Back on my bullshit (by which I mean, in this case, both "Skyrim" and "being unhinged about fraught father figure relationships even when they're not all that central to the narrative") but. Occasionally I think about how what we see of Arngeir's characterization beyond generic mystical mentor type is basically that of a guy with a naturally hot temper who, over the course of a long life spent meditating in a monastery, has painstakingly learned (though not mastered!) the art of chilling the fuck out or at least graciously apologizing (even as that same cloistered religious lifestyle has probably also fueled a bit of a stubborn/dogmatic streak).

And then I think about what this potentially suggests re: his feelings toward noted local stubborn intemperate hothead Ulfric Stormcloak (y'know, the guy who broke all their previously-shared religious vows yet still deferentially refers to him as "Master Arngeir") and go ever so slightly insane

"The Memorable Deeds and Sayings of the Romans," a compilation of stories about ancient customs and heroes written in the first century CE by Valerius Maximus, was widely used in the Middle Ages as a textbook for rhetoric. This large miniature appeared at the beginning of book two, "Concerning Morals and Customs." In a spacious dining hall, Valerius, dressed in blue on the left, instructs the Emperor Tiberius, to whom he dedicated his book, on the value of temperance. Valerius points out the joyous and intemperate peasants at the front table, who cavort wildly, drink, fall down, and sleep. In contrast, the nobles in the back are models of temperance: evenly spaced at the orderly table, their bodies rigid, they eat with great sobriety. Through this contrast the illuminator suggested that nobles are inherently more temperate, an interpretation that does not derive from the text. Yet in the hands of the witty Master of the Dresden Prayer Book, the bad example of the pleasure-loving peasants is easily the more endearing one.

Song of the Day

Hey what's that? Not initiative that's for sure by Intemperance, off the album It's An Ugly Genre Inherited by Dogma (2022)

I don't usually go for instrumental tracks, but this song really spoke to me. There's such an interesting element of storytelling here, even without lyrical components to voice the story being told.

Things I love about this song

The drum wash here is so warm, which contradicts the almost sinister string section that lurks in the background

The bass line comes in and out with so much grace it's almost like it's floating

Each layer of this track is so intentionally composed and works so well with every other piece of the song, it's mindblowing
