A furious diplomatic spat between Israel and the United Nations has broken out, with Israeli officials calling for the resignation of Secretary General Antonio Guterres after he said Hamas’ October 7 attacks on the country “did not happen in a vacuum.” At a Security Council meeting, Guterres called for a humanitarian ceasefire on Tuesday amid the deepening crisis in Gaza, and told the Security Council that “clear violations of international humanitarian law” are being witnessed. He called Hamas’ October 7 murder and kidnap rampage “appalling,” and said “nothing can justify the deliberate killing, injuring and kidnapping of civilians, or the launching of rockets against civilian targets.” “It is important to also recognize the attacks by Hamas did not happen in a vacuum,” Guterres said. “The Palestinian people have been subjected to 56 years of suffocating occupation. They have seen their land steadily devoured by settlements and plagued by violence; their economy stifled; their people displaced and their homes demolished.”[...]

His comments angered Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen, who was in the chamber as Guterres spoke. “In what world do you live?” said Cohen. “Definitely, this is not our world.” Writing on social media later, Cohen said that “after the October 7th massacre, there is no place for a balanced approach. Hamas must be erased off the face of the planet!” Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, called on Guterres to resign, saying he had “expressed an understanding for terrorism and murder.” Then, on Wednesday, Erdan said his country will block visas for United Nations officials. It had already rejected an application by the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Martin Griffiths, Erdan told the Israeli Army Radio channel. “It’s time we teach them a lesson,” added Erdan.[...]

In an effort to “set the record straight,” Guterres said Wednesday he was “shocked by misinterpretations by some of my statement yesterday in the Security Council – as if I was was justifying acts of terror by Hamas.”[...]

But Guterres did not back away from his Tuesday call for a ceasefire, or from his nod towards the historical treatment of Palestinians. The main United Nations agency working in Gaza said it would be forced to halt its operations by Wednesday evening due to a lack of fuel, with the territory having faced days of airstrikes and near-total blockade following the Hamas attacks. Efforts in the UN to endorse a ceasefire have so far been scuppered, with the US vetoing a draft resolution raised by Brazil last week.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Tuesday told the agency that “humanitarian pauses must be considered” to allow aid to reach civilians in Gaza, though he notably avoided the phrase “ceasefire.”[...]

The World Health Organization meanwhile reiterated calls on Tuesday for a ceasefire, saying it is “unable to distribute fuel and essential, life-saving health supplies to major hospitals in northern Gaza due to lack of security guarantees.” Six hospitals in Gaza have been forced to shut due to a lack of fuel, WHO added.

As someone who has escaped the US, I have to beg people to stop fucking around with "If Trump wins I am leaving." This is the most ignorant of stances. You are the frog thinking they can wait until the pot "really starts to boil" to get out. It has taken many international flights, a pile of money, and almost a full year of work to make our escape from the US happen. If shit gets really bad, you aren't getting out. Do you really think Canada is just going to open its doors and let 15 million US refugees drive through its border? You better get all your documents sorted with apostille. Don't know what that is? Fucking figure it out because you need it. Get your FBI background check started NOW it takes months. What's going to happen when they get 10 times the volume of requests? Get your job offer, the family member who can apply for reunification, or a large amount of liquid cash sorted that you will need for your application. Figure out what country you are going to and start making a plan. Did you know to apply for a long-term stay visa for most countries you have to apply from inside the US and wait there to receive it? And you have to apply in person at the embassy or consulate. It takes weeks to months. It takes ages to move to another country even if you bring nothing but a suitcase and your paperwork. It takes a day for Trump to shut the door and make it so you can't leave. Why do you think so many Jews never made it out of Germany? Either they could not leave because they did not have the means to or they waited too long and the trap was shut. I am so incredibly sorry for my fellow Americans who can't leave. I know all the arguments that someone has to stay and fight. I deeply applaud those who can do that. I can't do that. This message is for the people naively thinking that if Trump wins again they can just leave. I only have an 18 percent chance of getting into a PhD program, according to the actual funding website. And I lose my health insurance on my birthday this month so I need to get a job or unemployment benefits. I have a linguistics degree and a translation degree, which I expect to graduate from with a 1st.

I applied as an in-house translator, freelance translator, subtitler (my actual specialisation), localisation tester, localisation editor, localisation specialist, linguist, post-editor (which doesn't pay), project manager (something I'm bad at but is urgently needed). I applied to the EU and WIPO. I applied for junior/entry level and expert jobs.

I then branched out to research assistant, science communication, copywriting, copyediting, international guest relation and tourism, airport jobs (where I'm not allowed to work because I'm too fat according to their application website), language tutoring and publishing.

Now I'm applying to be a secretary, call center agent, receptionist, bookie, croupier, cashier, video editor, data typist, case worker for immigration, and person standing outside trying to get people to sign human rights petitions. A lot of jobs I applied for require standing for long periods of time or heavy lifting which I can't do because of my joints but I'd have to accept anyway.

I have lost count of how many jobs I applied for this year but it was 40 just in the last two days alone. I applied for jobs all over the country, then in the entire EU, then in other countries I think I could potentially get a visa for. Jobs I'm qualified for, overqualified for, underqualified for.

I landed exactly 1 interview this year and it was unsuccessful. From the other companies I either got rejections or never heard back from at all.

With the expansion of remote jobs, will there be any reason at all for studios to reallocate employees in the future?

There are (and always will be) some fully-remote studios that manage to make things work, but I don't really think it will become the norm across the industry. There's a lot to be said for in-person collaboration and the spontaneous iterative process that's much more difficult to happen in a digital-only environment.

There's also been some significant recent internal pushback against further full-time remote hiring at many studios I know of, including my own. There's been a lot of tech industry layoffs lately, which gives the management more leverage to require certain behaviors from the workers such as "return to office" and such. I know that my own studio has instituted two recent policies - a hiring freeze and a hard cap on the percentage of workers that may be full-time remote. Fully-remote devs like me get grandfathered in because the fully-remote status was already written into my contract when I signed, but most new hires won't get that same luxury.

If I had to predict the future, my guess would be that full time remote positions will be uncommon but not unheard of in the future. They will be more common than they were pre-pandemic, but I suspect fully remote positions will be more like H1B visa applications - typically reserved for senior roles that are more difficult to hire instead of a common status for a majority of the team.
