Valenwood furniture concepts

As part of the Beyond Skyrim: Valenwood project, I designed this elven set of furniture for the Bosmer culture, wood elves who have sworn to never use plant materials in any way. So their furniture is largely made from animal materials like bones, antlers, leather, and in this case, also stone, that I thought would add an interesting accent. The title of the set was Cosmopolitan Lower Class, after I handed in my first sketches however it was upgraded to Middle Class. The fixed set of pieces includes thirty items total, from double beds to candles and chairs to counters. I had a ot of fun trying to get the most interesting shapes and construciton out of using a very limited set of materials; other furniture for the same project uses lots of raw bones tied with leather, and I wanted something slightly more sophisticated while using mostly scapulas and femur bones with some antlers. I am happy with how it all turns out and fits together nicely and can't wait to see it in game. Has anybody ever talked about how Welt is immediately the first one to jump in defense of dan heng when we ask him about the express crew?

Dan Heng was, in fact, the driest and coldest mfer you could find, I'm not going to deny that (hell, when I first started playing the game I didn't care about him in the slightest because of that). But Welt, the moment we just ask him about Dan Heng, immediately jumps onto saying that he isn't like that at all! That Dan Heng may appear cold and distant on the outside, but he's a child with a kind heart and he cares! He's just like that due to everything he's been through!

(also the way that he compared dan heng to his younger self... welt please, no more honkai impacting it out. you're making me cry.)

Welt also mentions that Dan Heng "told him he doesn't know what he's running away from, all he knew is that he had to run away". You know what that means?

That Dan Heng did talk with Welt about what he went through before the Express. Definitely not his time in the Shackling Prison, but the things that he encountered after he got exiled from the Luofu. That only proves that Dan Heng really does value Welt, he wouldn't tell something like this to anyone, so Welt must've really gained his trust somehow.

And don't get me started on how Welt says that he and Himeko will never let Dan Heng get hurt! And if anybody tries, they'll suffer their wrath! They're his biological parents, your honor. First Vidyadhara recorded to have parents.

I could yap so much more about Dan Heng's and Welt's relationship... Dan Heng really sees him as an authority figure, someone he looks up to by everything he says about him.

"Mr. Yang, could you provide your insight on this?" My guy, Mr. Yang is almost your father. He will kill everyone in the universe and then himself if even a hair falls off of your head. He is fathering so hard he is mothering.

It was odd how even after everything that had already happened, all the shock and horror and dismay, the realization and that first little microscopic shred of reluctant acceptance of what was happening again— the urgency of it all didn’t really hit Ryan until the split second in which Dylan began to reach for the pulled wire in the radio hut.

I really do try not to be a prick about (mis)characterization, since everyone interprets media differently and it’s inevitable for someone to view a character differently than I do… but I seriously don’t understand how people characterize Dan Feng to be some heartless cold villain who’s selfish and doesn’t care about anyone but himself. I’ve seen some people make him out to be this master manipulator who gaslights people, who’s also extremely flirtatious and seductive. And I’m like 🤔

To me, Dan Feng is similar to Dan Heng (of course). I think Dan Feng is a lot more reserved and serious compared to Dan Heng. Jingliu says, iirc, that he was a proud man. So he definitely had a bit of arrogance to him. But he wasn’t some master manipulator who manipulated everyone who knew him— he had people who he cared about (HCQ) and he was kind to his people as well (one of the NPCs you meet during DHIL CQ said that Dan Feng promised to heal all of their injuries with his cloudhymn. While that may just be a part of his duties, I do think Dan Feng was a kind man at heart.) Jing Yuan also says that many of the depictions of Dan Feng don’t consider that he was also a person who had feelings and wishes, just like everyone else.

I get that a part of the reason for the mischaracterization of Dan Feng comes from NPCs in game and from IOTD. But as much as the NPCs are like “Dan Feng bad”, we have other characters that equally drill the fact that Dan Feng wasn’t a terrible person and wasn’t the cruel monster like many people think he is, he was just as human as everyone else was. Also, the Dan Feng we see in IOTD is just how Dan Heng perceives Dan Feng— shaped by what the preceptors drilled into his mind from a young age. Even so, I don’t really see how some people get that he’s super seductive and manipulative from those sources 🤔

Like I said, I try not to be too much of a prick about characterization, especially when the character in question has a lot of conflicting depictions within the source material + a lot of unreliable narrators in regards to his story. But of course, I can’t control how other people interpret certain things ^.^

Also, take a shot every time I say “Dan Feng” or “Dan Heng” in this post 😅

Forget Me Not

The longing of having someone with us, the sadness of being alone and feeling we shouldn't have to. The low anger at them being so important to us that their absence hurts. The ever so slight need for revenge for their forgetting us, and our turning a cooling shoulder to reassure us of our independence. Acrylic and metal leaf on paper, ~50×70cm.

During a caffeine rush I put down a dozen drawings in the same vein and am currently painting them. Starting IOTD Gerry is 24 and Michael is 36…I wonder what Michael thinks of that. “God Michael you’re so weird! He could be freshly out of university!” (Meanwhile Gerry: “okay yeah that’s kind of cute not going to lie...”

I did think about this actually and then conceptualised a scenario in which they talk about this then go 😕😕 , both shrug and go ‘we’re both consenting adults with brains’ and move on
