Thinking about how in The Horse and the Infant there’s a secondary beat that starts to play after he brings up Penelope and Telemachus, drops off once the other soldiers pick up in the background again (or becomes covered by the rest of the score and I can’t pick up on it as easily?) but then returns and stands out even more strongly against the rest of the music after he screams in pain and Zeus explains the vision. It drops off again while Odysseus is asking what threat an infant could pose, then comes back when Zeus is explaining he has to do this or his people will die/Ithaca will be in trouble (with another focus on Penelope) and it mimics the sound of a heartbeat

#epic the musical #personal #it mighttttt be present for the entire song and I just am unable to pick up on it due to the general strength of the instruments prior to #when the music softens for Penelope and then changes again for Zeus and his appearance #so if it IS in the entire song and I just can’t pick up on it that’s also incredibly neat since it shows his heartbeat in battle #but I /think/ it starts when he shows the vulnerability of longing for home?#it drops off or gets muffled when he starts to sing with the soldiers again #and comes back after he screams and #drops back off right before the music changes to introduce the baby?#I’ve listened to that like minute and a half stretch of song about 15 times trying to pick up the secondary beat so again I’m not sure #if it’s actually there or if my brain is filling in the beat for me since I’m trying to listen for it so many times in a row #and it goes bum. bum bum.#bum. bum bum. over and over #it REALLY just sounds like a heartbeat to me and it would make sense considering he’s singing about his wife and son #then in pain and urgency for the beginning of the vision introduction #UPDATE it comes back into focus again when Zeus is explaining why he has to kill the baby #so once again a huge sense of urgency and vulnerability there #will probably try to think about this more when it is not past 4:30 am #so I can listen for it in the symphony of other instruments and elements better
