreck the Nomus and facility, Shigaraki gets partial All for One and his original Quirk Decay goes absolutely nuts again, Izuku runs off to face him, and at one point point, while using Ragdoll’s Search, Shigakari utters a very strange sentence while seemingly under the influence of All for One (the Quirk):
“You will be mine… little brother.”
Moments later, Shigaraki snaps out of it and comments about Sensei (All for One) no longer being his puppeteer, that he’s making his own choices and not Sensei’s.
Here we get a stunning punch in the plexus about what we already have been hinted at during Izuku’s fight with Shinsou Hitoshi, during Kamino Ward and Joint Training Arcs:
One for All and All for One both retain the echoes of their past owners.
Now, here comes a million dollar question: is this something both the baseline ‘share’ part of One for All and All for One possess (which would further link the two Quirks, and also explain a lot of characterizations in the series so far), or is it an imprint of All for One on ‘stockpile’ part of One for All that ‘share’ part absorbed and made its own? Both possibilities are extremely intriguing and make any future possibility of unification (which was apparently Sensei’s original goal before, judging by that one panel) extremely volatile, and very intriguing if Horikoshi pursues that idea to its end.
Speaking of the man himself, now we arrive at the question that really started the whole essay here: how come it was All for One chosen to be the ultimate evil, and One for All to be ultimate good? As we’ve seen so far, both Quirks are startlingly similar; theoretically, could All for One be a ‘heroic’ Quirk and One for One for All ‘villainous’?
The answer is yes and no.
Yes, because theoretically, switching the two would still make the story work; it’d change the motivations of characters drastically, sure, and turn the story of generations of good trying defeat one evil into one good fending off generations of evil, but it’d work – and no, because that’d fundamentally change the society in which Boku no Hero Academia’s current time frame is, and society is the key underlying factor in this entire story.
Let me explain through the examples of three characters and a faction.
Midoriya Izuku is Quirkless person in a society who is, like I said at the beginning, half-in love with the idea of having Quirks – the fact that you have them makes you seem useful, someone with potential, no matter how objectively useless some Quirks inevitably can be in certain lines of work. By their standards, he’s without potential, and therefore is largely useless out of gate. Had All for One been in public eye and celebrated as Hero, he’d be the pinnacle of useful: there’d be no danger of bad reactions to donated Quirks in his DNA, and he, someone who wishes desperately for a Quirk, could easily be given a Quirk of someone who finds their life unbearable due to it.
Bakugou Katsuki, someone with extremely property-damaging Quirk, would constantly be told that if he doesn’t behave himself, he’d be sent off to All for One to have his Quirk taken away – in essence, he’d be no one special, just another kid with a Quirk. Since All for One is so visible, it’d be all too easy for parents and teachers to threaten their kids into compliance whenever they throw an over-powered tantrum with the removal of a Quirk; it’d also be a good deterrent for any Pro Heroes that existed there to not get too comfy with their jobs, because they could easily be taken out of it if they manage to anger All for One enough, which would deter some people from being Pro Heroes.
Shigaraki Tomura (Shimura Tenko), someone whose Quirk came in during an extremely traumatic event and left him so scarred mentally he was never quite the same again, could easily simply give away his Quirk and have something far less volatile and triggering if he wished so, and also have a chance of potentially one day seeing his Quirk in the hands of someone like Izuku or Melissa, who could use it to its full potential without being constantly triggered by it or being re-traumatized again and again by the society who would rail on him for having such a potentially devastating Quirk.
Meta Liberation Army (which is a poorly disguised Brotherhood of Mutants on Genosha in X-men cartoons, let’s be realistic – the whole thing about the superiority of fight-compatible Quirks was not subtle at all) would be a much smaller and a lot less influential group. The publicity of a Quirk being able to take away other Quirks would make the existence of Deika City clones very, very difficult; it’d take but one hint, one whisper of a fringe group amassing in remote location that wants to eliminate so-called ‘useless Quirks’ for All for One to act – as much of an asshole as he is, he was shown [cite] to like all kinds of Quirks, despite only keeping the ones he felt were the most useful to him.
OK, but what about them being on the same side? You might ask yourself. If they’re so similar, why not make them both on the same side?
One, drama is always more delicious if there are high personal stakes involved, and nothing gets more personal than family drama – that’s just a fact. (Kardashians, anyone?)
Two, this is shonen – openly bad guys being the protagonists isn’t often done (in mainstream at least).
Three: we need some material to make all those ‘Izuku’s related to All for One or One for All first user’ for our satisfaction before Horikoshi josses the whole thing, okay??
(no, this is certainly not a call for you to make more ‘Izuku is related to original two brothers’… but it’s heavily suggested lol)
Thank you for sticking around until the end of this essay! Have a cookie, and enjoy the hell my mind led me to during the binge-read of the last 5 released chapters of manga:

What Does Award-Winning B2B Influencer Marketing Look Like?
In a time of increased competition and uncertainty, standing out is more important than ever. Of course there's plenty of B2B marketing that stands out, but what kind performs? Is it ads, content marketing, SEO, social, ABM or influence? At TopRank Marketing we make it our business to deliver on and exceed expectations for content experiences that will inspire customers through influencer marketing. But what does award-winning B2B influencer marketing look like? How can you infuse your own campaigns with the type of powerful elements that combine to deliver stellar marketing performance? To help answer those questions, let’s take a look at two highly-successful efforts from our clients LinkedIn and Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise (ALE) to find out what common elements both campaigns share to make for decidedly uncommon success.
Award Winning B2B Influencer Marketing in Action
We were thrilled that the Association of National Advertisers (ANA) B2 Awards awarded TopRank Marketing its silver winner in the social media category, for our work with LinkedIn in the successful “LinkedIn’s Social-First Approach to Engaging Influencers & Audiences Alike” campaign, and that the 2020 Content Marketing Awards has selected TopRank Marketing as a finalist in its best content marketing program in technology, for our work with Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise (ALE) in the successful “IT Vanguard Awards” campaign. The ANA’s B2 Awards recognize the top performing B2B marketers with a unique focus on driving demonstrable business results, and in 2020 entrants submitted in 47 categories which have evolved to reflect the growing role of B2B marketing and rapid industry changes. The 2020 Content Marketing Awards recognize and award the best content marketing projects, agencies and marketers in the industry each year, recognizing all aspects of content marketing, from strategy to distribution, from design to editorial, and is the leading international awards program for corporate content creation and distribution.
LinkedIn’s Social-First Approach to Engaging Influencers & Audiences Alike
The average daily time that a user spends on social media is approximately 153 minutes (Statista). And, with 706+ million registered users (63 million of which are in decision-making positions), the LinkedIn platform presents a big opportunity for brands to engage their target audience. (LinkedIn). But reaching and connecting with both marketers and sales professionals has become increasingly difficult due to the overload of information thrown at them each day. The brand LinkedIn also faced this challenge, even on their own platform. So, in order to better reach these decision makers, LinkedIn Marketing and LinkedIn Sales Solutions set out to create a social-first campaign that would communicate authentically to then attract attention to specific LinkedIn Showcase Pages. Goals included:
Increase engagement and continue to humanize LinkedIn as a brand by partnering with well respected industry experts to share real-life struggles, stories and obstacles with a focused audience.
Drive new audiences to the targeted Showcase Pages via the influencer’s audiences (that were not already following or engaging with the LinkedIn brand).
Continue to nurture and grow relationships with the influencers themselves as part of an ongoing influencer program.
Engage the audience in-channel (versus sending to alternate content off platform).
LinkedIn Campaign Insights & Strategy
To create and optimize this social-first influencer content campaign, specific insights and strategies were leveraged:
High-level audit of the LinkedIn Marketing and Sales Showcase pages to identify the most engaging content based on:
Content Length
Topic
Visuals
Featured Influencers
Best Publishing Time/Day
Identification of best-fit target influencers based on:
Audience Relevance
Participation Likelihood
Best Stories
Relevance and/or admiration of target audience
Research into appropriate hashtags for the campaign.
Based on these insights a campaign approach was created, including:
A messaging/post formula including:
Context at the beginning of each post
Tagging the contributing influencer
Showcasing their story/insights
Utilizing hashtags
Compelling visuals
Activation of influencers when posts went live.
Influencer Content Campaign Concept
In order to better reach an overloaded audience, we focused on the idea of partnering with influencers to make professional networking more personal vs. more traditional “best practices” content that fills most professionals' social feeds. Instead, relevant influencers we asked to share real-life stories based on 3 key questions:
Describe a defining moment in your career and how it shaped you as a marketer or sales professional.
What is one thing not on your LinkedIn profile that people should know about you?
Who is one rising star in your field that you’d like to recognize? What makes them amazing?
By shifting from purely professional content to a combination of professional and personal, LinkedIn was able to better connect with the audience around their own professional opportunities and provide them a platform to engage directly with experts they respect.
B2B Social Influencer Campaign Results
Results for this influencer marketing and social media program exceeded all target goals. Below is a breakdown of the results: #MyMarketingStory
239% above reaction benchmark

LinkedIn Social Influencer Campaign Insights
The goal of this campaign was to drive authentic engagement, on platform, between LinkedIn and their customers. With over 706 million registered users including 63 million in decision-making positions, LinkedIn Marketing and LinkedIn Sales created a powerful and successful social-first campaign leveraging LinkedIn Showcase Pages by connecting with content on both a personal and professional level.
LinkedIn Looks at What’s Next in Marketing Content Together
“At LinkedIn, we’ve worked with the TopRank Marketing team for about two to three years now, and what I really like about working with TopRank is they really, truly come to the table as collaborative partners,” Judy Tian, marketing manager at LinkedIn observed. “I’ve worked with a number of agencies where in marketing, I’m asking for deliverable A and they just give me deliverable A. But what’s great about TopRank is they also think about B, C, and D and really try to push my thinking of what’s next,” Judy added. “I think in marketing you are only as good as the creativity of your team and your ideas. The more voices that we bring to the table and the more proactiveness and willingness of everyone contributing ideas, the better off your marketing campaigns will be, and for us at LinkedIn, TopRank has truly become an extension of our own marketing team,” Judy explained.

TopRank Marketing & Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise Not Afraid To Innovate: The IT Vanguards Awards Program
Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise (ALE), a 100-year-old business technology company, decided it was time to raise the stakes in sales funnel management. While ALE had hundreds of contacts, the company was not achieving the desired traction with their current methods. Their big idea was a recognition program for IT network and IT enterprise communications leaders. By celebrating industry leaders, ALE hoped to forge stronger relationships with clients and prospects — and build a more robust contact list. But how could ALE make sure that this seed of an idea produced the desired fruit — not only in its inaugural year but in years to come? The company looked to TopRank Marketing to help them create an innovative program, unlike anything that had been done before. TopRank Marketing provided end-to-end support for the initiative, collaborating with ALE on branding the IT Vanguards program, and then executing a strategic marketing plan which included influencer engagement, press releases, LinkedIn Pulse content, emails, and blogs. The IT Vanguards website doubled as a way to collect nominations and celebrate the winners. Once the winners were announced, the IT Vanguards website was populated with the honorees’ top leadership advice. These insights positioned both the winners and ALE as thought-leaders while also providing meaningful value long after the close of the program. All milestones — from announcing the program to celebrating the winners — were promoted using a strategic blend of content marketing, influencer marketing, and social media. The content was amplified on social channels through paid ads as well as posts by ALE employees, program judges, honorees of the IT Vanguards program, and relevant third-party organizations and industry associations.
Results of the IT Vanguards Program
By all definitions, the IT Vanguards program was a resounding success. With more than 50 quality, relevant nominations, the IT Vanguards program was an effective means to identify and celebrate the best IT network and IT enterprise communications leaders. The program also excelled as a way to generate brand awareness and engagement. There were nearly 14,000 combined landing page views during ten weeks of contest promotion. On social channels, the program boasted 100% engagement from program judges and honorees through activities such as direct conversations with the ALE and TopRank Marketing teams, social sharing, and internal sharing. The program also spurred third-party recognition of the honorees’ prestigious achievement, including press releases and special ceremonies held by the honorees’ local governments, school boards, and companies. These activities further heightened the credibility of the IT Vanguards program and the market leadership position of ALE. Lastly, the IT Vanguards program delivered in terms of business development. Using the IT Vanguards program to celebrate the IT network and IT enterprise communications leaders, ALE generated opportunities for meaningful conversations with prospects. The company attributes three million in the pipeline to the campaign.
We’re honored...
...to win the ANA B2 Awards silver award for our combined efforts with LinkedIn — an especially strong campaign as we outlined above, and to be named a finalist at the 2020 Content Marketing Awards in the best content marketing program in technology category for our joint efforts with ALE.

One Train May Hide Another: An Interview With Jim Jarmusch
Originally published as the cover story for the January 2014 issue of SLUG Magazine. Read it online or in print.
“I love getting lost in a place I don’t really know—it’s something very freeing. Instead of anxiety, like some people have, I feel so free to be lost,” says Jim Jarmusch. “I like to follow instincts, and oddly enough, it’s a kind of discipline. My little game of ‘get lost and don’t know where you are’ is a process for me that is very helpful for my imagination.”
Most know Jarmusch as an influential writer-director of American independent cinema, boasting an interlacing filmography of artistic, counter-culture films like Dead Man, Ghost Dog and The Limits of Control since the release of his debut full-length, Permanent Vacation, in 1980 as a 27-year-old grad student at NYU. The man is a sub-cultural icon, eschewing the mainstream to create rewarding works of art that long to be close read.
Raised on Jean-Luc Godard and New Wave cinema, nurtured through adolescence by Kenneth Koch and the New York School poets, and slow diving into the future with the support of ATP Recordings and a handful of relevant musicians, Jarmusch’s intellectual repertoire is expansive and continuing. Much like his films, the man has the ability to lose himself in the present details, while retaining an impressive understanding of the past. Perhaps it was subconscious self-reflection that materialized the filmmaker’s latest character creations: a couple of incisive, decades-old vampires in his upcoming release, Only Lovers Left Alive.
“My interest was, ‘Wow, if you could be alive that long, imagine what your perceptions would be like and all the experiences you’d have.’ Your knowledge of things would be incredible, if you could remember it all … Just having an overview of history that way was very attractive to me,” says Jarmusch.
Only Lovers Left Alive is the filmmaker’s addition to a long history of vampire mythology in both literature and film, and he’s versed on the great and obscure. Jarmusch links his characters’ British roots to “The Vampyre,” a poem written by Lord Byron’s physician, John Polidori, in 1819, the first time vampires appear in literature. Film-wise, he cites Carl Dreyer’s Vampyr, first and foremost, claiming it’s more of a poem than a monster movie. “I like the ones that walk outside the margins, that follow the genre in a way, but they’re not just following the Bram Stoker Dracula idea,” he says. “Of course, Nosferatu is an incredibly great film as is the universal Dracula with Bela Lugosi as well, but those are the ones that meet the expectation, and I like the ones that are traveling outside the mainstream.”
Only Lovers Left Alive, before anything else, is a love story between Adam (Tom Hiddleton) and Eve (Tilda Swinton). “Ours isn’t a horror movie … they just happen to be vampires. The thing I love about vampires, too, is that they’re not monsters, they’re humans that have been transformed,” says Jarmusch. “Even Nosferatu is not purely a monster—there’s a sophistication to him.” Adam and Eve are such altruistic vampires, in fact, that acquiring blood the more traditional and fatally seductive way is considered retro and obscene. He describes his characters eloquently, calling them both wild, but saying, “ … [Adam’s] the guiding sunlight of the film, [Eve] the golden light of reason and intelligence … She’s very happy to have the gift of her consciousness—it’s something very fragile and beautiful to her—and he is too, but he’s a little more romantic in a way, tortured a little, somehow.”

The filmmaker is known for being somewhat incestuous in his use of cast and crew members, and Swinton is quite obviously a favorite actor, and a good friend. According to Jarmusch, Only Lovers Left Alive might have remained in the shadows had she not kept the project going despite the film’s languid start and precarious financing. The part of Eve was written with her in mind from the beginning. “It’s good to work with people you know, but you’ve always gotta remember there’s people you don’t know who are amazing that you might get a chance to meet and work with, too,” says Jarmusch, who also gushed over French cinematographer Yorick Le Saux, production designer Marco Bittner Rosser and editor Affonso Gonçalves, all of whom he worked with for the first time on this film.
Other than using children’s digital cameras from Toys “R” Us for The Raconteurs’ “Steady, As She Goes” music video in 2006, Only Lovers Left Alive also marks Jarmusch’s introduction to shooting digitally. “I’m a film person. I love the magical thing of film, which is, first of all, light affecting chemistry on the surface of the film material, and then light passing through the print when you project it that creates this magical world of light and shadow,” says Jarmusch.
“Now, digital is a different kind of magic: It’s numbers being translated. So, my first thing is that I don’t like digital, and I don’t like MP3 sound, and I like analogue sound and vinyl and cassettes … but at the same time, I believe in these things as tools, and I love technology—I just love the old stuff, too.”
However, all of his qualms about digital, including the neverending depth of field and unnatural skin tones in daylight, didn’t end up applying when shooting Only Lovers because it was mostly shot at night. Shooting digital ended up being more efficient, as the desired effect in a scene could be achieved with very minimal lighting, among other benefits. “I found great strength in [digital] even against my own prejudice,” says Jarmusch. “So it turned out to be quite a magical tool for what we were doing and very helpful. It changed my preset dinosaur obsession with film, and now I’m more open.”
Jarmusch’s creative process is incredibly free-flowing, reflective of his self-proclaimed motto: “It’s hard to get lost if you don’t know where you’re going”—which is one of the many reasons why his films stand out. When beginning production for 2009’s The Limits of Control, for example, he didn’t even have a script—just a lot of ideas that were collected along the way. Only Lovers Left Alive started with a full script, but veered from it often. “I have this one chance in my life to be in this place, shooting this thing, with these people, so I’m going to shoot as much as I can think up,” says Jarmusch. “I have to do that because I don’t know what I’m doing—I know that I will figure it out in the editing room … You have to listen to the film, and that’s just my way to capture everything I can … ”
He describes a scene in the film where Adam and Eve have a sort of quarrel, saying that in preparation, he asked Hiddleston and Swinton to write out their own lengthy speeches, venting to the other character. Though Jarmusch cut out most of the dialogue, he was able to capture the feeling needed for the scene. “I’m always playing like that, trying to think of another angle for something. If we’re standing outside to do a shot and it starts to rain, most films will say, ‘OK, shut down, it’s raining, it’s not in the script,’” says Jarmusch. “Well, my first reaction is, ‘Mmm, what would this scene be like in the rain?’ …
“I don’t like to follow the map too closely, because in life, when you take the detour, that might be where you meet your lover! Or that might be the place you learned something you never expected.”
Of course, no Jarmusch film is complete without an exceptional, personally curated score and soundtrack. Only Lovers’ composer is Dutch lutist Jozef van Wissem, with whom Jarmusch released two albums in 2012, supplemented by Jarmusch’s latest musical project, SQÜRL, a trio including Carter Logan and Shane Stoneback. SQÜRL released two EPs in 2013, consequently with vampiric squirrel cover art and track names that undoubtedly relate to the new film. SLUG music writer Ryan Hall describes them as “no wave destruction paired with the lethargic and caustic wail of major-chord stoner riffs and a warped, warbled approximation of the music of the American West.” With a rich and varied musical background himself, Jarmusch’s track selections are always a special gift for music aficionados.
“There’s a kind of cowardly nature in the corporate film world where the suits want everyone to get what they expect, and what a drag. What kind of life is that where you just get what you expect? So I find it so disappointing when there are these incredible genres of music around the world, and then it always sounds like the same thing.”
Musical cameos in Only Lovers include Lebanese singer Yasmine Hamdan, who wrote the song she’s seen performing specifically for the film, New York psychedelic space rockers White Hills in a quick scene, and the soundtrack features Zola Jesus, ’60s soul singer Denise LaSalle and rockabilly musician Charlie Feathers. Like everything else, the music in the film is a carefully selected detail with a touch of meaning beyond its surface appeal—especially with one of the main characters (Adam) being a musician. “[Adam and Eve] have been alive a long time, so they appreciate things from all of human history, and they’re also not hierarchical about high culture/low culture—they appreciate it all,” says Jarmusch. “So having lute music, which is particularly associated with Baroque and Renaissance periods, mixed with sludgy, molten drone rock, is a kind of nice way to reflect that mixture of their interests as well … They like good stuff—they don’t care if it’s Franz Schubert or Charlie Feathers’ rockabilly—if it’s good, it’s good, and they don’t differentiate that way.”
It’s very Jarmuschian to write a love story about vampires free of the lustful violence usually associated with the genre. Jarmusch’s style has been criticized in the past as dull and contrived, but to appreciate his films, one must lose all expectations of Hollywood allure and watch them in the same way one would read a poem, or look at a painting: making connections, finding pleasure in the weighted details and minute brush strokes, and accepting the incomprehensible.
“These poetic structures are much more inspiring to me in the form of my films, in a way, than prosaic structure because poetry leaves spaces around things. Poetry doesn’t have to connect everything syntactically or even logically,” says Jarmusch. “Someone said—I think it was e e cummings—that you can understand a poem without knowing what it means—which I love so much … A lot of people don’t get it or they may not like it, but the hell with ‘em.”
It can be important to have waited at least a moment to see what was already there. Only Lovers Left Alive has been screening at film festivals around the world, including the New York Film Festival and Cannes, and will make an appearance at Sundance in the Spotlight category. If you don’t catch it there, it’s set for theatrical release in April of this year.

How to Improve Your Essay Writing Instantly
A Step-by-Step Guide
Whatever your new brilliance -- whether you are a mathematics genius, a sporting hero or (like me) a blinky, strangest kind -- there's a place in all students' educational livelihood when currently being great in life implies being proficient in experiments.
As the areas you study acquire more complicated and complicated, you are more questioned to assume, appraise, and have opinionswhere you once may have built calculations or even heard definitions. In general, the further you progress through your education, the more rote learning will be substituted with the type of analysis usually best exhibited through universities. Should by some astonishing accomplishment you manage to stop producing anything substantial at senior high school, it truly is something you'll almost surely need to confront college -- yes, even even if you're studying a science subject (although the essays wont ordinarily be rather so extended). One way or the other, essay producing comes to all.
In essays, such as conducting, practice makes perfect; but together with running the correlation is much significantly more obvious.
The odds is that in any time from the not-too-distant foreseeable future (if you don't are incredibly averse and indecent resourceful) you will have to write a composition, either in assessment terms or on your time, which will depend towards your last grade in some way. If that is a chilling potential for you personally, there is very good news and bad news. The bad thing about composition writing is it's maybe not a thing -- such as French verbs, or even the ability to conduct long distances -- that gets far better on its own if you merely continue having a go. To strengthen in essay creating, students usually desire a paradigm change: to determine exactly what isn't functioning, and why, and to learn and apply a new direction of accomplishing things.
The excellent news, on the other hand, is the fact that the individual skills necessary to compose a solid essay are things you are able to study, practise and boost inside. This guide is about pinpointingwhat these skills might function, and providing you with some hints as to how you may possibly develop them. Maybe not these suggestions will do the job for you all, but being good at composition writing, such as being proficient at some other school-related field, is exactly about trying various things, and also devising your method of doing matters. Finding organised
Libraries are purpose-designed for analyzing. Bedrooms aren't.
Before you start setting up an essay, I'd recommend you sit right down and also have a fast think about the method that you would like todo it. To begin with, what tools are you going to require? The internet, or catalogue books? This may possibly affect exactly where and the manner in which you opt to operate: I have lost a tremendous period of time seeking to come across models of posts about the web that I knewhave been in novels at the library, or simply mainly because I wished to just work at home rather than departing the house. I would advise taking yourself to some library ninety-nine days outside of a hundred.
Second, in the event that you should be running from downloadable or books articles, are you able to perform somewhere without the internet? The absence of Facebook and Insta-gram will promise your concentration will likely be around one hundred times greater, which may reveal within the quality of one's work out.
Next, produce a little timeline for your own essay. Get a summary of everything that you want to browse and try to contact all your material before starting. Take into consideration exactly how long you are likely to spend researching and reading, planning, and creating -- making a time or 2 prior to the deadline to generate some important adjustments, or only if things do not go to strategy. I'd urge devoting 3 hrs learn a 20-page article, and approximately each day to create 2000 words. This may sound like a silly amount of preparation, however the purpose of this is this: countless of allnighters have taught me essay-writing becomes exceptionally stressful and debilitating once you're up against the clock, along with a reader can tell immediately if something is hurried or hurried away in 2am on your afternoon of the deadline. What's more, you simply wont possess your best creative ideas under pressure.
If you have time, take a good look at this -- comically eighties and marginally cringey -- online video concerning creativity. A whole lot of that which the speaker says about thinking and playfulness isalso my own estimation, directly related to essay-writing. Collecting information
Looking at matters apart from the established reading list means you will not be reading all the same things as your own classmates, but leading to an even more original and intriguing essay.
Some educators place studying lists for essays, or create suggestions about where by students should start looking for advice; others request that you discover sources yourself. If a instructor does prescribe reading, it really is definitely worth visiting if you are able to find some thing extra that may add dimension, thickness or a fresh outlook to a own argument. But, it is crucial to consider very carefully about if it's the resource is reliable and valuable. What sort of resources should I use?
Even the most suitable resources will vary in the susceptible to issue. Here Are Some Usual kinds:
-- educational articles: These are essays by scholars in universities, and generally published in journals or as books. They are always useful, and certainly will be found by hunting within the library (ask your teacher for tips!) , having a poke around Google Scholar, or, even if your faculty has a subscription, on the website JSTOR.org. Search for key words and phrases and see what's up.
-- Newspaper posts: might be invaluable evidence for a composition in Background, but may possibly not be technical or detailed enough to get Biology. If you take advantage of a paper article or opinion piece, consider the facets that could prejudice it and include your thinking on your article!
-- Wikipedia: a very helpful starting point, and a progressively reliable source. Yet, stay clear of referencing it some teacher or examiner might maybe not like it and can withdraw against your own essay. Alternatively, look at the reference section in the bottom of the post and see where the author has accumulated their advice from.
-- Online websites: in general, avoid these, as that you don't know who's created them and just how valuable their own view is, or reliable their own truth. The exceptions are blogs by well-known pros. How should I take notes?
Make notes of things which seem fascinating as well as matters that are strictly appropriate. You want to be certain you answer fully the question but this interesting comment will frequently work its way in your essay and you also don't desire to squander ages hunting to this.
It might feel as the planet's biggest faff, however, taking good notes from your sources can save a Large Amount of time for those who return into program and write your composition:
-- Form notes out since you browse, rather than simply underlining or highlighting thus you'll have a summary of one of the absolute most important chunks of documents ready to use while you plan, rather than having to trawl through whole documents again searching for quotes.
-- because of this, if you believe you may want to quote something, then copy it out at the exact wording of the author.
-- kind notes at a different colour for every single fresh resource you browse. As a way to participate intelligently using that which you have read, then you've got to consider who said what, what they intended because of it, who they ended up fighting and if or not you agreed with them not. Colours really are a really useful visual assistance to do so.
-- In the end of each new informative article or article, publish a few lines summarising the author's major points, and whether you accept them.
N.B. Your significant engagement with all the scholars and writers whose work you have examine will depend to get a huge chunk of marks. This doesn't mean list a load of titles and rehearsing their disagreements; nor does it mean disagreeing with everyone else for your sake of it. As an alternative, think of whether or maybe everything they're arguing is valid on your experience -- or compare them to eachother. Planning
Adequate preparation at sea will help you avoid sea creatures. Decent planning in essays may help you avoid immaterial waffle.
Planning is the one most crucial action in writing a superb essay, and, frustratingly, also the measure which is most often rushed or ignored with college students. In case your documents often become criticised for obtaining inferior arrangement or uncertain traces of debate, chances are you want to practise your preparation. I utilize the subsequent step procedure to turn my notes to some superior strategy; you can take to it as well, and find out whether it will work for you.
Inch) re read your notes a number times, and then subtract what you think is particularly important, interesting, or highly relevant to this location of the topic you would like to talk about. So far as you can, attempt to rewire your thinking right into sections, and see whether you may link ideas with each other.
Suggestion: It might be that you have got three or two distinct ideas for an interest, and also you are unsure which to proceed along with: in this circumstance, you can work with a number distinct spider diagrams to find out which works best. Where would you the ideas connect together readily, or collapse right into neat segments? Which question will you be equipped to remedy most fully?
Two) Sit and then appear at your diagram(s), probably along with your notes, and work from exactly the primary 'position' or decision you would like to earn on your article. The best documents are evidenced with a clear field of argument throughout -- that I actually don't really get the thought that essays should present either side of a question. I regularly pick what I'm trying to state; the idea that I wish to complete with, until I commence. Now, the job you've got on paper the essay is really to set this decision up.
3) Work backward, using the inbound links you have made on your spider diagram: what do you need to assert or show to earn your point? Jot these 'points' down into a couple of words per day. This consists of the starts of the sword for the essay.
4) Start to complete your sword together with information from the notes, and some extra ideas you might have. If you are writing a literature informative article, it is vital that you involve a few close evaluation of passages to strengthen your argument. Jot down the paragraphs which link these in to the larger arrangement.
5) Fill your skeleton out increasingly more and more, until it's essentially a tough draft in bullet points. Every single twist or nuance of your debate should take there; each and every opening and concluding sentence for every paragraph, making it explicit how this paragraph answers your question.
Non-experts can be just as easy as authorities for appearing on work; if your composition is logical to somebody who does not know much in regards to the subject accessible, that's a great indicator.
6) At this point, it's very useful in the event that you can get some one (a friend or even a parent will probably perform) to read over your plan and find out if it is logical. Does all trace? Is it all relevant? Your approach should be so complete that the man or woman who reads it's going to immediately be able to spot any flaws. Move things around, add or delete to incorporate their criticism: it's easier to alter some thing in bullet-point arrangement than if it is all written out correctly.
Do not expect this technique to be quick or straightforward. For a 1500-word essay, I typically compose a plan of roughly three components, and then spend at least three hours making sure that before I set pen to paper, each kink in my debate will be ironed out. The pay off of doing it in this way is the fact that the producing procedure is short and easy -- even a case of joining up the dots, polishing bullet-points into sentences -- superior than picking out notions and also imitating thoughts in the same period as finding the words to state them.
Get better and better: Should you fight together with structure or clarity, practise your own planning! Give yourself a restricted quantity of time (state, two hours), decide on several previous essay questions in a review or coursework paper, and plan your answers as quickly as feasible. Get your instructor to check about your plans if you are completed. Writing
Even the 'actual producing'-bit may be absolutely the absolute most daunting and most stressful portion of the essay practice, and that's really where most students get stuck. Below Are Some tried-and-tested solutions to common writing problems: I can not begin
Blank webpages turned into not as frightening once they aren't blank any more. You can polish your style after; now could be the full time merely to find some thing published.
Extremely common to want your first sentence to be arresting, paradigm-shifting, to propel your audience headlong in your composition. But this urge might be paralysing: one of their most stressful feelings in the world is that of looking in a blank page, believing regarding the variety of phrases you'll need to fill up it. The real key to starting is always to just write some thing. Do not fret about how good it really can be -- put it down, and move on, and then return back and change it out when you're into your own flow. Writers' block
Return back for your program and make sure that you know what you're claiming. In the event that it is sti can not get out the words, decide to try and jot everything you want to say simply as you possibly can. Then move ahead into a simpler section of this article. Alternatively, you can try out opting for a wander, creating a cup of java or using a break up. All of it feels a bit incorrect...
Sometimes, at the process of writing, you will realise you disagree with all two-days-ago youpersonally, and you also don't really rely on the argument you're trying to create. When it is the case, return back to the drawing board. Do not squint on regardless -- a deficiency of conviction will reveal on your essay. Reunite to your strategy, and see whether it's possible to utilize similar stuff however change your accent, and perhaps the strange bit of signs, to create a separate argument. Style
Everyone has their own individual producing model: the may possibly be as flowery and purple, or even scientific as well as guide as you prefer (within reason). However you compose, to find top marks, it really is imperative that you learn how to be exact.
The proverb, "Eggs and oaths are damaged", is a good example of zeugma.
Style-wise there are two poles of wrongness: vagueness, and over-complication. Clearly, every single subject matter has its distinct language, and understanding this will likely soon be crucial, and also sharpen your analysis; nevertheless understand keywords are the pals also! Make sure that you understand the exact meaning of every word you use. But, be certain to know precisely what every single word you are using way, and also think carefully about whether you're employing this within the perfect context -- recall that those is reading your composition will probably understand better compared to meanings of zeugma, stagflation or symbiosis. Last, don't hide behind subject-specific vocabulary: Be sure you're using terms to donate to and build up your essay, and nothing of the leak is lost. The dull material
-- Get good at conventions like footnotingwriting and writing bibliographies. Examiners really do check these! -- Once you've finished, leave the essay for a single day or 2, then re read it. If you can, get someone to proof read for you personally. In this manner, you will stay away from making tons of silly mistakes which sabotage the strain and flow of one's article.

Citadel Research File - Ruin
Research Notes: AS-0847
Prepared by Dr. ██████ ███████, MD, PhD
Citadel █████
——————————————————————————————
Patient History:
Anomalous Subject 0847, preferred name ███████ ███████, was apprehended in a remote location by ███-████ and contained at Citadel █████. The subject appears to be a human male approximately 30 years of age, however, he claims to have first hand knowledge of events which predate that figure by several decades.
Observation, both in the field and under laboratory conditions, has shown AS-0847 to poses a number of anomalous abilities, the full extent and limitations of which are currently poorly understood. The subject maintains that he remains in confinement as a matter of personal choice, and not as a result of containment efforts by Citadel staff.
In-keeping with this delusion, AS-0847 has proven to be cooperative with both limited interrogation and low level testing of his anomalous abilities. The subject does however become highly intractable when questioned on certain highly specific topics, or when asked to perform certain demonstrations of his abilities. These include, but are not limited to, very minor abilities previously observed in other anomalous subjects.
Due to his relatively stable nature and proven track record of cooperation with Citadel Research Staff, as well as the difficulty of obtaining and maintaining live anomalous subjects, Citadel Command Staff has granted AS-0847 an indefinite stay of termination. Command staff has further mandated that all testing be conducted in as amenable a manner practicable in order to glean as much information as possible from the subject.
Extensive notes regarding each interrogation, as well as each test of the subject’s anomalous abilities, have been archived and are available upon request.
For notes regarding the current procedure in place in the event of the subject’s death due to natural or unnatural causes, or in the event of a revocation of the relevant stay of termination, see document AS-0847-███.

Interrogation Log:
Subject – AS-0847
Interrogator – Major ████████
Date - ██/██/████
AS-0847: Good morning Major, how can I be of service today?
Major ████████: Do you know the proper response to the following pass phrase, “Do you know the way to ███████?”
AS-0847: Oh dear. I’m afraid I can’t help you with that. Perhaps you would like to talk about something else?
Major ████████: So you do know something.
AS-0847: I know many things about many things Major ████████, but I’m afraid I won’t be of any help here.
Major ████████: Can’t, or won’t?
AS-0847: Neither, and both. You are simply not ready.
[Both Major ████████ and AS-0847 remain silent for several seconds while maintaining eye contact.]
Major ████████: Please, tell me everything you know about the location referred to as ███████.
[AS-0847 becomes somewhat agitated at this juncture.]
AS-0847: ███████, The city built over the sleeping corpse of an unborn god? ███████, which stands on top of a mountain that is not a mountain? ███████, which both exists in this world, and somewhere else entirely? That ███████?
Major ████████: … If that is the location referred to in the aforementioned pass phrase, then yes. Everything you know about that would be very helpful.
AS-0847: This, Major, is often the folly of the young; the desire for knowledge without first having the context to understand its significance… But I can tell that you won’t be satisfied with such an answer. If you wish, I will tell you something of use. Please, sit.
[AS-0847 indicates the empty chair on the opposite side of the table, the Major remains standing. Major ████████ has requested that it be noted in official records that, at 52 years old, he is one of the most senior members of command staff in terms of both rank and age.]
AS-0847: There is a place, north-east of here by your reckoning…
Major ████████: Would this place happen to be ███████?
AS-0847: Patience Major. Just listen for a while.
[Major ████████ sits begrudgingly.]
AS-0847: As I was saying, this place is hidden in the mountains, cut off from everything around by thick forests and rough terrain. It did not exist in this world before what you call the Breaking, but it now sits on a high plateau. A broken scar of gray overlooking an ocean of green. It is what you would call anomalous, what some others might call cursed.
Major ████████: How far away is this place you describe?
AS-0847: Many hundreds of miles, if you wish to deal in traditional distance. You needn’t worry about destroying or containing this place Major, it does both itself. Such is its nature.
Major ████████: Explain.
AS-0847: Gladly. The effects of this place are subtle at first. A man approaching the plateau would feel a mild sense of fatigue and lethargy, the sensation becoming stronger the closer he came to the plateau. Eventually, he would either lay down or collapse from exhaustion, and shortly thereafter, he would die. His body would then rapidly decay, and by sunrise the next day there would be nothing left of him.
Major ████████: That is hardly unheard of.
AS-0847: That is not the most anomalous part of this place, Major. If this theoretical corpse of ours were too get up and keep walking, the body would begin to rapidly decay even while alive. The skin, the flesh, and the bone. All together and all at once, though the bones would of course disappear last. Nothing but dust would remain long before he reached the top of the plateau. If however someone were to find themselves at the top all in an instant, they would be destroyed almost immediately. Anything would. Human, animal, plant, or stone. Nothing but dust would remain.
Major ████████: And what exactly on this plateau is so special?
AS-0847: Nothing. That’s the point Major. The only thing on this plateau are stones. Ruins. Nothing else remains of what might have been there in another place and time. No one knows if the stones are special in some way, or if they are just so large that they have lasted this long, and they too will decay away into nothingness. That is why the place is called Ruin. Not for the stones, but the fate of whatever else dares exist there.
Major ████████: So this place isn’t ███████?
AS-0847: No Major, it is not.
Major ████████: Then what exactly was the point of this whole story? Wasting my time?
AS-0847: Not at all. Think for a moment, Major. How could I know any of this? How could any man know of a place that kills anyone who sets foot in it? How could I, or anyone else, know what would happen to something in a place no one can ever reach.
Major ████████: Simple, you made it all up.
[AS-0847 begins to laugh harshly.]
AS-0847: No, I’m afraid I did not, and that is the power you must come to understand. In ███████ they know of this place. It is they who have discovered so much about a place no man can ever go. And this is not the only such place they have knowledge of. Consider that for a moment Major. What power must they wield, to come by such knowledge without risk to themselves? That is the power of ███████.
Major ████████: And you think this should scare me?
AS-0847: The knowledge and the power? No. What should scare you is that they are wielded by men. Men like you and I. Enlightened, yes, but human nonetheless. Pray you never find ███████ Major, it is not a fit place for sane men. Not ones that wish to live long lives with their sanity intact in any case.
[Major ████████ and AS-0847 both fall silent again. AS-0847 continues to concentrate on the Major. Major ████████ begins cleaning his fingernails.]
Major ████████: So in short, you have no intention of telling me where we can find ███████.
[AS-0847 makes a conciliatory gesture with his hands.]
AS-0847: I’m afraid not Major.
[Major ████████ rises from his seat and walks over to regard the wall behind AS-0847. After a few moments of silence, the Major grips the back of the subject’s head and attempts to slam it against the surface of the steel table. The subject’s head stops less than an inch from the surface of the table, entirely unharmed. Major ████████ proceeds to place his other hand on the back of the subject’s skull and leverage all of his weight against it, physically lifting himself off of the ground. Analysis of the footage shows that the subject’s head does not move any measurable amount.]
AS-0847: I think I would like to go back to my cell now.
[After several seconds, four armed personnel arrive to escort AS-0847 back to containment. Major ████████ releases the subject’s head and steps away as the escort enters the room.]
[Compiler’s Note: Shortly after the above transcribed encounter, Major ████████ submitted a request for the immediate revocation of the subject’s stay of termination to Citadel Command Staff. His request was unanimously rejected.]

Dear Mark: Safe Tick Repellent, Fish Intake on Mediterranean Diet, and Therapeutic Value of Wine
For today’s edition of Dear Mark, I’m answering a few questions from recent comment boards. First, with all the scary tick-related news coming out lately, are there any non-toxic tick repellents that actually work? Are there essential oils that repel and/or kill ticks? Is there a safer way to use insecticides? Next, were the people in the Mediterranean keto study actually eating a kilo of fish on their fish days? And is the wine an important part of the Mediterranean diet? Is the wine therapeutic or just for pleasure?
Let’s find out:
Non toxic effective tick repellents safe for children? Any suggestions? I live in NC so the tick thing scares the hell out of me. Found at parks in short grasses, like how am I supposed to avoid this???
If you want to avoid DEET and other pesticides, there are many essential oils that repel ticks. Let’s go through the various tick species.
The castor bean tick:
Repelled by miswak essential oil and killed by Libyan rosemary essential oil.
Repelled by rosemary and mint essential oils.
Repelled by Dorado azul, also known as pignut or bushmint and traditionally used as mosquito repellent. The terpene known as alpha-humulene was the most repellent terpene found in the oil; you can buy both the oil and the humelene.
Repelled by turmeric oil, even beating out DEET.
The cattle tick:
Repelled by French marigold essential oil.
Repelled by mastrante essential oil.
The deer tick:
Repelled by nootkatone (a grapefruit aromatic compound) and to a lesser degree ECOSMART organic insect repellent. Here’s a cool video showing ticks trying to climb a person’s finger that’s been dipped in nootkatone.
Nothing is 100% guaranteed to repel all ticks. In fact, many of these oils show 50-60% effectiveness in the field. But if you use a combination of relevant essential oils, frequent tick checking, smart clothing choices (long socks, shoes/boots, pants), and avoidance of tick-heavy landscapes (tall grass, oak leaves, etc, notwithstanding these new breeds that apparently love short grass), you’ll be in good hands—or at least better hands than the naked guy rolling around in piles of oak leaves.
And if you’re really worried, you could always tuck pants into your shoes, then spray the shoes and lower section of your pants with peremethrin, an insecticide that kills the ticks as they climb before they can reach your flesh. Use a dedicated pair of pants and shoes that you don’t use for anything else and reapply each time you go out. A light spray on the outside of reasonably-thick pants should provide tick protection without actually putting the pesticide into contact with your skin.
2.2 pounds of fish each day?!
I know, I was surprised to read that myself. But right there, according to the researchers:
We estimated during the first 4 weeks of this study that the average edible fish consumption per subject during the ‘‘fish block’’ day was approximately 1.12 0.41 kg=day.
So it wasn’t just an allowance of fish. They actually tracked their consumption and found they were eating over 2 pounds of fish on average on the days they ate fish.
The study said that they had “fish block” and “no fish block” days. With no mix of fish and other meats on the same day. What is the reason for this?
They offered no justification in the study write-up.
Maybe it was to increase variety.
Maybe it was to reduce their intake of omega-3s. I mean, a kilo of fish per day adds up to a lot of omega-3s, especially if you’re doing sardines and salmon. There is such a thing as too much a good thing, and excessive omega-3 can lead to blood thinning, excessive bleeding, and imbalanced omega-3:omega-6 ratios in the opposite direction.
Maybe it was to help people stick to the diet, to break up all that fish with some meat and chicken.
Great, but why the wine? Is it not a contradictory with ketosis? But is it for pleasure or is it for a therapeutic reason?
Wine is emphasized in Mediterranean diet studies (both keto and regular) because wine is considered an important part of the cuisines of most Mediterranean countries, at least on the European side. Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, and Greece all have an extensive history of wine production and consumption. Since researchers are casting a wide net to capture everything that might be contributing to the health effects, they’re including everything that appears in the “Mediterranean diet.”
It’s good to keep in mind that ketosis and alcohol detoxification do utilize some of the same physiological pathways. If you’re drinking an excessive amount, you’ll run the risk of inhibiting ketone production.
Still, wine does appear to have therapeutic effects, especially in people with metabolic syndrome—the subjects of this study.
Red wine is very high in polyphenols, due to both the polyphenols in grapes themselves and the unique polyphenols that form during fermentation. One study compared grape extract to red wine made with the same types of grapes, finding that red wine provided benefits the grape extract did not.
Drinking wine with a fast food meal can reduce postprandial oxidative stress and inflammatory gene expression; it can actually make an otherwise unhealthy meal full of refined, rancid fats less damaging (though still not advisable).
Blood pressure: In people with (but not without) a genetic propensity toward efficient or “fast” alcohol metabolism, drinking red wine at dinner seems to lower blood pressure.
Type 2 diabetics: Type 2 diabetics who initiate red wine drinking at dinner see reduced signs of metabolic syndrome, including moderately improved glycemic control and blood lipids.
Inflammation: A study found that non-drinkers who begin regularly drinking moderate amounts of Sicilian red wine enjoy reduced inflammatory markers and improved blood lipids.
I’d say the wine is a therapeutic addition to the Mediterranean keto diet. Don’t let that override your own experience, however. Wine might have therapeutic effects for many people, but not everyone feels better including it. It’s an option, but it’s hardly a necessary one for a healthy diet.
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask away down below. Thanks for reading, everyone.

Dear Mark: Safe Tick Repellant, Fish Intake on Mediterranean Diet, and Therapeutic Value of Wine
Repelled by Dorado azul, also known as pignut or bushmint and traditionally used as mosquito repellant. The terpene known as alpha-humulene was the most repellant terpene found in the oil; you can buy both the oil and the humelene.

Assassin’s Creed: Resurrection
Chapter 1 - Blue of Skies, Blue of Domes

...Why was it all blue?...
:::Accessing memories… Ashina Sungur. Memory date estimated: late 1st quarter of 11th century.:::
...BLUE..
“Y DNA Genetic trace suggests an individual of Central Asian origins…”
“Blue Sky** be with you, Sungur! May your path never end!” Sungur heard the voice, nodded and smiled to his older brother’s goodwish. He held onto his horse’s reins even stronger. He was leaving, finally seeking his own destiny but it meant leaving everything and almost everyone he held dear, everything he was born into and grew alongside.
Such was the way of nomads.

By his side, half of his father’s oba** that decided to come with Sungur, he was tasked with finding a new home for the Clan Ashina and its people. Staying was not an option, their law dictated both siblings, Sungur and Aksökö divide what land their father left them after his death. Aksökö, being the older one had a lot more popularity than Sungur and were to eventually claim all of the Ashina land for himself as soons as he gets an heir, so the two would eventually clash.
Sungur knew this because they were old royalty. It was the more powerful Ashina’s duty to prevent the chieftain line from branching. Their cousin clan, Ashida, made the mistake of tolerating root and branch clans, the resulting civil war almost erased their name from the face of the steppes.
“May your yurts ever multiply, Aksökö” said, Sungur. for the last time, then turned his horse’s face to west. His horse instinctively switched to travel speed as he held up the banner of his clan, carrying Ashina’s coat of arms or rather their symbolic “tamga** of the raven” as he rode to the leading front of the convoy of people that are ready to follow him.
And to the west they rode, first, through a small desert; then came the rocky fields. When they reached the Khazar land to the north, they were more or less close to the third anniversary of the start of their journey. Sungur led his people with greater wisdom than it was expected of his age. He was calm, calculated, thorough in his every decision. Sungur was keen on making new connections from the Oghuz and Kipchak Turkish Clans who just recently started to reign on these lands to find his clan a place to live. Ashina’s formal royal status did little to help him on his endeavour, as it was a reason enough to make any Khagan or bey** uneasy while allowing a clan this old and this large into their holds. Every bey Sungur made a connection advised him to travel further west or go south to join in with the young Seljuk Empire as soon as possible, as they had an already somewhat established control over the land and needed fresh cannon fodder clans to brace the might of Byzantines on the southeastern Anatolian Border. Persians’ distaste for Seljuk Turks’ control over their land was also well known and placing clans like Ashina would also prove them useful in terms of culturally dominating the area.

:::“We are getting close to the desired geography, doctor.::: :::”Hardly means anything. We’re still a few years off from Sabbah’s birth”.:::
Sungur aimed to reach to Nishapur. To walk the streets and talk with people. Learn who is who before making any awkward introductions with powerful people and getting pushed around. Ashina’s young chieftain took thirty of his men and traveled south to Seljuk capital. Approaching the city as a traveling caravan, he wandered the town’s dense streets to a point he can map them. Things he saw left him in awe. He was a steppe man, he grew up in a large oba but had never graced his sights with an architecture quite like Nishapur’s. Buildings, temples with domes and towers piercing the blue skies was displaying the perfect mixture of sharp edges and curvy outline of middle eastern architectural sense at the same time. “Persians sure does know how to build things.” he thought. Sungur later learned that these temples were of the religion of Islam which was dominant there. Blue turquoise was mined here and the gems were under open display as they were covering every possible facades of the mosques. It looked like the marbling and turquoise art of every kind was supplied to the world from this town, although Egypt’s Sinai was known to be a close competition. Even pavings of the streets had some form of pattern art made of marbles that embellishes the simplest of neighborhoods.

Nishapur was a diverse city. Traveling merchants from east to west, north to south all had their own districts and caravansarais to stay when they entered the city. Turks, if not royalty, were living outside the city because they preferred tents to solid walls. Persians, under the rule of Seljuks were still living in their ancestral homes, although their lands were confiscated for Seljuk’s own iqta.** Greeks, Armenians and Jews had a minor presence in the city too. Bustling bazaars of Nishapur had so many languages being yelled at to customers from many kingdoms. Sungur crossed paths with a group of Slavs buying turquoise sword sheaths, some Latins hauling silk and salt to their carts, dodgy looking hooded men carefully inspecting the streets from rooftops in a particular neighborhood and even witnessed a fat Egyptian buy opioids from an Indian with the longest grown beard he has seen in his life.

After four days of wandering around, Sungur caught the attention of the city’s security, or whoever it was to be tasked with figuring out what business this unknown warriors of thirty men that claims to be a trade caravan but neither selling nor buying anything in Nishapur. At night, fully armed gulams** with an old scribe came saying that he has to check the trade made by caravan for taxing purposes. Sungur, realizing that his cover as a merchant is blown up, introduced himself as the leader of clan Ashina. He said he wanted to buy supplies for the clan’s main convoy for the way west but found nothing to his interest in the city. Hearing of Ashina name, gulams told the Persian scribe that the man before him needs to be taken to Tugrul Khan.
“Why are you riding around in my city with a false identity, bey?” Said Emperor Tugrul Khan of Seljuks. “You packed up from the fatherland with quite a crowd. While we encourage strong beys like you to join our ranks; a formal hail before your arrival could’ve prevented my cavalry from encircling your main convoy encampment. Imagine my surprise when I found their lost bey within the walls of my city under the disguise of a merchant.”

“I meant no offence, noble Khan. We really did came here with the intention of supplying our convoy, then to be on our way to Byzantine border northwest to Baghdad. Ashina is crowded and we want to cause no problems to the establishment of the young empire you founded. We will carve our own territory to the west around Dogubeyazid and....” “A-a-a-a!” Interrupted, Khan. “What makes you think, that I’ll let you pass, bey? What makes you think that I don’t want Dogubeyazid and beyond, even Constantinople for myself, for my young empire?” “My Khan… I.. I assumed…” “You assumed too much, Sungur Bey. You will settle to wherever I see fit for your clan. But only, for a short time. I will give you a vast herding land and some autonomy near Caspian Sea. You, in turn will take your forces to my army when I demand.”
Sungur agreed, they talked terms. In several hours, they have found a special kind of sense of humor in eachother and Sungur realized, for all his dominance and agressiveness, Khan liked jesting around. Sungur realized this is a different breed of leader he’s talking with. Educated, literate, he was referencing of philosophers of ancient Greek when forming an argument, assuming Sungur already know them. Sungur wished he did. Khan gifted him a horse, couple dozen Seljuk banners that depicts an Öksökö the legendary two headed eagle, a guide tasked with showing them their new land, what rules to follow. He bowed as low as possible before exiting.
When Sungur reached south of Caspian Sea, Seljuk lords saw it reasonable to make Ashinas settle near Ak Yayla for couple of years, until Tugrul Khan of Seljuks, now a friend of Sungur decided their fate. Sungur made several raids to Byzantine borders with his alps**, atamans** and lesser beys. He eventually fell in love with a golden haired shield maiden from northern Tatars, Altun Khatun** whom he met during a raid. Despite her father’s objections, she loved Sungur too and the two eventually married. Altun’s younger brother, Jeng, also joined up with Ashinas and quickly became Sungur’s right hand man. Sungur trained, met people, learned Arabic, some Farsi, even some Greek. At the fourth summer there, Altun gave the family a daughter, they named her Alchin. And at the fifth... :::Warning: Birth trauma imminent. Flow of genetic data suggests a change in memory subject.:::

Database/Codex Entries Below:
Blue Sky: The Deity most Turks and Mongolians worshipped before majority of Turks switched to Islam. It was also known as Gok Tengri, and was the Zeus-like head of the steppe pantheon of gods.
Oba: A tent town made of “yurts”. Often different places for winter and summer settling.
Tamga: A mixture of coat of arms and a letter-like symbol of a deity, a society or a noble house. Clan Ashina’s tamga was raven, but as you might notice, it didn’t resemble one at all and tamgas had no place in Turkic alphabet to begin with.

Figure: Tamga of Blue Sky Tengri with inscription: “Öd Tengri yaşar kişioğlu kop ölgeli törümiş.” “Only gods really live; mankind has bred to die.”
Bey: Oghuz Turkish word for “lord” or “sir”.
Iqta: The Middle Eastern feudalic system when an individual or a family is awarded with personel land in exchange of covering the expenses of some particular soldiers of high class. The system survived under the name of timar and gave rise to the infamous timariot class of soldiers in Ottoman times until around 16 to 17th centuries.
Gulam: Elite soldiers of Seljuk Khan. Consisting of Turkmen clans like Ashina who recently migrated to west. Tasked with protecting the Khan himself in the capital. The just like the word “Mamluk” in Arabic, the word “Gulam” originates from “Slave” in Persian which Turks basically was when they arrived to Middle East as paganist refugees from Chinese war. Turks’ beliefs meant they could not be equal citizens like Christians or Jews. Muslims gave control of the cavalry of their army to the Turks and allowed them to live outside of the walls of their cities. In time, more and more Turks arrived and they used the military control they were given to usurp the old regime, both in Egypt(which led to the birth of Mamluk Sultanate) and in Persia. Although Seljuk’s case were more of a brute force case rather than a political scheme.
Alp: Means “brave”, alp-hood was somewhat equivalent of knighthood of Europe; although anyone could become an alp and it was not an inherited title for nobles.
Ataman: A warlord title of Cossacks and Tatars. Ashina Tugrul is half Tatar from his mother’s side, so I figured he can use the title. He will be called Ataman by his uncle Jeng, who is also an Ataman, somewhere in his lifetime.
Khatun: Old Turkish word for “lady” and the root of current Turkish word for “woman” which originates from the word that is more or less similar to “shield maiden” or “female warlord” in ancient Turkic.
