I HAVE AN IMPORTANT QUESTION
IS HEATHCLIFF/ISHMAEL A VALID SHIP.
I started shipping them in like Canto IV but I feel weird about myself after Canto VI but NGL Cathy seems less like a viable love interest and more of a plot point and an important beat in Heathcliff's backstory (you could argue the same for Queequeg too but also she's dead)
I think their pairing is interesting and they work well together in the sense of "they hate each other but their obsession on each other doubles back to romantic feelings"
But also I took a screenshot of every notable shipping moment in Canto VI and only found like 10— I think it's just over but I'm never letting this shit go

Best example I could find— their experiences mirror each other in some regards so seeing the other make their same mistakes makes them angry
They just have good personality chemistry in general. Even platonically they're silly.
Okay today's rant's over, I've been thinking about this one for a while 💜

I love Heathmael as much as all of y'all but you gotta see how funny this ship is now after Canto V.
Ishmael all her life believing herself to be an exclusive woman lover with her undying love of Queequeg and the sparks of obsession with Ahab (she had the smallest crush on Ahab when she first boarded the Pequod, you cannot convince me otherwise).
And then she has her bisexual awakening in Canto V.
Imagine the sheer hilarious anguish she's feeling as she realizes that fucking Heathcliff is her bi awakening.
Heathcliff, who's always bickered and fought with her from day 1.
That very same Heathcliff who saved her just like what Queequeg did all those years back.
"Do I like men?" Ishmael thinks to herself one night.
"No. I just like Heathcliff." She retorts to herself before SCREAMING into her pillow. She refuses to think about this thought further but she knows that Heathcliff awakened something in her and she hates it.

Untapped Heathmael potential of both of them reminding the other of their partners.
Those two are professional HATERS of each other.
But at the same time Ishmael one day gets hit full-speed with the longing grief once she realizes Heathcliff’s silhouette reminds her of Queequeg. One time at the brink of death Heathcliff accidentally calls Ishmael "Cathy?", her red hair and the blood on his eyes causing him to mix up the two.

I love seeing Heathcliff and Ishmael interacting because of a very weird reason. Doesn't even have to be a ship or anything. It's the kind of interaction where I want to grab these two and study them under a microscope. Put them in a jar and then shake the jar.
It's really refreshing because whenever a girl and a guy interact in pieces of media you will inevitably have another character assuming that they must have a romantic relationship. I've seen this so many times, not only irl when I (still identifying as female back then) talked to just about anyone in high school that consisted of 90% guys, but it's SO PREVALENT in manhwa too. Plus the trope when the guy meets another girl, girl 1 immediately assumes girl 2 will replace her and I'm so tired of that rampant display of heteronormativity.
So it's really refreshing to see a dynamic like this between a girl and a guy, where the two constantly show not to be getting along with eachother with the underlying reason being implied to be that they are TOO SIMILAR, yet they're also consistently put next to eachother (they both have binding imagery, they are back to back in the bus, their chapters follow eachother, they are both from English language using works, they both utilize blunt weapons, they are LITERALLY NUMBER 7 AND 8) At least it is for me.

You will not die, Heathcliff, not as long as you put your entire faith in me. I swear upon my honor as Captain that I will bring you back to shore, safe and sound, into the arms of you dear, beloved Cathy. You will not die because I will not allow you to die.

mid 1800s vaguely book canon inspired Ishcliff/Heathmael au where Heathcliff is mid revenge plan and Ishmael is some scrappy sailor on a whaling vessel, they meet when Ahab docks them in port to restock. They get into a bar fight.
