Bestial Mouths – R.O.T.T. (inmyskin) (Negative Gain Productions)

With the latest offering from industrial darkwave project Bestial Mouths we get an update on Lynette Cerezo's particular examination of the world around us and its apparent rapid descent into environmental doomsday and political/cultural disorder. Opening track “The Knife” and its fusion of soaring melodies and Cerezo's arresting vocals seeming to sing about self-protection and how those habits are no guarantee to shield you from getting hurt and from being duped by someone that earns your trust. The song also sets a musical theme that runs throughout the record of gorgeously sweeping and bright synth lines interweaving with gritty, textural sounds and what might be described as tribal rhythms if that tribe was one that emerged out of a near future wasteland.

Cerezo engages in the use of symbolic language in mythical terms in telling the stories on this album and her approach to vocalizing  dramatically expresses narratives of surviving abuse and oppression but with a tone of compassion in Cerezo's vocals. It's as though in confronting the situations and directing words to the agent of that harm there is a validation of those feelings that too often become a source of shame and a spirit of defeat. Cerezo reclaims that power and channels it into anthems of resistance. The songwriter has used her music as a vehicle for similar explorations and examinations of abuse, misogyny and bodily autonomy but this album seems more overtly written in the vein of dance music but dance as a sacred and therapeutic act of personal expression and liberation. The pulses of low end, the circular and ripping vocal style, the deeply atmospheric backdrop drones, the percussion accents and synth melodies come together in an alchemy of layered catharsis. The songs have a spiritual resonance with the sound of Xmal Deutschland but also with ADULT.. Yet all the while there is something immediately accessible about these songs as though Cerezo embraced and incorporated elements of synth pop like an underlying emotional touchstone for listeners to anchor its headier themes and harrowing sounds to the kind of music that can feel comfortable to many people. Earlier Bestial Mouths releases were more like electronic post-punk in sound and recent albums and EPs gave few obvious concessions to standard accessibility. This album, in spite of its unorthodox title, feels absolutely subversive in its fusion of dark industrial dance music and the avant-garde with borderline hip-hop beats and arresting and gorgeously chilling melodic hooks. As the album ends with the anthemic “Road Of Thousand Tears” the patient listener is rewarded with a gloriously uplifting song about loss and reconciliation that fans of Grace Jones and Light Asylum will find in a similar league of emotionally rich cleansing of lingering melancholia.
