Celebrating World Collage Day in Philadelphia

It was World Collage Day last Saturday .  A friend and I celebrated by going to a collage workshop at the Park Towne Place  Apartments on the Parkway in Philadelphia. InLiquid or a celebration of all things collage! In honor of World Collage Day, InLiquid is partnering with Philadelphia Collage Works and Collage Philadelphia to celebrate the imaginative, fun, and carefree World of Collage.…

The show’s walls are covered in photos from three queer photographers of different generations — T.W. Moore, German Ayala Vazquez and Robert Carter — who highlight the male form through a gentle and intimate lens. From the ceiling hangs sculptural chandeliers from, ​Michael Biello, another LGBTQ artist who literally brings the “soft light” into the room. 

The exhibition at the InLiquid Gallery in Olde Kensington runs until May 31.

“The Naked Show” brings together a group of fifteen InLiquid member artists whose work explores the many meanings of exposed human skin. Naked skin is the permeable and sensitive boundary between ourselves and the outside world, a border of endless fascination. Representations of nakedness take many forms and meanings, evoking intimacy, sensuality, beauty, rawness, voyeurism, censorship, vulnerability, and innocence. Seen here through painting, photography, and sculpture, each artist addresses the myriad limitations and potentials of our infinitely varied human bodies.

John Y. Wind contributes his 2013 sculpture My Surfboard (The Secret Life of Felix Jesus Consalvos). An upright vintage surfboard densely covered with stickers and other ephemera, the front presents a colorful pop art face to the public, while the back obsesses privately about erotic desire and matters of the flesh.

(little fool, little fool) Maria Spector and Ciaran Groarke collaboration. 14” x 12” 2020. Collage and paint on paper. New #uspsartproject collaboration completed with the wonderful artist Maria Spector @mariaspectorart - who mailed me her hand painted “The Fool” Tarot card, from her series appropriated from the Rider Waite-Smith Tarot Deck originally illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith circa 1909.I reproduced the lovely endpaper via color copier and collaged it into a decorative pattern, inserting the fool card randomly. I then distressed the piece with water and ModgePodge, and lastly hand painted with gouache and ink. I felt the piece is a comment on the artists hand versus technology and reproduction, as well as a dance between abstract expressionist “fine” art, and commercial, decorative art. The whole High/Low discussion in art history. In Flux is a show created by Didier William's graduate seminar class, StudioLab, at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. This interdisciplinary body of work explores the convergence of seventeen emerging artists who have worked alongside one another for the past two years. While each artist's practice remains independent, they all share markers of working and evolving within the same community.

The works comprising the show all mark deviations from each artist’s common practice. Through use of text, line, color and texture, each artist has created a new system of visual representation and language.

The self-selected works reveal the systematic processes the artists employ as their practices develop. With work ranging from installation and assemblage to experimental video, the exhibit traverses a broad spectrum of visual languages and methods of making. The works converge to form an ecosystem of artistic engagement, experimentation and transformation.

In Flux will be on view at the Hall Gallery at Crane Arts from April 10th to May 12th 2018.
