Hello everyone and welcome to the start of a new week! Here’s a book haul (part one 😂) of books I bought the last time I met up with bestie @keeperofpages Haunted Houses had me at the cover. This tells the story of three different girls’ transition to womanhood. “Tillman presents three very contemporary lives in uncanny, disturbing and sometimes shocking terms.” A Helping Hand also had a must-read synopsis. It follows a couple who look on themselves as Good Samaritans and enjoy helping lonely elderly ladies. “Beneath the suburban net-curtained world of genteel respectability however lurks the much darker and chilling terror of greed and exploitation - deadly currents that are masked by polite conversation and cups of tea.” Pleasantview looks to be a powerful read! Told in a mixture of English and Trinidad Creole, it reveals the dark side of the Caribbean dream. It’s a novel-in-stories about a society where “poverty and patriarchy savagely rule, and where love and revenge often go hand in hand.” Then there’s Waiting For Ted. By the time I got round to this haul, I’ve already read it! 😂 This book is really fantastic and one of my favourites of last year. Check out my review on the grid. Finally, The Bleeding which has the most gorgeous sprayed edges. I’m already a fan of the author so can’t wait to try “the first in a startling new series - a dark, horrifying, powerful historical thriller with an extraordinary mystery at its heart and three women pushed so far beyond breaking point, they face only one way out…” I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Have I tempted you? 😏 Have a great week everyone! 🤗😘 #bookstagramuk #scottishbookstagrammer #bookhauling #hauntedhouses #lynnetillman #ahelpinghand #celiadale #pleasantview #celestemohammed #waitingforted #mariekebigg #thebleeding #johanagustawsson #morebooksplease📚 #ineededthesebooks #neverstopbuyingbooks #insatiablebookworm https://www.instagram.com/p/CpLTSzHLc1q/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hello everyone! I’m so glad it’s Friday and I’ve only done two days this week! 😅 I’m back with another book haul. These three beauties are paperbacks I bought when Mr B and I were in Scotland in November. Scottish Folk And Fairy Tales from Burns to Buchan is pretty self-explanatory I think? This book celebrates “Scotland’s enormously rich oral tradition and offers a carefully chosen combination of old favourites such as Tam Lin, Thomas Rymer and Adam Bell, as well as more modern stories by master storytellers like Andrew Lang, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and John Buchan.” I picked up Big Sky in the wonderful Leakey’s secondhand bookshop in Inverness in perfect condition, purely because it was a Kate Atkinson. Then I realised it was the fifth in the Jackson Brodie series 🙈 so I won’t be reading this one for a little while! I won’t tell you what it’s about in case I spoil myself for the previous four books 😂 Finally, we have Damn’ Rebel Bitches, The Woman Of The ‘45 which I bought from the Culloden battlefield visitor centre. I love the look of this! It focuses on the women around the time of the infamous Culloden conflict who are often forgotten in history from 1745-46 and is based on original documents and letters. I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments! #bookstagramuk #scottishbookstagrammer #anotherbookhaul #ohlookmorebooks #scottishfolkandfairytales #gordonjarvie #bigsky #kateatkinsonauthor #jacksonbrodieseries #damnrebelbitcheswomenofthe45 #maggiecraig #tbrkeepsongrowing #ineededthesebooks https://www.instagram.com/p/CpDkDPULyub/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hello everyone and welcome to another Friday book haul! You’d think that I’d be fresh out of haul posts to share but somehow these books keep jumping onto my shelves! 🤷🏼‍♀️😂🙊 Akwaeke Emezi is probably one of the authors that I have the most books by on my shelves without having read a single one of them! 🙈 Dear Senthuran is a memoir in letters addressed to their friends, to members of their family - both biological and chosen and to fellow storytellers, Emezi charts their life through chronic pain, heartbreak, intimacy with death and is a powerful, raw unfolding of identity. I can’t remember where I heard about this fantastic series of books - British Library Women Writers but I’m so grateful to whomever put them on my radar. War Among Ladies is described as a quietly devastating novel about the realities of life for single working women in the 1920’s and the systems that failed them. Finally, I picked The Sisterhood up on a whim whilst browsing for other books. It’s described as an honest and hilarious book which celebrates the way in which women connect with each other. Imagine living between the pages of Pride and Prejudice in the Bennet household. Now imagine the Bennet girls in the 21st century - looking like the Kardashian sisters but behaving like The Simpsons. This is the house Daisy Buchanan grew up in. I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Hey everyone! Hope your week has got off to a good start. I’m back at work finally, half days for the moment while I continue to recover. Just before I went off, I got my hands on three beautiful books, two #penguinclothboundclassics for my collection and Akwaeke Emezi’s new novel. I bought The Women In White after hearing people rave about it during #thegreatthomashardyreadalong2022 Is it wrong that I’ve never read any Wilkie Collins before? 🙈 It’s described as the first and most influential of the Victorian genre that combined Gothic horror with psychological realism. Yes please. I’m also ashamed to say that despite having two other books on my shelf by Akwaeke Emezi (Freshwater and The Death Of Vivek Oji), I haven’t read anything by them. Yet! The synopsis seems like it’s quite a romantic novel so I am a little bit wary but excited to give You Made A Fool Of Death With Your Beauty (EXCELLENT title) a chance. Finally, also inspired by my Thomas Hardy readalong, I picked up Far From The Madding Crowd. I’ve heard people describe this as one of their favourite Hardy novels so I’m keen to see what I think. It follows independent and spirited Bathsheba Everdene who comes to Weatherbury to take up her position as a farmer on the largest estate in the area and attracts three very different suitors. Each, in contrasting ways, unsettles her decisions and complicates her life and tragedy ensues, threatening the stability of the whole community. Okay, sold! 😁 I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Are you a Wilkie Collins or Thomas Hardy fan? Have you read any Emezi and what did you think? Let me know anything and everything in the comments. Have a lovely week everyone! 🤗😘 #bookstagram #scottishbookstagrammer #bookhaul #prettybookslovers #clothboundclassicscollector #thewomaninwhite #wilkiecollins #youmadeafoolofdeathwithyourbeauty #akwaekeemezi #farfromthemaddingcrowd #thomashardy #ineededthesebooks #insatiablebookworm #yespleasemorebooks #bookobsessed #booksarethebestmedicine https://www.instagram.com/p/ChSukrarkfS/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hello everyone! I’m away in a gorgeous village in the Cotswolds on a reading retreat with @chrissireads but I thought I’d share another paperback haul with you all. I was intrigued by Rose Nicolson as it’s a Scottish historical fiction novel set in the 16th century where Queen Mary has fled Scotland to raise an army from the French. Described as a vivid, passionate and unforgettable novel about this dramatic period of Scottish history featuring a conspiracy over who will take Scotland’s crown. Sahota’s new novel China Room follows characters across generations and continents (from Punjab to rural England. It’s a transfixing novel about two characters desperate to free themselves - one from the expectations of women in early 20th century Punjab and the other from the weight of life in the contemporary Indian diaspora. Lear Wife is inspired by Shakespeare’s King Lear and tells the story of the most famous woman ever written out of literary history. Lear’s wife was exiled to a nunnery years ago written out of history, her name forgotten. Now she has a chance to tell her story. Though her grief and rage may threaten to crack the earth open, she knows she must seek answers. I’d love to know if you’ve read any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments and have a great week everyone! 🤗😘 #bookstagram #bookrecommendations #scottishbookstagrammer #bookhaul #perfectpaperbacks #ineededthesebooks #rosenicolson #andrewgreig #chinaroom #sunjeevsahota #learwife #jrthorp #booksimexcitedabout #booksonthetbr #booksineedmorebooks https://www.instagram.com/p/ChAqf0FLGvA/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

It’s Monday, it’s a new week and (you know the drill 😂) it’s time for another book haul! These three paperbacks obviously HAD to be bought. Razorblade Tears follows a Black father and a white father who join forces in their crusade for revenge against the people who murdered their gay sons. In their quest to do better for their sons in death than they did in life, alpha males Ike and Buddy-Lee will confront their own prejudices, about each other and their sons, as they reign down vengeance upon those who hurt their boys. I’ve gone down a bit of a Hardy rabbit hole since I started the #greatthomashardyreadalong2022 Under The Greenwood Tree is described as one of the most popular of Hardy’s novels and is a delightful and humorous depiction of life in an early Victorian rural community. Finally, Diamond Hill which is set in the last shanty town of Hong Kong before the fraught 1997 handover from Britain to China. It follows the return of a recovering heroin addict, Buddha, as he tries to salvage what’s left from a place he hoped to forget. I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments! Have a great week everyone 🤗😘 #bookstagram #bookstagramuk #scottishbookstagrammer #bookhaul #bookoholic #bookobsessed #prettypaperbacks #razorbladetears #sacosby #underthegreenwoodtree #thomashardy #diamondhill #kitfan #ineededthesebooks #cantstopwontstopbuyingbooks https://www.instagram.com/p/CfCVcfwrSgx/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hello everyone and welcome to the end of the week, thank goodness 😅 it’s been one of “those” weeks and I’m so glad to get some breathing space and chill out time. This book haul features three hardback books that are all very different to each other, but hey, that’s how I roll! 😉 Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before was recommended by bestie @emmasbookishcorner I think?? 😅 It teaches you how to fortify and maintain your mental health, even in the most trying of times. Dr Julie Smith’s expert advice will help you stay resilient whether you want to manage anxiety, deal with criticism, cope with depression, build self-confidence, find motivation or learn to forgive yourself. I am so here for this book especially after the week I’ve had! I’m joining in a buddy read for Persuasion by Jane Austen at the end of the month so of course I had to get the Penguin clothbound classic to join my others! This is about Anne Elliot who at 27 is “no longer young and has few romantic prospects.” 😱 She was persuaded to break off an engagement 8 years previously to a handsome naval captain, Frederick Wentworth with neither fortune or rank. This is the story of what happens when they encounter each other again. Finally, I have the finished copy of Elektra. The lovely @caitlinraynor was kind enough to send me a proof copy which I buddy read with bestie @keeperofpages Review coming soon but just like Jennifer Saint’s last novel, Ariadne, this is a re-telling of a Greek myth putting women at the helm of the story. I loved it! I’d love to hear your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Two posts in a day!! I go on a mini Insta break and then you get two posts?? 😂 Here’s another book haul and I’d love to hear your thoughts. Islands of Abandonment came to my attention via the gorgeous @sandladysbooks who is becoming quite a dear friend here on IG. It’s a nonfiction book about abandoned places when nature is allowed to reclaim its place. From Tanzanian mountains to the volcanic Caribbean, the forbidden areas of France to the mining regions of Scotland, Flyn brings together some of the most desolate, eerie, ravaged and polluted areas in the world and shows how against all odds, they offer our best opportunities for environmental recovery. The Divines is a book I’ve had my eye on since it was in hardback. It’s set in a girls boarding school (which might be a bit triggering for me but we’ll go with it! 😂) and explores the intoxicating and destructive relationships between teenage girls. Finally, Tomorrow Sex Will Be Good Again: Women and Desire In The Age Of Consent. Looks feminist, educational, important and I’m excited to read it! Let me know all your thoughts down below and have a lovely weekend everyone! 🤗😘 #bookstagram #bookstagramuk #bookhoarder #bookhaul #ineededthesebooks #islandsofabandonmentlifeintheposthumanlandscape #calflyn #thedivines #ellieeaton #tomorrowsexwillbegoodagain #katherineangel #nonfictionbooks #booksihadtohave #booksimexcitedabout #bookwormheaven https://www.instagram.com/p/Cb0fih4LVQu/?utm_medium=tumblr

Hello everyone and welcome to… the start of the weekend!! I feel especially cheeky today saying that as I’ve only worked one day this week but I’m really grateful to have another two days reading and relaxing. You might have seen on my stories yesterday that I did quite a bit of damage in @waterstones Brighton but I had vouchers burning a hole in my pocket and it just needed to be done! 😂 I’ll just mention them briefly as there just aren’t enough characters to deal with a haul of this size! 🤣 From the bottom 😏 I’m doing a buddy read of The Love Songs of W.E.B. du Bois in April. I have this on Kindle but oddly enough, when it’s a chunkster like this, I prefer having a physical book, even if it’s harder to read. The next lot of books are all on the @womensprize longlist - Flamingo, The Sentence, Creatures Of Passage, Remote Sympathy, Careless, Salt Lick and The Bread The Devil Knead. The Exhibitionist hasn’t been released yet but I had that on preorder anyway, I’m currently reading The Paper Palace, I already own Sorrow and Bliss, Great Circle, Build Your House Around My Body, The Book Of Form and Emptiness and This One Sky Day. The final two books on the longlist - The Final Revival Of Opal and Nev and The Island Of Missing Trees I’ve already read (and rated five stars). Yes, you’ve guessed it, I’m planning to read the entire longlist!! 😍 The last six books were all impulse buys, most of them coming from a very excellent looking indie table in Waterstones. They are: The Life Of The Mind, Tell Me I’m Worthless, Somebody Loves You, Weird Fucks, Cold Enough For Snow and Happy Stories, Mostly. I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments! Oh hello Friday, it’s SO good to see you! Let’s celebrate with a book haul 😜 These three paperbacks are a mixed bag but as always, I’m excited to get to two of them and to re-read another. I’ll start with The House Of The Spirits. I read this back in 2012 and loved it and have recently been meaning to pick it up again. Then I saw a used copy being given away at work so I took advantage and grabbed it!! It’s a family saga of triumphs and tragedies and I’m really looking forward to re-reading it again. Next up - Waiting For The Night Song. It’s been described as a love song to the natural beauty around us (okay, SOLD!) a call to fight for what we believe in and a reminder that the truth will always rise. This moving novel about friendships formed in childhood magic and ruptured by the high price of secrets looks so intriguing! Finally, Dog Rose Dirt which I’ve had my eye on since it was released. Serial killer Michael Reave, known as the Red Wolf, has been locked in Belmarsh prison for over 20 years for the brutal and ritualistic murders of countless women. Ex-journalist Heather Evans returns to her childhood home after her mother’s inexplicable suicide to find hundreds of letters between her mother and Reave. If she wants to uncover the truth and stop further bloodshed, she must confront a monster. I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments! Hello everyone and hope you’re all okay. I’ve returned back to work today after three weeks off (half holiday, half injury 😅) and it’s not been easy but lucky I’ve got a book haul to share and cheer myself up! Any excuse eh? 😉 The Dust Never Settles was brought to my attention by the gorgeous @keeperofpages and I’m so glad I preordered it. It follows a woman called Anais who is attempting to sell her ancestral home but there are spectres within the building who are refusing to let her making her aware of the injustices on which both the country and the house were built. Pregnant, nervous and alone, what begins as an uneasy homecoming to Lima becomes a reckoning with secrets that refuse to stay buried. This is described as a debut to seduce, entice and mesmerise for fans of Isabel Allende and Kazuo Ishiguro. Yes please and YES PLEASE! 😍 Blue Skinned Gods looked far too wonderful to ignore - it follows a young boy called Kalki in India who is born with blue skin and thought to be the tenth human incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu. His family start to make a living from pilgrims who seek him out for blessings and miracles. This novel follows the themes of identity, faith, family and sexuality. Finally, the beautiful hardback for We Are Not Like Them which has already been getting some great reviews. Riley and Jen have been best friends since they were children, they thought their bond was unbreakable and it never seemed to matter that one of them was black and the other was white. Then Jen’s husband, a Philadelphia police officer, is involved in the shooting of an unarmed black teenager and everything changes in an instant. I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors, especially if you’ve already read them. Let’s have a chat in the comments! Hello everyone, hope you’re all well and your week has got off to a good start. Today it’s book haul time! I bought one of these books on a whim, the other I was waiting for release in paperback and the third was a choice of the amazing @bernardineevaristo for Sky Arts Book Club. Palace Of The Peacock is a special re-release of a classic by Faber and looks fantastic. First published in 1960 and called a masterpiece by Monique Roffey, it looks at a crew who are trekking their way through the Guyana jungle. The Metal Heart is now one I wish I had plumped for in hardback, it was so beautiful! 😍 Set in 1940, this is a hauntingly rich Second World War story about courage, brutality, freedom and beauty and the essence of what makes us human during the darkest of times. Finally, The Joys of Motherhood was picked by Bernardine Evaristo as one of her classic recommendations for Sky Arts Book Club. This is the moving story of Nnu Ego, a West African woman who gives everything to her children which leaves her friendless and alone in middle age. This is a powerful commentary on polygamy, patriarchy and women’s changing roles in urban Nigeria. I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments! Woo hoo it’s Friday! I’m so glad this week has gone quickly. It’s time for a weekend of reading and relaxing. It’s also time for a book haul 😜 I love Rupi Kaur’s poetry, Milk and Honey is one of my favourite collections so when I saw Home Body, it made sense to snap it up. In this reflective journey, she walks the reader through the past, the present and the potential of the self. Kintu also caught my attention. It is the author’s debut novel (she also wrote the award winning The First Woman) and it tells the history of Uganda reimagined through the cursed bloodline of the Kintu clan. Finally, I picked up Your House Will Pay which I have already buddy read with bestie @keeperofpages Check out my review on Sunday to discover what I thought! It’s a powerful story of racial tensions and follows two families - one Korean-American and one African-American. I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments and have a great weekend everyone! 🤗😘 #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #booksbooksbooks #bookhaul #perfectpaperbacks #ineededthesebooks #homebody #rupikaur #poetrycollections #kintu #jennifernansubugamakumbi #yourhousewillpay #stephcha #morebooksplease https://www.instagram.com/p/CV4nwBHArP4/?utm_medium=tumblr

Hope you’re all well and ready for my second book haul of the week 😂 My bestie @tarheelreader is responsible for two of the books in this haul, the gorgeous classics The Secret Garden and The Wonderland Collection which are part of the Seasons Editions, a set of classic tales that are released for each season. Snowflake was bought for me by another bestie @keeperofpages I have seen this book around so much and something about it keeps calling to me! Hello my little bookworm friends and welcome back for the start of a brand new week! Monday is one of my book haul days, I’m doing two a week at the moment until I start cracking the whip on how many books I’m buying 🥺😩😂 more on that in a future post! The First Woman looks incredible. It recently won the Jhalak prize 2021 and tells the story of Kirabo, the equivalent of Eve in Ugandan mythology. It involves one girl’s search for her mother, what it’s like to be a woman and the implications for her future. I’m hoping to read this with the lovely @emmasbookishcorner Pandora’s Jar is the latest nonfiction book from an author I’ve recently discovered and adored - Natalie Haynes when I read A Thousand Ships with the fantastic @keeperofpages recently. This does what it says on the tin, in other words Haynes explores women in Greek mythology. Finally, we have Behold The Dreamers which I hope to read with the fabulous @tarheelreader at some point (our list is quite long! 😂) It follows a man called Jende, a Cameroonian immigrant who moves to America to find a better life for himself and his family. He manages to get an excellent job but his employers have some troubling secrets. I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Have you read anything by these authors before? What did you think? Let’s have a chat in the comments and have a lovely week everyone! 🤗😘 #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookhaul #bookhoarder #booksbooksbooks #itsnothoardingifitsbooks #paperbackbookhaul #thefirstwoman #jennifernansubugamakumbi #pandorasjarwomeningreekmyths #nataliehaynes #beholdthedreamers #imbolombue #ineededthesebooks https://www.instagram.com/p/CS7URGhg7su/?utm_medium=tumblr

Hello everyone and welcome to part 10 of my enormous book haul. Today I’m sharing three gorgeous hardbacks, one of which I’ve recently read and devoured, the fantastic Unsettled Ground by @writerclairefuller which has recently been shortlisted for the @womensprize 😁 I’ll be posting my review on Saturday. I really love the cover of An Ordinary Wonder and the synopsis sounds just as incredible. Finally, All The Young Men is a nonfiction read that focuses on the AIDS epidemic in the 1980’s. This was inspired by my recent watching of It’s A Sin, easily one of the best things I’ve ever seen on TV. I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors.
