a bunch of personal warriors headcanons because why tf not
kinda a long post so check them out below the cut!
- “brat cat” is a derogatory term for a kittypet. the kittypet stereotype falls into two categories: the “fat and lazy” types that are most frequently brought up in canon and the “spoiled, holier-than-thou” types that openly denounce clan cats and other ferals because they don’t have the “alliance” with twolegs that allows them to be fed and protected by them. these “brat cat” kittypets are the smug assholes that look down their noses at the clans because their beloved owners chase them off with brooms for being “lowly, unbecoming strays” that have to actually HUNT for their food and FIGHT for their turf while THEY just have the luxury of having it all handed to them. undoubtedly more likely to taunt the clan cats into a fight but they definitely get cold paws and the last minute and fuckin bounce because they’re humongous cowards that just like to talk big
- cinderpelt has the doofiest, purest smile than could brighten anyone’s day. she gets it from her dad lionheart
- whitepaw got teased a lot at her first gathering because the other apprentices found out she was brightheart’s daughter and would LOUDLY and OBNOXIOUSLY shout awful shit like “mutant spawn incoming!!” and “UGH i wouldn’t DARE show MY face at a gathering or even on a PATROL if MY mother looked like THAT” and birchpaw just strolled up and was like “haha yeah and if you keep saying that shit you won’t have to worry about showing your face anywhere because i’LL CLAW IT OFF”
- darkstripe admired tigerstar so much because he was the only kit in the nursery during his youth and tawnyspots was too sick to spend much time with him. like, he admired tigerclaw a great deal because he was constantly trying to show off how strong and cool he was and while the warriors mostly got annoyed with him and the apprentices always made fun of him, tigerclaw mostly just...tolerated him more than the others (perhaps out of a bit of pity because his father was never around for him either and he was the only kit in the nursery once, though he’d never admit this out loud). once darkpaw became tigerclaw’s apprentice the pitying definitely came to a halt because darkpaw turned out to be a poor fighter and sub par hunter, but was very cocky and just tried waaaay too hard to gain attention and praise in general, and as he gradually got better at things, the arrogance got to his head a lot more. needless to say, tigerclaw was IMMENSELY relieved once darkstripe became a warrior, only to be dismayed that darkstripe would always stick to him like a burr on his haunches regardless.
- runts aren’t necessarily considered helpless by default or lost causes by the clans. in windclan, they’re believed to be able to run much faster than their clanmates on the moor or become the best tunnelers. in thunderclan, they’re lighter on their paws and can sneak up on prey much quieter than their heavier counterparts. in riverclan, they’re very efficient swimmers and fishers that are especially good at diving. in shadowclan, they can chase frogs and rats and can be concealed better in shadowy areas of the marsh. all smaller-than-average cats are also praised in battle for their agility and speed, as their size makes them difficult targets. the only main concerns for them are illnesses being too hard for their bodies to fight off.
- firestar didn’t enjoy the kittypet life at all, but he did secretly miss his twolegs for a time and worried about them until he found out about them adopting hattie. their happiness was the most important thing to him even after he joined thunderclan.
- willowpelt didn’t conceive graystripe with patchpelt, but instead with a kittypet she had a classic summertime romance with. they ended their relationship on good terms after the father decided the kits would fare better as clan cats, and willowpelt raised graystripe alone without naming a father to the clan. everyone silently assumes that whitestorm sired graystripe (i just hate that the patch x willow thing...they’re siblings)
- the grief he felt after silverstream’s death (added on by the additional stress of his whole life catching up to him in his old age) very likely contributed to crookedstar’s death from greencough.
- swiftpaw had a really fantastic and close relationship with bramblekit and tawnykit as their half-brother, he always visited them and their mother in the nursery and played with them or brought them treats whenever he could. the pair were utterly destroyed when they learn that he was killed by the dogs.
- appledusk looked remarkably similar to crookedstar, hence why mapleshade targeted him specifically (tho it WOULD be interesting to wonder if she haunted reedshine’s kits and / or shellheart or at least attempted to...hmm)
- cloudtail’s kittypet name was “cotton” during the time he was sneaking to twolegplace for food as an apprentice (after his super fluffy white fur), pinestar’s was “dusty” after he left thunderclan (i know he refers to himself as “pine” at the end of his novella but i honestly doubt his owners called him that lmao; they named him that because he was dirty all the time), and graystripe’s was “pouncer” when he was captured (because of his numerous escape attempts and stuff)
- reena undoubtedly had a crush on talltail and wanted to be his mate, but she was perfectly fine after she put two and two together and realized that he loved jake and didn’t want to interfere with their happiness
- snowfur was completely and utterly disgusted by thistleclaw’s actions toward spottedpaw, and the first thing she does when spottedleaf dies and comes to starclan is apologize profusely for her former mate’s despicable behavior. spottedleaf tells her not to apologize for his atrocity and the two become quite good friends
- sunfall / sunstar had romantic feelings for moonflower and the two of them had always been close friends, but he ultimately respected her decision to be with stormtail. however, he did quietly disapprove of how emotionally distant he was towards his mate and daughters, as he never seemed to interact with them much or even seem to care that he had a family. after moonflower’s death and stonepelt’s early retirement, sunfall directly asked pinestar if he could have bluepaw, feeling that he owed it to the late moonflower to ensure that her kit had the best education. pinestar likely knew about his loyalty to the fallen warrior and his interest in her, so he agreed.
- brambleberry and echomist [nudge nudge lesbians in my stormstar au nudge nudge] DEFINITELY took on the roles of being crookedstar’s adoptive mothers after rainflower disowned him
- breezepelt is a very good daddy to smokehaze, brindlewing, woodkit/paw, and applekit/paw as he always had the desire to be a better parent than crowfeather ever was to him [yes...i read crowfeather’s trial and know all that went on, but still]. his relationship with heathertail is ridiculously dorky in private, since he’s always had a soft spot for her
- sometimes cats with some kind of plant in their name [stuff like “leaf”, “flower”, “stem”, “branch”, “petal”, and so on you get the drill] try to have a piece of whatever plant from their namesake in their fur somewhere [ex: hollyleaf had a holly berry and leaf tucked in by her ear, goldenflower had the stem and flower of something woven around her tail, so on and so forth]. cats with feather or bird prefixes or suffixes try to do the same with feathers
- there’s an old myth that says kits born on the night of a full moon are suspected to grow up and become leaders someday. some cats believe this to be true, while others don’t
- as it is stated that cats must fast during their journeys to the moonstone and moonpool, it is considered a sin to kill prey at both sites. for example, if a cat were to kill a mouse or something in the caves of mothermouth or around the moonpool, their kill is considered to be pollution of the sacred ground and is to be promptly discarded somewhere else, as it would be considered insulting to starclan if they eat it. punishments for breaking this rule depend on the medicine cat or the leader.
- killing a medicine cat is like, one of the WORST atrocities any clan cat could do. it’s as horrific and treasonous as killing a leader, as the medicine cat not only keeps the clan healthy, they also communicate with starclan. imagine someone walking up and killing some sort of religious leader right in front of their congregation. pretty heinous, right? exactly the clans’ point. the only reasons a medicine cat would be killed was if they were intentionally committing treason against their clan [intentionally causing harm through malpractice or intentionally sending false signs from starclan] or if they were gravely ill or injured themselves to the point where they would be better off put out of their misery
- female leaders and deputies can indeed have kits of their own. mothers who happen to be leader usually keep her litters inside the leader’s den instead of moving to the nursery; it’s private, warm, clean, and well-protected. leader mothers can still partake in regular duties such as arranging patrols and hunting parties, addressing the clan, and holding ceremonies, and either has another queen look after her kits should she be absent for some occasion [like a gathering] or leave them with their father if he is involved. deputy mothers, while they most often end up going to the nursery since they usually sleep in the warriors’ den, can also carry out their own duties while another queen looks after her kits in her absence. all that matters is that the kits are loved and properly cared for.
-  as for the unnamed diseases that have killed characters, here’s my takes: tawnyspots died of feline leukemia, pebblefur and shellheart died of stomach cancer, sweetpaw died from complications caused by intestinal parasites (very likely worms that resulted in a blockage), leopardstar died of diabetes (confirmed), ravenpaw died of liver cancer (confirmed), goosefeather died of encephalitis (inflammation of the brain usually caused by infection, confirmed), petalfall died from epilepsy (confirmed), and dandelionkit, mistkit, and nightkit died of fading kitten syndrome (essentially the cat version of failure to thrive). i also think the whitecough is a chest cold, greencough is pneumonia, and that yellowcough could’ve very possibly been feline distemper, but idk
- adoption is considered very noble. i personally really fucking hate the attitude of characters who were adopted finding out and being like “i have been BETRAYED...i can’t believe these ABSOLUTE SCUM loved me, raised me, fed me, protected me, when they were NEVER even related to me by BLOOD? absolutely despicable, i must find my REAL parents and be loved by THEM instead...even if they are total assholes or want nothing to do with me...i can’t believe i was stupid enough to believe these IMPOSTORS were ever really my parents...” it’s just a really stupid mindset?? taking in another’s kits for whatever reason (the mother dies, the parents didn’t want kits, etc.) is considered a great service on the same level as raising their own biological kits. now whether or not said kits grow up and want to confront their birth parents about giving them to someone else or want to know them better is entirely up to them. the clans see adopted kits are better than abandoned ones that could very easily die from exposure or predators, or going through the possibility of them living in an abusive situation because they weren’t wanted or were unable to be cared for correctly.
- speaking of kits, the reason we have the standard “one to four” litter sizes is that overpopulation would be a problem. the average queen in real life can give birth to three to five kittens in a litter, which isn’t too far off from the quantity in the warriorsverse, but also bear in mind real queens can have as many as TEN kittens in a single litter and occasional more. think about it: the mother would need to eat a lot to produce enough milk for numerous mouths; the kits will grow older and want to explore, and there’s a very high risk of one of them slipping out of camp unnoticed and getting into trouble or danger if they’re from a large litter; plus they’ll wean from their mothers and move on to fresh-kill, and a stampede of ten or so hungry kits is going to leave hardly anything for anyone else in the clan, even if they share their food (not to mention, large litters would undoubtedly suffer the greatest during famine, outbreaks of disease, or prey shortages...that’s a lot of bellies to fill and illnesses spread quickly). so tbh i can see where the erins are coming from with the smaller litter sizes in the series, as we all know feral cats are notorious breeding machines
- i do have a few names picked out for kits and apprentices that didn’t live to be warriors, so here’s a few: mosskit would’ve been named mossheart (after her father, oakheart); swiftpaw would’ve been either swiftclaw, swiftstream, swiftwing, or swiftwind; ravenpaw would’ve been ravenflight or ravenswoop (i know he didn’t die but yknow, fun to speculate); sweetpaw would’ve been sweetberry or sweetsong; shrewpaw would’ve been shrewstep; wishkit and hopekit would’ve been wishlight and hopeshine; mistkit and nightkit would’ve been mistfur and nightstone; seedpaw would’ve been seedfern; molepaw would’ve been molenose; gorsepaw would’ve been gorsefire (named after firestar); willowkit and minnowkit (silverstream’s sisters) would’ve been named willoweyes and minnowclaw; snowkit would’ve been snowcloud; finchkit (tallstar’s sister) would’ve been finchfeather; marigoldkit and mintkit would’ve been marigoldleaf and mintfoot; lynxkit would’ve been lynxfang; adderkit would’ve been adderthroat; blossomkit would’ve been blossomsnow; and juniperkit and dandelionkit would’ve been junipertail and dandeliondust.
- darktail was a HUMONGOUS mama’s boy. he loved smoke with all his heart, would’ve done anything for her, and all he wanted in life was to make her proud of him. smoke was also a pretty good mother to him, feeling like she had to make up for her mistake of mating with a clan cat and fawning over darktail because he was the only survivor of the litter. i like to believe that smoke struggled with mental and emotional issues after being rejected by onewhisker/star, and would go off on furious tangents about how horrible clan cats were. darktail grew up watching smoke have these episodes, so he learned to hunt and fight and practiced really hard to she would be happy. needless to say, he was completely crushed when smoke died and mourned her heavily for a long time, and said grief undoubtedly contributed to him pushing so hard to abolish the clans.
- thornclaw and blossomfall were never actually in love, they only had kits together because blossomfall wanted some and thornclaw was getting older and wanted to contribute before he retired to the elders’ den
- brokenstar’s regime was a lot, and i mean a LOT crueler than what the readers were delivered:
she-cats were forced to get pregnant as often as possible, even if they weren’t interested. as soon as their bodies were able to bear more kits after the birth of one litter, brokenstar ensured that they would mate and be impregnated again asap. queens were often overwhelmed by having numerous kits to care for at a time, both older and younger, which led to much neglect the majority of the time. not that brokenstar cared, because to him, more kits meant more warriors. the stolen kits also added to the hoarding. infertile she-cats were often exiled for “not contributing to shadowclan’s destiny of greatness”.
speaking of stolen kits, i like to think that he ordered shadowclan to steal some windclan kits before driving them out of the forest. these kits didn’t fare very well, as they were smaller and skinnier and not as hardy as shadowclan kits, and many of them died save a few. it’s unknown if the stolen kits that did survive brokenstar’s reign ever returned to windclan or spent the rest of their lives in shadowclan since they spent so long there and would struggle to relearn living on the moor.
cats were forbidden from hunting for fresh-kill, as brokenstar believed that all physical and mental energy should be focused on fighting and fighting alone. in the place of prey, they often ate garbage and the carcasses of already-dead animals they found. needless to say, this left everyone prone to illness and nearly all of shadowclan was severely malnourished.
runningnose was forced to present false prophecies and omens to the clan because brokenstar and his main goons forced him to. they were all talk of how shadowclan would rule the forest, all the other clans would fear and serve them and see them as superior in every way. while only brokenstar and his team of muscleheads believed him (and some kits / younger apprentices who were too little to know any better), nearly everyone knew these signs were bullshit.
fighting among clanmates was nearly constant. most of it was brutal battle practice, while other times it was over pitiful scraps of rotten food or disagreements over how the clan was running. usually cats that tried to leave or go for help were killed or “disappeared”.
- quince went searching for tiny / scourge after she saw that he had run away. she encountered the same two kittypets who warned him not to go into the woods, and explained that he hadn’t listened to them. quince then went into the forest and finally caught scent of her son’s blood and found his bell, and assumed that the clan cats she also smelled in the area had killed him.
- smudge honestly considered following rusty into the forest to join the clans with him despite being terrified of them, as he feared for his best friend’s safety and was heartbroken that he decided to leave. the only reason he didn’t is because he also was worried that his twolegs would miss him and that the clans wouldn’t accept him.
- heathertail and kestrelflight are sister and brother, being born to onestar and whitetail.
- before the whole fire fiasco, ashfur was very, VERY pissed to see that squirrelflight had supposedly gotten pregnant by brambleclaw. when jaykit, hollykit, and lionkit were born and suckled by ferncloud, he ending up straining his relationship with his sister by being very against it, using the whole “brambleclaw’s father killed our mother” thing as a reason why she shouldn’t be caring for them. ferncloud knew that her brother had taken squirrelflight’s rejection very poorly, but she never expected him to take it out on a litter of kits, so she cut ties with him. “those kits should’ve been mine anyway” and “they’ll turn out just like tigerstar” were things often muttered under ashfur’s breath. needless to say, he was less than thrilled to find out he would be mentoring lionpaw, and we all know how their relationship turned out after awhile.
- as stated in canon, daisy and spiderleg’s relationship was never based on the fact that they loved each other; they both felt pressured to supply kits for the clan (daisy because she was tired of some cats thinking she was just there to take up space and made assumptions about her loner roots, and spiderleg because he simply felt that it was his duty). they had a one-night stand, which resulted in toadstep and rosepetal.
- sleekwhisker was like, no doubt trying to force her way to darktail’s side as his main lackey (which she kinda was in canon) and possibly his mate. it was a “love for power” sort of situation rather than her genuinely wanting a life with him, while i don’t think darktail looked at her even as the “boss’s favorite floozy” kind of girl. sleek was more focused on that sweet sense of superiority and control, and darktail likely knew that, so always shot down her advances. they both were pretty much after the same thing, sleekwhisker only kept up a facade of a blushing she-cat wanting a big, strong leader for a mate while darktail was basically more concerned with what he already had going for him, not love or hooking up.
- bone is barley, violet. hoot / snake, and jumper / ice’s father. though he never actually spoke up about having kits, his sons’ striking resemblance to him and violet’s resemblance to a she-cat bone had been talking to kinda wrapped the question of their parentage among the bloodclan population pretty quickly. their mother fell ill and died unexpectedly, and bone was certainly never active in their lives, so he never stepped up to finish raising them. he didn’t really even care he had children or that his mate died, it was just something that happened.
- i like to think that berrynose and poppyfrost accidentally ended up falling in love in the midst of helping each other get through the grief of losing honeyfern
- lizardstripe actually ENCOURAGED her kits to bully brokenkit when she wasn’t abusing him herself. she wanted to make it clear to him that he would NEVER be accepted into their family fold, and excused her litter’s behavior as them “toughening him up” since he had to learn to stand up for himself “as he’s got no family outside raggedpelt, it seems”. she was just a shit mother in general, not caring much for her own kits already but she sure as HELL wasn’t going to look after one that wasn’t hers at all. brokenkit was a little burden and pest to lizardstripe, and she wanted to drive that message home as hard as she could, not once stopping to think about the consequences...

August 6th, Happy Birthday Hamtaro!
Hamtaro is our main protagonist of the show! Finally, it’s his time to shine!
Hamtaro is often referred to as a “golden hamster”, albeit his fur being cream-colored like pretty much all males in the series, and he sports an orange semi-circular stripe that runs around his forehead. He also has an orange spot in his butt and his back is orange up to the tail.
Hamtaro's personality is the embodiment of childish innocence, kindness and adventurous. He is also apparently oblivious to love matters, as he considers them “too complicated”. That, however, doesn't stop him from becoming a great friend to anyone that spends more than 2 minutes talking with him. Hamtaro likes to help his friends, and he is also a natural born leader, that all the Ham-Hams run to him to ask him for an opinion or decision on a subject. Hamtaro is also very dumb not only to love, but other stuff that should be quite obvious for many, but to be honest this is a common occurrence between all the Ham-Hams You could say many of them are just small furry 5 year olds though that might be a given due to the target audience. During the series he keeps growing up, if only subtle, and sometimes we can see an slightly annoyed or a blatantly angry Hamtaro, but these times are quite rare.
Hamtaro lives with his owner Laura Haruna, the human side protagonist of the series. He is a good friend to Brandy, the Haruna’s dog . The series starts when Hamtaro's family moves to a new town, and he goes out to explore. However, before that, he lived in Sumire Town together with Laura. Hamtaro is the only Ham-Ham of whom we know his parents are, more specifically his mother. He was born to Yuki, a white hamster that was a pet to a kindergarten in Sumire Town, which Laura attended.
However, and we won't go too deep on this, the Hamtaro manga originally gives a whole lot of different family trees for Hamtaro (there's 5 of them in different generations!). Hamtaro's Japanese name is Hamutaro-kun, which it's pretty much a direct translation. The “taro” part is a common suffix for boys names. For example think of Momotaro (Peach Boy). Hence, Hamtaro's translated name would be “Hamster Boy”.
In the Japanese dub, Hamtaro finishes most of his sentences with “nanoda” or “noda”. This is just a cute addition to his speech, emphasizing his childish portrayal as it is mostly used by kids. He also refers to himself as “boku”, which is mostly a young boy’s way of saying “I” or “myself”. Compare to Boss’ “Ore-sama” which is more smug and thinks very highly of himself.
Hamtaro's birthday is once again another Goroawase pun. Same reason as Cappy is the fact that the words for 8 and 6 can be read as “Hamu” or Ham. According to some interviews from Ritsuko Kawai, Hamtaro’s creator, Hamtaro's original birthday date before the anime started was July 24th! (That might be why Prince Bo’s birthday is that specific date now.)
Relationships
Hamtaro is an involuntary stud. For a guy that literally has no interest on love, he has quite a bunch of ladies after him.
Bijou, naturally, is the main one. Albeit Hamtaro only sees her as his “best friend”, multiple media and merchandise like to picture the two together, sometimes even in clearly couple situations, for obvious reasons, as they're both the main characters of the series. They interact in pretty much any episode, and they even have a “date episode”. However, Hamtaro is too dense and never really officially reciprocates Bijou's feelings. This is the most supported pairing from the fans, but sadly the series never offers a proper conclusion. There is, however, the third movie, in which Hamtaro appears to be really focused on his task to “retrieve” Bijou from the pirate gang. This can be interpreted as he being jealous, or he just being his usual goofy self of “don't be mean to my friends”.
Sparkle comes a close second. Although she was very abrasive to the Ham-Hams at first, in later episodes she develops both a crush on Hamtaro and a rivalry for Bijou, which given her straight-forward and fighting nature, makes her a quite obvious contender for the hamster’s heart.
Continuing on, and to far less degree, we have a whole array of secondary hamsters that one way or another fall in love with the hamster, but we won't get on much detail: Oshare, Bijou's French friend, apparently out of nowhere, develops a crush on Hamtaro that is not hard-pushed as she is only officially in love with him for one episode.
Lapis, although not ever really developed, is very close and friendly to Hamtaro, and that makes Sparkle put her under the radar of possible love rivals. The kiss she gives him in the cheek (which make him blush like crazy) doesn't help either.
Lazuli, Lapis' sister, also falls in the same category in early episodes, however she quickly leans towards Snoozer.
Barette, in her original episode, appears to be interested on Hamtaro, but that fades away later on.
Penelope, apparently, has a crush on Hamtaro, but we don't know if this is short lived or not. In the presentation audios and also in the Love Love Attack Plan song, as well as a bunch of episodes, it is implied that Penelope has a crush on Hamtaro. Given how easily she crushes on many other creatures, this might be just a phase.
And then, we have two other contestants, although these are up to debate as they were probably more meant as a joke than actual love interests:
Jingle, who apparently can't ever remember Hamtaro's name, is always around to offer his jammin’ support, and even take care of him when he was sick. He also pushes Hamtaro into becoming a wild hamster and travel with him a few times, so clearly has an interest in the golden boy.
Bo, who considers Hamtaro his best friend, clearly expects a lot from the boy and acts a little embarrassed and nervous about him. Their relation in the third OVA clearly shows there's something going on. Now, although I have been pointing out that Hamtaro clearly has no interest in love, this has two exceptions. Both are exclusive for movies, so it is debatable whether we should consider them canon or not since Hamtaro acts pretty ‘non-canon’ in these movies to be honest.
First, and this one is also featured in the series, is Laura. Mainly in the first movie (but also in later episodes), Hamtaro develops a clear crush on Laura. And we're not talking innocent “I love my owner”, he really loves Laura romantically. The whole plot of the first movie is how he wants to spend Laura's birthday with her and he is sad and jealous when she goes out with her friends, but specially freaks out when Kana mentions Travis. In the anime he also worries when Laura tells him she is going out on a “date”, and he stalks her to see with whom. We can discuss if this is some kind of innocent love, but it is undoubtedly romantic love.
Lastly, we have Hamtaro's only love for a same species critter: Princess Cye-Ra. In the second movie, Hamtaro falls in love the very same moment he sees Cye-Ra in the flesh for the first time. This is painfully clear as he gets awe struck and then nervous and blushy around her. Later on he gets a kiss from her on the cheek, and he pretty much freaks out and ponders why his heart is beating so fast. Later on, Cye-ra reunites with her fiance, and Hamtaro is truly devastated. But, to date, this is the only time Hamtaro has truly loved someone.
Episodes
Now, since pretty much all Hamtaro episodes focus on the boy one way or another, we will only highlight a few. Episode 1 – Hamtaro!
Naturally the first episode of the series is a very important one! Hamtaro gets to explore his new house and meets a few new friends!
Episode 24 – Hamtaro, please come home!
Hamtaro gets trapped in a box inside a truck that is going to some place far away! Laura and the Ham-Hams frantically look for him but will Hamtaro ever returned?
Episode 114 - Hamtaro, the Knight A typhoon blocks Laura's parents from getting home, so Laura and Hamtaro spend a scary night alone. Hamtaro decides to act as a Knight and protect Laura!
Episode 135 – Hamtaro gets Cold
Hamtaro overhears Laura wrong and thinks she doesn't like him anymore, so he goes on a journey with Jingle. But he catches a cold, and Jingle has to take care of him!
Episode 251 – Oh no, Hamtaro!
Hamtaro is stuck at Mindy's house after playing, and he has to return, but Boss decides to pretend to be him so Laura doesn’t get worried!
Episode 271 - Hamha-Man the Justice Hero
Hamtaro dreams that he is a Hero of Justice and have superpowers! Who will he fight?
Movie 1: Adventures in Ham-Ham Land!
It’s Laura's birthday, and he prepares a lot of gifts for her! However, Laura leaves with her friends, which makes him really sad. And a bit angry when he learns that Travis is there too. Later, the Ham-Hams learn of Ham-Ham Land, when there's a magical seed that allows a hamster to speak the human language! Hamtaro wants to use it to wish Laura a Happy Birthday!
OVA 1: 3000 Hammy Steps on Search of Mommy
It is Hamtaro's birthday and he decides to go search for his mother! She is apparently in a far away place, but his friends are there to help! Meanwhile, the Ham-Hams that are left preparing his birthday party!
Hamtaro's birthday is a very special day for everyone! Happy birthday!

Old Anitami, Part Two: Noun Classes
<<Previous: Orthography, Phonology, and Phonotactics
I initially wanted to spend only one week on nouns, but this is long enough as is, and now it looks like I might have to split up cases into two posts. So, noun classes! These categories mostly aren’t productive in modern Anitami, but we still have all the morphosyntactic residue left over.  It’s one of my favorite things to teach, at least to Anitami speakers, since it taps into a set of patterns we’re all vaguely aware of but don’t really have a solid grammatical explanation for.
There are five classes in total: animate, inanimate, human, abstract, and miscellaneous (which isn’t quite accurate, but I’ll get to that when I get to it). [ooc: amentans are not human, this is a translation convention]. Each one has a characteristic affix which appears in every case except the nominative, and a few have characteristic prefixes as well. Pronouns must agree with class, as well as object-markers on verbs (which are optional), the mandatory subject-markers need not. They’d all be class 1 or 3 in any case.
Class 1: Animate. This one is fairly straightforward – animate things all have some sort of internal vital force. The words for person (one of the few “human” words that isn’t in the human class), all animals, and ghosts and other supernatural beings are all prototypical examples. Fire, and by extension computers in modern Anitami (literally fire-ensouled things) are animate, but not other electrical appliances. The words for heart, lungs, brain, stomach, and blood are animate, but not other organs. A couple of virulently fast-growing species of plants are animate, but I can’t recall any off the top of my head.
The stem ending for this class is –(a)nen.  If the noun ends in a vowel, the a will usually drop out. The remaining vowel may shift around depending on additional case endings.
Vocabulary: Fila, human; Laman, animal; Halmi, fish; Anno, snake; Kisa, fire. Particular animals names are often prefixed with na- (as in Nalinwi, cat), and birds names are often prefixed with e- (Emala, owl), but these fall away in compounds. These would decline as Filanen-, Lamannen-, Kisanen-, etc.
Class 2: Inanimate. Even more self-explanatory than class 1. Inanimate nouns are concrete, tangible objects, which are not, even by metonymic extension, alive. This is also the default class for loanwords after about the middle of the classical period, even if they’re semantically abstract or animate, but this is mostly only relevant to technical or religious vocabulary. There are plenty of weird other weird exceptions, but they’ll all be covered as they come up in the other classes. It should probably go without saying, but classes are morphologically fixed and don’t vary with the particular semantic context. In a play about a walking, talking rock, the rock would still be grammatically inanimate.
The stem suffix for this class (i/a)l, depending on vowel harmony.
Vocabulary: Talla, tree; Ert, seed; Lothe, flower; Kalka, glass; Alash, stone; Kaimat, house; Maen, bread. Tallal, Ertil, Lothil, Kalkal, etc.
Class 3: Human. This class covers all caste names, all professions names with a couple of exceptions, the words for child, man, woman, etc., all family relationships, etc. – anything that a human being, and only a human being, could be.
The stem suffix for this class is –(a)nath.
Many nouns in this class end in the agentive suffix –mi (Kisantami, Lamenelmi, etc.), which roughly means a person who does/is x, and also shows up pretty frequently in personal names. It’s also the source of my favorite example of rebracketing in any language! As most of you probably know, the people who first spoke the language we now know as Anitami called themselves the Anaita. The word for a person form this group was, naturally, Anaitami (Anaita-mi). Later on, -mi ceased to be productive and lost its particular meaning, along with the other personalizing suffix (–li, meaning a person similar to x, also still found in personal names). Both began to merge semantically with –i, the class 5 stem ending (in that both indicate a particular instance of a large thing, but see my notes on class 5 nouns). Later still, the Anaita establish a nation, and contemporary speakers naturally break down their demonym as, not Anaita-mi, but Anaitam-i. Those of you who were paying attention last week will remember that Anaitam contains an illegal stress, therefore it must reduce, and it does – to Anitam.
Vocabulary: Alasi, singer; Aven, judge; Pallan, builder; Tis, actor.
Class 4: Abstract. Here, things start to get a little more complicated. Class 4 is defined as “abstract” in every grammar textbook, but it really has to do with collectivity. (I can’t claim any credit for this concept, or for my understand of class 5 nouns. I got it all from my first Oahkar professor, of all people, who’s actually Anitami and generally pretty fascinating).
The core abstract nouns – childhood, age, peace, war, guilt, contentment (and all emotional states), wisdom, talent, etc. – can be thought of as a kind of summation over a lot of specific instances of a thing. By identifying a shared property over series of specific things (children, time periods, attractive people, whatever), you arrive at the abstract, or collective, noun.
For the same reason, all gerunds are grammatically class 4. In this sense, they’re conceptualized as the summation of a bunch of individual instances of the verb they derive from – I enjoy eating, I need to practice swimming, reading helps one learn Anitami, etc. all imply repeated, habitual action. Nominalized adjectives (e.g. the poor, the rich, the beautiful) are almost all class 4.
Human collectives are also all class 4, with the exception of caste names, even if they’re arguably concrete. The words for family, nation, language, and ethnicity are class 4, and the names of all individual nations and languages and ethnicities gain a class 4 stem suffix as they decline. This is one of the few features of the noun class system that’s still productive in modern Anitami!
Concrete nouns that inherently refer to a something with a large number of smaller parts are often, though not always, class 4. The classic examples are hair, fur, feathers, dust, grass, and snow. Inclusions in this category aren’t consistent, and it’s best to just look up a list if you’re confused about whether a particular noun is class 4 or class 2.   Of course, this is utterly bizarre if you’re conceptualizing class 4 as abstract nouns, but it makes perfect sense when you think about it in terms of collectivity.
The stem suffix for this class is –(ik)at. This class includes an unusual number of words which include the stem in their nominative form; unlike the other classes, the first two characters don’t reduplicate. Estikat, but Peikatat, etc.
Vocabulary: Estik, knowledge; Menal, goodness; Peikat, strength; Yahai, childhood; Waln, fur.
Class 5: Miscellaneous. Not miscellaneous! The textbooks are wrong! Class 5 can see like a catchall, until you realize that the central metaphor involved in instantiation. Nouns in this class are individual instances of more comprehensive objects or processes. The most central examples are deverbal nouns – words which derive from verbs but behave grammatically as nouns – that refer to particular events or actions. Scratch (from “to scratch”), song (from “to sing”), promise,  reading (in the sense of “this passage has multiple readings,” or “he gave a reading of his poetry”), etc. Note that this only applies to nouns that are actually derived from verbs, and not nouns that sound similar to verbs because they share an etymological root. As with class 4, inclusions in this category really can’t be derived from first principles, and it’s always safer to consult a list.
Also by a similar process to class 4, singular things that ordinarily occur in groups are usually class 5. A blade of grass, a speck of dust, a snowflake, a puzzle piece, etc. Many class 5 nouns in this category don’t have class 4 equivalents, though, and vice versa.  By analogy, many partial, broken, or otherwise incomplete things are class 5 – fragment, shard, unfortunately lots of words for physical disabilities, etc. Adding the class 5 ending to other nouns is a really old-fashioned way of denoting that it’s broken.
Approaching the metaphor from another angle, things that are made are frequently class 5.  The idea is that they’re the material instantiation of an abstract idea, or in the case of more utilitarian objects, one example of a form that’s repeatedly instantiated. Painting, sculpture, carving (for more than one reason) are class 5. The words for characteristically earthenware utensils (like bowl) are class 5, but not the words for characteristically metal ones (knife). It’s not entirely clear why, but the leading theory is that it has something to do with the metalworking process inherently requiring more people.
All words for units of measure are class 5, and units of time are considered particularly paradigmatic. Finally, the words for ambassador and foreigner are class 5 – the only human words that aren’t class 3 – because they represent “instances” of a foreign people. Demonyms are also class 5, for the same reason.
All class 5 words end in –i in the nominative. The stem suffix is –min.
Vocabulary: Walni, bowl; Neloti, reading; Halti, scratch; Fayali, year; Lossi, snowflake.

[4~!]
What are some things you are tired of seeing in the RPing community?
I have A List, but I’ll try to narrow it down to the most recent ones that tweak my toes.
Box ThemesI don’t use this to point at any specific community, because they all have them. I’m a part of at least eight highly-populated rpcs where there are box themes present. They’re all in this really big clique too, like it’s a requirement to rp with anyone in this group or something. It’s weird, but that’s not initially why I salt over them.I salt all over box themes because they are typically this huge intricate background where the buttons for links merge into the busiest part of the background; I’m here to read your rules, not play Magic Picture with your fucking links okay, and you won’t even talk to me if I don’t read your rules. To add insult to injury, even when I do manage to find all the links by some miracle of some deity, the main blog content is in this teeny tiny 150x150 pixel box in the middle of the screen with text so tiny and so formatted I have to turn on my zoom feature to read any of it. Usually, it’s black on black too, which is really a pain. How am I supposed to even get an idea how to respond to your reply if I can barely see it.And don’t even get me started on the overlaying picture of the box, the one that constantly shows up the instant I scroll down so I can’t see how far I’m scrolling...LSS if you use a box theme like this, I will manifest in your closet and whap you with a fresh river trout. No exceptions.
I Wanted To Talk/Plot, But Not Actually With YouAlso the You Were The Only One Who Interacted With Me, But This Popular RPer Just Liked My Promo/StarterAgain, not pointed at anyone or any rpc in specific, because it’s happened to me since Tumblr RP became a thing. But I am seriously a totally chill person who doesn’t want to intrude on you, so you can literally tell me point blank that you don’t want to rp or plot anymore and I’ll feel bad sure, wouldn’t we all, but I can’t stop you for it. Rather than ignoring my attempts to continue talking to you in the hopes I’ll just go the fuck away or whatever, just give me closure, positive or negative. This ain’t a poke at people who work or go to school for a living, I totally understand, but I mean the little beasts who will drop you like a hot potato because you’re not popular enough, who only talked to you because you Liked their promo/starter posts first or something.
Aesthetic TagsWhen did those become a thing? And how useless are they, like come on. My computer’s old and can’t see even half of those emoticons you put in front of, in the middle of, and after the words on your tag so it’s all just the ‘NOT HERE’ boxes. What happened to the good old fashioned days of just typing in your partner’s url or the thread title or something. As a sidenote addendum to this one, I never liked the ‘tw’ as a prefix or suffix on trigger tags, it made no sense to me. Like, if you’re so squicked by it why do I need to put down a complicated system? Are you NOT going to blacklist your trigger straight up? The only exception to this rule right now is the NSFW tags because Tumblr Staff is run by a bunch of monkeys with their thumbs so far up their bums they can peel a banana with that hand.
PasswordsI honestly have no idea when this showed up either. Just one day we were all happy go-lucky and now everyone has a password. Almost, kudos to those who still don’t I love ya. Trust me, you’ll know if someone has not read your rules.
When Did Sexuality And Gender Identity Become A Character Traitself-explanatory
When Did Mun = MuseIt’s not as obvious, but I notice the witchhunts are still abound for fictional content. I like reading Lovecraft’s writing, but that doesn’t make me a raging racist bastard, nor does it change the fact that I would hit him with a bus if he miraculously walked out in front of me. The people who write shit like that shouldn’t be demonized unless they are hurting real life honest to god people. Just look the other way, guys. Muse never equaled Mun, even if the fictional content isn’t to your liking. You don’t stop reading your favorite book or watching your favorite movie because it has questionable content in it, or if it bothers you, you put it down and walk away. Same logic here. Unless I see real life people being hurt, I will put it down and walk away.MUN=/=MUSE

I had an ok week. Some final duplicates work is done, and there is some polishing to the new tag autocomplete.
duplicates
The duplicates filter can now detect if static images with the same resolution are pixel-for-pixel duplicates! If they are, it gives one of the standard 'comparison' statements on the right hover window. Furthermore, if one file is a png and the other not, this statement will colour green/red and bias heavily to the non-png, since the png is likely a bloated 'clipboard' duplicate that you don't want. Pixel summary data is not cached long-term, so this routine takes a bit of extra CPU. It only kicks in if both files are images with the same res, but nonetheless please let me know if this makes the duplicate filter too laggy for you. I expect the new 'pixel hash' data will be cached at the db level in future to auto-resolve png/not-png dupes like this.
Also, the duplicate filter will now match the two files' zooms even if their resolution ratio differs! Zoom is now locked so the two files' widths are matched, along with the files' top-left corners. Two files with resolution 1920x1080 and 1912x1080 will now line up pretty good even if you zoom and pan.
And I have written a new system predicate for whether a file is the best file of its duplicate group (also called the 'king'). It provides an easy way to find only the best files, or only those that are not the best. It is bundled with the old 'num duplicate relationships' system predicate under the new 'system:file relationships' predicate.
I also fixed an issue with the 'custom action' button that wasn't letting custom actions go through unless some file was deleted--the final deletion question dialog now has a 'delete neither' choice, which is the default.
And if you want to feel some despair, Mr Bones now reports potential, duplicate, and alternate counts.
The duplicates storage overhaul is pretty much done. There is plenty more I could do, but I have now finished the main db focus of the work. Beyond some final UI stuff, there is only some decent new help to write. I would like to have that done next week, so I can draw a line under this job. It was more work than I expected, but I am overall really happy with it.
tag autocomplete
Last week's autocomplete changes seem to have overall gone pretty well. However, being able to search so fast has revealed some old 'limiters' I had in place to stop certain super laggy searches going ahead. And some old wildcard logic was flawed. Now we have more power with this control, I have been able to clean it up a bit.
First off, entering something like 'character:*' should now work everywhere (although it will likely lag a whole bunch once the final results come in). Also, searches with an explicit namespace, like 'character:ara', will now match 'character:samus aran', just as the simpler 'ara' does. Wildcard searches, like 'char*:sam' or 'c*r:*mus' should be a bit more sensible overall, finding more possible results and matching complicated queries more reliably.
And 'media' autocomplete fetches, which happens on a search page when you start typing with thumbnails already loaded, should also be much faster now (they were lagging last week with high numbers of thumbs). I improved the media search efficiency and added similar 'cancel' tech as I did to the db search last week, so it should now be fairly smooth and fast, even up to 10,000 files in view.
the rest
Just a note: system:size is now system:filesize.
Also, if you are a Linux user, or I have otherwise previously suggested you turn on the options->media->BUGFIX: Load images with PIL option, please check that option again this week and try turning it off. There was a time when PIL was more reliable than OpenCV--the other image library I use--but now things seem to be the other way around, and OpenCV is significantly faster too.
A user reported to me recently that he had an external hard drive he had hydrus installed to die due to overheating. It looks like it was related to heavy hydrus import folder work. This is the first time I have heard of something like this, but it still concerns me a lot. If you are running from a drive that can get similarly very hot, I strongly recommend you ensure you are not running any very heavy, hour-long-plus import or repository processing jobs on it. In the meantime, I will write some pause/throttle options for all the big routines to help users reduce load according to their situations.
full list
duplicates:
the duplicate filter now compares the pixel content of static image pairs of the same resolution--if they have the exact same pixels, a comparison statement is added, and if one file is a png and the other not (i.e. the png is likely a useless clipboard copy), the statement notes this and a strong duplicate score is applied
added 'system:is/is not best file of its group' to search for file kings
renamed 'system:num duplicate relationships' to 'system:num file relationships'
wrapped the two file relationship system predicates into one 'system:file relationships' stub predicate that opens to a dialog with two pred panels
added a 'add potential pairs' command to the thumbnail right-click file relationships menu, which will force-queue files for the duplicates filter
the duplicate filter now ensures the two medias' zoom is locked so they have the same width through a transition. furthermore, their current dragged top-left position is pinned in the same location. this ensures files that have slightly different resolution ratios (especially when they are just a couple of pixels off) still remain reasonably comparable when switching back and forth
reworked and simplified how position/drag delta is handled in the media canvas to support the above
fixed the 'custom action' button on the duplicate filter, which had no 'delete neither' choice and whose 'forget it' button cancelled the whole custom operation, making it impossible to custom action without deleting something. I have added a 'delete neither' green-text button to the front, as the default action
mr bones now reports on your potential, duplicate, and alternates numbers
.
tag autocomplete:
greatly sped up tag autocomplete search when fetching from a current media view (i.e. from thumbnails in the search page)--it had some CPU-inefficient testing/counting that mattered at high media/tag counts
greatly improved cancelability of tag autocomplete search when pulling from a current media view--this was resulting in high lag when typing fast with multi-thousand results
fixed the gui-level tag matching test to match namespaced search inputs with offset subtags (e.g. 'character:aran' now matches 'character:samus aran'), both for wildcard and specific namespaces
when typing an explicit wildcard tag search that does not end in a *, you will now be presented with two wildcard options--one with the implicit * suffix, one without
fixed 'write' tag autocomplete inputs (like in manage tags) being able to search for chunky 'namespace:*' explicit wildcard searches
.
the rest:
fixed the ipfs nocopy path translation control saving rows for client file paths outside of the main install path for non-Windows, where it was forgetting on save
renamed 'system:size' to 'system:filesize'
sped up some system:inbox searches
disabled a PIL 'load truncated images' backup mode, which on the current version can seemingly lead to infinite load hangs
file report mode now prints info when it deletes/recycles a path, including stack traces
fixed a long-running and silent 'port already running' bug related to setting services on the server that was stopping successful service-set-restart from the client in many situations. 'port is already running' checks that conflict with other processes will now give an immediate error to the client without saving any changes
the server now prints to the log as it stops/starts/has started its services
improved how the server can report certain 500 errors
the 'critical service tag/file reference' repository processing error has been improved: rather than reset the whole repository, it now pauses the repo and resets processing status for just the repo's 'definition' update files (without deleting any existing entries, so they should ultimately reprocess super fast) and also schedules a complete integrity and metadata check for all updated files
keyboard interrupts from the console should now trigger a clean exit request for the client
polite and forced shutdown requests when logging off should now trigger a fast exit (i.e. no yes/no dialog, no shutdown maintenance, but otherwise session saved and so on) for the client. this fast exit is noted in the log
moved the tag and rating service listctrls in duplicate merge options panel to the new listctrl object
moved the manage regex favourites listctrl to the new object
updated a bunch of yes/no dialogs to the new panel system
deleted some old unused dialog code and related unit tests
fixed up deletion-and-reimport file location handling for lingering media objects, which were not correctly forgetting combined local file deletion record on the reimport
improved shutdown error handling during repo processing
deleted the mishimmie default downloader
next week
The duplicates help, is the top thing. I need to draw some diagrams, take some new screenshots, and brush up the existing text to better explain the new system. After that, I will catch up on small jobs. I'd love to have multiple system:hash search added (for searching a bunch of md5s, say), maybe some subscription thumbnail publishing cleanup, and perhaps some Client API work, where I'd like to have web browser cookie import for easy login.
Once the duplicate work is done, I expect to do a little work on audio support, likely basic 'has audio' metadata for files, and then crash on some client/tag-repository & PTR overhaul.
