The elder woman who was speaking & telling her as a survivor, afterward, I& told her my& situation that as a two spirit mixed native of many different nations & that it's an honor to meet her & thanked her for sharing her story & I& was literally this close to crying & she gave me& a hug & told me& that it was okay to let it out and cry & she gave me& advice on how to learn the languages, & she told everyone present who was native to learn the language in any way you could, that the prime minister didn't like what she had to say but she didn't care, she'd do it anyway and she'd keep fighting for everyone's rights. She's really iconic. Also, I& recognized some of the words in Mikmawi'simk in the honor song so that was really cool. There was a time in the song where members of the nation were allowed to stand by the elders but considering I& didn't know if it was for status natives only or not I& didn't wanna step on any toes so I& didn't end up going with them bc. even today if you don't have status and/or aren't enrolled for a lot of people you're not really seen as "native enough" & it's discouraging & upsetting but at least I& got to speak to the elders & hug a grannie 🥺💕✨

President Biden also proclaimed this day Columbus Day, continuing a tradition begun in 1934. In this proclamation, President Biden urged Americans to reflect on "America's spirit of exploration" and "on the courage and contributions of Italian Americans throughout the generations," while acknowledging "the painful history of wrongs and atrocities that many European explorers inflicted on Tribal Nations and Indigenous communities."

Someday, the American president will go back to issuing only one proclamation for the second Monday of October – only this time it will be for Indigenous Peoples Day, not Columbus Day – hopefully sooner, not later. This is a good start, though. ☮️ Peace… Jamiese of Pixoplanet
