Headcanon: Coping With the loss of a Significant Other
I’m feeling angsty... so here we are. Feel free to request more characters in this particular headcanon. I read the manga so I’m all caught up
Izuku
Izuku lives with a hollowness inside his chest.
All of his aspirations to become a hero now seem… futile
How could he be a hero if he couldn’t save you?
Izuku continues on his chosen path, but his eyes are different now.
No longer do they hold the same shining excitement and anticipation as before.
There’s a grim determination, a type of quiet but intense desperation in his green eyes.
He must succeed; nothing else matters.
No one quite knows how to approach him, usually, he was the one giving comfort.
Whenever your name comes up, his face contorts with pain for a split second.
In the end, it’s Aizawa and All Might who sit Izuku down and tell him to go to therapy.
At first, he resists, but the two of them bring him around.
“Is this what they would have wanted? You, running on fumes and anxiety?”
No, of course not. (Name) wanted more for him. No matter what, they had been in his corner. Cheering for him.
It would take years before even a shadow of the old Izuku would emerge, but he would never smile like he did before.
He couldn’t.

Bakugou
It’s eerie how quiet he is about it.
No one has seen him scream, cry or mourn in any way.
Everyone is scared to mention your name, there’s no telling what he’ll do
Until one day, someone slips—maybe they found an article of clothing you would like, or a snack you ate.
As soon as your name is said, Bakugou destroys whatever he’s holding. The mistake isn’t made again
There are dark circles under the scarlet eyes, a testament to how he sleeps
No one asks about it
The blond seems to be constantly distracted, he makes obvious mistakes in training, spaces out during lessons and forgets to do his homework.
Eventually, it becomes too much, and he snaps.
It would be during training when he made a critical mistake, and someone ended up badly injured.
For a split second, he thinks the person he hurt was you. He sees your lifeless body before him. Your blood on his hands.
The next thing he knows, Katsuki is in the nurse’s office, lying down on a bed.
Aizawa, All Might, and his parents are there.
He’s been signed up for special counseling on Mondays and Thursdays.
He doesn’t get to say no.
On every Monday and Thursday evening, Aizawa meets Bakugou and they spar, go over lessons and spar some more.
Traditional therapy wouldn’t work, so this is the next best thing.
Eventually, the young man comes to term with his grief. And he cries so hard he almost passes out.
It hurts, and still would for years into his career before it settled into a dull ache. Something that he could ignore and maybe forget.
Occasionally, he wonders that if he had to choose between-- never meeting you or meeting you and losing you, which he would choose.

Todoroki
A part of him is always going to be in denial
How could you be gone if you’re everywhere?
He hears your voice in crowds
Smells you as he walks to class
Sees your figure out of the corner of his eye
It’s driving him crazy.
Shoto finds himself talking to you in his head, a few times he had been doing it out loud before realizing something was wrong.
He knows he’s not fine
But he will tell everyone who asks that he is anyway.
At the height of his grief, he practically reverts to how he was before the sports festival in his first year of high school
Seeing him smile was already rare when you were around… now it’s nonexistent
The only person he would talk to is Rei, his mother. She would listen to his rambling or wait patiently in his silence.
And it’s his mother who suggests he gets help, mental stability is important, and he shouldn’t lose his… not so young
Shoto considers it—he knows deep down that she’s right. But how could he talk to someone he doesn’t know, about someone they would never meet?
In the end, she invites a counselor from the hospital to sit in whenever Shoto visits, the doctor says nothing, only listens.
Fuyumi and Natsuo start finding excuses to spend more time with him, hoping that their presence would help Shoto heal.
Eventually, he would heal.
But it would always hurt.
He lost the first person he was emotionally vulnerable with
How could he move on?

Toshinori/All Might
It hurt to lose Nana, it was devastating.
When a hole was blasted through his torso, it hurt like hell itself. The pain, so intense, anyone else would have died from it
But this..?
It never occurred to him that a feeling beyond devastating could exist.
He blames himself, even though there was no way he could have prevented it.
‘Symbol of Peace’ indeed...
You were worth so much more.
Surely the world had more goodness in it when you were here
You did so much good, always strove to do more--above and beyond
Toshinori couldn’t bring himself to pack away any of your things
He liked seeing traces that you did exist
Your sweater on the back of a chair, or a misplaced sock on the floor
He kept buying your favorite drinks, even though he didn’t like them very much
It’s young Midoriya who saves him.
The bright-eyed teenager starts training harder than ever and constantly asks for advice.
The ex-Symbol of Peace throws himself into teaching to the best of his ability
It’s what you would have wanted after all
