she didn’t understand it at first.
she sat beside her mother, occasionally nibbling on the biscuit as she listened tentatively to her mother talking to this lady in beautiful, embroidered yukata. she didn’t understand why she wasn’t allowed to go out to play, she had seen a kid running around earlier. surely, it is much fun to play outside than staying her.
she knew the beautiful lady; she is her mother’s massage client. she had been accompanying her mother since she could start walking and this lady has been a regular. she felt her mother’s hand rested on top of her head, gently caressing her head.
“oh, i didn’t know your toge is as same age as my daughter.”
the beautiful lady looked down at her with a smile, “yes, toge is turning 10 years old today. it’s a shame for our maid however.”
she watched as her mother frowned, throwing a sympathetic look at the lady, “his cursed speech is still out of control?” the lady sighed and nodded, bringing her cup up to her lips. “the maid fractured her bones, we had to sent her back home. that’s our third maid this month.” she heard a ruckus behind and slowly turned to meet a pair of violet eyes peeping from the opened door.
she felt her face getting red when the boy peeped through, waving his hand at her. she smiled and broke a part of her biscuit, holding it out to him.
“toge! what are you doing hiding behind there?”
the lady exclaimed and out of shock she dropped his portion on the floor. the boy shrieked and ran, leaving the ladies with the heavy pitter patter of his feet on the floor. her mother scolded her for the mess which she apologized profusely to her mother and the lady. “i didn’t mean to make a mess,” she helped her mother cleaned up the mess, obviously as said by the lady, the house doesn’t have any maid anymore.
“i’m sorry if toge scared you, y/n. he can’t speak or something bad will happen. we are trying to get it under control. i hope you’ll stay away from him, i don’t want anything to happen to you alright?” the lady caressed her cheeks before excusing himself, escorting her mother to the kitchen with the empty cups. she was still curious of the boy with the violet eyes and the fact that he has the marking on his face. glancing around, she filled her pocket with some of the biscuits and quickly ran out of the door into the hallway. she followed the hall until she reached the end, where there's an open door that leads to the garden. she put on a slipper and headed out.
the boy from earlier was kneeling by the pond with a stick in his hand poking something in the water.
he noticed her immediately and she caught a look of concern on his face. “are you toge?” she asked, stepping closer to the boy. he was glued to the spot, his lips pressed thin. she immediately took a spot next to him, with a smile, she showed him her pocket.
“i got you some biscuits, want to share?” she offered and to her joy, he nodded.
they watched at the water calmed down, reflecting the surrounding on the surface and their faces. when she smiled, he hesitated, terrified to be scolded again, terrified that he might cursed the only person who dared to speak to him. “since you can’t speak, do you know sign language?” she asked, tossing some of the crumbs into the pond. she watched as the boy nibbled on the biscuit before shaking his head, his long blonde hair tossed around with every shake.
so, she taught him.
“i don’t know a lot actually, but i went to school and we have a teacher who’s mute and she taught me how to say yes and no,” she explained, helping toge with his fingers. holding out his index and middle finger, she motioned him to tap the thumb while shaking her head. when he followed her, she was beaming happily, “that’s how you say no. good job! okay, now, this is how you say yes.” she held her hand up in a fist, holding it at about her shoulder height and motioned it up and down while nodding.
all this while the two mothers stood from far, watching the wholesome scene unfolding with laughing and gesturing and to lady inumaki’s surprise, her son was laughing.
“i hope my daughter isn’t being bothersome to you and your son, my lady,” her mother apologized.
“i haven’t seen him laugh in a while,” lady inumaki confessed to the mother, “he’s always afraid of being close to someone. we can’t even bring him to therapist to deal with the stress, he can’t talk.” lady inumaki laughed nervously. she could see the stress on the lady’s face, and she understood her, from a worried mother to another.
“i can always bring her by if that would’ve help you, my lady.”
“please, thank you. i’ll include this in the payment for the weekly massages too,” lady inumaki bowed in grateful. the mother looked embarrassed, shaking her head, “it’s okay, my lady. you only pay me for my service. my daughter is not apart of it. she just likes having a friend around.”
she did, she enjoyed being the only friend that toge can leaned on to.

“you got your cough spray?”
his fist moved up and down, she couldn’t see it but behind the high collar, she knew he was smiling. checking his pocket, he pulled out the said item, shaking the full bottle, “shake,” he said, reaching for her hand, rubbing it gently.
“don’t push yourself to hard,” she reminded sternly, watching as his hand slithered down. their palm touched and toge slipped his fingers between the gap between her own. she could see the smile in his eyes as he laughed, pinching her cheek. she never failed to get nervous when he touched her, even after knowing each other for many years, even after they started dating, she still gets butterflies for him.
she remembered when exactly that she realised that she’s totally in love with him.
the same spot in the garden where he surprised her by signing to her. he didn’t cover the lower part of his face; she could see the snake and fang marking on his face and he looked handsome today. she was distracted by that until she realised his hands were moving. “hello, you’re early!” he signed.
she gasped, dropping her bag on the ground before sitting beside him cross legged. “you learned sign language? when? why didn’t you tell me, i could’ve help you?” he nodded, pointing to a book on his lap. introduction to sign language. flipping through the books, she noticed the folded edges, his notes and scribbles, the book looked worn out. he must’ve been taking the class for a long time.
“just few months. i caught up fast. i learnt it so we can talk.”
she huffed, “you don’t have too. i can still understand our conversation.”
“i don’t want to talk ingredients with you,” he signed, a small teasing smile appear on his face, “how can i tell you that i like you with rice ball ingredient?”
she scoffed, “you’re joking.” she watched as the blonde man shook his head. opening the book, he pulled a yellow sticky note off the front page and placed it in her hand. it looked old and smudged but she could make out the date. it was dated few months ago, just as he said when he started taking the class. behind the sticky note was a picture of her. she could feel her face warming up and she looked up, unable to string any words into a sentence.
“they asked everyone what is the motivation that made us take the classes. i told them that there’s a girl i want to be able to say that i like her.” he pointed to the picture, “that’s the girl i’m in love with.”
she could feel tears pooling on the corner of her eyes. she laughed, glancing away to secretly wipe her tears away, “you’re lying. don’t you dare lie to me”
“i don’t,” he signed, crossing both of his hands together. “okaka,” he negated using their made-up language. she let out of snort, wiping her tears away with the back of her hand.
“well, i like you too, toge.”
a gentle squeeze of her hand brought her back to the future. “takana?” he asked, worry look etched on his face as he closed their distance. “i was just thinking of when you first tell me that you like me. it’s been a while, isn’t it?” she noticed his agitation, he kept glancing backward and her face scrunched in question. turning around, she noticed noritoshi and mai walking towards them. squeezing his hand, he let go of the hold on her hand heavily, she smiled and told him that she’ll be back in a minute.
“y/n,” noritoshi called, “they are calling for a meeting soon.”
“yeah, stop fraternising with the enemy,” mai chimed in.
she gave a dismissive wave of her hand with a cheerful smile, “i’ll be there soon. i’m just wrapping up some things,” she bowed her head slightly and her eyes followed as they walked back from they came from, disappearing through the woods. she felt a hand on her shoulder, turning around to see toge standing behind her.
“do they know we are engaged?”
she rested her weight on one of her legs, crossing her arms across her chest, huffing, “they don’t even know we are dating. okay, maybe they suspected something. you don’t exactly go to home one semester break, got engaged and come back to school and expect me to share that with them.” the blonde chuckled, shrugging his shoulder.
“do you tell your friends?”
“they know we are dating. i haven’t tell them about our engagement yet.”
“i want to keep you to myself for a while, can i?” she asked.
he could see the sparkles in her eyes, as she batted her eyes with a small pout. his finger traced her jaw, hooking onto her chin, tilted her head up slightly. unzipping his collar, she couldn’t help her giddiness as he pressed his lips against hers. something about being able to see him whole, as him, not as the cursed speech user is something she cherished the most. fluttering her eyes opened, they met his beautiful eyes. his lips moved, silently mouthed an okay to her. she nodded, helping him zipped up the collar in place. satisfied that it’s in place, he caressed her cheeks to thank her before excusing himself.
“see you later!”
she waved and he watched as the giddy girl skipped her way out of the wood the same way the rest of them came from earlier. he jammed his hands in his pocket and turned around walking the opposite way of her, thanking god he could hide his blushing face under the high collar.
