fanfic writer interview
tagged by: @sluttyhenley thanks honey <3
what fandoms do you write in?
actively this year: top gun and the camelot rising trilogy
dormant fandoms that get 500 word spurts of Gobbets once per fiscal quarter: masters of the air, shadow and bone, mission: impossible (though this one will likely get More attention next year once m:i8 drops)
how many words have you published in 2024?
9,950. which is the lowest my word count has been in a While but it's mainly because i wrote a lot of drafts this year that i have yet to publish
what is your greatest achievement this year?
creatively, it is 100% starting The Care of the Flyer. i really do love how much love it gets from everyone, despite its intended audience being me and two tumbleweeds (who know exactly who they are). i'm very proud of how much research and Effort i put into it.
personally, it's the fact that i was the first person to publish a fic in a new ship tag.
what are your top three fics you've written this year?
conveniently, i have only published three fics this year. would you look at that.
The Care of the Flyer
some kind of secret
tell me my story
what was your biggest pit of despair moment?
at some point around the end of october i realized that i had not written a Single Word in any project or silly little promptfill for almost 2 months, which was Not A Great Feeling. i then proceeded to not write anything until the end of november. oof.
what have you learned?
baby's first smut fic got published this year, so how to write smut is definitely a lesson i learned. i also did a lot of work in character motivations, since flight surgeon!maverick in Care of the Flyer is a much different mav than the mav we know from tg86/tgm. it really was a good exercise in examining what drives a protagonist (maverick) to do something, and how they would react to different circumstances (namely, iceman).
did you beta any fics? any faves you want to shout out?
i did! i beta'd for @starrybouquet on in for a penny, in for a pound, her fem!maverick AU. i also do a lot of spot betas for @twinkboimler in helping to restructure sentences, find intended meaning, etc.
what three fics have you read this year that you love?
to leave this all behind (halo round his head) is maybe everything i wanted from a crown of candy but did not get. lapin is far and away my favorite character in the campaign, and knowing that zac had thunder step prepared but didn't get to use it because of the death saves hurt my soul so bad. this was a soothing balm.
the last scene in when the time comes lived in my memory for weeks after i read it, and then i didn't bookmark it like a dummy. i spent the better part of the year trying to find it, only to run across it and rediscover how Good it is when i was hunting down recs for a friend like one of those truffle-sniffing pigs. it's such a beautiful What-If in such a (relatively) short fic. *chef's kiss*
long time followers of ladywaffles may be aware that yours truly is partially deaf, and learning ASL is a life goal of mine. the way that iceman and maverick prioritize learning it in A Good Landing (link) after ice's surgery and the realism in not having the words to explain yourself, despite knowing your own feelings? that's that good shit. also, i'm a sucker for a middle-aged (retirement aged) romance, so this fic checked a lot of my boxes.
what ideas are percolating for next year?
certainly the next part of The Care of the Flyer; i've already sent some snippets of maverick's pithy emails to the group chat, and they've been well received :)
i also want to return to camelot rising and For Real finish the WIPs i started when i was babysitting stinky microbes at my internship
(and also the top gun omegaverse AU that i've had in my brain since february 2023 what who said that)
who do you want to thank?
@twinkboimler for constantly putting up with my moaning about writing in between my complaints about [insert inane everyday topic here]
@sluttyhenley and @redbelles for letting me be the audience to the traveling show, and for letting me fling pasta of all kinds at them to figure out what's fun and funky to write
@starrybouquet for playing in the sandbox with me
tagging: @twinkboimler @redbelles @starrybouquet and you, dear reader, should you choose to accept your mission.

Is it bad that I don't pay attention anymore when people complain about antis in my fandom? What they usually mean isn't "I got harassed" or "people are sending me hate", it's usually just "someone left a comment on my grimdark AU saying it's not like canon" or "someone pointed out the story contained /insert form of prejudice here/ that wasn't tagged for" and I just don't see that as noteworthy. Yeah, if your AU diverges so far from canon that there's no connection, people will notice. Some people will be into it. Some will not. Ignoring all the positive comments to focus on the one guy who doesn't like it seems silly to me. And if you put a form of bigotry in your story, people are allowed to have opinions on that. That's not hateful. That's just thinking.
IDK, maybe I've been hardened by years of actual death threats, rape threats, suicide bait, people telling me I deserved to be a victim of pedophilia as a child, people calling me slurs, people saying they hoped my mother died, etc., but I just can't get behind "waaah someone pointed out the thing that is undeniably in my fic" as "anti" behavior. Anti-ism involves a lot more sex and violence and a lot more panic and insults. If they're not saying you're a shit person, then to me it doesn't read as being harassed by antis. It's more like you've been noticed by a person (cue 'ordeal of being known' pithy meme phrase here).

11 Questions WIP tag meme:
Thanks for tagging me, @pomegranate-belle!
I’ll tag: @blackflirtlarping, @kiichu, @transezual, @eatingfireflies and @i-demand-a-hug.
1. How long have you been writing?
I’ve tried to start writing something a bunch of times during my life, but I only really got anywhere when I did some writing for the college magazine when I was at uni. Which was... eight years ago now oh fuck I’m old.
2. What are the major themes of your current wip(s)?
The main theme of TUoHS has to be, ‘Haruhi Suzumiya would be a dangerous fucking nightmare in any piece of fiction that wasn’t at its base slice-of-life.’ Because, duh, she would be. I’ll also need to work in my take on the usual Danganronpa hope/despair themes, but I’m willing to let that develop as I come up with later murders rather than lock it in precisely now.
3. What do you want people to take away from your story once they’ve read it?
An experience similar to playing the Danganronpa games. If readers can enjoy the murder mysteries - following along closely enough to enjoy working out some things in advance but not finding the whole thing too obvious - I’ll be happy.
4. Would you be excited if people write fanfiction about your wip(s)?
Probably? There’s some good hooks in the past half of the story which might attract some recursive fanfiction. And maybe people will like the OCs and want to do fluffier stuff with them that I wouldn’t consider. I think I would feel more comfortable if people were to contact me before doing something so I could vet it. Everything before the story is fair game, but there’s quite a bit of idea-space after the story that I’d want to reserve for sequels I want to write.
5. What’s your go-to writing beverage?
When I’m doing ‘write drunk, edit sober’ my go to drink is vodka-coke.
6. Who is your favorite oc? Tell me about them!
Ooh! Close choice between two:
Mayumi Uehara (The Ultimate Mathematician): Is essentially a self-insert (I knew long before starting to plan that I wanted an Ultimate Mathematician character) and also the OC slotting into one of my favourite Danganronpa archetypes. Plus my favourite line from TUoHS, the one I go and re-read when I’m feeling down, is a line of dialogue by her.
Hitomi Maeda (The Ultimate Chemist): I’ve got a database of all my characters, and one section is for descriptions of their personalities: quite a few paragraphs of text for most OCs as I’ve built them up. Hitomi’s now just reads ‘I have a massive crush on her.’ That’s enough to make her the easiest character for me to write by far. Plus she’s gotten me out of a couple of dead-ends while writing.
7. Do you feel that mistakes are important learning tools in the writing journey?
Not really? Unlike with maths or chess, I don’t really learn from my writing mistakes as I look over them. I just get locked-in on them, unable to change them without the help of the help of a beta-reader.
8. Rank your ocs by their capability in a footchase (either running after or from smth, your choice)
Let’s see:
Katsuya Terasaki (The Ultimate Firefighter)
Taichi Fujino (The Ultimate Driver)
Arata Nakayama (The Ultimate Archaeologist)
Ikko Watari (The Ultimate Scam Artist)
Satoru Ishihara (The Ultimate Journalist)
Hitomi Maeda (The Ultimate Chemist)
Yayoi Mikawa (The Ultimate Cosplayer)
Konosuke Kamio (The Ultimate Film Critic)
Mayumi Uehara (The Ultimate Mathematician)
I’ve long had a similar list ranking (both my OCs and the Haruhi Suzumiya characters) by who would win a fight. The big changes for this list are that Ikko Watari has shot up from last-but-one place, while Yayoi has dropped from third among my OCs. Also, while Katsuya is first out of my OCs on both lists, I’ve decided that his Talent has enough of an impact that he’s about equal to Haruhi in a race, rather than significantly worse than her in a fight.
9. Does your wip have romance? tell me about it!! if not tell me about a friendship/important relationship in your wip!!
I was about halfway through the sixth chapter when I realised that Arata Nakayama was crushing like hell on Mayumi Uehara. Had a bit of a think about it, decided it was mutual, and edited back to chapter four to hint at more of it. It doesn’t come from a particularly positive place for either of them: Mayumi is one of the few Ultimate students who doesn’t trigger Arata’s hangups about Hope’s Peak, while Mayumi (who as a self-insert - of me, no less - is about as close to an existence of pure selfishness as you can get) notices that Arata treats her better than the rest of the cast, and likes it. But I’ve decided that their romance itself will be happy and healthy. It’s not a major part of the story - just offstage and a side detail like most of the other romances are in DR - but it does have effects on the plot. I’ve also decided that they will also get together in the past half of TUoHS, and that they would in any non-killing-game AU.
10. Do you believe in the advice kill your darlings?
Yeah: I have had cases where getting out of a block has needed me to get rid of a particularly witty but dead-end-aimed sentence. Most recent one was during the last part of the first trial, where I had three clues left to use and wrote a pithy way of introducing the first of them. But I quickly realised that talking about that clue would set the killer off, so no-one would get the chance to bring up the other two. I had to go back and use a different clue first, even if it wasn’t quite the same slam-dunk. That’s a general point, really: ‘Kill your darlings’ is particularly important in a mystery story like TUoHS, where controlling the information each character has is crucial for keeping the story on track. If a pretty phrase gives or requires from a character details they shouldn’t know, then it needs to go.
11. Do you prefer plotting or worldbuilding? Why?
The stories I’ve written haven’t needed lots of worldbuilding; they’ve all been hugging close to the world of the originals. I’d like to be good at worldbuilding, but I suspect I won’t be nearly as good as I am at plotting.

5 interview hacks to crush it and land the job of your dreams
by Anna Bahney @annabahney May 23, 2017: 12:07 PM ET
You have more control than you think in a job interview — it’s up to you to take it.
Employers say that even though an interview can be a formality, you need to actively prepare and listen for cues in order to stand out.
‘; for (i = 0; i 4) afterParagraphFour = true; currentParagraph = storytext.childNodes[i]; heights += currentParagraph.clientHeight; if (heights >= limit && insertAfterThisParagraphIndex === -1) insertAfterThisParagraphIndex = SMARTASSET.setDivIndex(i); console.log(“insert after paragraph number ” + i); console.log(“HEIGHTS = ” + heights); console.log(“LIMIT = ” + limit); } /* div with id=”ie_column” */ else if (storytext.childNodes[i].nodeName.toLowerCase() === ‘div’ && storytext.childNodes[i].id !== “undefined” && storytext.childNodes[i].id ===”ie_column”) heights = 0; limit = 80; insertAfterThisParagraphIndex = -1 /* embeds from twitter, facebook, youtube */ else if (storytext.childNodes[i].nodeName.toLowerCase() === ‘div’ && storytext.childNodes[i].classList.contains(’embed’)) heights = 0; limit = 80; insertAfterThisParagraphIndex = -1 /* cnn video player */ else if (storytext.childNodes[i].nodeName.toLowerCase() === ‘div’ && storytext.childNodes[i].classList.contains(‘cnnplayer’)) heights = 0; limit = 80; insertAfterThisParagraphIndex = -1 /* images */ else if (storytext.childNodes[i].nodeName.toLowerCase() === ‘img’) heights = 0; limit = 80; /* images stored in figure tags */ else if (storytext.childNodes[i].nodeName.toLowerCase() === ‘figure’) heights = 0; limit = 80; } if (heights >= 875 && afterParagraphFour) storytext.childNodes[insertAfterThisParagraphIndex].insertAdjacentHTML(‘afterend’, smartAssetDiv); smartasset = document.getElementById(‘smartasset-article’); smartasset.style.float = ‘left’; // allows module to have text float to right smartasset.style.marginRight =’20px’; smartasset.style.marginBottom =’25px’; } SMARTASSET.setSmartAssetScript = function() console.log(‘starting setSmartAssetScript’); SA = document.SA ; SMARTASSET.setSmartAssetDiv(); SMARTASSET.setSmartAssetScript();
We talked to seasoned employers, who have clocked thousands of interviews between them, to hear what strategies set apart the superstars they hired from the merely proficient candidates they let walk out the door.
1. Be prepared: The interview has already begun
Long before you’re face to face with your potential employer, they’re evaluating you in other ways: your résumé, your social media presence, colleagues you have in common. Ensure that your professional, digital and personal appearance all present the story you want to convey.
“The interview begins when you apply for the job and doesn’t end until you sign the offer papers,” says Mike Steib, chief executive officer of the XO Group, which includes sites like The Knot and The Bump.
Have questions ready. But never ask about anything you can find online.
“When someone’s questions could have been answered with a simple web search, it tells me they didn’t prepare,” says Steib, who has also worked in cultures as diverse as McKinsey and Company, NBC Universal/General Electric and Google.
Preparation is the main area where employers immediately see who’s serious.
“I’ve seen everything from to obsessive prep to winging it,” says Michael Dougherty, the chief executive officer of Pencils of Promise, an international non-profit supporting children’s literacy.
2. Know your ‘win-themes’
Unless you’re in the enviable “buyer’s side” position of being courted by an employer, you’ll probably need to sell yourself in the interview.
Why not prepare like a salesperson? In sales, ‘win-themes’ are the pithy but powerful takeaways a pitch person wants buyers to get from a presentation like “small but nimble” “reliable” or the “best value.”
For job candidates, it might be that you’re a “leader,” have “strong relationships in the industry,” or are a “creative problem solver.”
Take the time before the interview to clearly establish what your “win-themes” are. They should be the strongest and most compelling reasons you are a match for this organization.
Once they’re set, you’ll have a clear map for memorable responses in the interview because they will all lead back to your “win-themes,” reinforcing the qualities you want to get across.
“Your fate will come down to two or three things and how they felt when they met you,” Steib says. “But if in every question I asked you, you found a way to work back to those win-themes, those will be the things I’ll remember.”
3. Drop everything for a test
Nearly a quarter of interviews in 2014 involved a skills test, thought exercise or other kind of experiential task. That’s up from 16% in 2010, according to a study from Glassdoor.
It’s easy to understand why. For hiring managers, that kind of hands-on audition is what pushes one candidate clearly ahead of another.
If a position elicits 100 résumés, says Dougherty, there may be 15 who get an introductory call. That’s whittled down to two or three who have the skills and would likely be a good fit for the role, he says. They get the skills test.
With few exceptions the test is what determines who is going forward, said Dougherty. His advice: “Crush the homework. Drop everything to nail it.”
4. Be real, even on weakness
Many interviewers ask some version of a question about your biggest weakness.
Please don’t say: “I’m a perfectionist,” “I work too hard,” or “I care too much.”
When he hears those, Steib replies, “I’m going to give you one more chance.”
Your interviewer may not be so generous.
Steib says it’s important to be authentic when talking about your weaknesses because it shows self awareness, humility and the ability to grow.
Instead, he said, set up your response like this: “In the past I’ve gotten feedback on this, I’ve taken it on in this way and this is how I’m improving on it.”
5. Listen for cues for connection
Especially when there’s a big experience or age gap between you and the interviewer, it’s up to you to find ways to connect. Listening is the way to do it.
It may be connecting around the interviewer’s specific goals for the company or small talk she made before the interview began. Latch on to those as ways for her to remember you.
Dougherty said he recently had a terrific interview with a woman who mentioned a photographer he hadn’t heard of. The next day the candidate followed up with an email thanking him for his time and linking to information about the photographer and why his work might be great for the organization.
That’s a candidate who made a lasting impression.
