The Central Europe Loop

When I recently traveled to Central Europe, I met many other travelers who were going to the same cities I was. The most popular cities in this part of Europe are all situated in a loop, which makes it pretty easy to go from one to another and still land back in the city you flew into. You can really start anywhere with this loop and go clockwise or counterclockwise, but for the sake of organization, I will be following the route that I took.
Destination #1 - Krakow
My journey started and ended in the south of Poland, in the history rich city of Krakow. This city can be pretty well explored in only a couple days. Its small, but full of culture, good food, and lovely little markets. When in Krakow, I suggest taking a day trip to Auschwitz Concentration Camp. It's such an important part of history, and while it's a somber experience, it really helps put everything into perspective, and helps us to not forget the atrocities that were committed in the past. For a full list of things to do in Krakow, check out Kraków, Poland -Things to do on a Weekend Trip

Destination #2 - Prague
Next is the gorgeous city of Prague, Czech Republic. The transition between Krakow and Prague is the longest, sitting at about 6 hours by train. There are other options like flying, but that doesn't always fit a tight travel budget. I chose to take an overnight train, and my one regret with this was booking a normal seat and not a sleeper car. I honestly didn't even see an option for sleeper car tickets, so when the train came in and I saw car after car with sleeping compartments, I was bummed. Moral of the story, if you go by night train, be more diligent than I was and find tickets to the sleepers if you plan on actually getting good rest. Prague has a lot to offer; beautiful architecture, history, a castle, a booming nightlife (if you look in the right places), and great parks to relax in. I would suggest staying about 3 days in Prague, as it isn't that big of a city (most in this region aren't). This is truly one of the most beautiful cities I've ever seen. Make sure to add the Prague Castle complex to your itinerary, especially Golden Lane. This row of little buildings inside the castle walls used to be homes and shops during the medieval era, and every one of them tells a story about what used to go on there.

Destination #3 - Munich & Salzburg
From Prague, you take either a 6 hour bus or train to Munich, Germany. The train or bus will drop off at the same station, Munchen HBF, which is west of city center. I'm not going to lie, this station confused me at first, especially the bus station. I couldn't figure out how to get to the underground from the bus station, but I think I just didn't walk far enough. Getting from the train station to the underground, or vise versa, is pretty simple. Although I took the bus, I would recommend taking the train because the Munich bus station is not the greatest, not during the early hours of the morning anyway. There was trash and broken glass on the floor, and nowhere to sit because all of the food stops were closed at that hour. The train station is pretty nice though. I would say it's a pretty standard European train station with coffee counters and mini food markets that give you the opportunity to grab last minute refreshments before hopping on your train. Germany as a whole was one of my favorite stops on this trip because German culture is so fun! Expect to have a good time and to eat lots of heavy, tasty food, and wash it all down with a beer. Munich is amazing, but if you'd like to get out and see something different on one of the days you're there, a great day trip from Munich is Salzburg, Austria. Salzburg is right over the border of Austria, and is only a couple hour train ride from Munich. Almost everyone I've talked to who has been to Salzburg has fallen in love with it, me included. The whole city is surrounded by beautiful snow capped mountains, while the city itself has large mountain type hills, some with trails so you can climb up and get breathtaking views. Salzburg is most known for being the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and the backdrop for the Sound of Music. You can tour the former home of the Mozart family or walk around and see sites where the Sound of Music movie was filmed. Salzburg castle is also an excellent addition to your itinerary. This castle will allow you to step back into medieval Austria and will also teach you about battles fought by the Austrian military. Whether you're a Sound of Music fan or a classical music enthusiast, there's so much to experience in Salzburg!

Destination #4 - Vienna
From Munich, the next natural stop is Vienna, Austria. Vienna has a long history of being Austria's center of music, which started when Mozart moved from Salzburg and made a home in this city. By boarding a train at Munchen HBF, you can expect to arrive in Vienna in about 4 hours. Two of the biggest highlights of Vienna for me were the market and the Austrian National Library. If you choose to go to the market, be aware that the vendors are extremely pushy and don't like to take no for an answer. Make sure you hold your ground and only accept samples if you are truly interested in buying something. Things at the market can also be quite expensive if you don't pay close attention. I had stopped at a stand to buy dried fruit and tea, and ended up spending more than I had hoped because the vendor filled the bags instead of letting me do so. Just pay attention and be firm if you tell someone no. The National Library is a must when in Vienna because its so breathtakingly beautiful! It's lavishly decorated in deep wood, stone, gold, and gorgeous frescoes on the ceiling. I felt a little like I had stepped into the library from Disney's version of Beauty and the Beast, which for any Disney kid turned bookworm is a dream come true. Vienna feels lavish as a whole, so you can definitely tell its the capital of Austria. Again, this is a small city, so you only need a few days here.

Destination #5 - Budapest
The last city on the list - and my personal favorite - is Budapest, Hungary. Budapest is really quite close to Vienna. You could board an early morning train in Vienna and be in Budapest by mid morning. This city has so much life! I would call it the European city that never sleeps because in Budapest, parties go all night long! Budapest's big draws are the thermal baths, which are thought to be healing, the giant indoor market (pictured below), the unique architecture, and the bar/ nightclub culture. When you get there you'll hear everyone talking about ruin bars, which are these huge buildings with multiple bars and countless dance floors. If night life is your jam, I can guarantee you'll end up at a ruin bar at some point. I would suggest keeping your daytime plans light in Budapest because there's a good chance you'll be out until the wee hours of the night, and waking up late. Because of this, I would recommend staying in Budapest for 4 to 5 days, so you can see everything you want to. I only had a few days in Budapest and wish I could have stayed for much longer. But I guess that just means that I have to go back!

After a thrilling stay in Budapest, I made my way back to Krakow on an overnight bus. While this city jumping form of travel may seem like a lot, its so great, especially because like I said, these cities are all fairly small and can be seen in a few days. I had two weeks to make this loop, but I would have loved to extend that. If you don't have that much time, you can always do just a part of the loop instead of the whole thing. Central Europe is definitely a unique experience, and I'm so glad I was able to take this trip! For more information about a specific city, I will be posting about each of them very soon. Take a chance, be a little crazy, and hop around Central Europe!
Happy Travels!
