Battibecco – 4:01
Con tutto l'amore che posso – 3:34
Che begli amici!... – 4:20
Mia libertà – 3:51
La prima volta – 5:14
Quel giorno – 3:22
Io ti prendo come mia sposa – 1:48
Cartolina rosa – 3:10
Questo piccolo grande amore – 5:38
Porta Portese – 5:13
Quanto ti voglio – 3:10
COME FITTA?
Sul serio, raga, qualcuno mi spiega? Per favore, vorrei una spiegazione sensata, non "il produttore gli ha imposto la canzone perché doveva pagarsi la terza Ferrari", grazie.

Hey everyone! Here is my submission for the Dan and Phil Phasquerade Tumblr Event! First off, as a surprise, I made not one, but TWO songs for the event!
youtube
The first one is the main theme song for the event as requested by @wdapteo! 生き甲斐 (Ikigai)! It’s not fully orchestral but I put a bit of strings and horns in there, so I guess it counts lol! I decided to go with a theme that was mainly based around guitars and synths. I also put in a few Asian instruments such as the koto to represent their trips to Japan. The title “Ikigai” is a Japanese concept that refers to one’s sense of purpose or reason to live and is a combination of the words “iki”(to live) and “gai” (reason). This concept can include people such as friends, families, and partners, as well as activities such as one’s hobby or pastime. It basically means that one can find joy in their life by being aligned with their purpose. I thought this concept would be perfect for the phasquerade because Dan and Phil’s ikigai or reason to live is each other. 🥰
As for the background image, I found a picture on Adobe Stock Photos of two masquerade masks that looked PERFECT for Dan and Phil. (The black one is Dan’s and the white one is Phil’s, obviously, lol 😂) Phanartists, feel free to use those masks in ur art! 👌🏻
The second song I made is an orchestral ballroom version of JVKE’s Golden Hour! It took me around two days to do, along with constant listening to the song to get the chords right and then add my own bits on top of it 😂 I’m really proud of this version because lemme tell ya, making orchestral music on Garageband IOS is harder than it looks 😭😅 I still can’t believe how far I’ve gone with making music on this app bc I started using it in 2018 and back then, I had a hard time navigating everything but I slowly worked my way up to where I am now, and tbh I still have far more to go! The background image I used for this is another stock image I found on Pexels that fit the vibe of the song! (Also the two men in the picture looked like Dan and Phil haha 😂)
Anyways, here's a little introduction of me: I’m Kristy, aka @nothoughtsonlytrance. My pronouns are she/they and I am pansexual! (Fun fact, I found out I was pan around the same time that Dan and Phil came out in 2019 lol) I’ve been watching Dan and Phil since around 2012/2013 (so when I was around 12 or 13 years old) because that was the time when I really started watching YouTube and eventually found their channels. I vividly remember watching the Photobooth Challenge video and crying with laughter because it was so hilarious. I continued to look forward to seeing their videos after school and finally got to see them on stage in 2018 for their Interactive Introverts tour when they came to Richmond, VA. (didn’t get VIP tickets for the meet and greet tho so I still have yet to meet them in person 😭🤞) It continues to be one of my favorite memories of them and I remember crying when seeing them on stage. Their videos mean so much to me and I even made my quote for my college graduation cap “Embrace the void and have the courage to exist” because their videos got me through the last two semesters of college!😎👌🏻(Which got noticed by Dan and Phil in their Phan Twitter Memes 2 video!) Words cannot express how proud I am of them, especially after their coming out videos and how they feel more free to be themselves! And I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for them! (And also us haha)
I think the song that will be playing when I take the stage is “Once Upon a December” from the musical Anastasia! It is one of my favorite musicals and I even got to see it in NYC with my family a few years back! Also, as someone who was adopted from Russia, this song really speaks to me personally. I don’t speak Russian fluently, only a few basic words and phrases that my parents taught me that they learned when they were adopting me, (I only speak English) but I’ve been trying to learn the lyrics to the Russian version of the song so I can sing along with it too. (Pronouncing Russian isn’t easy haha)
Anyways, here’s my post for the phasquerade! Hope you all enjoy the music! I had so much fun being a part of this and thank you so much to @serendipnpipity for planning and organizing this!

Blog Post #3 Week 4 due 2/13/25
How does the advancement of technology and algorithms reinforce social bias in society rather than overcoming the problem?
The advancement of technology reinforces racial bias by targeting certain demographics through coding and algorithms. These algorithms are used by companies throughout the work force to evaluate candidates and plenty of times have racial bias embedded into the coding. As mentioned by Ruha Benjamin in “Race after Technology” rather than “challenging or overcoming the cycles of inequity, technical fixes too often reinforce and even deepen the status quo” this is due to the fact that oftentimes these codes discriminate based on names or race. These algorithms are impacting the livelihood of these minorities by barring them from job opportunities and career advancement. As Benjamin also mentions a “classic study of how names impact people's experience on the job market, researchers show that, all other things being equal, job seekers with White-sounding first names received 50 percent more callbacks from employers than job seekers with Black-sounding names” demonstrating how algorithms can affects a person's ability to get a job solely based on their names. Rather than each job seeker being individually evaluated, some never even have the opportunity to present themselves because the algorithm flagged their name on the application. Society likes to think technology would have solved these racial bias problems but in actuality it is only reinforcing them by targeting certain demographics.
What is the concept of redlining in relation to technology and algorithms ? How are certain groups oppressed by this?
Redlining is a discriminatory practice in which financial services are predetermined to neighborhoods based on their race and ethnicity and has been illegal since 1968. In relation to technology and algorithms, redlining is the use of technology in order to be biased against people based on race or ethnicity. This could be through internet speeds, algorithms, or broadband infrastructure. Certain groups can be marginalized and oppressed due to this as they may not have access to the internet, high internet speeds, or the coding could contain its creator's own racist ideology. Minorities and women are most likely to suffer as Sofia Noble mentions in her article “Algorithms of Oppression” the everyday racism and “commentary on the web is an abhorrent thing in itself, which has been detailed by others; but it is entirely different with the corporate platform vis-à-vis an algorithmically crafted web search that offers up racism and sexism as the first results” as when searching for certain topics the first results yielded sexually implicit websites specifically regarding women. The concept of redlining further marginalized minority groups and oppressed by proposing these searches as the most relatable result. This goes even further as women are more likely to be targeted and those who created the algorithm are going without repercussions. As technology grows and is more involved in our lives it is important to learn and combat these concepts so that groups and minorities are not targeted and oppressed .
What is the digital divide? How does digital literacy play a role in the digital divide ?
The digital divide is explained as the divide between those who have access to internet and technology and those who do not. Digital literacy plays a role in the divide as even though many groups could possibly have access to the same technology, one group may understand it and be able to use it more efficiently. Digital literacy is an individuals ability to find, evaluate, and communicate using technologies. For example, two people may both have an iphone but if one has better digital literacy they will know how to update ios, use siri, and facetime, while the other may only know how to call. Digital literacy plays a role in bringing groups together for a cause and is vital in creating spaces for voices to be heard. As Anna Everette mentions in her article “The Revolution Will Be Digitized” with the growing “power and dominance of global media conglomerates, it is evident that the revolutionary digital public sphere developing in cyberspace represents the hope and promise for the ongoing survival of the independent black presses, established ones and upstarts alike.” As the creation of these spaces allows for independent presses to remain vocal about ongoing issues and for communities to remain hopeful that their voices and opinions will be heard.

SUV (Yes that is what I'm calling it)
Hello everyone and thank all 28 (woah) for voting in my first poll! Now this doesn't mean all of my au's are out of the picture but y'all asked and y'all will receive. So context I made this AU when I was very little I just happened to get into Steven Universe and Voltron at the same time. SVTFOE was also supposed to be here but I couldn't find a way to make it fit and make sense in the grand story.
But let's into it starting with headcannons, or canons since I'm the creator? Idk what to call them
Aqua
•Daughter of Lance and Lapis she is kinda the group leader. Born on March 5, 2125 (Pisces) in Beach City, Delaware. She actually got the hang of her powers pretty young compared to her friends and luckily for her the city actually became a city, now being the gem human capital of the world. She went to school at little homeschool and became a volunteer for the place. Since her parents were still close there kids became friends, a little more then friends actually.
•Aqua and Jay have only been dating for a few months now, in my mind it's around maybe 6-8 but the two deeply care about each other. Sometimes on dates Aqua will let him ride on her back and they just fly around the city with no cares in the world, even exploring the ocean. The two have even fused into Iolite on occasions, or as they like to call them, Io.
•But the girl has secrets, secrets she doesn't want even her closest friends to know. SHE'S A FANFIC WRITER. Her favorite show is called Moon Mist and it's about intergalactic medieval space fighters who go on daring quests and wonderful adventures. She thinks it's embarrassing though, even her friends make fun of her cause they kinda think the show is dumb.
•The girl's hair is genetic, along with all of her friends. Hair like that has become a lot more common since gem and human relations have gotten better.
•Even seeing a fish dead or in food can make the girl shed a tear she hates it, flying around the ocean, picking up trash, it makes her dad proud.
•Just like her mother, she has dabbled in the art of watercolor and other medians of paint. A little fun though she can never seem to get it right, even with her practice it's hard.
•Like the rest of her friends though, they miss their moms. Aqua misses hers the most, with all the other lazuli's flying around and teaching her how to use her powers, she can't help but still long for that tear drop hole in her heart.
Jay
•Kid of Hunk and Amethyst and heir to the Garrett cooking empire he is the the kid under, what he feels is crazy pressure. Born on April 28, 2124 (Taurus) in New Orleans, Louisiana he's the oldest out of the kids. Unlike the other kids his dad left Earth only a few months after he was born. With the growing empire of his dad's restaurant caused the two to move around a lot, never staying in one place for more then a few months. He hates it though. Every month is a new place farther and farther away from his friends, and lover.
•As his mother and father always say, the key to love is through a persons stomach, and he lives by that. It's how he shows his love to all his friends and family, especially with Aqua. He's always there when she needs a pick me up with her favorite homemade ice cream, or just on the fly with her burger.
•Being a shapeshifter Jay had always struggled with his identity, till when he was 13 he finally realized he was xenogender. Not being tied to any real gender or any concept of it. Then again his friends don't care about whatever he identifies as or choses to be, as long as he's Jay, him and them are happy.
•Hunk never once put pressure on his kid. He was always scared that he'd be like him when he was a teen, scared of everything and not wiling to be adventurous. But Hunk never had to do that oh no, oh no, Jay did that to himself. He feels like his has to continue his fathers legacy in some way to make him proud, even though the guy couldn't be prouder
•He tries to visit his friends as much as possibly, even if they are miles and miles away
•He's always trying new combos of food and making his friends taste them. Mostly there good, sometimes there amazing, but on the rare expected times he makes something bad, it's bad. Like, that one time he gave everyone food poisoning for a week straight.
Rose
•Child of Shiro and Pink Pearl she's a flip flop of characters. She's smart but stupid, naive and paranoid, no one can get a real good read on her. When she born Shiro and his husband had been wanting a kid and well, him and pink pearl had become really good friends so she decided to sacrifice herself to give her friend what he wanted. And before you know it with a little science, Rose popped out on November 31, 2135 in New York, New York.
•When she was about 3 her family moved to LA for Shiro's job which lead to Rose being around all the finder things in life. She wasn't the top 1% her family was just, rich, a Glinda type.
•As a kid her house was always the house the group would want to hang out with since it had all the hottest games and toys and everything a kid could want. But now it's just one of the many places they go to hang out.
•Even with her high statis in life, she always wished she's could be a run of the mill kid. No famous parent, no riches, wished she could go back into the past and when she found out about the 2000s through 2090s? God she was amazed. Which led her to spiral more, into the 1990s, 80s, 70s, 60s, 50s, times gone by. But she knows that's never gonna be her life.
•Like I mentioned, Rose makes bracelets for her friends, but her favorite is the one she made for Elliot. She doesn't fully know why but he's always been special to her
Elliot
•Speaking of which it's the man of the hour! Elliot was born April 3rd, 2124 (Aries) in the desserts of New Mexico along with his sister. After years Ruby and Sapphire wanted kids so Keith helped them out which lead them to give up there forms to make them.
•Elliot got Ruby's side which lead to anger, lots of angry mumbling, and only being able to focus on one thing at a time. The guy was never the best in school being known as the joker and pranker which got him in trouble with his dad. Along with Ruby's anger he got her powers and weapon
•Even with his troubles, the guy is surprisingly smart with fire. Since it can't effect him like a normal person he's always trying to find something to make his powers stronger, better, it's why he carries around a pair of goggles, it blows up in his face!
•He'd never admit this to anyone, but he has a minor crush on Rose. He thinks she so sweet and pretty and caring, and he couldn't help but smile more then he did anytime of his life when she gave him that bracelet. He's always careful with it, a bit paranoid about losing or blowing it up lmao
•He looks up to his Galura grandmother and wishes to be like her. We’ll more like have the markings of a Galura.
Frost
• Born April 3rd, 2134 Frost is the opposite of her brother. Even though the two are known to get into mischief once in a while her grades are out of this world, has really good control of her powers, yet not as popular as her more extroverted brother, but she doesn’t care.
• The girl got the powers of ice and future vision, only the future vision kinda stinks. It’s always a blur whenever they try to use it
•Is like Keith at the start of Voltron, she even takes her outfit from what he looked like as a teenager just changed the color to blue
•Was apart of some sports teams, but it never worked out for her
•Want to be just like her dad and be a pilot, even though Keith is scared it would be to dangerous from her even if he does encourage it
•Has a few other friends outside the friend group from clubs and volunteering
•Dances her sadness out when something bad happens. Just goes to the bathroom and busts it down lmao
Alexis
•Born February 5th, 2135 at 2:00am on a Saturday in New Mexico, with the two biggest brains on the team, they’re a super genius. They were made in a tube and laid dormant for almost nine months, but they came out pre-mature
•Alexis took a few years to warm up to the rest of the group, it was till 7 she begun to talk but used a tablet to speech to her mother. She never exactly liked the group at first, she could never understand how they worked, or any humans work really
• She despises the feeling of dirt and grime on her skin, it why unlike her mothers she hate gardening and going outside with a passion. It’s why they’re so pale.
•Has metal powers which are useful since also like their mothers, they love and adore tech and think it's better then any magical power out there
•Avid gamer that has one of those 'I paused my game to be here' shirts they were around the Garrison, it's where here and the twins go to school
•Buts heads with Frost a lot since the two are both the smartest kids there. But they do study together and for Alexis Frost is the only other person aside from their mother who they can have intelligent conversation with
•Yet that doesn't make them immune to drama. TV DRAMA THAT IS, Alexis is crazy about camp pining hearts were talking watching every episode, movie, cast interviews. Reading every book, script, even creating a whole video essay spanning 10 hours explaining every episode and plot point in the show in so much detail it could make your head spin
•For some reason dogs have always been special to them
That's it! If y'all want more just tell me cause I got a lot more

Hi Io! I was looking at your Tumblr and saw this post:
https://iowriteswords.tumblr.com/post/758746805347532800/fanfic-author-ask-meme
I wanted to ask you some of the questions! Actually all of the questions if you have time, but if you don't, I'm most interested in your answers to 3, 5, 7, 11, 12, 14, 17, 18, 31, 34, 36, and 38 (you can answer any or all of them).
Alternatively, you could just answer the questions you most want to answer. XD
Got this ask by email! Answered all of them, because I was bored last night, and I think I bolded all the questions you mentioned specifically.
Thank you for asking!
1. What was your first fic and could you stand to reread it today?
My first was Homecoming, and I’m still pretty happy with it. I reread it fairly recently when someone left a specific comment, and I had to go back and see what they were talking about. It was my first fanfic, but I’d already been writing for several years and had gotten a degree in literature and writing, so it certainly wasn’t any kind of early writing project. I’ve improved since then, but I already had a decent grasp on what I was doing.
2. What’s your most recent fic and how far do you think you’ve come?
I have one called Voice that I’ll be publishing on November 19. I don’t know that this is the best demonstration of how far I’ve come; it’s a short piece that doesn’t necessarily show off a lot of my strengths. But I do think I’ve come pretty far. I have a better understanding of my characters, I’m better at writing more complex characters, I can juggle a large cast better.
3. In your opinion, what’s your best fic?
Probably Robins and Other Flightless Birds.
4. In your opinion and without looking at any numbers, what’s your most popular fic?
Definitely Robins and Other Flightless Birds.
5. Is there any fic that makes you super happy to reread and remember you wrote that?
The Most Important Thing. I just like it.
6. Is there any fic that makes you super embarrassed to reread and remember you wrote that?
Nope. Occasionally I’ll read back, like, a certain line or scene and be embarrassed, but not a full work.
7. What’s the fic you most want to continue (unfinished or no)?
Right now what I really want to do is the sequel to Who Shall Make the Clown Laugh? I mean, excluding my current project; it doesn’t seem right to talk about plans to continue when I’m, like, actively working on it. (15 chapters written, 0 posted.)
8. What’s the oldest (longest since last update) fic you most want to continue (unfinished or no)?
I guess the Flightless Birds series? I mean, it hasn’t been long at all yet, but I know it will be a while, and I don’t really have very many other things I’m planning to go back to? It has been way longer since I worked on Ozma, but idk if I’ll even post the next bit on ao3; it’s in the public domain, so eventually I’m going to heavily edit and what I have posted now will be the first 2 chapters in a book.
9. Have you ever written for a fandom without watching/reading/playing the source material?
No, though I’ve definitely read a lot more of the source material since I started. There is just so much Batman to read and watch.
10. Have you ever written for a fandom without reading other fanfic for it?
Nope.
11. Have you ever written a fic for a concept you know someone else has done before? How did it impact your writing process or feelings after posting?
Not really, although someone else did start posting a Tim and Jason in Arkham fic after I started mine but before I started posting it. I just avoided reading it so I wouldn’t be influenced, although I do intend to read it now, if it ever finishes.
12. Have you ever written a fic and decided never to publish it? Why?
Not a complete fic. Before I started Batman I tried both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but only got a couple hundred words into each.
13. What’s the biggest change between your style when you started in fandom and today?
I don’t think my style has changed much. I’ve matured and become a better writer, but I think the core of what I do and how is basically the same.
14. What’s the biggest change in your taste between when you started in fandom and today?
I don’t think it’s really changed very much. I’m more inclined toward Redemption for Everyone, probably, and much more reluctantly to let anyone die. I have less tolerance for anything tragic or unhappy. I read a wider range of things, in terms of both fandom and subject matter.
15. Have you ever purposefully written one fandom/fic idea over another because you knew it’d be more popular?
I’ve only ever posted fic for Batman and Oz, and I definitely prioritize Batman because people actually read it.
16. Have you ever stopped writing a fic/for a fandom because it wasn’t receiving enough attention?
I will eventually finish my Oz stories, hopefully soon, but for now, yeah.
17. In your opinion, what’s your most overrated fic?
I don’t want to say any of them are overrated? Like, I do not want people to like any of them any less. I’m always surprised by how much people like them, but also I don’t want to be like, no, that one’s not as good as they think it is - I worked really hard on all of them.
18. What’s your most underrated fic?
The Oz ones. For Batman, probably Maybe Someday We’ll Laugh again? It has the fewest views out of the ones that weren’t posted pretty recently.
19. If you had to pick one fic/scene/chapter of your work to describe your entire portfolio to a stranger, which would you pick?
Fic, scene, and chapter are, like, wildly different options to choose from. I generally point people toward The Most Important Thing, as a good representation of my work that isn’t a major time commitment. For one scene I’d say the one in Robins and Other Flightless Birds where Bruce and Kate are talking about the kids on patrol, which contains one of my favorite lines I’ve written: “Mine is a pity bat theme, so you don’t have to be a dork on the streets of Gotham alone.” I think it’s a good summary of the kind of Batman I like to write. I do not remember individual chapters clearly enough to answer for that.
20. Have/Would you ever rewrite a fic? If yes, would you take the original down?
I’ll rewrite the Ozma ones as I turn them into the start of a book. Otherwise no. And I don’t plan to take them down.
21. If someone starts kudosing and commenting your fics in a spree and has a few works of their own, would you go look through theirs?
Yes, I’ve done that several times.
22. Has there ever been anyone who’s made you freak out because they read your work and followed/favorited/reviewed?
I remember on my first or second fic someone whose work I’d read a lot of commented, and that was exciting. But I don’t remember who it was - that was like 6 years ago.
23. What’s the nicest review you’ve ever gotten?
Most of them are so nice. Like, I don’t know how to single out one review. Raberba girl leaves a long, amazing comment on every chapter of everything. I got a review I loved on We’re All Mad Here that I didn’t answer for like a year and felt horribly guilty about; I think the commenter was seaofserendipity.
24. What’s the meanest review you’ve ever gotten? Do you think the reviewer intended it?
I don’t know. I try not to think about them. Something from Rewind, Reset, I’m sure.
25. What constructive criticism, however well-meaning, always makes you feel bad when you see it in a review?
I can’t think of any, like, genuinely constructive criticism that I’ve felt bad about.
26. What aspect of your writing do you most enjoy to see praised?
I’m not sure. Maybe when people think it’s funny? Or maybe when they like how I handle complex issues around mental illness and trauma. Which are two very different aspects.
27. If you could only ever write crossovers or single-fandom fics ever again, which would you pick?
Single fandom.
28. if you could only ever write for a single crossover or a single fandom again, which would you pick?
Batman.
29. Does the division of your writing across fandoms line up with your reading? What’s the biggest discrepancy?
No. I really only write Batman. I read Batman, other DC, Buffy, Veronica Mars, and Star Wars pretty often, and Marvel, Harry Potter, and Supernatural if I’m in the right mood. I love Oz fic, but don’t read a lot of it because there’s not a lot currently being written.
30. Do you continue to write for a fandom after you’ve moved on or do you focus solely on the new one?
Not really applicable to me with my single fandom writing.
31. Who’s the one character you’ve just never managed to get perfectly right?
Idk. I don’t know if I’ve ever gotten anyone completely perfectly right. I definitely struggle with Damian. Yeah, my answer’s gonna be Damian. I have gotten around the difficulty of writing him by making him younger twice (and have a 3rd story planned where I’m also doing that), and since he’s younger/newer to the family/newer to existence as a character, he often just doesn’t show up at all because I’m starting from a pre-Damian point in the timeline.
32. Who’s the one character who shines without you even trying?
Probably Tim. I have a Tim thing.
33. Is there any particular character whose scenes always wind up being longer/more frequent than you expected? Does the quality hold up?
Tim. Always Tim, in every fic. And I think so, for the most part.
34. Was there any fic that you wrote that really surprised you in the fandom reaction? Was it just by the numbers or did they take it an entirely different way?
How upset people got about Rewind, Reset, definitely.
35. Have you ever written a ship into a fic without meaning to?
I almost never mean to. It just happens. When I wrote my 2nd novel, the first scene I wrote was one from the middle of the book where they had a conversation about how Definitely There Is No Romance Here, specifically so that the platonic were locked in and it couldn’t happen to them.
36. Have you ever sincerely written a ship you do not support into a fic?
Nope. My fics aren’t, like, super ship heavy, and I don’t have really strong feelings about any Batman related ships. I just go with whatever feels right for the story.
37. Have you ever purposefully bashed a character/ship in a fic?
I don’t think so? I definitely portrayed some characters as worse people in earlier stories than later ones, like Harley and Talia, but that wasn’t, like, bashing - I just hadn’t read as much about them yet and didn’t have a very nuanced understanding of their characters.
38. Have you ever purposefully written something you know your readers would find uncomfortable/would not enjoy? If yes, why?
The scene where Bruce shoots Black Mask in Rewind, Reset, and the scene where Barbara lets aliens get tortured in Pinioned. Although no one was really unhappy with the alien situation like I worried they would be. They just felt like the right moves for the story.
39. Do you consider yourself to have a readership?
Yes. I have a good sized group of people who read all the bat-fic I write.
40. Do you feel like you put out enough content?
Yes.
41. If you cross-post your fics on multiple sites, do you have a favorite? Are there certain fics you would only post on certain site?
I only post on ao3, except occasionally snippets on tumblr.
42. How many views has your most popular fic gotten?
250,247 (Robins and Other Flightless Birds)
43. Your least popular?
680 (Ozma: Part II)
44. Do you follow/favorite/kudos/comment/review more stories than you have received?
I don’t comment as much as I should. I kudos everything I read. Sometimes even if I don’t finish reading it. I don’t really keep track of numbers.
45. If you had to call yourself an author of a single genre (besides fanfic) what label would you give yourself?
Outside of fanfic, I’m definitely a fantasy author. But in terms of, like, what genre my fanfic falls in besides just fanfic - idk. Is Trauma Recovery a genre?
46. Do you consider yourself a diverse author?
Does this mean do I have a diverse range of stories? If so, not really. I always write for the same fandom, I do the same things with characters again and again (JJ!Tim), and in non-fic work I almost exclusively retell fairy tales.
47. If someone you know in real life who isn’t involved in fandoms asked to read your work, would you let them? If yes, what would you recommend they read first?
Depends on the person, and probably The Most Important Thing. It’s short, it doesn’t get into complicated multiverse stuff, and I like it.
48. Does anyone you know from outside of fandom know you write fanfic? Are they involved in the same fandom too?
My parents know and a few friends, and none of them are particularly interested in Batman.
49. Has anyone in your life ever read your fanfic just because you wrote it?
I think my ex boyfriend started one, but he wasn’t a very fast reader and didn’t have much time, so I don’t think he ever finished. My former roommate read my first fic and part of my second before I posted it, mostly as sort of a critique partner.
50. Has writing fanfic had a significant impact on your life? Would you say it’s entirely positive?
Yes, and yes. I’ve gotten so much better at writing male characters, at writing large casts, at maintaining a schedule, at finishing projects. I’ve become a better and more confident writer. I’ve build up a small audience for my original work that I know came over from the fanfic.

FUTURE ULTIMATE PHONE PEOPLE THINK
Google pixel 9pro
The Google Pixel 9 Pro is the new kid on the block in this year's lineup. The Pixel 8 Pro was succeeded by the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL and the 9 Pro is a new addition to the portfolio - it is a compact, full-featured flagship with all of the bells and whistles of its bigger XL sibling
A compact Pixel is not a new concept in itself, of course, but this is the first time Google is bringing the entirety of its A-game to this form factor. The Pixel 9 Pro packs a 48MP, 5x optical periscope telephoto camera - the same as the Pixel 9 Pro XL. There is also UWB onboard the Pixel 9 Pro. Frankly, it's kind of amazing that Google managed to fit so much extra hardware inside what is essentially the same footprint as the non-Pro Pixel 9.
Google Pixel 9 Pro specs at a glance: Body: 152.8x72.0x8.5mm, 199g; Glass front (Gorilla Glass Victus 2), glass back (Gorilla Glass Victus 2), aluminum frame; IP68 dust/water resistant (up to 1.5m for 30 min). Display: 6.30" LTPO OLED, 120Hz, HDR10+, 2000 nits (HBM), 3000 nits (peak), 1280x2856px resolution, 20.08:9 aspect ratio, 495ppi; Always-on display. Chipset: Google Tensor G4 (4 nm): Octa-core (1x3.1 GHz Cortex-X4 & 3x2.6 GHz Cortex-A720 & 4x1.92 GHz Cortex-A520); Mali-G715 MC7. Battery: 4700mAh; 27W wired, PD3.0, PPS, 55% in 30 min (advertised), 21W wireless (w/ Pixel Stand), 12W wireless (w/ Qi-compatible charger), Reverse wireless. Connectivity: 5G; eSIM; Wi-Fi 7; BT 5.3, aptX HD; NFC. Misc: Fingerprint reader (under display, ultrasonic); stereo speakers; Ultra Wideband (UWB) support, Satellite SOS service, Circle to Search. Google also paid some extra attention to the display of the Pro. It is a bit bigger than the Pixel 8's and better than that inside the regular Pixel 9. The resolution has been upgraded to 1280 x 2856 pixels, the maximum brightness has been improved, and there is LTPO tech for dynamic refresh rate adjustment.

05 – Io Saturnalia
Preface
This chapter introduces Val’s family in the context of Saturnalia, a time of gathering, fun, and rejection of social norms (e.g., slave/master, men/women, adult/child dynamics). Valentinus comes from a peculiar family, whose background even he is not fully familiar with. During the party, his parents make an unexpected visit, catching the attention of Val’s guests– his mother and father carry themselves unconventionally, both in appearance and character, in contrast to the rest of the crowd. The magic system of Ex Roma also begins to formally reveal itself starting with this chapter, which borrows from concepts such as divination, charms, witchcraft, and theurgy and combines them with godlike abilities (e.g., shapeshifting).
After exchanging gifts, Val notes his father’s tolerance of and tendency to adopt foreign customs, particularly of Egyptian culture as suggested by his newly acquired wedjat amulet necklace. The integration and recognition of foreign cultures is notable in Roman culture– as the series continues, I seek to emphasize Val’s connection with foreign cultures in contrast with the homogeneity of “Roman-ness”. While Romans readily borrowed and honored Greek artistic and religious customs (e.g., architectural techniques, clothing, dining, gods), Egyptian culture, being more ancient and foreign from a Roman perspective, was not held to the same standards (largely socio-political reasons) but was more or less acknowledged. Val’s “peculiar” (family) dynamic and knowledge grows as he interacts with new cultures and time periods spanning across Asia and Africa, which eventually point him toward his family origins and the whereabouts of his sister, Lucia.
Saturnalia:
Saturnalia was a festival celebrated in mid-December from the 17th to 23rd (by the 1st century BCE) in honor of Saturn, the god of time and agriculture. This was a time of feasting, gift-giving, and the reversal of roles and social norms. People engaged in games and gambling and were open to free speech and mockery. Slaves were also treated as equals– Roman citizens wore the pilleus, a conical felt hat that traditionally marked the freedman status of manumitted slaves. The synthesis (1) (σῠ́νθεσῐς, “a putting together”)/cenatoria (2) (“dinner clothes/robes”) was a loose colorful garment worn by both men and women for dining or special occasions such as Saturnalia. The exact physical composition of syntheses is not clear but is suggested to be some sort of robe or informal tunic-and-toga-like combination.
(Note: everyone in this episode is wearing a tunic rather than a synthesis– I should have changed this earlier on in the drawing process but the lineart alone probably would not have brought the historical accuracy justice compared to if it were colored anyway).
(Cassius Dio on Nero’s dress, Roman History, LXII.13)
Examples of gifts: hats, balms, canes, cups, birds, cloaks, tablets, lyres, “Livy in a single volume” (in membranis), dwarf mules, dogs, sigillaria (Martial, Epigrams, Book 14).
Quotes on Saturnalia:
“Come on, then, use the freedom December allows, since our ancestors wished it: speak!” (Horace, Satires, 2.7)
“Among our ancestors the Saturnalia was confined to one day, the fourteenth before the Kalends of January, but after Gaius Caesar gave the month two more days, it began to be celebrated on the sixteenth day before the Kalends. [...] though note that even among the ancients there was the opinion that the Saturnalia spanned seven days” (Macrobius, Saturnalia, 1.10.2)
“On the Saturnalia [...] [Augustus] would now give gifts of clothing or gold and silver; again coins of every device, including old pieces of the kings and foreign money; another time nothing but hair cloth, sponges, pokers and tongs, and other such things under misleading names of double meaning.” (Suetonius, The Lives of the Caesars – Life of Augustus, 75)
Page-by-Page Notes

Val wears a pilleus and holds a terracotta modiolus (cup with a handle, wine not pictured).
Pilleus – a conical cap made of felt that originated in Ancient Greece. In Rome, pillei were worn by manumitted slaves. Romans of all social statuses donned pillei during Saturnalia, representing the reversal of roles.
Martial’s Epigrams (on Saturnalia)
“Now, while the knights and the lordly senators delight in the festive robe, and the cap of liberty is assumed by our Jupiter” (XIV.1)
“In these festive days of the scythe-bearing old man, when the dice-box rules supreme, you will permit me, I feel assured, cap-clad Rome, to sport in unlaboured verse. You smile: I may do so then, and am not forbidden. Depart, pale cares, far away from hence; let us say whatever comes uppermost without disagreeable reflection. Mix cup after cup, my attendants [...] I can do nothing without wine; but, while I am drinking, the power of fifteen poets will show itself in me” (XI.6)

Val’s biclinium got converted into a triclinium
The people in the bottom right panel are playing tali, a dice game.
Garlands/festoons (serta, -ae; f) were made using leaves (e.g., acanthus, laurel, bay), flowers, and fruits (e.g., apples, pomegranates, grapes).

Birds are related to omens, good and bad. The word “auspicious” comes from auspicium (“bird-watching”), which involves observing the movement and the type of bird to draw a favorable/unfavorable outcome.
Glass pitchers, various cups (Etruscan, British, Egyptian, Chinese, terra sigillata), and bottles
Pot with laurel, roses, chamomile

To clarify, the sparkles indicate whenever something magical happens. Valentinus’ parents (Vitalinus and Laura) naturally have magic (as suggested by Curio, who notes that they have a “charm” to them). Val’s magic works when he comes in physical contact with someone/thing whilst using speech.
Theurgy (θεουργία) – communication with spirits and deities, involves rituals of ascetic disciplines (prayers, dances, meditation, etc.) and/or external influences/tools (drugs, perfumes, light) to connect with higher powers
Goetia (γοητεία) – witchcraft, may involve the utilization of instruments such as wands, curse tablets (tabella defixionis, κατάδεσμος) or texts, and amulets.
Divination (divinatio, -is) – foresight
Laura (and Lucia’s) power.
Charms (physical, magical) (fascinum, -i)
Val and Vitalinus’ powers are based on blandimentum (flattery, allure, charm)
Magicians, religion, and healing (Pliny, Natural History, XXX)
Page 9
Val’s gifts were originally supposed to be wooden dolls, I felt that clay Sigillaria were more fitting given the holiday
The gifting of Sigillaria usually marks the end of Saturnalia, which Macrobius (Saturnalia, 1.10.24) notes extended the celebration to seven days (i.e., December 23rd).
Sigillarium (-a): a pottery or wax figurine often made in the likeness of a divinity, mythological/fantastical figure, or animal (or in this case, anything at all, really).
Page 10
Vitalinus’ sigillarium is holding a cabbage! Farming was an idealized occupation as its “simplicity” promoted a virtuous and stable way of life (hi, Cincinnatus and Cato the Elder). Cabbage was believed to have all-encompassing health benefits from promoting digestion to healing wounds (Cato, De Agricultura, 156-157).
Shocked marble statue gag
The parents canonically have even more statuettes and figurines lying around.
Lar (pl: lares): a protective household spirit/guardian deity believed to protect and watch over the space they were displayed in.

Page 13
Val wears a bulla (circular protective amulet worn by boys until they come of age)
Girl’s equivalent: lunula (moon/crescent shaped)
Page 15
Lucia takes the female form of Vitalinus’ praenomen (whereas Val takes his grandfather’s)
Women often took the female form of the gens nomen (like Sempronia). Both Val and Lucia’s cases are less common.
Page 16
“Parthian-style” chicken with stuffed dates and apricots, grapes
Greek lekythos (λήκυθος) (olive oil container)
Bird-head pitcher (without a design on the belly)
Other examples: (1) (2)
Page 17
Egyptians legally did not have equal status to Roman citizens but were accepted into/layered onto Greco-Roman culture and identity. Romans would have been cognizant of Egyptian culture/religion (and given that Roman tourist travels included Egypt).
Ancient tourists bought souvenirs on their travels– Casson (1994) notes “a distinctive type of cheap faience pot with a figure in relief on it of one of the Ptolemaic queens” which “appealed to visitors, who carried them off as souvenirs”.

The dimension that Val falls into has Roman, Greek, and Egyptian columns
Roman: stacked drums (fluted) or monolithic (smooth)
Greek: stacked drums (fluted)
Egyptian: stacked drums (with relief)
Tableware
Terra sigillata was a type of mass-produced red pottery with shiny surface slips and intricate relief designs. Distinct products include Arretine ware (produced in Arezzo/Italy), Samian ware (Gaul), and African red slip ware (North Africa).

Arretine ware: cups and plate, 20-40 CE, Italian red slip ware, Arezzo, made by the potter Inachus. https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/G_1814-0704-1554.

Jump, Dodge, and Groove: Your Ultimate Guide to Geometry Dash!
Welcome to the delightful world of Geometry Dash, the smash-hit indie game that combines pulse-pounding rhythms with devilishly tough platforming challenges. Whether you’re a seasoned gamer craving your next obsession or a casual player looking for some quick adrenaline-pumping fun, Geometry Dash has something in store for everyone. But be warned - it’s addictive, challenging, and may just keep you up all night chanting, "Just one more level!"
In this article, we’ll dive into everything you need to know about Geometry Dash, from its development roots to gameplay tips that will stop you from throwing your phone against the wall (no promises). Plug in your headphones, and let’s get started!

What is Geometry Dash?
Developer: Geometry Dash was brought to life by Robert Topala of Swedish game developer RobTop Games, a one-man band that crafted an icon in the gaming universe. The original version of the game debuted on August 13, 2013, and has since captured the hearts of millions worldwide with its blend of fast-paced action, music, and mind-blowingly challenging precision.
Platform: Geometry Dash is available for mobile platforms (iOS and Android), PC (Windows and macOS) via Steam, and even extended to spin-offs like Geometry Dash World and Geometry Dash SubZero. The game's portable nature makes it a perfect pick-up-and-play title for gamers on the go.
What’s the Hype? At its core, Geometry Dash is a rhythm-based platformer in which you guide a little cube (or another avatar of your choosing) through a labyrinth of obstacles — all while syncing up with catchy tunes that get your thumbs tapping. The levels aren’t just challenging; they’re beautifully synchronized with the music, creating a kinetic experience where games and beats collide. Think of it as a lovechild between Super Meat Boy and your favorite EDM playlist — but with more cubes and spikes.
Getting Started: How to Play Geometry Dash
If you’ve never played Geometry Dash before, don’t worry — the concept is simple, though perfecting it is another story altogether. Here’s a quick breakdown:
The Basics:
Objective: The goal is to navigate your character (a colorful, customizable cube) from start to finish in each level — without crashing into spikes, saw blades, or other obstacles.
Controls: The controls are delightfully simple — tap to jump or hold for longer jumps. That’s it! Despite its accessibility, executing perfect timing is where the real challenge comes in.
Rhythm Matters: The levels are designed around the game's catchy electronic music soundtracks. Timing your jumps to the beat will help you conquer levels more fluidly.
Game Modes:
Geometry Dash offers several modes to keep things fresh:
Normal Mode: Follow the base game levels, each progressively more difficult than the last. These levels are preset and meticulously designed.
Practice Mode: Stuck on a level? Practice Mode allows you to place checkpoints so you can pick up where you left off rather than restarting entirely. A lifesaver for beginners!
User-Created Levels: Dive into a sea of creativity with custom-made levels designed by fans. This extended mode keeps the gameplay infinite.
Tips to Conquer the Madness
Now let’s talk about how to go from "Why did I crash into that spike for the 50th time?!" to actual Geometry Dash mastery. Here are some handy tips for newbies and seasoned players alike:
1. Learn Patterns, Not Panic
Every level is a puzzle waiting to be solved. Geometry Dash thrives on patterns — obstacles are based on timing, not chance. Start slow, study the level’s structure, and recognize familiar patterns. Over time, your reaction time will improve.
2. Eye on the Music
Don’t sleep on the game’s stellar soundtrack, as the beat aligns with the level’s design. Use the rhythm to guide your timing — the more you tap in sync with the music, the more naturally you’ll progress through the level.
3. Practice, Practice, Practice (Mode!)
Remember, you’re not launching into a boss fight without preparation. Use Practice Mode liberally. This feature allows you to master tricky parts of levels without restarting from scratch. Once you’re confident, switch back to Normal Mode for the real challenge.
4. Don’t Be Afraid to Customize
Change your cube’s colors and trails! Customizing your avatar doesn’t just let you stand out—it also makes you feel more connected to the game. You’ll be jazzed up with YOUR little cube defying spikes and saws.
5. Take Breaks

Tinyblocks Minimal iPhone Setup Guide a review
Had I known that I could connect a Bluetooth mouse to my iPhone and use the pointer to reorganize my Homescreen I would have done that a long time ago. Apparently, this has been a feature since iOS 13, and later added to iPadOS 13.4. I know that using a pointer on my iPad is quite useful, but it never occurred to me to think I could do the same on my iPhone. As luck would have it, a fix found me!
<!-more->
When I came across Tinyblock’s Minimal iPhone Setup guide in a toot on Mastodon I was intrigued. It’s always taken so much time to organize, group icons into folders, set up the right widgets, and whatnot. Then you have to swipe around or open folders or, even worse, search to find an app. The Minimal iPhone Setup Guide promised an entirely new way to interact with my iPhone.
IMPORTANT: This guide requires certain features available in iOS 18 not earlier versions, so keep that in mind.
After donating a fiver* to the author I was redirected to the guide. I’d never seen anyone deliver an experience using Notion before, and I was pleased with the experience. It works more like a slide deck app than just some hokey web page, and the formatting is nice and clean. The guide walked me through the steps of how to set up their concept of a Minimal iPhone Homescreen and had it set up in a total of about 15 minutes.
*NOTE: The author lets you set the price you’d like to pay for their work. I chose $5 US, and I felt that was perfectly fair. I ask that you consider a similar donation for their effort.
The result is almost indistinguishable from a standard homescreen setup, but the added functionality is transformative. Using a clever combination of Focus modes, Shortcuts, and various iOS standards like the Dock, Lock Screen, and Control Center, you can configure a wide range of easily customizable dashboards that suit your needs in the moment. And, at least for four of these, at a single touch when placed in the Dock (as shown in the image below).
Left to right are my Dashboard, Blogging, Finances, and Multimedia pages, each accessed by a single tap to the icons in the dock. If you look closely, you’ll note that the icon that appears next to the time roughly corresponds to the icon on the dock the page is associated with. The reason they are slightly different has nothing to do with the guide, but iOS. Focus and Shortcuts do not use the same icon sets. It’s as simple as that. It would be nice if Apple were to fix that…
With this setup, I only have two folders (top left on my Blogging Focus) for things I need access to, but don’t open very often. That means everything I use regularly is no more than two taps away or otherwise inside a folder, and often just the one tap to launch. And I can still Swipe Right to get the Today view and Swipe Left to get the App Library in each of the Focus modes.
For the first few days I found myself swiping like my old setup, but I soon got used to that and now I’m fully on-board with this new approach to accessing apps. I highly recommend it to anyone who’s tired of swiping and searching.
For additional details, head over to the Tinyblocks website.
_PS: This is an entirely independent review. Tinyblocks has not asked for this review nor have I offered them to review it before posting. _

How to Implement Dark Mode in Flutter Apps
Dark mode has become an increasingly popular and expected feature in mobile app development solutions over the last few years. Integrating a dark theme can significantly improve the visual appeal of an app, while also promoting better accessibility and battery life.
In this comprehensive guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know to implement dynamic dark mode toggling in a Flutter app development solution, including:
- The growing popularity and benefits of dark mode
- How Flutter’s powerful theming system works
- Step-by-step implementation instructions
- Customizations for a polished dark mode experience
- Key takeaways and best practices
By the end, you’ll have an in-depth understanding of how to add one of today’s most on-trend features to your own Flutter mobile development solution.
Let’s get started!
The Rising Prominence of Dark Mode
Dark mode refers to a darker color theme where the background uses black or darker colors rather than white or light colors. Text and other interface elements use bright colors that stand out against the dark background.
The concept of dark mode originated many years ago for desktop operating systems and individual apps. But it rose to widespread popularity on mobile over the last few years thanks to Apple and Google.

Apple introduced system-wide dark mode support in iOS 13, allowing users to enable it globally rather than on a per-app basis. This was a major shift that prompted many apps to add dark themes. Google then followed suit by adding a dark theme toggle in Android 10.
With dark mode now easily accessible at the system level, users have widely embraced it. Today, having a dark option is seen as a standard feature that apps are expected to offer.
Implementing dark mode makes apps feel more modern, while showing users that their preferences are being considered. It has become a must-have capability for mobile apps to remain competitive.
Why Add a Dark Theme to Your Flutter App?
What exactly are the benefits of taking the time to integrate dark mode?
Lower Battery Usage
One of the biggest advantages of using a dark theme is improved battery life, especially on phones with OLED displays. Pixels displaying black or darker colors require significantly less power than lighter pixels.

Reduced Eye Strain
Staring at bright screens for long periods can cause eye fatigue and headaches. The lower brightness levels of dark mode put less strain on the eyes during extended use.
Enhanced Accessibility
Dark interfaces can increase accessibility for some users. They reduce glare and make screens easier to view in low-light conditions. Dark themes also increase the contrast between text and backgrounds, which improves readability.
Users with visual impairments, light sensitivity, or other conditions may find dark mode easier on the eyes. Implementing it makes apps more inclusive and user-friendly.
Visual Appeal
Beyond the technical and accessibility benefits, dark themes also look sleek and modern. Dark mode has become a popular aesthetic choice among tech enthusiasts and early adopters.
With all of these benefits, adding dark mode toggle functionality should be a high priority for most apps. Fortunately, the Flutter mobile development solution’s robust theming system makes implementation smooth and straightforward.
Flutter’s Powerful Theming Capabilities
Flutter app development solutions include highly customizable theming support through the Material Design framework. This allows quickly changing visual styles and colors across an entire app with just a few lines of code.
Theming is primarily accomplished using the ThemeData class in Flutter mobile development. This class stores the complete set of colors, text styles, and visual properties needed to define a theme.
Step-by-Step Guide to Building a Dark Mode Toggle
Thanks to Flutter app developers and their robust theming system, implementing a basic dark mode toggle only takes a few steps.
Let’s walk through them in detail:
Step 1 - Define ThemeData for Light and Dark Modes
The first step is to create separate ThemeData objects that define the appearance of the light and dark themes.

Inside ThemeData, you can customize colors, text styles, icon themes, and various other visual properties to your desired styling.
For example, in a light theme, flutter app developers may want a white background with black text and blue accents. While the dark theme could be a black background with white text and green accents.
Be sure to set the ThemeData brightness property appropriately for each one –
Brightness. light and Brightness. dark.
You now have two distinct themes defined that the app can switch between.
Step 2 - Manage the App's Active Theme State
Next, you need to track the app’s current active theme, so you know which one to display.
A common way is using a StatefulWidget that maintains the active theme in its state. Initialize the state to your default theme, likely the light theme.
You can then build a method to toggle the state between light and dark when called. This serves as your theme-switching logic.
Step 3 - Pass the Active Theme to the MaterialApp
With the state defined, pass it to MaterialApp using the theme property. This is where the state gets connected to the UI.
Now, when the state’s active theme changes, MaterialApp will redraw the entire flutter app development solution with the newly updated theme.
Step 4 - Add a Toggle to Switch Themes
Finally, it allows users to change themes with a toggle button or switch.
The toggle should call your state-changing method from Step 2. This will switch the active theme and rebuild the UI.
That covers the key implementation steps at a high level! With just those foundations in place, you will have a basic but functional dark mode toggle.

Next, let’s look at some best practices for enhancing the experience.
Evolving Beyond the Basics
While the above achieves a simple toggle, you likely will want to refine the implementation to polish the dark mode user experience:
Animated Transitions
The app should cross fade or slide animate between themes for a modern, seamless effect rather than instantly swapping.
Follow Platform Theme
Respect the system-level light or dark theme set by the user on their device for consistency.
Separate Color Schemes
Use distinct colors for dark and light modes tailored to each aesthetic rather than just inverting.
Adaptive Icon Colors
Automatically adjust icon colors to maintain sufficient contrast with the varying backgrounds.
With refinements like these, you can craft a polished dark mode experience that delights users.
Challenges of Dark Mode Implementation
While implementing dark mode offers many benefits, designers and futter app developers face considerable challenges to building a robust and accessible dark theme.
Maintaining Usability
While the visual appeal of dark mode is undeniable, designers must take care not to overly prioritize aesthetics at the expense of usability. Implementing dark mode requires more than just inverting colors—it demands reevaluating the entire interface and experience.
When transitioning a light theme to dark, designers should be alert for potential usability issues such as:
Text with previously high contrast becoming harder to decipher against the new dark background. Body text may need larger sizes or heavier fonts to compensate.
Icons losing meaning without differentiated colors to distinguish them. Adding selective color, backgrounds, or outlines can restore context.
Subtle visual cues like borders, disabled states, and notifications disappearing into the darkness. These may need brighter colors or selective backgrounds not present in light mode.
Dark mode should not be treated as a solely visual change. Designers must thoroughly test usability in dark mode using methods like:
Conducting user tests of key workflows to identify areas of friction.
Checking text readability and button/link visibility at small sizes.
Validating that icons and UI elements continue conveying their meaning.
Watching for loss of visual hierarchy, hidden elements, and user deception.
By taking a usability-first approach, designers can catch and resolve issues early before problems impact users. Dark mode can then enhance aesthetics without degrading core usability.
Adapting Dynamic Content
A significant challenge in implementing dark mode is properly adapting dynamic user-generated content. Text, images, videos, and other media from users often assume a light background color.
Some potential issues include:
Text with diverse colors blending into dark backgrounds, making it hard to read
User profile photos appearing dimmer and lower contrast on dark surfaces
Videos optimized for light mode looking too dark when themes switch
To handle user content, developers have a few options:
Apply automatic filters to dynamically adjust colors and brightness for dark mode suitability. However, this could reduce quality or fidelity.
Programmatically detect inappropriate content colors and overlay backgrounds for needed contrast. But this requires extensive technical work.
Adapting UGC for dark mode is an unsolved challenge with no perfect solution yet. Companies like Twitter and Youtube are still iterating and experimenting with possible options.
Cross-Platform Testing
Once dark mode is implemented, thorough testing is required to ensure it works properly across the full spectrum of target devices and platforms.
Dark mode should be verified on:
Different iPhone and Android models and OS versions
Tablets with various screen sizes
Desktop web browsers like Chrome, Firefox, Safari
Mobile web browsers on iOS and Android
Testing should validate:
The theme toggle functions reliably with no crashes
Animations and transitions perform smoothly
There are no layout issues on different screen sizes
Testing on the oldest and lowest-powered target devices is especially important to catch performance issues.
Rigorously testing dark mode across the full matrix of devices and platforms is key to providing a seamless user experience. Comprehensive testing protects against obscure platform-specific bugs.
Accessibility Considerations
While beneficial for some visual impairments, dark mode may be unsuitable for users with astigmatism, dyslexia, migraine disorders, and other accessibility needs.
Sufficient contrast ratios must be maintained, along with providing user customization options like brightness controls. Dark mode is not a one-size-fits-all solution.
Onboarding Users
Light mode users new to dark mode require proper onboarding on the benefits and how to use it. Instructions should guide users to enable dark mode system-wide if desired. First-time launch experience should be calibrated for potential disorientation.
By preemptively addressing these known challenges, flutter developers can deliver excellent dark mode experiences optimized for usability, accessibility, and delight.
Key Takeaways and Recommendations
Here are some top tips to remember:
- Treat dark mode as a first-class feature with thoughtful design
Provide an easily accessible toggle for switching between light and dark modes. Don't bury it deep in settings.
- Consider offering graduated options between the extremes. For example, allow adjusting system brightness or contrast levels within dark mode.
- Let users customize colors like accent shades and text hues to suit their preferences.
- Offer scheduling based on time of day, such as automatically transitioning to dark mode at sunset.
- For apps with many pages, enable theming on a per-page or per-section basis.
Providing abundant flexibility empowers users to fine-tune dark mode to their needs. Smoothly transitioning between modes maintains consistency. Customization options demonstrate attention to user preferences and accessibility requirements.
By not imposing a rigidly designed singular dark theme, apps enable personalization for the diverse range of users embracing dark mode.
Properly implementing dark mode requires considering many details, but Flutter app development solutions provide all the tools you need to build it right. The effort pays off with happier users and a more polished app.
Conclusion
Dark mode has clearly established itself as an expected and preferred feature in modern mobile apps over the last few years. Implementing a robust dark theme demonstrates attention to detail in design as well as adapting apps to follow emerging industry standards. As we have covered, the Flutter mobile app development solution’s powerful theming engine makes adding dark mode toggle functionality straightforward from a technical perspective. With some thoughtful refinements and customizations, developers can craft an impeccable dark mode experience that delights users.
However, while dark mode offers significant benefits like improved battery life, reduced eye strain, and enhanced accessibility, especially for those with visual impairments, it is not universally embraced by every user either. Flutter app developers should avoid assumptions and design both light and dark interfaces with equal care.
Looking at the future, dark mode will likely continue gaining prominence as a standard feature users want. Some areas for ongoing improvement include providing users with more fine-grained theming controls based on use cases or times of day. Smarter scheduling systems could automatically transition between light and dark modes based on sunrise and sunset. More user studies on the long-term impacts of extensive dark mode usage will provide valuable insights for refinement.
