I am exploring more design patterns using this size of rectangle pieces. This time I did a spiral pattern made with four pieces of one color. Using around 6 colors in total on the tray, the spiral pattern repeats. This black porcelain tray is very sturdy. 🌱 💀 Usnea In the medieval period those suffering from wounds inflicted in battle, or a variety of other ailments could be treated with ‘Unguentum armariun’ a magnetic treatment from bandages or medicines that had been infused with a liniment using usnea. Usnea was the highly prized moss that was collected from the skulls of the dead, preferably the skulls of individuals who had died in battle or had met violent ends. This moss was considered medicinally potent due to the belief that it contained the remaining spirit, especially if that spirit had been trapped by a violent death which in turn had been absorbed by the moss or lichen growing on the skull. This spirit could then be absorbed to empower the sick person’s spirit and heal them. All art shown is original and inspired by the actual history described. The bottles are handmade using molds made from actual 18th and 19th century bottles, and decorated with artwork inspired by the macabre history of medicine. 17th January 1820, birth of English novelist and poet Anne Brontë, sister of Emily and Charlotte Brontë, best known for her feminist novel ‘The Tenant of Wildfell Hall’ written in 1848 under the pseudonom Acton Bell. A month before her birthday in 1848, her sister Emily, author of ‘Wuthering Heights’ had died on the 19th December, followed on the 24th September by the death of her brother Branwell. Both her sister and brother had died of tuberculosis, (and also in Branwell’s case alcoholism, and laudanum and opium addiction). Anne herself would succumb to tuberculosis on Monday, 28th May 1849, at the age of 29. It is thought that all the Brontë’s deaths were also aided by the harsh winter conditions of 1848, and the contamination of water in their household through contamination from run off from the church's graveyard.
