I wanted to list all the souvenirs they have on the bus and now i have thoughts and i have noticed things that are making me SAD

Canto i: Wow the vibes are bleak. Obviously they have Yuri's mask hanging up but what's interesting is that both Charon and Vergilius are looking at it, Charon makes sense cause they were bonding but Verg less so. Maybe he just feels bad someone uninvolved died. Dante and Gregor are both going though it look at them. This is actually one of the problems I have with Canto i, Gregor doesnt really get any closure? Just gets traumatised again. The fact that no one has bothered to clean up the blood shows how low everyone's mood is.

Canto ii: Yay we're having fun now!! This time we have a poker chip, which feels more like an actual souvenir instead of a grim reminder. The Sinners are getting along more! And mephi is clean so thats nice

Canto iii: I'm not sure what the souvenir is meant to be? Maybe a piece of metal or a spear head? Chicken reward is great but kinda ominous when you take into account they go to K Corp next, Heathcliff, Meursault and Ryoshu's food crimes are very funny. Is Verg watching to make sure Charon doesn't choke on the chicken?

Canto iv: Don't know how they're hanging a photo from the bus window but ok. Everyone is chilling. Love how Yi Sang has the light on him, kinda makes it look like he's talking to the mirror again. Interestingly this is the first credits art where Verg is interacting with the Sinners, his pose is more relaxed too, loser is getting attached lol.

Canto v: I assume the rope is knotted in Queequeg's style, ouch. Don got her ice cream, good for her. I don't know what's happening with the seagull and I'm not sure I want to.

Canto vi: Heathcliff staring at his ring, pain. The heathcliff flowers being the only thing with colour, pain. Is Don looking through a box of toys? Did she steal it from the manor? Heathcliff might have let her since they do actually seem to be quite close. I can't really tell but is Dante holding the burnt bough in the back? I thought it was meant to be white? But now the sad thing I haven't seen anyone talk about yet, Verg is looking at the photo of the orphanage, given his talk with Faust about not getting everything he wanted out of the contract due to his interferance it's possible he's given up on seeing Lapis or Garnet again as that was the whole reason he joined Limbus Company which Faust knows about :(

The after math of gregor's canto..

The events left all the sinners and their manager in despair, yuri's death was forever engraved in their minds and hearts, but they know the life of fixers wasn't easy, and it came with sacrifices. yet gregor's silence was the loudest ... no one dared to speak to him or strike a conversation, not even rodya thought she was able to save him. his eyes would stare into the distance while his lips barely held the cigarette in place and forgotten to be inhaled as it burned away. what could be said to the man who couldn't rescue an innocent yet tormented soul? yuri was like a mirror reflection of himself..

he knew if she was still alive, they could heal together and overcome everything. to protect her when she needed it and comfort her when he could ... but she was gone. yet another shard lost in the glass fragments he can't seem to ever repair. how many did he lose at this point?.

as everyone left for their bed quarters, rodya stopped gregor before he could walk to the darkness of his room. Her lips twitched, yet for once, her words seemed to disperse into nothing but her concern stained eyes, and as if gregor catched on .. he didn't wish to worry her. he smiled or at least tried to and told her to have a good night. and once he was all alone, he sat at the edge of his bed engulfed in his guilt. yuri's bleeding head detached from her body fresh in his mind, replying like a broken record. he should've held her hand and told her to stay in place. Why didn't he? gregor was fighting an endless war in his head, desperately washing away the haunting thoughts, knowing he'll soon drown with them, a fool and a hedious pest is what he was. a soldier had no place in leading a normal life. dying in the fry with his comrades was the goal, and he didn't achieve it. their ghosts embrace his body, instead reminding him of his failures.

the sinner rummaged for his cigarette pack with a shaken hand biting one of the last few left. Getting the lighter was even harder, but he managed to proceed to fill his lungs, hoping it'll muffle the raging voices inside he wasn't brave enough to cry her loss. thinking he was undeserving to seek the comfort of shedding tears for all his loved ones, but that night, it streamed down his face. he sobbed quietly till the universe lost its meaningless existence, muttering his apologies and pleading to be forgiven..

he now visits yuri's gas mask he placed on the bus whenever he could. When it's unmoving, he finds himself talking to her about his day, and everything he finds interesting happened. almost like she was truly still there.

i was so sad when dante thought she was gonna backstab him when she just was sending an obvious signal imo. she was excellent in this intervallo she definitely moved up a few places in my sinner ranking. i honestly feel as though the sinners doubt each others skills because i KNOW if they saw outis during the war theyd immediately shut up about teasing her.

hong lu....... im so excited.... him bringing up yi sang here is really nice considering hong lu was the "pair" for yi sang (the most important sinner whos not the focus of the canto like heath was for ishmaels canto and sinclair was for dons canto) i really hope yi sang is the one for hong lus canto and he can give hong lu a reason to stay at lcb (hongsang brain talking but also full circle would be nice).

also the story revealing half the sinners were just listening into their "private" conversation is killing me now half the bus knows about hong lus feelings and hongsang relationship problems.

ryoutis crumbs for me thank you everyone should consider liking ryoutis their dynamic is great its gonna be even greater when they both realise ryoshu basically ran away from her family and outis is chasing hers i cant Wait missed opportunity if limbus doesnt do something with them.

ricardos back i saw people being like he should be like team rocket for intervallos and i agree hes funny middle finger toujou is a fucking banger. i kinda cheesed his fight with random bullshit go (manager don and dieci hong lu double slot with multicrack faust and lobcorp ryoshu) post-nerf but it didnt make me as suicidal as his first fight so thats good.

the sweeper fight... sucks whys it the one you have to farm its pure random bs i can winrate one and come out relatively fine BUT WITH THE SAME TEAM ON ANOTHER RUN DOING WINRATE THEY ALL DIED?? enough about my anger at the stage. (also its so fucking blurry on my phone man its laughable).

man the introduction of jia qiu (who is apparently confucius thats fucking hilarious) was so good seeing qingtaos decapitated head was genuinely one of the most chilling moments in the game naigas art is gorgeous man.

i need to flesh this out once i’ve mulled it over more but i adore how limbus company expands on the incredible world-building of project moon, because it is so goddamn realistic.

from the outset the player is presented with this incredibly bleak world in which corporations have become the state. the poor and the desperate bow their heads and toil at the altar of the free market. worth is measured by talent in exploitation. it’s a social darwinist’s wet dream. i also think the choice to base the cast off of literary figures was amazing, because it highlights very important connections to the past. i haven’t read all the books referenced, but the ones i have (the metamorphosis, don quixote de la mancha, & the odyssey so far) draw an unmistakable through-line from the suffering and exploitation depicted in those books to that which occurs in the city. the most horrifying parts of this game in my opinion aren’t the monsters or the machines — it’s the sheer enormity of human suffering which exists in the economic and political system the city operates under. and that’s the worst part, because in so many ways, the suffering and exploitation portrayed in the city is not a hypothetical fantasy — this is just capitalism working as intended. it’s not confined to the historical context of those books, nor the gritty sci-fi horror of the game.

but not only do we have this incredible setting that’s somehow both brutally realistic and fantastical at the same time, we also get to see how our main cast attempts to survive in that world — and ultimately how none of their attempts to change it succeeded at all.

in my mind, canto i portrays how neither kindness nor cold-heartedness will help you survive — especially through the dynamic between aya and hopkins. gregor has been both. he was a war hero in a meaningless war. after it ended, he was discarded as any tool which had outlived its usefulness would be. he can’t even control his arm from becoming a killing machine. and yet, gregor is still exceptionally personable, even going out of his way to be kind at times. but no matter whether he’s a tool for violence in the hands of war profiteers or simply a man doing his best to protect others, he still couldn’t save yuri — just as he couldn’t save his comrades — and this clearly haunts him. neither the war nor its end changed anything.

canto ii shows between rodya and sonya how both direct action and an “inevitable” revolution fail to quell the suffering of the vulnerable. sonya’s revolution is all bluster and no action. he does nothing to help the people in his community in favor of this grandiose revolution that must happen at the “right moment” — even if it means leaving his neighbors to starve in the meantime. rodya’s inspired yet short-sighted action to remove what she saw as the source of her community’s suffering only led to its destruction: the tax collector was a branch, not the root, of the problem, and killing one person did nothing to stop the system which upheld them.

canto iii is even more clear-cut in the ties between sinclair and kromer: neither violent zealotry nor blissful ignorance will save you in the city. kromer’s cult does not “purify” anything, but sinclair’s courage to stand up to her isn’t enough to beat her either. canto iii still doesn’t end in a victory. dante and the sinners barely survive. it’s only through demian (and k-corp’s) divine intervention that the sinners and kromer don’t destroy each other in the corpse pit.

in the most recent addition, canto iv appears to do the same thing. on one hand, you have the devotion to a principle shown through shrenne, samjo, and donbaek. their causes are different, but their devotion is the same. on the other, there is the cynicism, indifference, and escapism of yi sang and dongrang, both willingly complicit in the machine in different ways. and yet — none of them make any positive difference. whether they resisted or submitted, the machine grinds on around them — the only choices are to become a cog in it or be ground to bits by its gears.

to be clear, i do not think the game is arguing that none of these individual actions matter. even if gregor couldn’t rescue yuri, even if rodya couldn’t protect her neighbors, even if sinclair couldn’t defeat kromer and all that she stood for, even if the league of nine members each failed to realize their ideals — limbus argues that it matters they tried. it matters that they’re still trying. it may never be possible to oust the corporate overlords and make the city a better place, but the love still matters.

Something I see repeated a bunch when it comes to discussion of the Sinners' ages is that you have to be 20 to become a Fixer, and so the Sinners are all 20+. I usually see this most in discussions about Sinclair, and I just need to make a post discussing the misinformation. This is not evidence for canon ages!!

Limbus Company is not an Office and being a Sinner does not make you a Fixer. We can see this in the profile cards that are in the background of the main menu.

Her picture isn't in it, but this is Ishmael's profile card. Note the bottom where the field "FIN (Fixer Identification Number) is filled and then redacted.

For Heathcliff's, who we can safely assume was never a Fixer, this field is blank. Heathcliff is not a Fixer, and Limbus Company is not an Office. Limbus Company is just a company that hires out Fixers every now and then, like Vergilius and Yuri.

The minimum age requirement would only apply to Ishmael, who was a Whaler. However, these background elements have been retconned before (i.e. Don's armor in her theater portrait). But even in that case it wouldn't make sense for many Sinners to have been Fixers! Why would Heathcliff, known Syndicate member, suddenly turn around to become a Fixer? Or Yi Sang, who only ever worked with Wings and the League of Nine? And of course, Sinclair. He has no combat experience! It would go against every part of Sinclair's character for him to have been a Fixer prior to the events of the game, and so he very well may not meet the age requirement. Our own standards or common sense don't matter either, since like, Gregor was the poster boy for a war at fifteen. And a preteen led an entire department of Lobotomy's HQ. The City is fucked up man.

At the end of the day this whole deal isn't that important, but it's been a pretty major pet peeve of mine to see this circulated as fact when it has not been implied and does not mesh with the information that exists.

CANTO 4 SPOILERS BE WARNED

I think it's really interesting (and clever) that we're a third of the way through Limbus' plot (theoretically. 12/4 = 3 after all) and we've split the focus characters in half based on who is actually growing because of their Canto and who isn't, while also showing multiple narrative ways to show that progression (or lack thereof).

Gregor and Rodya have already done their growing. Gregor's a war veteran whose traumatic past should be long behind him, and his character didn't shift after his Canto. His refusal with regards to the whole Yuri thing wasn't a shocking twist, it was the culmination of years of rejecting the life that his mother made for him.

Rodya rejects the idea that she has to develop as a character entirely. Canto 2 is mostly a celebration of Rodya- she makes her own luck and doesn't require these things like "character growth" and "dynamics". She was a one woman wrecking crew then and she's one now, plans and friends be damned. It's why she's able to reject Sonya's olive branch: he's predicating his entire plan on the idea that Rodya would have learned from the Tax Collector Incident. But she didn't, and she knows that.

Sinclair's Canto 3 marks the first Canto where we're actually examining the failings of a member of the team. Sinclair's immaturity, fawn response and unwillingness to take responsibility did directly lead to all of the bad shit that happened to him. Even if Kromer would have done it anyways, Canto 3 takes Sinclair to task for what he did, but in the end, he can't follow through. It's beautiful and tragic that he needs Demian to bail him out of what should have been his cathartic moment of triumph. Sinclair's growing is actively still happening. Canto 3 is only the beginning.

Which brings us to the most recent Canto and Yi Sang. Yi Sang in hindsight is the perfect character to follow up Canto 3 with because Yi Sang is essentially Sinclair if Demian wasn't around. Yi Sang's narrative is about apathy and passive suicidality- he doesn't care what happens to him because life has lost all meaning to him. Sinclair still has some fight in him, all Yi Sang has is ashes. Or so he thinks. Dongrang and Dongbaek are characters who will never move on from their past, despite what both of them think. Yi Sang, through mirroring them, ends up with the most radical character development we've seen so far: true catharsis. Unlike our three previous characters, Yi Sang's Canto manages to get down to the core of his issues and he's able to understand what he must do to get better and does. He conquers Dongbaek (embodiment of rage) and Dongrang (embodiment of despair) and ascends to a place of healing away from them. This is a very conventional, classic character arc structure seen in fiction since the dawn of time, it's classic because it works. But it feels so refreshing and new here in Limbus Company because we waded through three quagmires of difficult regrets, abuses, and traumas that refuse to be handled so easily. Given that our remaining characters are based on murderers (Hell Screen, The Stranger), self-saboteurs (The Odyssey, Moby Dick, Don Quixote, Faust), and the legacy of racism (Wuthering Heights), I'm betting that Hong Lu's might be our brightest spot moving forward. (But who knows. They could give us another goofy Canto out of nowhere like they did in Canto 2. Limbus Company contains multitudes.)
