I just found out the cutest little animated fairytale storybook, and of course my Ipad is dead, and I don't have an iPhone, and the app is iOs exclusive... Damn it. Well time to call for help/share some stuff :p

The app in question is part of a line called "Epic Tales". Or rather it was supposed to be the first of a line but apparently there is only this game? It was a Dutch creation that had a lot of positive reviews, and even won an award back upon its release (2013). It is called "Hansel and Gretel - Epic Tales" (Hans en Grieje in Dutch).

It is pretty much your usual "interactive storybook" experience on children's app, as the story is divided in a set of interactive tableaux retelling in a fun and whimsical way the story of Hansel and Gretel. BUT and here is where things get interesting: each tableau is intercut with hand-drawn animated cutscenes. These animations, done in the same style as the drawings, was done by the Anikey Studios (which are still present online, such as here their Vimeo channel, unlike the Epic Tales website which seems defunct - but the Epic Tales Facebook is still up).

You can find the trailer online on both Vimeo and Youtube - but unfortunately it is pretty much all you can find... There's screenshots over at the many review websites that covered this app, but not much. If I had access to the App-Store of Apple I would have bought it immediately but of course all my App Store access are dead... So I'll have to wait until I buy a new iPad X)

Unless someone ever can share info, screenshots or video of the app of course - I honestly take everything I can get, and I already thank deeply anyone able to help this improbable quest! Also, if you ever know (or see on the App) that there are other games in this line I am deeply interested - because animated storybook apps rarely have this much effort put into their animation. Heck when you put this app's images inside Google Images it confuses it with a Disney production - that tells the quality.

How does technology play a role in delivering news during the past (1800s) and the present (2000s)?

In the 1800s there weren’t iPhones and the Internet. The way Americans would get their news was from newspapers and magazines. The government had many subsidized printing contracts to print thousands of newspapers and magazines for all the towns and counties. They would be printed by the printing press and that was the technology they had.  There was a mail system that would deliver the newspaper and magazines through “discounted second-class mail.”  Nowadays everyone has a phone and internet so it is easier for people to get the news and information. Many people get their news from social media apps such as TikTok, Instagram, etc, radio, and news channels. Technology has changed so much that we can see what is happening on the other side of the world with just our phones and internet. (Gonzalez and Torres 5)

How have press organizations and journalists brought a racial bias to the news and media?   

Press organizations and journalists use stereotypes to “portray non-white minorities as threats to white society” and to bring hatred to the minorities. Many journalists write on their own behalf meaning that they write in their perspective of how they see things. Every journalist is different but it does depend on their “upbringing, education, class, race, religion, and gender” of how they see things in their perspective. (Gonzalez and Torres 2-3) 

In social media who has the power and how do they continue to keep their power? 

In social media many big companies such as Disney, Espn, Time Warner-CNN, NBC, Universal have most of the power on social media. They continue to keep this power by influencing people that use different apps such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, X. They influence you by putting specific things on your feed like advertisements of things that you have searched up so you can buy things and keep adding to their profit so that they can benefit off users.  

What is the relation between Karl Marx and social media? 

Karl Marx is known for his theory of Marxism which he “stressed the importance of the concept and development of socialism. He points out the struggles of each social class and how humans can change their lives and things that do happen. This leads me to social media and how humans can change social media by what they post. Social media is always up for change in apps and in different topics that can be brought up. Marx gives us a better understanding of the situations we are in and how they can be organized better. (Fuchs)

Goodnight 3DS eshop

the 3DS eshop shutdown yesterday, signalling the end of life for the system. so if you'd allow me, I'd like to talk a little bit about one of my favorite handhelds

I was bought an ambassador model 3DS for my birthday in 2011. an aqua blue model with one of the pretty admittedly meager selection of launch titles, Pilotwings Resort. I was ecstatic, I had been a proud passenger of the 3DS hype train ever since I read about its announcement in the Official Nintendo Magazine, pawing over every detail and rumor that was printed. I didn't have functional internet access at this point in my life so printed video game magazines like ONM and the then soon to rebrand Pokemon World magazine were my only portals into the world of video games, short of actually buying them in shops. Something that sticks in my head very vividly from the time between its release and me actually getting one was seeing an interactive display model in a duty free electronics store at an airport on one of my many unaccompanied flights to visit my dad. It was to my young brain, unlike any games system I had used before, baring more of a resemblance to the fancy new iPhones my parents were using than the DS lite I had with me at the time. Not to mention the 3D screen, a technology I had not experienced outside of cinema before (the first 3D film I saw was Avatar some years previous), the depth of field provided by this screen was genuinely amazing, and its use as a tool to aid gameplay in games like Super Mario 3D Land and the Legend of Zelda N64 remakes made it feel like a genuinely useful gimmick, even if it did often cause performance issues (due to the 3DS hardware requiring you to run two simultaneous GPU pipelines, rather than just rasterizing the scene twice like modern VR headsets work )

The 3DS was my introduction to a tonne of Nintendo's franchises, both old and new. It was how I beat my first Zelda game, in the surprisingly improved remake of Ocarina of Time. It was how I first played a Metroid game with the Ambassador Edition Virtual Console release of Metroid Fusion and it was how I first got to experience Fire Emblem in Fire Emblem Awakening.

In addition to this, it was my first real introduction to a system with internet connectivity and an online store. Sure the family Wii had the shopping channel, but the Wii was disconnected from the internet most of the time and I only used the shop once, after a well meaning but not tech literate family member bought a Wii points card for me, But the 3DS was mine, and I could browse the shop whenever i had Wi-Fi. The 3DS eshop had some really unique quirks even compared to later Nintendo storefronts, fun animations, trailers for upcoming games (which had to be downloaded as apps due to limitations in the eshop app itself) and a general atmosphere second only to that of the original Wii Shop channel. The Content on the eshop was incredibly varied too, originally it was a mix of smaller games similar to WiiWare (called 3DS Download Titles) and the downloadable DSiware that was featured on the short lived DSi system and its shop. but later it expanded to first include a portion of Nintendo's Classic games as emulated Virtual Console titles and later offering entire full "retail" games as downloads. Some of the most interesting 3DS download titles were the 3D Classics series, a collection of NES and Arcade titles re imagined to make use of the 3D display.

For all my love of this system, it wasn't all perfect. The first two years of the systems life was more Barren than the PS5's, and without the pandemic as an extenuating factor. My strongest memory of playing the system in its early years was playing DS games like Pokemon Black and New Super Mario Bros, while waiting for new 3DS games that are actually worth playing, something that was pretty rare. Several franchises had a pretty rough time on the 3DS, Pokemon for example had some pretty tortured releases with the buggy and kiddiefied Pokemon X and Y, and the stripped back and lazy feeling Mystery Dungeon: Gates To Infinity, a misstep that felt like it killed the series at the time. It genuinely felt like Game Freak couldn't really get a proper grasp on making 3D games, compared to the 2D/2.5D ones found on the DS and previous systems, something that has only become more clear with their switch releases being much the same way. One other Issue lots of people, myself included, had with the system during its lifespan was how Nintendo drip fed virtual console software over years, even when the same titles were already available on the Wii previously. An Attitude that Nintendo has continued with the Wii U virtual console and the new Nintendo Switch Online subscription service.

My time with my original 3DS was sadly cut short when, on my bus journey to college, a can of coke that was put in my bag without my knowledge exploded soaking everything in the bag in sticky acidic syrupy liquid, luckily for my sake the 3DS was the only thing killed, My Macbook with unbacked-up coursework and my hard drive with 3 unfinished mixing sessions both survived the incident only becoming faintly coke scented in the process. Several months later I was bought a "new 3DS" (Nintendo's naming scheme for the 3DS was Byzantine at best and Gilliamesque at worst). This new system was my introduction to Console Hacking and the homebrew scene, something I have been involved in as a user ever since and hopefully a hombrew developer as soon as I get the spare time to port something.

so it will come to pass that in 2033, Apple will be rolling out a new feature of "Self-repair", which will of course involve a deposit of an X amount of money (inflation is unaccountable for the future) for your Apple device to "Self-repair" through the night when you're asleep. it will be announced at WWDC 2032 alongside the iWatch series 16 (which of course, was renamed from Apple Watch after investors realized the reason not every single person had an Apple Watch must have been because they did not know it was called that and therefore couldn't buy it, so they created a viral marketing campaign, destroyed or tampered with every single record of its former name, and then created a psyop to say that the name "Apple Watch" was a mandela effect therefore destroying all credibility of the people who remembered it as such, but that's a different story).

when the update inevitably rolls out for the iPhone 24 and the MacBook Series W, many people will of course try to jailbreak their devices or just force them open (with the help of industrial grade lasers after Apple decided it was simply easiest to sculpt their devices from one solid chunk of metal and make them physically impossible to open sometime in 2027) only to discover obviously the phones could not create the resources to self repair (direct violation of the conservation of mass law) and that the only thing the update did once you sent them the money was send out a nigh-untraceable signal.

so a bunch of hacktivists demanding transparency would go on to find every possible address that might be tuned to that signal and post it online and of course the Apple censors could not get it fast enough through every possible channel (given modern Apple devices operated on an entirely isolated network separate from any other included the internet) so everyone without an Apple device would receive the information.

eventually bank records would show an address hidden within the forests of Oregon 1 (after Washington DC was renamed to Oregon 2) and it would be stormed by an angry mob, only to discover a group of tiny elves organized into strike teams to attend to every signal of a broken phone throughout the West Coast through little airplanes posing as those big fucking flies that show up sometimes and they were illuminated by a little neon sign that once said "self-repair station" but of course had the "s" blacked out and it was very humorous to everyone who witnessed it first hand but the joke of it died down.

This photograph, entitled ANAMORPHIC THUNDER BAY AS VIEWED FROM HILLCREST PARK has really grown on me. I remember something an instructor told me over thirty years ago when I first started formal study.

He said:

"No matter how great the story is behind a picture, no one cares. People just want to see a great picture".

That always stuck with me. There isn't such a thing as an overnight success. There's years of work behind it. One never really knows if an audience will connect with what is being presented. When I worked in film and TV distribution I strived to get titles in front of what I felt would be the best set of eyes. The ones that would appreciate what was being viewed.

When I photograph I try to capture the world the way I see it. And, I hope that the pictures find an appreciative audience. When a client buys a piece, I appreciate they're seeing something they connect with.

As a photographer, having the luxury of shooting for one's Self is often a pleasure. It allows for practise, experimentation and shooting with available time. Of course nature has its own clock. I've often gotten out of bed at 0400hrs in an attempt to capture an image.

THE PICTURE.

I put a good amount of work and experimentation into ANAMORPHIC THUNDER BAY AS VIEWED FROM HILLCREST PARK. Captured this past April, this high angle photograph, captured from Hillcrest Park overlooking Lake Superior, presents a good overview of Thunder Bay's residential and industrial waterfront, with the Sleeping Giant and Mountain McKay in the distance. During the past two and a half months the photograph has gone through various iterations before arriving as you see it. Shot in RAW, with an anamorphic lens and an iPhone!

VIEWING PHOTOGRAPHY.

My work looks its best when viewed as a fine-art print or on a large, colour-calibrated monitor. We live in an age where images are often viewed via social media, in low resolution, on a small mobile device. However, if you've the chance to view on a large monitor or even better, a hand-crafted print, this is where the beauty of a photograph really comes alive.
