The Leica M10 Review
…yes I know it’s 2020 and it’s late
This review was a long time coming since I had originally planned on writing this review last Spring. It was during that time when I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to pick up a second-hand Leica M10 in black from a fellow forum member in exchange for two of my lenses at the time (Summilux 35mm FLE and the Summicron 50mm V5). Was it worth selling my M240 at the time and trading off two lenses for the M10?
Before I continue with this review, I should caveat by saying that this is my second M10 as I sold the first one during the first draft of this review last year after my trip from Miami and Key West. I had sold it over the summer because I didn’t feel the premium wasn’t worth it to me, therefore I had sold it off and picked up a mint silver chrome M-P 240 which I loved and took it several trips with me.
Fast forward to 2020, an opportunity had come up for an M10 while I was at the gym one morning. I was catching up on Leica things during a break (as you do) and I had found a silver chrome M10 for sale for a price that was hard to pass up. A price so good, that I had completely stopped working out and went into full-time stalker mode with the seller on securing the purchase via text message. After less than 5 minutes of communicating back and forth, we had agreed on a price and a successful transaction was made.
I said farewell my beloved M-P (Typ 240) as it sold in less than a day to a gentleman in Texas. You were the best iteration of the best value digital Leica M camera, but how does the M10 compare and do I still think it was worth the money to upgrade?
My first Leica M10 in black
“Minute changes like these is what legendary products need. Nothing drastic, but incremental improvements.”
Introduction
When the M10 was first introduced in January 2017, it was a cause for celebration as reviews sang their praises as the ‘best Leica yet’ while commenting on its new 24 megapixel sensor paired with the latest Maestro II processor, a bigger viewfinder magnification with better eye-relief, a body that is as slim as the M7 film camera, a new manual ISO dial and what is this?
They’ve removed video recording!
Nobody cared. Moving on.
Not only did Leica giveth and taketh away with the M10, but they had also made the camera significantly more simplified compared to its predecessor. Leica’s new devotion to minimalism that could be seen back in 2015 with the introduction of the Leica Q, transferred over to the M10 as the camera now has less buttons, removed any superfluous menu options which led to a more structured and cleaner menu system. They even changed the power switch so that it only does one thing now: On or Off. This is a big deal as the Leica Q had a problem with some users accidentally switching to “Continuous” as the power switch had the tendency to go full-auto. Minute changes like these is what legendary products need. Nothing drastic, but incremental improvements.
Look at every new iteration of the the Porsche 911. It’s not the same car, but just improved.
As the difference in technology between the M240 (2012) and the M10 (2017) span 5 years, the improvements of the M10 can be noticed instantly with its new slimmer profile when you pick it up for the first time. While the M240 wasn’t a big camera compared to other full-frame cameras, but if you compared Leica’s other rangefinders, the M240 was a thicc boy. After a few weeks of getting reacquainted with the M10 again, I felt that the M10 is just like any other Leica: it’s more than the sum of its parts and more about its evolution rather than revolution. That’s why, at least currently, it’s the best digital iteration of Leica’s fabled rangefinder (until the M11).

“…it’s more than the sum of its parts and more about its evolution rather than revolution.”
Build & Design
The M10’s new slimmer body and lighter weight compared to the M240 was very obvious and noticeable to me. As your right thumb rub against the right corner of the body next to the exposure dial, you’ll also notice the new paint finish as Leica had decided to use matte/chrome treated paint compared to the previous “black paint” finish in the previous gens. I personally prefer the black paint finish as the lacquer paint would fade over time, showing the dull gold glow of the brass underneath. This brassing gave the camera a nice patina, like a worn leather jacket after years of use.
Brassing on a Leica M240
I believe that Leica did this intentionally to give the camera a more timeless look as the brassing would give the camera an aged look over time, but I feel that the patina brings out the character of the camera. With each worn paint on different parts of the body, there is a story that comes with it. The new chrome paint finish will not age as gracefully, as it will just dull over the time, losing its matte luster to just a shiny sheen of metal.

Tough as Nails
Just because the M10 doesn’t brass like its predecessors, doesn’t the camera feels cheap. The components are still machined from solid brass and magnesium alloy chassis, holding in all the components in such a small body. Nothing about the build quality is different with the M10 and they are still built to same high standards. Don’t let the smaller size of the M10 fool you either as the weight between the M240 and the M10 are almost identical (1.46 lbs vs. 1.50 lbs).
Width: 33.7mm
Weight: 1.46 lbs
Leica may not openly advertise this, but the body is weather-sealed against light precipitation and dust.
Refined Shutter
The shutter sound is definitely quieter and more refined than the M240, but the feel is about the same. Half press locks the exposure and full press releases the shutter with a refined “click”. I can’t explain the sound, but it feels slightly muffled compared to the M240. It’s definitely quieter than the M9’s robo-sex doll shutter cock sound, but I kind of like that as that’s part of the M9’s many charms.
I can’t speak for the shutter feel on the M10-P or M10-D as I don’t have any experience with them yet, but they have the quietest mechanical curtain shutters. Maybe one day I’ll pick one up (actually I know I’ll have one in the future).
Diamonds are Forever
Most of the back panel is dominated by a 3-inch TFT LCD monitor which has 1,036,800 dots and can display 16 million colors in addition to providing 100% frame coverage during live view. The difference in resolution between the M240 and the M10 may not be noticeable, at least to me, but the difference in contrast is very apparent. It’s also years ahead of the M9, which is only useful for checking exposure as it has the same screen quality of a GameBoy.
The LCD glass screen itself deserves its own paragraph as it’s sporting the latest Gorilla Glass, specifically developed for this camera by Corning. While the glass feel strong and strudy, I personally question its durability compared to the Leica M-P’s (Typ 240) more robust and exotic sapphire glass. Something that Leica had also omitted from the M10-P and M10-D. This is a big difference as sapphire glass is borderline industructible by conventional means, which is why it’s used on high-end watches that can only be scratched by diamonds. I wouldn’t be surprised if the M10’s screen is very similar to the Leica Q.
Balanced
Lastly, the body feels more balanced due to better weight distribution between the front and rear of the body if you hold the camera up by just the strap with a lens attached. This is one of the major benefits of the M10’s slimmer body as it pairs perfectly with compact lenses like the Summicron 35mm ASPH or the Voigtlander Ultron 35mm. This may not seem like a big deal, but weight distribution is counts if you want to pull some weight off your left hand, relieving some pressure off your fingers as you focus.

“…body is weather-sealed against light precipitation and dust”
User Experience
There is something to be said about the user experience of a thinner, faster, and more accurate Leica rangefinder, especially with its improved eye relief for people with glasses. Compared to the M240, there are some noticeable improvements.
Pin-Point Accuracy
The new viewfinder has a magnification of .73x compared to the M240’s .68x magnification. This may not seem much, but that is a big difference when you’re looking inside a tiny window and you’ll notice it right away when you’re focusing your lenses. It’s much easier to nail a sharp focus and with fast lenses, this is a big improvement. By just walking around with the Voigtlander Ultron 35/1.7 ASPH I had at the time, I noticed that I was nailing focus with very little to no micro-adjustments to get a sharp focus patch. That means there is one less thing to worry about on getting a sharp focus. The second one being the quality of your eye sight to see the patch clearly.
This new viewfinder can also be a double-edged sword for those that wear glasses as composing with 28mm or 36mm lenses will have a more difficult time to compose since the eye-relief, while is improved, it’s still not ideal for glasses.

Simplified Menu System
Leica had released a firmware update in 2018, which introduced the Favorites Menu that was brought over from the Leica Q. A very handy upgrade since it no longer required you to dive into the 2.5 pages of menus to change something as simple as White Balance. These are mostly quality of life improvements and once you set up your menu settings, you will very rarely ever go back in terms of shooting experience as I have everything that I need on the body of the camera: ISO, Aperture, Shutter. The dials feels solid and tactile, as you would expect from a Leica.
Carry Spares
The battery life will be a hit for people as the Leica M10’s BP-SCL5  battery has 1300 mAh of charge, which is noticeably smaller than the M240’s 1600 mAh battery. The difference of 300 mAh may not seem much and you should be able to hit 300 photos on one battery if you don’t use Live View (or EVF), but this is a far cry from the M240’s BP-SCL2 battery as a single one of those guys would last me all weekend.
Thumbs Up
The exposure compensation dial is just where it needs to be like the M240, but the Leica M10 has a slight curvature on the left side of the dial that acts as a pseduo thumb rest. Doesn’t seem like much, but it makes a noticeable difference in ergonomics, especially on a slimmer body like the M10. I still ended up buying a OEM Leica thumb grip and I recommend it wholeheartedly as we all know that Leica cameras were built for Lego people.
Controls at your finger tips
“…you will very rarely ever go back in terms of shooting experience as I have everything that I need on the body of the camera.”
Big Brains
The MAESTRO II processor is quick and depending on the Read/Write speed of your SD card, it’s as quick as the Leica Q on writing those DNG files. It’s capable of taking 5 shots per second on continuous which is impressive for a M camera.
Wi-Fi is Lo-Fi
The built-in Wi-Fi feature is nice to have, but I doubt I’ll ever use it as my dedicated source of raw transfers since I prefer to use the SD card to transfer photos via iPad Pro or on the PC. The app itself is cumbersome and the transfer speeds are abysmally slow. To make matter worse, using the Wi-Fi feature absolutely destroys your battery life.

“…thumbs up grip is crazy expensive at $240 a pop”
Things I Don’t Like
Despite all these improvements, not everything is perfect with the M10. This may be the best digital Leica M camera to date, but there are a couple of issues I want to point out as they were noticeable that prevented the camera from winning over me completely.
Double Thumbs
The buttons on the back are big and easy to use, but it will take some time to get used to getting around the menu system if you’re coming from the M240…especially when you want to delete a photo.
You first have to press the “PLAY” button, which is one of the three primary buttons on the back, then press “MENU” to bring up the delete option since there is no dedicated delete button anymore. Then once you do that, you have to use the center button on the D-Pad to confirm your choice (what would be the INFO button on the M240). It’s not very intuitive but neither was the M240’s use of the “SET” button on the left. This is a minor issue as you’ll get use to it after a couple of days.
That ISO Dial
The new ISO dial on the left of side of the camera was one of the defining features of the M10 and while it is nice to have, I personally think it’s highly overrated. To change the ISO, you need to lift the switch up to unlock it (which surprisingly takes a bit of effort with your left fingers) and then turn the dial to your desired ISO settings, then press the dial back down until it snaps in to lock the ISO dial. I’m not of fan of this effort of using the ISO dial and practically impossible with gloves on.
I personally leave the dial unlocked and upright position while I’m shooting without the fear of accidentally bumping the dial to the wrong settings since theres enough resistance to stay in place. The constant adjustments to the ISO dial will require you to alter your grip a lot when it’s in locked position.
Also, good luck using the ISO dial in the dark as you can’t see anything. At least on the previous M240, you could easily manipulate the ISO on the LCD screen while turning the exposure compensation dial.
Overall, I think they just should have made the dial more tactile to reduce the chance of accidentally bumping the dial, a la Fujifilm X-Pro3. It’s a cool feature but I hated using it and I promise you that this feature will either be revised or removed in the next generation Leica M11 body.
The Options List
This should come to no surprise to anyone as Leica anything is expensive, but I want to point out that the accessories for the Leica M10 are noticeably more expensive than the M240. Par for the course, but here is the breakdown in costs for my recommended accessories.
Leica Thumb Grip – $240
Leica BP-SCL5 Batteries – $190 (however, cheaper than the M240 batteries)
Periscope
This is a WTF moment for me and for those that need GPS coordinates baked into their DNG files. If you want this feature, it’s only available if you use the optional Leica Visoflex EVF which costs a cool $600, which is odd to me. I never used or cared about this feature but it made me raise an eyebrow.
Image Quality
It’s strange to categorize the quality of the image output from a camera body, so I guess you can call this part the sensor’s characteristics.
The overall fidelity and tonality produced by the Leica M10 is excellent and while it may not win any DXO scores because Leica couldn’t give a shit about winning sensor awards, the overall output is absolutely beautiful. This is also very dependent on the type of glass you put in front of the sensor, but to keep things consistent, I’ve used both the 35mm and 50mm Summicron lenses to get a good reading on how the M10 likes to paint its pictures.
The M10’s DNG files have noticeable bump in saturation, and contrast straight out of camera when you upload them into Lightroom. Compared to the DNG files from the Leica Q, the output from the M10 is consistently more “colorful” with a hint of warmer tones. Another underrated improvement over its predecessor is the the white balance. How the M10 figures out its white balance is a big improvement as it is definitely more accurate compared to the M240’s yellowish tint.
The dynamic range is actually pretty good based on my experience in Lightroom. You can pull several stops on both highlights and shadows without destroying the file, and it should be satisfactory as long as you don’t expect Sony levels of dynamic range.
This doesn’t mean that you should be lazy on setting your exposure before taking the photo because a good baseline photo in RAW is much more preferable than trying to salvage your mistakes in post. A good rule of thumb is to underexpose my photos just a little bit to save the highlights during your tricky in/out lighting situations.
Expose for those highlights
This photo was heavily underexposed but the dynamic range headroom on the M10 allowed me to pull up the shadows while maintaining micro-contrast. The windows are actually looking inside the factory floor with the flood lights and not actually looking outside.
In Summary
What Leica had done here was to take a successful formula and make minor improvements to an already successful camera, but doing this also risked alienating fans. This is a known problem with any manufacturer that have a rabid fanbase with a long history (a la Porsche 911). When Leica developed the M10, it took some risks with some of these changes, but it’s easy to see that Leica went back to what they were very good and just made improvements to their existing core strengths. They understood who their base customers were and listened. It simplified the camera to its basics (it has three menu buttons for crying out loud) and took video out. While most DSLR and Mirrorless photographers will laugh at the idea of taking stuff out but charging the same price (if not more) for such a “low-tech” camera, this is not what Leica is about.
They cater to the niche and not the masses – something they’ve been doing for a long time and longer than any manufacturer.
M10 vs. M240
Now, some of you on the fence of purchasing a Leica M10 may be asking yourself if this camera was worth the upgrade over the M240?
Yes and No. Let me explain.
I came from a background of owning the following Leica cameras chronologically.
Leica M9 (Black),
Leica M9 (Steel Gray),
Leica M240 (Silver),
Leica M10 (Black),
Leica M-P 240 (Silver),
Leica M10 (Silver).
So I’ve been around the block and back and I feel as though I have some experience on this topic and for the most part, I would say no, it’s not worth the upgrade in my opinion. While the M10’s improvements are tangible, I don’t feel as though the incremental improvements are worth the premium. For example…
While the ISO dial is great, M240 owners can just as easily change their settings using the rear LCD and rear dial.
The improved viewfinder is wonderful and the magnification is great, but if you shoot between 35mm-50mm lenses, you won’t really notice it too much.
The battery life is worse on the M10.
The M240 is thicker than the M10, but I don’t think you’ll notice the difference when you’re out in the real world taking photos, especially if you use a thumb grip for both.
The improved LCD screen is nice, but I never looked at the M240’s screen and thought it was crap in 2020.
ISO Performance – if you’re not Batman and prowl the street at night often and don’t shoot a lot in low light, this is hard to justify.
This is how I feel after owning the two cameras (twice) back to back, but it’s ultimately up to you if you feel that it’s worth it to you. Otherwise, the M10 is the best digital M camera that you can get right now. With the predictable upgrades without changing the primary formula of what made the Leica M so great, it makes you wonder what the future holds for the next Leica M as we’re going to be due for an upgrade in 2022.

HOW IDEOLOGY MASQUERADES AS IMPARTIAL ECONOMIC ANALYSIS
Tumblr media
Editor’s note: Nobel Prize winning economist Paul Samuelson has been hugely influential in promoting his views from the day he published his economics textbook in 1948. He also penned a regular column in Newsweek magazine for fifteen years during the 1960’s.  Little wonder then, that Samuelson has been referred to by one economic historian as the “Father of Modern Economics.” Samuelson’s book is now in its 19th printing and has sold nearly four million copies in over forty languages. Generations of students, economic scholars, business men, and government officials have grown up with few counterpoint views of what makes the economy tick. Yet, Samuelson’s belief that it is best for government to social engineer our society is still a prevalent view. He has, in fact, stated that “America spends too little rather than too much on government.” Samuelson’s ideological lens was simply too clouded to consider alternate views. Economist, Robert Nelson, after a thorough study of Samuelson’s work has concluded that “If economists have in the end been priests of a secular religion, the ‘theology’ of economics was particularly well expressed in [Samuelson’s textbook] Economics.”
It is a rare economist who doesn’t wear a mask of ideology. And, it is ideology that drives what the American lay public (and many who are otherwise sophisticated about business and finance) presumes is apolitical, clinical, and neutral economic analysis rendered for the betterment of our society. Alas, such is not the case as ideology is the predicate for much of what we understand to be dispassionate economic analysis. Ideology comes in many forms: as academic arrogance, institutional bias, or political partisanship. Maybe all of this makes sense if we view economics as more of a political ideology than an objective science. Still, Americans must be aware of the masquerade. As the noted Economics journalist Henry Hazlitt stated in his book, Economics in One Lesson, “Economics is haunted by more fallacies than any other study known to man. This is no accident. The inherent difficulties of the subject would be great enough…but they are multiplied a thousandfold by … the selfish pleading of selfish interests.”
The “can’t fail” models of Myron Scholes and Robert Merton, Nobel Prize winning economists both, were the centerpiece of the hedge fund they, with others, founded as Long Term Capital Management (LTCM) in 1994. The founders’ notoriety was based on the mathematical work they did, along with Fisher Black, to value the theoretical price of derivatives (the so-called Black-Scholes model). Big investment banks among them Merrill Lynch and UBS went for the bait with minimum $10 million investments. At the end of August 1997, the firm sported a capital base of $6.7 billion and the firm was rocking. Scarcely a year later, however, following the collapse of the Russian economy, LTCM was left with an almost worthless portfolio of assets. The firm, whose self-assessed risk of failure, had been calculated to be near zero had to be bailed out by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York in league with fifteen banks as a way to avoid a contagion of the financial markets.
Some economic models are so narrowly framed (never mind that they lack empirical verifiability) that their applicability has little or no value in a real-world context. The founders’ own post-mortem after the LTCM collapse was that their data base had not gone back far enough to pick up all historical market perturbations. So, their mathematical pyrotechnics were one-of-a-kind but their common sense was nil. Still, there is a bumper crop of economists, notwithstanding the debacle that was LTCM, whose elegant equations are believed by many to speak to science and truth in explaining some real-world phenomenon. Worse, once a certain celebrity is achieved by the PhD economist doing the theorizing or the modeling, especially when abetted by a compliant academic or popular press, if not a Nobel committee, then the individual is venerated for his sagacity in areas far afield from his narrow-gauge expertise. This makes a burlesque of the field of economics and it should be seen as such by all Americans.
“THE CENTRAL PROBLEM OF DEPRESSION PREVENTION HAS BEEN SOLVED…”
The caption heading above was a prognostication voiced by the 1995 Nobel Prize winning economist Robert Lucas. In 2003, in his presidential address to the American Economic Association, Lucas further added that the problem, “…has in fact been solved for many decades.” Then, as if to double down on his incantation, in the aftermath of the Lehman Brothers collapse, Lucas stated he was skeptical that the economy would slip into recession or that the subprime mortgage crisis was of any more general consequence. “If we have learned anything from the past 20 years,” said Lucas, “it is that there is a lot of stability built into the real economy.”
Eugene Fama, the Nobel Laureate in Economics in 2013 is the father of the efficient-market hypothesis. The hypothesis essentially argues that it is impossible to beat the market as all of the information that is available about a stock is already baked into the price. In essence, Fama was saying that stock picking was a dart throw. So far so good except that if you take Fama’s hypothesis to heart there is no place for regulations of any kind. How could there be when everything you need to know about a stock is already known? Fama’s influence was profound. It was no coincidence that in late 2000 Congress passed the Commodity Futures Modernization Act which, for all practical purposes, deregulated derivatives and credit default swaps. Brooksley Born, a non-economist and Chairwoman of the Commodity Trading Futures Commission at the time warned of the dangers posed by the unregulated market. She was summarily slapped down, however, by Larry Summers, Secretary of the Treasury and by his mentor, the almost universally deified, Federal Reserve Chairman, Alan Greenspan. Neither one of these men saw fit to rein in the gunslingers on Wall Street. Predictably, when credit markets froze in 2008 forcing the collapse of firms such as Bear Stearns, American International Group, and Lehman Brothers it was a direct result of a failure to regulate the derivatives market. At that point, the notional or face value of derivatives swirling around in the market was $683 trillion.
When asked if his efficient market hypothesis applied to housing, Fama went on to explain that: “Housing markets are less liquid, but people are very careful when they buy houses. It’s typically the biggest investment they’re going to make, so they look around very carefully and they compare prices. The bidding process is very detailed.” Fama, the brilliant economist, obviously failed to incorporate the human factor into his equations. As we have noted in a separate essay, The Service Ethic: The Ultimate Guarantor Against Moral Hazards, everyone from home buyers, to mortgage brokers, to mortgage underwriters, to regulators, to credit-rating agencies, to the Federal Reserve all had a hand in the subprime mortgage meltdown of 2007. So much, for Fama’s efficient-market hypothesis.
David Lereah, chief economist for the National Association of Realtors, in 2005 published the awkwardly titled, Are You Missing the Real Estate Boom? The Boom Will Not Bust and Why Property Values Will Continue to Climb through the End of the Decade – And How to Profit from Them. Lereah, as others before him, was lionized by the media and his message became both ubiquitous and indisputable.
To be fair, not every economist failed to read the housing market tea leaves. Two are noteworthy:
Robert Shiller. An economist who didn’t drink the Kool-Aid was a Nobel Laureate with Eugene Fama and Lars Peter Hansen in 2013. Shiller argued of irrational markets – not of efficient ones as his co-Nobel Prize winner Eugene Fama argued – and warned of a housing crash in 2006. Amazingly, Shiller also warned of a tech bubble just before the dot com fiasco.
Raghuram Rajan. A professor at the University of Chicago and a former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India as well as Chief Economist at the International Monetary Fund is credited for his prescience, when in 2005 he warned about the growing risks in financial markets. For his insight, Rajan was called a Luddite and his warnings “misguided” by Larry Summers.
“TEN THOUSAND WILL DIE PER YEAR DUE TO TAX REFORM”
British economist Lionel Robbins famously stated that the job of the economist is to report what is and not what ought to be.
It is fair to say, however, that economists then and now have failed to heed that lesson (or have chosen to ignore it) and thus theorize, not necessarily in accordance with the facts, but in accordance with their own political worldview and predispositions.
Larry Summers  did more than denigrate Raghuram Rajan as a modern-day Luddite.  While in a position of great influence and power during the 2008 meltdown Summers argued against a cram down that would have allowed the courts to force banks to reduce mortgage balances, cut interest rates or lengthen loan amortizations that would have helped millions of homeowners. Sadly, Summers’ signal policy achievement while in Washington was the aforementioned disaster known as the Commodity Futures Modernization Act. Long after the damage was done, President Clinton lamented that he had received the wrong advice from Summers in not regulating derivatives.
Summers is now on his high horse as an “intellectual” anti-Trump activist. When Summers proffered that ten thousand people would die as a result of the President’s tax reform package his rationale was couched in so many “what-ifs” as to be meaningless. And, when he told CNN that the tax plan will make “middle class Americans poorer” he demonstrated that he is pseudoscientific as well as incapable of rising above petty political jealousies. Summers is not alone, however, as a contemporary big mouth and wrong-headed economist.
“WE ARE LOOKING AT A GLOBAL RECESSION…”
Nobel Prize winning economist Paul Krugman is not to be outdone for his caustic partisanship. In the aftermath of President Trump’s election Krugman assured his readers at the New York Times that the world’s stock markets would never recover. The election of such an “irresponsible, ignorant man,” said Krugman, would bring about the “the mother of all adverse effects” on the economy. “So, we are very probably looking at a global recession, with no end in sight.” That is hardly an intelligent economic observation so much as it is unbridled animus toward the President.
The numbers, ruefully for Krugman and his acolytes, tell a different story from his apocalyptic view. During President Trump’s Administration Gross Domestic Product  exceeded 3% and the unemployment rate dropped to levels not seen in decades. Consumer confidence, too, rose to historically high levels. The stock market added over $5 trillion in wealth. And, the number of Americans receiving employee bonuses, pay hikes, and increases in benefits was in excess of 2,000,000.  Bumps in capital spending, and charitable contributions were also announced by companies in reaction to President Trump’s December, 2017 tax reform: AT&T, for one, announced plans to spend an additional $1 billion in capital spending in 2018; Comcast, also indicated it would spend $5 billion over the next five years; and Wells Fargo announced that it would pump $400 million into community chests in 2018.
It is clear that Krugman’s bias is such that he would rather engineer the economy according to his predilections than simply study it and objectively report on it. His mantra has been for years that America’s apparent economic success is due to the fact that “…our rich are much richer.” So much for the analytical prowess of a Nobel Laureate: a man whose ideology prompts an answer before a question has even been asked.
The Nobel committee’s vetting of Krugman’s work in economic geography was sloppy if not politically motivated. The field, including the mathematical elegance that is ascribed to Krugman, goes back for decades. What is worse, Krugman gives scant credit to those who preceded him. That is shameful.
Mathematical economist J. Barkley Rosser Jr., Professor of Economics at James Madison University, who has reviewed Krugman’s work has cited all of the previous relevant work which Krugman purposely ignored. Rosser concludes his review by stating that “if [Krugman] is indeed the emperor of the new economic geography, then he is an emperor who has no clothes.”
Other economists are more forthright about their social engineering biases. Economist Robert J. Gordon, notable among them, lays the nation’s lack of productivity growth at the feet of social factors such as the inequality between the haves and the have nots which he proposes to correct. Among the nostrums he points out in his book, The Rise and Fall of American Growth, are the following: drug legalization, incarceration reform to include shorter sentencing guidelines and aggressive pardoning of people behind bars, raising the minimum wage, increasing the Earned Income Tax Credit, introducing “super bracket” tax rates for high income earners, relaxing patent and copyright laws, spending more for education, and reducing occupational licensing requirements.
That the nation’s prosperity might have been eroded through decades of government overreach, imprudent fiscal policies, sleight-of-hand monetary policies, high taxes on corporations and individuals, a vast tangle of regulations, the decay of law and order, and an assault on individual liberties seems not to have occurred to these social engineers who masquerade as objective economists.
AN INFLUENTIAL PROFESSION WITHOUT AN ETHICAL COMPASS
Do economists have a code of ethics that ensures they won’t dissemble, parse the facts, or reveal their personal biases when conducting their analyses? No, says Martha Starr, Professor of Economics at American University. As editor of the book Consequences of Economic Downturn: Beyond the Usual Economics, Professor Starr states that “Unlike almost any academic profession – statisticians, physicists, sociologists, you name it – economists have always opposed adopting an ethical code outlining how they should act.”
Professor Starr goes on to say that “A well written code of conduct could make people think hard before, for instance, accepting $135,000 in speaker’s fees from an investment bank, then giving that investment bank privileged access to the White House.” This, an obvious reference to the payment made by investment bank Goldman Sachs to White House economic adviser Larry Summers in 2008.
As I suggested at the outset, it is possible that economists can’t help but show their prejudices because economics is not a science after all. When the public interest is at stake – as it often is in the hands of macroeconomists especially – then empirical evidence and not ideology should guide the work of economists. Regardless, economists will never win the public trust unless and until they abide a professional code of ethics.

With not being able to travel this summer, my husband and I have been doing a lot of backyard living to escape our home offices. Our outdoor living space really came along way since we moved in! (I’ll post a “before” photo at the end of the post.) I’ve been working on making this a more inviting space all summer long and thought I could share the process and a few tips to create your own comfortable patio area.
I also realize we’re not the only ones who are spending A LOT more time at home right now. So, for my blog anniversary this year, I’m going to be hosting a gift card giveaway to Wayfair, so you can update your home decor too. Be sure to check back to my blog on Friday to enter to win!
Backyard Living: 5 Steps for Creating a Cozy Outdoor Living Space
1.) Find Comfortable Seating
Of course, the most important part of creating a comfortable outdoor living area is to find some comfortable outdoor seating. There are so many options on Wayfair it’s almost overwhelming. Whether you have a small outdoor space, or it’s going to be your second living room… I’m confident you’ll find something on Wayfair! (And don’t worry they’re not sponsoring this post or anything – I just really like that site!)
I had started shopping for our furniture in early May – which is the worst time of year to do so (especially THIS year). Everything I wanted was sold out! I ended up finding this 9 piece set on Wayfair for a very fair price, given its quality and how comfortable it is. I waited until it came back in stock in mid-June and hit that order button so hard!
Initially, I was a little nervous about ordering furniture online… I order everything else online, but furniture is one of those things that’s a little hard to take back if you don’t end up liking it! But given the options I was seeing in the stores by us (and the prices – yikes!), I went for it… and I am so glad I did. This set is fantastic and about $1,000 less than everything I was seeing in stores by us!
Pro tip: if you order furniture from Wayfair be sure to also purchase their protection plan. My mom has been ordering furniture from Wayfair for years and using her plan. She has told me repeatedly it’s worth the money.
This egg chair I also found at the At Home store near where I live. (There is a similar chair back in stock on Wayfair for a similar price.) I had been looking for a swing chair at first, but I landed on this one because it was so much more comfortable than the others! I love the way swing chairs look, but I haven’t found one yet that I feel totally comfortable hanging out in. And our white bench was actually made by my father-in-law, Greg – he’s incredibly talented!
Pro tip: If you order your furniture online, be sure to have a sharp box cutter and a way to dispose of the cardboard/plastic it will come wrapped in. I recommend the skeletool KBX knife by Leatherman – it’s a handy little pocket knife to have for daily activities.
2.) Get a Few Pillows, Blankets, Rugs
Small touches, such as outdoor pillows, a couple blankets and a rug can really elevate your backyard living setup! I also went a little crazy and got a couple pouf ottomans. It makes the space feel more “homey” and inviting.
My husband thought this was all a waste of money initially (who needs pillows outside?! and those ottomans are going to get so dirty!). However, he’s changed his tune on this one! He uses the pillows and blankets more than I do, and I’ve managed to keep my ottomans from getting dirty so far! (Heck, we’ve even been taking naps out here – it’s great!)
Proof that pillows, ottomans and blankets were a good idea!
All of the poufs, pillows and the rug that I have are from the At Home store near where I live. As crazy as it may sound, Amazon also has a great selection of outdoor pillows for similar prices as what I was seeing in stores. (My blankets I had ordered from Amazon too.)
3.) PLANTS – GET ALL THE GREEN PLANTS!!!
As you can see, I have quite a few plants…and frankly, I think I need more! (I want a jungle out here!) Usually, when it comes to decor, I’m all for “less is more.” However, when it comes to living plants… more is more. They add so much life and visual interest to an area. They’ve also been proven to reduce stress and improve your overall mood! These are things you want in your personal outdoor oasis.
Now, a lot of these plants are ones I had inside our home this winter. I just moved them outside once the weather warmed up. I did end up buying 4 Boston ferns specifically to hang out here. (I ended up ordering them online too from the National Plant Network because by the time I realized I wanted them, every single store by us was sold out of them.)

I also ordered a few air plants off Amazon for far more reasonable prices than I was seeing in stores! That big Xerographica air plant was less than half the price on Amazon as it was in stores!
4.) Put Up Some Additional Lighting
Whether this is hanging string lights, getting outdoor decorative lanterns or ground solar lights – having lighting outside can really set the mood for your backyard living space!
This is something that I  struggled with for no apparent reason. If you’re especially observant, you’ll notice that I don’t have the same string lights in each photo. I had tried some inexpensive solar string lights from Walmart… but they didn’t work at all! So, I just returned them and instead went right back to Amazon and ordered the set I have now (they are fantastic FYI, and my mom has the same ones too).
#gallery-0-14 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-14 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-14 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-14 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
I also set out some decorative lanterns and citronella candles.
5.) Decorate With Unique Pieces of Decor That You Love
Find some fun little pieces of decor for conversations pieces around your patio. Whether it’s interesting plants, rocks, knick-knacks, candles – you name it! Find something that makes you happy and can help spark a conversation when you’re entertaining.
These llama planters filled with  Xerographica air plants have really been a hit with everyone!
Next step: Bar Cart!
For me, the next step is putting together a bar cart to keep our drinks handy and to have something to easily bring food and snacks out. I haven’t quite found what I’m looking for yet, but that will be added to this list next!
Shop my patio:

Rug: At Home in Appleton, WI (Similar here)
Pillows: At Home in Appleton, WI (Similar here)

I’m happy to answer any questions anyone has in the comments section at the end of the post! And don’t forget, I’ll be hosting a Wayfair gift card giveaway for my blogiversary this Friday – stay tuned!

Motorcycle insurance?
"Motorcycle insurance?
Actually, could you also give me a rough estimate of how much I would expect to spend on gas in a month(full time job, as well as all around vehicle),  and registration, liscense etc.  Essentially, I need a estimate of how much it would be to own and maintain a motorcycle per month.  Obviously the answers are gonna be rough guesses, but thats ok.   Thanks :)

Question about Car Insurance? This is crazy!?
I have a question about car insurance. I was recently shopping around for quotes for car insurance. I had gotten an email about Washington Mutual Car Insurance, so I decided to get a quote. I was astounded when they quoted me with $2500 every 6 months or $5,000 a year. I was just completely blown away. My car, a 2004 Nissan Sentra, is barely even worth that much. I called them up and asked why they were quoting me that rate and they said it was because of my age and credit score. I am only 23 and I have really bad credit, but there is NO OTHER insurance company that quoted me a rate anything near as high as that. Progressive quoted me $600 every 6 months or $1200 a year. Geico $613 every 6 months or $1200 a year. Allstate was $1,200 every 6 months or $2,400 a year. And State Farm was $800 every 6 months, $1600 a year. These quotes were all for identical insurance policies. I have never been in an accident, never been arrested, never been given a ticket for ANYTHING. Does age and credit score make that much of a difference? That is insane, no one in their right mind would pay the full value of their car every year in insurance fees. What do you think?""
Insurance coverage with DUI involved?

""Already expensive and soaring prices for the US health care, what can be done?""
Many folks just like you living either in Europe or Canada are paying much less in health care than us Americans. It was just a week ago I went to shop for dentist. In four different dentists each dentist give me a different quote, different prices when ALL of the services where the same. Something is wrong in this picture. I came to ask myself are doctors putting their own price tags on their services since they are NOT regulated. This is NOT about Democrat or Republican or any politics, it is a community asset that needs to be provided for the community in affordable prices like anybody else living outside the US. The notion that it is expensive in the US because of better services and top quality medicine is simply a hoax, because ALL MEDICATIONS contain the same ingredients, but different brand names. This is where government NEEDS to step in, and make sure nobody open up a business and put up their own price tags. Pharmacuetical companies may have spent MILLIONS to research and produce medicine but that should NOT all PAID by the consumers. Why should a patient pay for a money that is somehow added to your medical bills and medicine price because of pharmaceuticals research?. When it comes to college tuition and health care, everyone should put politics a side and draw a line between Capitalism and community assets. We elect our officials to provide us, secure us, and work for us, and when folks who only see making profit are more influential and more powerful than our elected officials than something must be done in here. Drugs made by US manufactures are sold to other countries for less than Americans can buy them. If nothing is done in here, I WILL DO SOMETHING, good or bad. Just to get results different than what we have today. Join me.""

Determining how much car insurance will rise after an accident?

Last company auto renewed my policy but i wasnt aware of this as had moved address, so to cancel it I had to pay 133 as id already started going with someone else on top of the initial deposit amount i had to pay for both companies which has took a large chunk of my money for what i feel was no fault of mine, then a month later im getting letters from my current insurance asking me to pay an extra 90 plus 25 admin fee or my policy will be cancelled AGAIN meaning a cancellation fee because when i said i had held my licence for 8 years they recon its 7 ive held it for and this makes my policy go up, thing is i got my licence on 22/08/2003 and took my poliocy out on the 19/08/2011 so they're making out when i took out the policy i only had licence for 7 years for sake of 2 days who the hell wouldnt have said 8 to that? it just seems theyre trying everything now days trawling through all your stuff finding the smallest detail just so they can get money off you or cancellation fees cos that way they're not risking anything on insurance but still gettin money off you for cancellation fees its a joke and I can really see why people think there's no point having insurance anymore. Plus I have never made a claim since I started driving but because others have in the country im being punished with premiums going up. Will it just end up where everyone who simply cant afford it thinks sod it and drives round with no insurance? surely that would make things even worse but all these cancellation fees if it happens again that I have to cancel that will be 550 ive paid in the last 2 months and still my car wont have insurance????? arghhhhh its doing my head in surely something can be done to help the customers a little more as insurance was always a headache but this is becoming ridiculous now. ..""

Car insurance denied claim because they cannot contact its insured.?
Hi. On April first, my neighbor hit my dad's car in our neighborhood. Our garages are facing each other, and my dad was going backwards to get out of our garage. He was already in the street and he was ready to go in his way. Suddenly, our neighbor back out from her garage very fast and hit the driver door of my car. She didn't stay in that position, she moved and my dad did the same. The white bumper of her van had no visible damages, but my door needs to be replaced. Also, there is white paint in car in the place she hit it. We asked for her insurance, but she didn't have it in that moment. We wrote the plate number and took some quick pictures. I called my insurance to report the accident. In the night, when she returned home, we asked for her insurance, but she refused. We called the police and she agreed to give us her insurance information. In fact, she wrote the information herself. I called her insurance(Geico) the next day, and she had already made a claim, and she only said she didn't hit my car; she didn't give more details. My dad gave his version of the accident with a lot of details, but she didn't do it. Her Insurance tried to contact her, but there is no answer from her. I see her everyday, so I am sure is not responding on purpose. Now, her insurance called me and told me that because she is not responding, there is no way to confirm she was involved in the accident. therefore, they denied liability. I was shocked because they took that decision only because they cannot contact her. They didn't came to take pictures of the place or the cars. So, I tell them I was going to send the pictures I took. I did send the pictures but now, the adjuster is not in his office, and he will be back next week on Thursday. Right now, I don't know what to do, I could pay for the reparation of my car, but I don't believe that's fair. Please, if someone can guide me with this case. What can I do?""

First Drive: 2019 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid
MONTPELLIER, France — Not all that far from our hotel was the University of Montpellier, founded in 1289, which you would think has given the U of M about 729 years to decide on a suitable sports mascot, but that does not seem to be the case.
Indeed, some things are hard to predict, even for one of the University of Montpellier’s notable students, Nostradamus, the visionary who probably knew in advance when he enrolled in the school in 1529 that he would soon be expelled once the University learned he had worked as an apothecary, or pharmacist, which was frowned upon then.
The clairvoyant Nostradamus would, of course, go on to foresee many global events, the vast majority open to interpretation, including the French Revolution, Adolph Hitler, the Apollo moon landing, multiple plagues, earthquakes, wars, floods, and Miley Cyrus.
But just as important are those events that Nostradamus failed to predict, including:
In 1999, Porsche announced it would build a sport utility vehicle.
In 2002, The New York Times suggested the “Cayenne,” as the SUV would be called, was causing much peeing of pants among Porsche loyalists, one reason being that the SUV resembled “a stretched and swollen Boxster,” the reporter wrote.
In 2003, the Cayenne went on sale, and the world did not end.
In 2011, half the vehicles Porsche sold in the U.S. were Cayennes.
In 2018, Porsche introduced the 2019 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid to journalists. In Montpellier. Just to rub Nostradamus’ nose in his oversight.
In 2020, the award-winning (in 2013) University of Montpellier’s girls’ soccer team will be known as “the Montpellier Cayennes.” Or not.
And while much history is contained in the past 275 words, we’ve told you precious little about the 2019 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid, which is much more fun than a capsule description of it—another V-6 SUV hybrid—might suggest. As it has since 2003 with the Cayenne, Porsche consistently exceeds expectations, and does so again.
Yes, the Cayenne E-Hybrid has a V-6, the twin-scroll turbocharged 3.0-liter from the base Cayenne that pumps out a respectable 335 horsepower, and 332 lb-ft of torque. But the plug-in hybrid model gets a boost from a surprisingly compact electric motor, located next to the eight-speed Tiptronic S transmission, making the grand total output a sobering 455 horsepower, with 516 lb-ft.
Those numbers are impressive, but while there’s an undeniable increase in power, it doesn’t really work like, say, a 455-hp V-8. This is indeed one of those vehicles in which, following a moment of inattention on the highway, you look down at its speedometer and go, “Crap!” The amount of power on tap, plus the eager transmission, moves the two-and-a-half-ton sport-ute along briskly and quietly, but it’s less invigorating than you might imagine. You want invigorating, buy the new Porsche Cayenne Turbo with 541 hp.
Of course, the Cayenne Turbo starts at $125,650, while the Cayenne E-Hybrid starts at $80,950, which—dollar for horsepower—is pretty reasonable. That’s with a very long list of standard equipment, but as anyone who has priced a Porsche—any Porsche—knows, options are available. Lots and lots of options.
Standard stuff includes (surprisingly) the Sport Chrono package; leather-trimmed seats; a 10-speaker, 150-watt sound system; the Porsche Communication Management system; front and rear park assist; and airbags aplenty. If you want an exterior color other than black or white, add $800.
Standard wheels are 19-inchers—we’d prefer the 21-inch tires and wheels that were on all our test Cayennes, though expect to pay for them—an extra $4,000 and up, as they come with body-colored wheel arch extensions. The standard 19-inch wheel is a reasonably handsome five-spoke design; it doesn’t look bad if you prefer to save the cash. Porsche’s website doesn’t list available 22-inch tires and wheels, but company executives say they will offer such a package.
Porsche’s active all-wheel-drive is standard, but off-roading was not a part of the press preview program. We did a bit of unauthorized dirt-roading on our own, and while the amount of ground clearance doesn’t encourage it, the Cayenne E-Hybrid should be fine for mild cow trailing. Any more than that, we’d definitely opt for the stainless steel front and rear skid plates ($1,560).
That said, Porsche didn’t encourage us to go drag racing, either, but with a (manufacturer’s suggested) 0 to 60 mph time of 4.7 seconds, a quarter-mile time of 13.3 seconds, and a top speed of 157 mph, we probably could have done that, too.
As far as the “E-Mobility” equipment, everything is standard except for a 7.2 kW onboard charger, which adds $840. The massaging seats ($2,000) were of great interest, but they aren’t yet available. Night vision assist ($2,420) and a head-up display ($1,720) would be nice, but if you are just interested in adding performance, Porsche’s Dynamic Chassis Control is worth the $3,590—but if you want that, you’ll have to get the adaptive air suspension for $2,170, too.
Active rear axle steering may be worth $1,620, especially if you do a lot of parking in tight spots. An extra $660 gets you the towing package, and with a towing capacity of a whopping 7,700 pounds, it’s worth it.
Of course, we’ve barely mentioned the fact this is indeed a plug-in hybrid. There are four separate driving modes: EV, or electric only; H, a hybrid automatic setting that lets the engine kick in as needed; and Sport and Sport Plus—those last two have the V-6 engine running all the time.
Porsche showed us a bare chassis, and it’s amazing how little space the 14.1-kWh battery pack takes up, sitting beneath the seemingly uncompromised rear luggage floor. Porsche doesn’t have an EPA rating yet, but a European test suggests pure electric power will last about 27 miles, with an all-electric top speed of 83 mph. Porsche doesn’t have EPA numbers on the base Cayenne with this V-6 engine, so we can’t even make an educated guess as to the E-Hybrid’s numbers based on that. The EPA rated the 2018 Cayenne S E-Hybrid at 47 mpg-e combined city/highway, and 22 mpg combined city/highway on gasoline.
The battery should recharge in about 2.3 hours with a 230-volt, 32-amp outlet and the aforementioned optional 7.2-kW onboard charger. Expect it to take 7.8 hours with a 230-volt/10-amp outlet and the standard 3.6-kW charger. The plug-in outlet is behind a flap on the driver’s-side rear fender; there’s an identical flap on the passenger side for gasoline.
On the road, this is about as seamless as hybrids get. The regenerative braking system, as it often does, results in an odd pedal feel, but the more you drive it, the less it annoys you. Steering feel could use a little work, though.
On the mostly smooth roads around Montpellier, the Cayenne’s ride was supple, never punishing on even the roughest pavement we encountered. On tight turns, the 5,060-pound E-Hybrid—that’s 683 pounds heavier than the base Cayenne—seemed a little under-tired.
Inside, the E-Hybrid has just the right amount of electro-information; it doesn’t club you over the head with pointed suggestions that you are wasting energy, but you can monitor how you are doing. The instrument panel is modern and viewer-friendly, and the big, mostly horizontal center screen is an effective focal point for the rest of the dashboard. This is an easy vehicle to get comfortable with, something we haven’t always been able to say about Porsches. Even without the massage function, front seats are comfortable and supportive, with room in the back for three actual adults.
Outside, this third-generation Cayenne is the most handsome of the three, looking nothing at all like the “stretched and swollen Boxster” that so offended The New York Times 16 years ago. We’ll let you decide how the “acid green” (Porsche’s term; it’s sort of a sickly lime) brake calipers look, but they do at least match the acid-green backing on emblems inside, outside, and even under the hood of the car, a lone highlight on a big black plate of plastic.
Porsche is mum on sales projections, but it doesn’t take Nostradamus to predict the 2019 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid should do quite well. It goes on sale later this year, with deliveries expected early in 2019.

Soy Protein Isolate Maltodextrin High Oleic Sunflower Oil Isomaltose Canola Oil Rice Starch Soy Lecithin Biotin Oat Fiber Isomaltooligosaccharide Artificial Flavors Potassium Iodide Dipotassium Phosphate Gellan Gum Vitamin B12

SOYLENT QUALITY OF INGREDIENTS
The formula relies on many added vitamins and minerals, some gelling agents a bit of sugar, fats, and a protein source which is all soy based.
Their ready to drink formula comes in at 400 calories per 414 ml bottle, which is a significant amount of calories. Some weight loss shakes have only around 100 calories and they offer hours of appetite suppression.
Furthermore there is a total of 9 grams of sugar which is also high, as other brands have only 1 gram per serving.
While the 20 grams of protein is high, it is all soy based which for some people may not be suitable. Soy is known to be one of the most GMO produced crops, and in some it can lead to an increase of estrogen hormones.
The fiber is decent at 3 grams of serving but it would had been better had it had a bit more. Meanwhile the vitamin and mineral profile is rich.
Overall it’s a decent formula but for those looking to lose weight it may not be the best solution, the calories and sugar is far too high. Click this link to see the top 10 meal replacement shakes which customers and our review experts have rated highly.
THE PRICE AND QUALITY OF SOYLENT
You can buy both Soylent Powder and a ready to drink version. Their ready to drink is offered at 14 ounces per bottle with 12 bottles sold for $34. This breaks down to $2.83 per bottle.
A Soylent trial or reoccurring month to month plan is offered for a slightly reduced cost as well.
Determining if Soylent good for you is difficult since it does have many important vitamins and minerals, but they also rely on many unnecessary additives, a high amount of calories, and high sugar.

People had to at time call the company to see where their deliver was, only to learn it was shipped to the incorrect address. Some also said that their automatic subscription was reactivated even though they were sure to cancel it.
The company has also had a history of issues. 3 different recalls were had due to contaminations and an increase of people experiencing gastrointestinal side effects. A study on the product saw that the company had elevated levels of lead and cadmium, which can be toxic over time. Because of this concern they now feature the California Proposition 65 warning, which states that the product may have a risk for genetic or birth defects.

CONCLUSION – IS SOYLENT GOOD FOR LOSING WEIGHT?
Soylent is described as a ultimate source of nutrition and while it does have many important nutrients, it may not be what people are looking for if weight loss is the goal.
