For Innumerable Stars 2022
Prompt by BloodwingBlackbird for the character group "Farmer Maggot's Dogs & Oromë"
Inspired by the Strength card from the Rider–Waite Tarot deck and an abundance of existential terror. More after the jump.
(Fish's note--Noodle didn't quite finish this note before life intervened but says that the gist of it is here. Having listened to endless moaning about this for the past two months, I can confirm.)
----------------------
I probably intermittently screamed for about half an hour when I saw this character group nestled amongst other (ostensibly) more... approachable groups, but I like to suffer, so I sorrowfully set aside my draft of a M*A*S*H* pastiche set in the Houses of Healing and went on a journey through the gurgling bowels of the internet.
Eventually, I somehow stumbled on the Strength card from the Rider-Waite deck:
Tumblr media
"Ah," I said to myself sagely after reading precisely half a Wikipedia article, "Yes."
The Strength card depicts a lion and a woman with a lemniscate (infinity symbol) over her head. Some cards place the woman in a more explicit position of power, while others simply have them cuddling and the like.
Wikipedia says that A. E. Waite says that this card is associated with "power, energy, action, courage, magnanimity; also complete success and honours" while, when reversed, it is associated with "despotism, abuse of power, weakness, discord, sometimes even disgrace."
"Tulkas," I mumbled feverishly, "Melkor. Trees."
Sluggishly, I plumbed Google for some inspiration on Farmer Maggot's dogs. I emerged from that dark road with nothing but their names, which I promptly forgot.
"That lion looks like a hairy dog," I said, "And sure, let's make Oromë genderously ambiguous and worry about everything else later."
Oromë, along with most of the Valar, have always felt a little sinister to me, so the initial plan was to draw Oromë smilingly slitting lion-dog's throat, with the corpses of Nahar and the other two dogs lying around in the foreground. When I proposed this to my dog-loving friend, he stopped just short of attempting to execute me, but it was a near thing.
"But dogs," I pleaded, "Hunting. Death."
"No," he replied.
Defeated, I returned to the internet for inspiration. In the pits of delirium, I stumbled upon this Wikipedia article about Sköll, a wolf that supposedly spends its time chasing the sun.
"Wolves are basically dogs, but hairier," I declared.
From there my fate was sealed. I'm not a fan of hair in general, so Oromë was given a skull to wear, and I made some half-hearted attempts at mushrooms.
As the Strength card is the eighth card in the eight card in the Rider-Waite deck, I had the brilliant idea to substitute an eight-rayed sun for the Roman numerals at the top. Suddenly, I had a draft.
Tumblr media
Another early idea I'd had was to show Oromë being hunted by the three dogs, but that didn't seem to fit with the general theme of "Oromë, the magnanimous despot" I was going for, so I nixed it. I did want to have some sort of theme of vengeance, however, so the sköll-dog emerged from a blackened tree, which I imagined to be the withered remains of Laurelin (or even just your run-of-the-mill dead tree) to suggest the role of the Valar in the Darkening.
Time passed. Things got more dramatic. Sköll-dog became a limbless dragon-dog. I became geographically confused, found myself in Japan, and then the sun tragically lost both sunglasses and rays. Lion-dog became problematic. I helpfully forgot Nahar existed.
Tumblr media
Eventually, I lost my mind, gave lion-dog a mushroom infection, and decided to digitally burn out the ugliest tree I have ever drawn in my life.
I'm going to take a nap now.

the love that seeks a reward
Summary: “O King to whom all birds are dear, speed now this feathered shaft, and recall some pity for the Noldor in their need!” he had cried out to Manwë that fateful day, but what was that pity worth, when the destination had not changed?
Fingon, newly reembodied and feeling the pull of memory, is drawn to the Halls of Mandos in search of Maedhros, in search of answers. Though he discovers a horrible truth, a comforting presence encourages him to grasp hope in his hands once more.
Rating: General Words: 5290 Relationships: Fingon + Maedhros; Fingon & Nienna

Tolkien Fandom Event Calendar
Recently I’ve received some asks about events/weeks in the Tolkien fandom, so I thought I’d compile a list of those that I know about. This is not exhaustive, and dates are subject to change by the organizers of these events!
Other blogs you can check out are @tolkieneventsblog and @tolkienfandomevents, though I’m not sure how active those are. The @silmarillionwritersguild Discord also has a channel dedicated to signal boosts for all sorts of Tolkien-related & general fandom happenings, which is another excellent way to keep up with fandom goings-on.
Want to run your own event? Here’s some of my tips!
If your event is not on here and you’d like it to be, let me know and I can add it :) Note: I will only add events that have announced dates!

A green thought in a green shade - eye_of_a_cat - The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (TV 2022) [Archive of Our Own]
Written for @greyjedijaneite for the Innumerable Stars exchange.
Title: A Green Thought In A Green Shade.
Fandom: Rings of Power
Rating: G
Length: 4400 words
Pairing: Galadriel/Celeborn
Sample:
“Where did we live?” he says.
She all but flinches at that. “Doriath. Do you remember anything of Doriath?”
He doesn’t, but for the first time that answer seems to relieve her.
“It was a long time ago,” she says. “It’s gone now.”
And that seems right. Something in her words strikes a deep chord of sorrow within him. “Were we happy there?”
Notes: I am sure I've said a few times that I hope they don't do Convenient Narrative Amnesia to explain where Celeborn's been in Rings of Power. Buuuuuut, in fic, I wanted to have at least one try at writing it :)

Sic vita est @i-did-not-mean-to Rated: T N-CFC(s)
Based on the lovely art #148 by maglorslostsilmaril (lovely author AND writer!), this is a collection of short stories about the different daughters of Fëanor and the chaos that seems to pursue them obstinately. Beta-ed by the amazing cuarthol (again, excellent author, please go check it out!!!)
It's a series of ludicrous, humorous, and often light-hearted incidents with softer (and sometimes slightly sad) undertones.
We hope that you'll find some pleasure in this; I have taken a few liberties when it came to ages and timelines in order to make all the babies meet and this is far from canon-compliant.
Basically, it's a happier retelling for all the characters, a re-do if you so want, and I truly hope that you'll feel the love and the hope in it.

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Let’s spread the self-love 🤍
Acid on the Horizon [Voltron, Keith/Lance & Shiro/Allura, 2017, 29,975 words, rated M]
With Shiro gone and only Keith left, the Jaeger Gridelin Leo needs a new co-pilot. Enter Lance, a cadet Marshal Allura has seen potential in. And far away, on the horizon, something stirs.
The first multichapter fanfic I finished. Pacific Rim Au. I was super proud of myself for finishing this one, and I still think it's pretty good even if it's, you know.. fucking Voltron.
2. Kick the Beam [Dragon Age, Fenris/Garrett Hawke, 2013, 7,823 words, rated M]
Leandra wants Hawke to get married. Hawke, however, is head over heels for a belligerent, broody elf. You can see where this is going.
I remember this being super fun to write, especially Hawke's pov, he's just such a fun character. It's a little old but still a very fun little read.
3. Stitch by Stitch [DC Comics, Jason Todd/Roy Harper, 2019, 17,843 words, rated E]
Jason is injured and finds a safe harbour in Roy Harper. An old teenage crush comes bubbling to the surface, even through Jason's innumerable personal demons. There is also the complication of Roy's daughter Lian.
Still very happy with this one, getting to explore Jason before a tentative rapprochement with the Batfam was great. Fitting pre-52 Roy with Jason was a fascinating puzzle to figure out, and I adored writing Lian.
4. The Baffled King Composing [The Silmarillion, Maedhros/Fingon, 2021, 13,007 words, rated E]
Great deeds have rekindled the dormant flame of hope within Maedhros. With one Silmaril taken back, he is now certain that the Enemy is not invincible. His plan now is to unite all the peoples of Beleriand under a single banner, and together they will all be victorious against Morgoth. The Shadow will be lifted, and the Oath will be fulfilled. And then, finally, he and Fingon can rest easy again.
I am so grateful to the Tolkien Reverse Summer Bang for giving me the opportunity to partner up with the wonderful @nikosheba and make something amazing I'm still so proud of. It launched me back into writing properly.
5. Ever Decreasing Circles [Star Wars, Din Djarin/Luke Skywalker, 2022, 112,190 words, rated: E]
His newest (small, green) student has been completely inconsolable, and so Luke Skywalker decides to track down the Mandalorian Grogu calls father, however long it takes. Meanwhile, Din Djarin is coming to terms with the new, painful absence of the most important being in his life, and this damn Darksaber.
This one kept getting bigger and bigger as I was writing it. It's the longest fic I've ever written and I proved to myself I could do it. The urge to go back and edit some bits and pieces is strong (I'll get round to that when I print myself a physical copy) and the way I view Luke changed like halfway through, stupidly, but I'm still like... proud of myself for writing the Romantic Sewer fic and also starting a series which now sits at 176k+ words.

Shadow Ball
My contribution for @innumerable-stars 2022
There were gems, hidden deep in the mountains North of Tirion. Gems, ore, and veins of purest gold, which matched Laurelin’s eerie light. For eons, this was nothing but rumors; stories that were told around the open fires. That grew and evolved with every new telling so that many versions circulated. It was rumored until brave folk ventured far into the forests and began to put the very rumors to a test. Now, these stories were told around the fire, even though it still had been a long way to where they were now. For Caranthir, realistic as he is, stories told by the fire aren't enough. He wants to understand the gems' nature and everything that comes with it.
Caranthir-centric, Caranthir & Fëanor, Science & Creations, Valinor, Good Dad Fëanor, Foreshadowing/Foresight

A full card once again!
Leave kudos on a fic: Scratch by NanakiBH. Some Eruri porn—an exercise in trust and control. My favorite!
Reblog an art post: this adorable mashup of Critical Role and Spirited Away. Which I now want to see more of.
Message a creator: I reached out on anon for this one!
Rec a curator: done here for this TVDU archive blog. They both make their own gifsets of the Mikaelson family and reblog others’—truly a gift to the fandom!
Free square: I spent innumerable hours this week writing Attack on Titan fic and screaming about it to a friend. I also streamed Andor with a friend and fawned over how good it was—if you are a Star Wars fan, watch Andor.
Reblog an edit: this comparison of the 1994 Interview with the Vampire film and the 2022 series.
Reblog a fic post: Two Birds, One Stone by ywhiterain. A lovely little piece between Klaus and Elijah from The Originals—they begin the fic fighting, but before the end they’re making out. 😏
Comment on a fic: Avoiding a Lecture by ReadingtoMusic. This Fullmetal Alchemist piece features Ed and Al skipping an important appointment for some quality time together. (Some Elricest time together.) A sweet look at the golden boys!
Promo a fan project: this Eruri zine that’s releasing later this month. I didn’t join in time to contribute, but I’m still excited to read!
Thanks again to @thehighfiveproject for organizing!

Asemic Texts is the shadow of the texts which lies invisible or quite flow of words, flickering, moving and softer in shape free of meaning for the viewers to form their own associations.
The vast expanse of the sky with innumerable stars and galaxies are the texts in other forms or source of inspirations, which is hard to comprehend as it points to our limitations of expression through spoken and written texts. The next closer and tangible to comprehend as the initial source of texts can be ‘Nature’ or the ‘Atmosphere’ with its many colours, shapes and life forms.
Through the research in Asemic texts I have made the works “Woods Of Asemic Text,” in long semi-translucent plastic/ paper sheets flowing from the ceiling to ground to open texts reflecting the objects found freely in nature. Within its transparency the long plastic/ baking paper reflects texts like objects of nature on both sides as an invitation for audience to unpack in many ways.
“Two Chairs” is the extension of the first work. The image of the chair is solid like steel frame in our minds. The chairs are deconstructed with back and seat removed to subvert the ideas of power allowing instead beads like texts to flow within it getting scattered with sand, shells, grass, twigs collected from various beaches in Auckland/ west Auckland found in open atmosphere  for people to unfurl new texts by reflecting in their hearts and minds.
Asemic Texts aims at subverting control of free expressions by heavy handed governments and also limitations of language usage being reduced to mere tools of trade and commerce. It frees the texts from narrow perspectives by not serving any purpose of meaning making. Thus, Asemic texts is an invitation to audience to free and expand their horizon of imagination.
Major artists as point of reference in my Asemic texts  art making are Argentinean artist, Mirtha Dermisache’s (1940-2012) Sin título (Texto), Brazilian artist Mira Schendel’s (1919-1988) Graphic objects (Objetos gráficos) and Chinese artist Xu Bing’s (1965-) Book From The Sky.
The book titled Asemic; The Art of Writing by Peter Schwinger has also been my point of reference in developing ideas on Asemic Texts.
   List of works
 1.       Lamatul Firdous, Woods of Asemic Text, 2022, plastic sheets/ Baking paper, Acrylics, colour pastels.
 2.       Lamatul Firdous, Two Chair, 2022, two chairs deconstructed, beads painted in acrylics and twigs, sand, grass, shells etc collected from Auckland/ West Auckland beaches.
