uh..i was wondering this for a long time..Does K'atini translate to 'suck it up' ?

This is actually a pretty common misconception, due to translation errors and SWTOR’s mandalorian community’s inability to double check connotations before spreading posts around. Originally, before it was revised in later editions of the mando’a dictionary, K’atini translates colloquially to it’s only pain, not “suck it up.”

K’atini can mean suck it up as a quick-and-easy translation, but when we get down to it, the connotations behind “suck it up” are pretty unfortunate when used by the wrong people or placed in the wrong hands. The fact is that the english translation holds meanings that are separate and different than what it means within mando’a itself. It’s also not a direct translation, and it’s not a good one.

Suck it up, frankly, holds a negative connotation behind it. It’s not inspiring, it’s not interesting, what it is is a slap down when you’re already down, and it’s hugely dismissive of the situation and the suffering that is often the case in that exact moment. But K’atini … is the exact and far opposite. 

K’atini is what you say when your world is ending and you keep going. K’atini is what you say when you get your ass whooped and you stand back up. “It’s only pain [ and pain won’t stop me ].” And that’s the biggest thing that everyone apparently seems to miss or overlook, and it’s deeply disappointing every time I see it lmao.

K’atini comes from atiniir, which means to endure, to put up with, to take it (like a beating). The K’ addition comes from the imperative prefix, ke’, k’ — it’s what you tack on before a word to indicate an order or a command.

The meaning tied into the words is not to just put up with, the meaning behind it is to take a beating and stand back up. The quintessential pivotal moment where the protagonist has been beaten and knocked down and we, the audience, are unsure if they can survive — and then not only do they just survive, no, they get right back up and spit in the face of whoever knocked them down.

It’s what you say when you think you can’t go on, but you do. It’s what you say when you don’t think you can take another step, but you do it anyway. It’s what someone says to someone else when they need to motivate them to keep going.

It’s what Torian Cadera says to the PC when he heals them in SWTOR, and it’s the perfect choice of words.

K’atini — it’s only pain, get up. Keep going. You can and you will survive this.

And that is what K’atini actually means.

Oh gosh, I’ve probably got over 20, though I really only use about half a dozen—the rest are just background dudes, or ones I haven’t done anything with yet. Most are Devaronians, as anyone who follows me no doubt knows, but I also have a few Zabraks (Cer and his parents) as well as a droid or two (0R-D3 and GG-4T). I also have a Duros and a Weequay coming up soon, though I don’t wanna spill too much about them just yet :D

what do you think is essential to creating an original mandalorian clan? c':

I think my first suggestion is to determine the “when” and “where” of the clan. Are they a clan that’s been around since the Mandalorian Wars, or did they come into being a little bit later (or a lot-a-bit later?). Having an idea of a timeline or genealogy, however rough, helps to get an idea of the scale and scope of a clan—and possibly figure out the politics they may or may not be leaning into. Knowing the history, or establishing a history, (even if they’re a new clan!) is very important IMO, because every clan has their own quirks, their own Way Of Doing Things.

For the most part clans should also be acutely aware of the politics of the time and have Opinions on them—even if they’re the “I try not to have opinions because opinions are dangerous” opinions lmao—because politics, both on the domestic scale (Mandalorian Space) and the galactic scale (Republic vs Empire, Jedi vs Sith, Jedi vs Mandalorians, etc) have always directly affected even the most removed, isolated clan, no matter when in the history of Star Wars.

You might want to figure out where the clan has originated from, if they’ve originated from anywhere at all—they might not be! Are they a diaspora, wandering or resettled outside of Mandalorian space, or do they currently reside in one of the many systems still located within Mandalorian space? Do they live close to civilization, within highly tech-advanced city, or out in the outskirts a good distance from the nearest town? Are they always on the move? And if they’re isolated or far out, how do they deal with emergencies—especially medical ones?

Are they spread out / scattered, or do the majority of them settle in or near the clan home? When the clan tries to organize a “meet up,” are they able to do so in a short time or if they put out the call to the rest of their aliit would it take days for them to arrive? If your clan has a specialty or specialization (I’m under the impression that the one you’re working on currently does, right? *u * ) then is everyone expected to continue the family business, or help out in some way directly related to that specialty? And, both wrt the business but also outside of it, how is that clan organized? Do they have a rough hierarchy that only really is followed in emergencies, or do they have a very strict chain of authority they follow? Like, do they have Clan Elder(s) that they’re expected to listen to, or do they instead have a democratic sort of meet-a-consensus-together thing going on? 

Do they have matching armor or color scheme !!! That’s like, the fun part lmao.

All of this is just like … very rough logistics. There are clans that can be very small and maintain a small number of people, but provide important resources and as a result have a huge base of influence and alliances, however casual or familial they might be. Or, I mean, they can also be huge too—nothing wrong with really, really big families B’) … though it can get unwieldy due to the sheer number of characters involved (speaking from experience here, bc I and some friends have to keep a gdoc as our Ragtag Clan is comprised of over 30 characters, and sometimes it’s hard to keep track of who knows who and who adopted who or who brought in who, but we’re also like … 4 people so that has something to do with it lmao). 

Sorry for the length / many many questions lmao, just … when it comes to world-building I like to pose as many questions as possible, because the more information you have to work off of as a foundation, the more depth and history you can offer to individual characters, and through them develop the clan even more. 

OH ALSO, since I saw your posts about your clan, I want to extra emphasize the location of the clan is also very important—because of the domestication and training that your clan is going to be involved in. Depending on where they are will likely affect the types of... I guess I’ll say breeds? that they’ll be caring for and training. Like if they’re on a planet or in a climate that is very cold, the animals they’d be caring for would very likely have longer thicker fur than as compared to if they were located in a warmer climate, or even vastly different than, say, if they were based in the tropics with easy access to the ocean.

I think it depends on the situation? Like when I’m out on placement I enjoy talking to my patients and sometimes at work I don’t mind talking to some of the regular customers, but if I’m on the way home or going somewhere and someone just starts talking to me on public transport I don’t really like it and depending on the time I feel really uncomfortable??? idk??

I think most people I know are surprised when I get really hyped up about something? People are always used to me being reserved most of the time I guess.

Ohhhhh man, I don’t know I like various types of home designs?? I guess either a nice apartment or a two story house with a modern kitchen with black and white minimalist theme, with a lot of plants and a big window?? Oh I would love to have a huge deep bath though!!

She’d definitely be the one to ask—just as with everything in life, Hes prefers to take action and take it fast, rather than just sit and wait for something to come. If there’s someone she wants to get with, she’s gonna go up to ‘em, give ‘em her best pickup line, and if all goes well she’ll have a date set up for the next night.
