Today, National Day of Remembrance, is a day where we remember that children and Indigenous relatives were taken from their homes and forced into residential schools. “Kill the Indian-save the man” the idea was to indoctrinate the Native Americans. Forcing the language and culture to die, this was the intent. There was insurmountable damage the residential schools did to children and families by these forced “educations”.. Bodies of children are being recovered. Today marks a healing journey.. a day to remember these families and children. A Remembrance for these souls, and so no atrocity like this can be forced upon anyone. This is day to honor indigenous wisdom, the lands we are on. It is a day to remember the survivors who made it home from these schools, and the ones who did not. This is history, real history, not just a one sided version. I am grateful for this day to honor these souls. And I found this image from @youngmer to be a beautiful and haunting representation of the children that we all should remember today and everyday. #thisis40ish While doing my courses for my degree I am required to read some pretty heavy subjects from colonialism, genocide to civil unrest. One subject hits me hard. The continued actions to destroy the matrilineal foundation of indigenous peoples. Women, indigenous women in particular have been taught to become subservient by a patriarchal culture and religious belief system (this may push some of you off) Indigenous families were never meant to be insolated from one another's influences. Aunties taught and mentored her sister's children and her husbands sisters children, uncles were not lacking on their responsibilities to their mothers clan and sisters offspring. We all took responsibility for the foundation of our childrens lives. In today's vision of urbanization and capitalism those connections seem unnatural and frowned upon. Another uncommon and unneccessary belief of a women is her place in the household. An example: moms must be with their children at all times, teaching, feeding, disciplining etc. I have seem many a movie that depicts women as this octopus woman.. managing all aspects of her life .. of course with a smile on her face and silently crying in the secret place. Society tends to vilify women that speak out.. our history is marked with tags of malicious, manipulative, emotional and confrontational. These women; Rosa Parks, Lorelei Williams, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Michelle Obama, Maya Angelou, Susan La Fleschewas a 19th-century American reformer and a physician and widely recognized as the first Native American holding a medical degree, Winona LaDuke, Eliza Burton “Lyda” Conleyone of the first female Native attorneys, and many others, have shown women around the world what leadership looks like in a male dominated society. We love this country. We even have a song named after this very particular day. But this year, it’s a day of mourning. A day of reflecting. A day of honouring, remembering, and respecting the Indigenous Peoples who have been horrifyingly mistreated throughout our country’s history. The discoveries of these children’s bodies has our country in a crossroads where we must address this situation fully, aggressively, and with the utmost care and respect. FIND. EVERY. SINGLE. CHILD. Go to every single residential school, find them all, and respect and honour their completely unnecessary deaths. One of the ways we’ve also been feeing these days is really missing the late Gord Downie. The way he used his last days to tell Chanie Wenjack’s story. His spirit and his hope for our country to address these issues. To not be a country just known for “hockey pucks and coffee cups.” He said the next 150 years for this country will be its toughest, and we must use it to come together and address the wrongs of our past. Let’s continue to educate ourselves, our children growing up here, and all show the support and do what we can to try and fully address and honour these horrible tragedies. Our hearts today are with all the poor children who died at these disgusting institutions. All the survivors who had to endure such disgusting treatment and conditions. All the family members who had their daughters, sons, sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandmothers, grandfathers, and friends taken from them. The entire Indigenous community who has had to deal with the infinite mental and inter-generational trauma these institutions created.
