Smoke and Mirrors

It has never been a more trying time to make a good buying decision these days, not with the way people are selling them any more at least. The “trapping” mechanism built into each product only seek to introduce decision conflicts that now transcends into the realm of psychology.

Allow me to explain.

Apple would certainly fit into that category of seller who has mastered that art to a large extend, gaining applauses from many clear-headed marketers of how she delivers her product offerings nowadays. She weaved with one simple goal in mind - get my fans to buy everything I have to offer, not simply a few.

Remember the trove of M4 iPad buyers that flooded the Apple stores when it was released? She clearly managed to sell that with much smoke and mirrors. Some were smart in buying within the return window of WWDC 2024 but not many did, in reality. Those who were left stranded were left with a standing mist of emptiness, having finally realised that the iPad is but an iPad after all.

It still take notes and allow us to open our documents in half-baked variants of Microsoft’s and Apple’s productivity suites, nothing more (the iPhone does that too with our fingers). It allows us to look a tad sleeker behind plane seats. It might turn a few heads occasionally but facts that it’s not a proper computer cannot be hidden forever.

So, unless you’ve got the very fundamental need of your use case squared away, you might too, end up with a device you would wonder why you end up having it anyway. The Apple iPad will always be a tool built to consume content as a primary, with some creation work allowed to be initiated on it as a secondary. Nothing more.

If you can get pass your own ugly handwritings and scribblings, the pencil will provide that one additional value proposition of which to own such a device. Adding a keyboard, trackpad and mouse to an iPad is just a “window-dressing” attempt to trick simple-minded users to own her.

Beyond that, she’s just a tablet that will allow you to be admired, envied or even start a conversation with a stranger next to you. It will still require you to own a computer to complete what you started on her. And that, my friend, is where Apple is heading with her all her “secondary” products.

What about the New Apple iPad Pro 13 M4?

The "prowest" thing that I found myself doing with my slew of Apple tablets (7 of them) is probably with the use of Luma Fusion on it, followed by Raw Power.

Those "blew me away" moments came further and further between each with time, with many claiming it to quickly becoming their glorified Youtube machines. I beg to differ to going that low with one's opinion on these wonderful tablets, but wouldn't go that high up with it ever possibly replacing my well-aged Macbook Pro 14 M2 Pro neither. Its positioned exactly where Apple wants her to be.

Being intentionally limited, I actually found the hidden virtue of these devices offering me something worth beyond her asking price - focus, something most casual users and influential Youtubers will overlook or fail to see.

Every task remains undistracted. Every moment remain uninterrupted. Every objective stayed on track. That's what such tablets bring onto the myriads of devices claiming to offer everything today.

To further exemplify what I mean, just take my Samsung Tab S9 5G tablet as a case in point. She literally can do almost everything I threw at her - coding, presentation, calls, messaging, emails, games, server administration, video edits (Luma Fusion is now on Android too) and banking finances and more. Her Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC actually chugged along and delivered...amidst the Android clumsiness no doubt. But her diverse capabilities also serve as nails to her dismissal, as her users attempt to manage that diversity of tasks. They often become distracted themselves, causing them to deliver a lacklustre task that they originally started with.

The collapse of the system comes when the Android OS itself strains under that immense load of omni-tasking and quickly struggles to deliver any engaging user experience overall. This triggers one's mind to avoid subsequent use since its now being tagged "nah". I will periodically be attracted to her for what I call - conscious first layer. It never got past beyond that.

In conclusion, that's what you are actually paying for - Focus. And I think its worth her asking price...every penny of it even for today.

Note - I am advocating the use of sensibility to choose your working Apple tablet as she offers different models of differing budget that you are comfortable with.
