Happy birthday to the number one princess in the world!! 💖
~from her biggest fans :)
ramble of my scattered thoughts on the piece under cut as usual cuz i love talking 😋
This has been an idea I've been cookin for a while, and it was so cluttered and unlike any other ensemble piece I've made... and I decided I oughta do it anyway. I love Miku, I love Vocaloid, and I wanted to do something really ambitious and crazy for her anniversary. Crazy that she's turning her "canon" age this year TwT
I had the idea floating around since like, May...? And then finally started acting on it around June 18. I'm terrible with deadlines, obvious with how I can never make a silly birthday post in time, so I started wayyyy ahead to make sure I have some room to be lazy lol, especially with an idea as ambitious as this.
This was finished on July 12! So I had to sit on this for an annoying amount of time. Very difficult for someone like me who just wants to talk about everything I'm working on to the masses. But at the very least, that gave me the time to work on the draft for this post.
~~~
Here's some ~behind the scenes~ scribbles leading up to the finished piece!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Left is the chicken scratch plan i made in my handy dandy notebook (whenever things are getting real and ambitious, i always made a rough ROUGH plan in there. Usually I'd do a rough pass of the full thing, but this was too complicated for me to do traditionally. I majorly benefited from digital tools to make this possible). CyberDiva and CyberSongman were considered, but I ended up cutting them cuz I just didn't feel like drawing them sorry-- (just pretend they're off to the side. They gave Ruby and Clara the pizza lol). Right is the "final" completed sketch (before I decided to include Chika mid-way through coloring and VY1 and VY2 near the finish line). I started by drawing the main "groups" separated on a different canvas so I can plop them into the main canvas for easy rearranging and transforming. However I got lazy and ended up drawing everyone in the bottom right corner directly on the canvas since I liked seeing the big picture of everyone's positions. Y'know.
Almost excluded Chika! But I like her design so much that I just felt like including her last-minute. You win this time, Chika fans. VY1 and VY2 were very close to being cut! I added them when I began doing the banner and thought "eh why not". I figured their non-human designs would be pretty easy to include pushed back in the bg. Ik VY1 is more commonly associated with the fan design, but I referenced the hairpin cuz it was simpler and the fan looked very annoying to draw 😭
Sorry to the fans of many Vocaloids I had to cut because this composition was insane enough as is. I promise I wanted to include fellas like CUL, LUMi and Sachiko 😭 I will admit I was a little biased on who I wanted to include over others. Like, I don't normally care for Bruno and Clara, but I wanted to get some more international 'loids in the mix. Also wanted to stick in the realm of official designs and not fan-designs since, as much as I can appreciate those, are just a whole "wait who is that guy supposed to be" situation I didn't wanna deal with. I also did wanna include even more character references through the balloons, but they ended up being kind of ugly and overcomplicated the BG :,) (Oh, and while this was originally planned to be a Vocaloid-only piece, I did end up including Teto, Neru, and Haku 'cuz those are Miku's besties dude!!! They may not be Officially in the club but they're her girls and it would be criminal to not invite them to her birthday).
Anyway, this project marks the first time I've drawn a lot of Vocaloids. Lily, Piko, Rana, Yuki, Yukari, Miki, Maika, and many more lol. All of 'em I've heard or seen in passing, but now I actually drew them, and some have really cool and fun designs!! I got into a habit of drawing Merli after this since I just love her design for example. And I'll probably be drawing more lol!!
Oh and the last thing I'll add for now!! The cake is indeed made up of various song references!! I wanted to reference the "big four" producers, just absolute icons in Vocaloid history. The pink/black checkerboard is "World is Mine" (Ryo), the crescents on the side is "Rolling Girl" (Wowaka), the smiley faces is "Matryoshka" (Hachi), and the three hearts on the side is "The Vampire" (DECO*27, which is sort of a symbol of his whole Mannequin album tbh). I know "The Vampire" is a bit modern but I couldn't think of anything else off the top of my head. I'm a fake DECO fan I know 😔 "Matryoshka" was originally going to be referenced in the colors of the candles but believe me it looked like shit so I just went for something else last minute 😭
That's all I have to say!!! Hope you didn't mind the text wall if you made it here. I hope you like it as much as I do!!!! Happy freakin' birthday Miku!!!!
I have to deal with tagging all these characters now for my page,,, in the drafts my tags got cut off after a certain point so I think I'm massively breaching the tag limit 😭 um... I'll figure that out later...
not losing sleep that i can't tag everyone, even for page organization purposes because some characters have pretty generic names and some are a little hard to see in full yknow. If you're one of those people who tag every character in the art piece you reblog... I am very sorry.
Translation of Tatsuya Endo's Interview with Katsumaru: (You can read the original here X)
Katsumaru: My wife and child are both big fans of "Spy x Family", so they were both excited for me to be able to meet you today. Why did you choose the theme "Spy" in the first place?
Endo: I didn't have any particular desire to draw a spy story or something like that, but I had always liked military kinds of things and was interested in war related things, so when I combined those aspects with the theme of "lies", it naturally ended up as a spy story. However, I haven't seen many spy movies, and for movies like "007", I've only seen one or two of them.
Katsumaru: What? Really? The information about spies that appears in the story, even for someone like me who's been an avid follower of the genre, gives an impression that it's very well thought out. How on earth did you acquire such knowledge?
Endo: Most of it is from books. And then some of it is from documentary films and the likes. There was an old movie called "Shiri" (This is a 1999 Korean film), it's about the battle between North Korean Special Operation Forces and South Korean Intelligence Agency. I liked that very much.
Katsumaru: The setting, in which the husband, Loid, is a spy and the wife, Yor, is an assassin, reminded me of the movie "Mr & Mrs Smith"
Endo: When the series was just starting, I see that title being mentioned a lot in the comments, but to be honest I've never seen it before....(Laughs). I didn't have much time to prepare for the serialization, and since it's a comedy, I thought I didn't have to be that particular about the settings as I drew it. I incorporated the knowledge I had gained from books, but since it's still a manga, I kept the "No way, that's impossible" aspects to it.
Katsumaru: I think it has a really good balance between realistic depiction and entertainment. Spies are part of everyday life, and some of them even established a "fake family" as in "SPY X FAMILY". In reality, there are cases where married couples had been living together without realizing that their husbands are spies.
Endo: That balance is what I pay the most attention to. I guess you can say it's a process of determining the "minimum level of reality" in each scene.
Katsumaru: How concerned are you about the difference between "reality and manga", Endo-sensei?
Endo: This one is difficult. It's a case by case basis, but in manga, there are many parts where I can just go "let's fake the reality at this part for the time being". When you're working alone, you don't have time to do research about this or that fact. However, in anime, you have to create much more detailed settings, so there isn't much room to put on tricks. When the anime team would ask me "What would happen in this part?" I would often reply with "I'm sorry but I haven't thought about it yet...." (Laughs).
Katsumaru: Have you not strictly defined the scene or time period the story is set in yet?
Endo: I had the image of the period setting somewhere between the 1960s and 1970s. I'm trying to explore what I can do with the technologies in this era thinking "This technology might be possible". I also have softened the reality of things, such as the political form. The cold war between the East and West is also part of the motif, but if you just tell the readers that "it's a conflict of ideologies" , it won't make sense to them. So, I put it into a form that is easy to understand as a manga, there are also some parts that I, myself don't know about after all. Similarly, in the real world, for example, spies probably have very few horizontal connections, right? Like for security reasons. However, as a manga, in order to develop the story, it was necessary for me to depict conversations between spies. All the more that this is a comedy story, so it wouldn't work without conversation. It's difficult to find the right flavor between the two.
Katsumaru: It's pretty unique that you came up with the name "Dalc" which is similar to the name of the currency "Mark" (It's Deutsche Mark which is no longer in use since 2002) used in Germany.
Endo: It's actually a combination of "Mark" and "Dollar". I often use names of places and buildings that actually exist in real life. However, I have a pretty bad memory, so I often ask myself later "Where did I get the name of this place again?" (Laughs)
Katsumaru: Is there any expert historical research or supervision of intelligence agencies involved in this?
Endo: I basically think about all the detailed settings all by myself.
Katsumaru: Since the real-life aspects are well-constructed, I thought an expert in international politics was involved in supervising this.
Endo: There are also some readers who read too deep into the historical situation, but I didn't actually put much thought into the details in writing the story. This is just a fictional country called "Westalis and Ostania" after all.
Katsumaru: In "Spy x Family", there are some Russian-speaking names such as "Anya" and "Yuri" that appears, but spies in that country uses more analog method. For example, "flash contact", in which documents are handed over to another person as they pass each other, or a "drop dead", in which documents are hidden in an agreed-upon location and later picked up by a colleague. There is also a method for communication. Although this method is considered extremely inefficient, it is sometimes considered to be highly secure because it prevents interception of communications.
Endo: So there's still that kind of analogs even now huh? Now that technology has developed and everything is digitalized, I certainly think it's much safer now. In other countries, there are organization such as M16 (United Kingdom Secret Intelligence Service) and CIA (US Central Intelligence Agency), Japan also has organizations with such characteristics.
Katsumaru: The "Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department Public Security Bureau (Public Safety)", where I worked, is the counterintelligence arm of Japan. In "VIVANT" (It's a 2023 Japanese Drama), which I supervised, Hiroshi Abe and Ryo Ryusei are playing roles with these type of characters. We have obtained as collaborators people who have a lot of information and people who are in position to meet various people such as reporter.
The only problem was that we didn't have enough people. The CIA has a large number of subordinates under it's station chief, and a large budget. When I was temporary transfered to a Japanese embassy overseas, I was alone, my budget was limited, and I was also reponsible for issuing passports, so there is no doubt that working at an intelligence agency overseas with better environment had allowed me to concentrate more on my mission.
Endo: Do you hire locals overseas?
Katsumaru: There are times when we ask locals to work with us by paying them a reward. Or, we can ask them to connect us with people who has information. The Public Safety is very good at finding and training people who can bring good quality information and can do good work.
Translating Endo's comments Part 3
Part 1
Part 2
Q1: What does Endo sensei want to do the most rn?
A: I want to take a break. I want to be alone in nature.
Tumblr media
Q2: Why is your self portrait the moon?
A: I kind of like it. Because it is a "yin'' attribute in human terms. My dream for the future is to go to the moon.
Tumblr media
Q3: Are there any characters who are similar to you? In what ways are they similar?
A: Probably Loid? Perfectionist, stubborn, and inflexible.
Q4: How do you relieve your fatigue from work?
Tumblr media
A: How can I do that?
Q5: If you suddenly got Anya's ability to "read minds" one day, what would be the first thing you would do?
A: I would like to sit next to Yoshihiro Togashi drawing the names and trace his thoughts when coming up with the story and moving the characters.
Q6: If you were to become a spy, what kind of mission would you like to undertake?
A casual mission that can be easily completed once a week without being exposed to danger or taking on too much responsibility.
Tumblr media
Q7: Do you have any routine?
There's no particular timing when it's time to start... The only things I do while working are turning on the TV, playing music, and drinking a latte. When it comes to my name, I usually go to a cafe or family restaurant to work.
Q8:Do you have any other works that you were addicted to when you were little? Besides the often mentioned "From Today I Am!!'', please let me know.
A: Almost all the major Jump works such as "Dragon Ball'', "SLAMDUNK'', and "Yu Yu Hakusho''. Other than that, I like "YAIBA'' and "Dragon Quest 4 Panel Manga Theater.'' I don't think I watched much anime when I was little.
Tumblr media
Q9: All characters are very fashionable but do you use anything for reference
A: I research online "Fashion O'share".
Tumblr media
Q10: What's fun for you to draw rn?
A: It's fun to draw names for comedy parts because you can draw them easily. Stories where characters like Anya, Bond, and Yuri, who are driven solely by emotion, do unreasonable things. On the other hand, serious feature scenes are difficult in many ways.lllll
Loving
a.n.: loid forger x reader.
t.w.: smut, oral sex, unprotected sex, daddy kink (ahhhh this is my first time writing this please be nice!), spanking, anal play, swearing. minors, do not interact.
s.n.: Twilight learns how to love by loving you.
Bite marks on your thighs already claimed their place between your legs where a golden crown lay; strong arms kept you pinned down like an unfolded flower where the sweet nectar he had dreamed of for weeks pooled between your soft pink petals.
He was given the long weekend off of work to visit where you lived: a quaint cottage secretly tucked away in the countryside. This was his attempt at keeping you away from the affliction of war he worked hard to keep from spreading like pestilence of disease.
The only symptom of sickness you felt was the constant dull ache of missing him, your protector, currently claiming your body as his own while your shyness kept your face hidden in the juncture of your elbow,
“You’re getting good at this,”
You felt him hum across your clit before giving it a wet kiss with tongue, drawing a sharp inhale then sigh from your lips.
“Was I ever bad at it?”
His question more of a statement of confidence: Twilight took pride in his work, honing his craft in espionage over and over— even if he knew of his own accolades he strove to be the best.
However…
To actually feel and learn from lived-in experiences of what human emotion and intimacy could be proved more difficult than any mission.
Fortunately, he had you: his best friend, lover, and teacher—patient and kind to his curiosity and lesson in loving. He recounted his first frustrations of feeling want for the first time, how difficult it was for him to sort out the words to his feelings and to speak his needs truthfully to you as a man and lover.
“No,” you sighed, raking fingers through the side of his undercut to his soft blonde hair, “Maybe it’s just been awhile…”
“Then I need to make up for lost time,”
An adorable blush dusted his rosy cheeks, peaking through when he tilted his head to catch a glimpse of you from between your legs, ocean green eyes keeping a focus on your arched form while hands kept your lips spread by his palms. he slipped two fingers inside of you with ease of how wet he made you, curling them over the very place he knew would drive you over the edge every time.
“I know every inch of your body…” he dragged those words up to your navel then through the valley of your breasts with his lips, kisses that spread goosebumps over your skin like wildfire.
“I know this is how you liked to be kissed,” he slid his tongue across your bottom lip before slipping into your mouth, the lingering taste of yourself on his lips even when he pulls back.
“I’ve studied you more than any target,” he moved up to the crook of your neck biting down only enough to make your head spin and left you only able to whisper his name before his lips met yours.
Following a whisper your name, he was taken by surprise when you were the one to push and twist him to be underneath, tangled in each others on the floor ontop of a large rug by the fireplace, the fire he made beforehand radiating like the heat growing passionately between your bodies. He was tangled in the crinkle of the white bedsheet you had pulled from the bed prior, the sculpted lines and edges of his body dipped each time he exhaled.
His broad chest rose and fell sharply when you straddled his waist, pressing down with both hands on his belly with keen eyes following your next move.
“You’re blushing,” simple words teased the spy as his body spoke for itself, his member already flushed, swelled, and leaked down the tip with crystal beads of precum.
“You’re so beautiful,” hungry lips reached for yours but found resistance from your hands firmly keeping him underneath you. He pouted, tapping your hips with his hands impatiently while furrowed brows while you waited, using the silence to pull another answer from him.
“And maybe my most dangerous mission, too…”
Laughter was an unexpected response and it tinted his cheeks more, feeling vulnerable and under your spell.
“Me? Dangerous?” you laughed softly, cupping his cheek briefly before caressing the side of his face,
“For a spy, you seem to be so willing to tell the truth…”
While he was stuck between the duality of his truthfulness and secrecy you trailed slow kisses and soft bites across his neck to his collarbones, peppering the delicate cage for his beating heart, bones that looked as if they could soar against the strong muscles of his neck and shoulders.
Before a smirk could form on his perfect face he felt you sink down around him, feeling causing him to roll his head back into the pillows and groan, golden hair a ruffled mess from the sex the two of you were having.
“god—“
Watching you could leave himself in a spiral for days, paying reverence to the goddess above him; the way you moved around him, the fire flickering warm lights and shadows across your belly and breasts which rolled and bounced after every grind to meet his groin, leaving it in a sheen of your essence, the curve of your ass slapping against his skin was the song of his worship.
His long, thick cock pressing itself between your walls feeling full as you continue to fucking him. He couldn't hold back any longer, moaning when he arches his hips up to meet yours. his face was twisted in pleasure until he realized that your lips betrayed you, moaning something he didn’t expect would cross your mind without looking both ways.
“Daddy—“
Conquered by your overwhelming desire to be claimed by this man you were fucking, you were lost in euphoria to even realize what you let slip from a dark corner of your mind.
“What did you just call me?”
Your movements came to a sudden halt, your heart could burst at any moment from embarrassment, hiding your face away by craning it to the side while a growing smirk appeared on his face.
“Did you just call me daddy?”
“I-” you stammered, heart racing. '“um—“
You suddenly felt the faux rug pressed up against your face, him using the opportunity to flip you over and onto your stomach, practically dragging you by your hips to pull your ass up, coating himself in your slick between folds before lining up and snapping back into place while you cried out his name.
“Does my girl like the way her daddy fucks her?”
His voice melted lust into your ear, feeling his abdomen press into your back as a hand reaches over to squeeze the sides of your neck. You couldn’t see his expression but his presence wanted to swallow you whole: feeling him pull out slowly only to thrust back with such force that had you whining into the rug with each push.
“Do you know how long I’ve been waiting to hear you call me that?” You shudder while he drags his nails across your back until they return to your hips, feeling a slap across one of your asscheeks while slipping in his thumb into your ass before plunging it against your tight hole.
“Yes daddy, please—“
His thrusts eventually stagger and while you find your release around his cock, his body breaks above you soon after, caving on top of yours while his release fills you up, whispering an I love you while blooming a heat inside of you that made sure you knew you belonged to him.
Coming down from sex was spent quietly in each other’s embrace, the cottage settling back into silence, the occasional crackles from the fireplace and tree branches tapping outside on the window sills could be heard. You opened your eyes when you heard him clear his throat, looking up to see a maddening blush had erupt over his face.
“Sweetheart?” He peaked through blonde lashes, grabbing one of your hands to rub the top of.
“Did I hurt you? Was I too rough? Please tell me-“
You hugged his waist, pressed a kiss into his cheek while you sweetly chuckled into the crook of his neck.
“My Twilight,” you sighed his codename endearingly,
“I love you, loving me.”
your personal top (10?) manga? :))
Hello!!!
I am going to preface this with the fact that I only got into anime around 2014/2015 (Fullmetal Alchemist + Brotherhood) and then read the manga around 2016.
I only started avidly reading around 2019 with digital copies of JoJo and fell into loving manga from there and genuinely becoming a reader/keeping up with new releases and starting to learn Japanese (basic hiragana, etc) in 2021.
My other qualifications for these picks are that I am an irl artist (illustration and stained glass), taught an art history course for 1 year, and I read/write as much as possible outside of work.
I will also say that I may not have finished reading all these series yet, but they are the ones near and dear to my art-loving heart.
Also sorry it’s a few more than 10 *sweats*
Tumblr media
Fullmetal Alchemist — Hiromu Arakawa
My very first manga.
Knowing that Arakawa taught herself art while still working on her parents’ farm and used her nights/time off to write it made me so in awe of her drive and skills. The ways the story deals with humanity, war, power, and love make it a timeless classic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure — Hirohiko Araki
It’s bonkers. It’s off the wall. It’s been going since the 80’s and Araki is still working. There’s so much to love. There’s so much to hate. But no matter how you feel about JJBA, it’s undeniably a masterpiece.
Araki’s dedication to the art is one of the biggest draws, with his fashion and art history references and use of bright colors. You can feel his love for the medium shine through his full color pieces!
My personal favorite parts are Phantom Blood, Diamond Is Unbreakable, Stone Ocean, and Jojolion (ikik all the “boring” parts, but I think that’s where the characters are most interesting)
Tumblr media
Jujutsu Kaisen -- Gege Akutami
My next big read after JoJo. After watching season 1 of the anime, I knew I needed more. The way that Gege uses the classic shonen tropes combined with explorations of life and death is very strong storytelling.
We learn from the start about curses, cursed energy, we witness a major death in the protagonist’s life and he’s given a goal:
“You’re a strong kid, so help others. Even if it’s only those closest to you, just save the people you can. It’s okay if you lose your way, and don’t worry about whether they’ll thank you or not. Just save as many people as you can, even if it’s only one.”
The series often shows us what it means to save even one and the self sacrifice that comes from protecting others, even if it’s painful or difficult. Throw iconic characters into the mix and you have the basis for an already notable classic shonen manga.
Tumblr media
Spy x Family — Tatsuya Endo
Found family slice of life with a big dose of action and fluff?? Literally the perfect comfort manga. I saw enough promos on tumblr that I finally caved and started it in 2020 and I LOVED it.
More people are familiar now bc of the anime’s popularity, but I definitely recommend reading it as well! The art is consistently high quality, the face expressions are hilarious, and the main concept of fighting for peace is re-stated throughout the storyline.
Loid took on this mission and his spy position to bring peace. He never wants to see the horrors of war again. He never wants to see another child cry. The family may be “fake” but the feelings are real.
Tumblr media
Witch Hat Atelier — Kamome Shirahama
I cannot stop giving high praises for this series!!!! It’s like if you mixed Ghibli’s nature and art with Narnia or LOTR’s fantasy vibes. The magic system is based on drawing and it’s such a treat for artists to read.
Shirahama also uses a lot of traditional art references for her work, like rococo, art nouveau, classic illustration, etc. She’s won awards for the series and every one is deserved.
Also the two main witches, Qifrey and Olruggio, are definitely in love and take the best care of their witch students (cough daughters) in the atelier. Qifrey is like if you mixed Howl Pendragon with Gojo Satoru. Olruggio is the traditional tsundere with a heart of gold.
The series also talks a lot about disability and how we can improve others’ lives to make them more comfortable and accessible! It’s a very unique world and story that draws you in and makes you feel at home.
Tumblr media
Chainsaw Man — Tatsuki Fujimoto
Yes, the series everyone is currently talking about. And I’m not going to call it peak or goat, but I think the concept is very strong and well-executed.
Fujimoto pulls you in from the intro (esp Pochita, how can you not love a cute little chainsaw dog!?), he makes you care about the characters, and slowly rips your heart out chapter by chapter. It’s won awards for good reason.
Not everyone is morally black and white. There’s giant battles and dynamic art. The main character just wants to touch some boobs. The other main guy is basically a househusband after work hours. Add in a pretty girl blood devil who doesn’t like vegetables. An Angel Devil who can kill someone through a touch and loves ice cream. A sopping wet kitten of a girl who works at her family’s burger place and hunts devils on the side. etc etc.
The characters are one of the strongest aspects of Chainsaw Man and their dynamics with each other. Hate, love, control, fear… The series talks about our basest desires and anxieties and explores them in a fictional playing field with all the flare you expect from a Shonen Jump title.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Toilet Bound Hanako Kun - AidaIro
THE ART STYLE THE ART STYLE THE ART STLYE. This series is done by a two person team (AidaIro - one for art, one for writing) and I appreciate that each brings their strength to this manga.
The coloring and art are so dreamy and whimsical, while still using strong jewel tone colors (instead of only pastels or earth colors as you might expect in a western fantasy series).
The work uses the “seven school wonders” as its base and Nene Yashiro as the protagonist who just wanted to get a date with her crush and called on Hanako’s help. Through her impulsivity, she ends up under a mermaid’s curse and makes a pact with Hakano to make it more bearable, getting pulled into the carryings-on of spirits around the school.
The art/story combo is engaging, dynamic, and emotional. There’s a lot of hilarious face expressions in this manga as well and little visual gags/jokes that make it fun to read. The series started in 2014 and is still ongoing!
Tumblr media
The Way of the Househusband — Kosuke Oono
a former yakuza member marries a designer and becomes a stay at home househusband. Hijinks ensue. Add in his former gang friend Masa and their cat Gin and you have a recipe for domestic comedy.
I’ve genuinely laughed out loud so many times reading this manga. The chapters are pretty short and are good when you need a little break to not stare at a screen. It’s another good comfort manga when you need something low intensity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dorohedoro -- Q Hayashida
I have to admit I found this one because of the anime MAPPA did, but I immediately explored the manga and mud and sludge art book. Q Hayashida trained in fine arts before becoming a mangaka and it shows through the quality of her work.
From the heavily detailed manga panels, to the mixed media covers, and bonus comics done in color, the world is rendered in a blend of gritty realism and surreal fantasy.
Dorohedoro is one of the most unique pieces of worldbuilding I’ve encountered, with the smoke magic system, use of doors for traveling between Hole and the sorcerers world, as well as including devils in the lore.
Again, characters are a big draw of the series, but the art is just mind blowing to me as an artist, knowing the level of craft she put into them. I still flip through the artbook for inspiration when I’m feeling drained.
I haven’t finished all of the manga, but I’m slowly collecting the volumes (some are out of print). But I believe all the pdfs are up on archive.org (also please keep in mind there is an Adult Only/18+ content warning on this manga as there is gore and some nudity)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Blue Period — Tsubasa Yamaguchi
I started collecting this when they released volume 1 and just kept collecting. If you’re an artist at all or appreciate art, this is a series for you. It describes the struggles of finding your voice as an artist so deeply and you will feel understood and seen.
There are quite a few characters in the series, so I suggest looking at the wiki for this one to keep everyone straight. I also recommend watching the anime, as the colors and voices help distinguish the characters further.
The art history references in the chapter art makes this a scavenger hunt for art nerds and the messages of self searching, acceptance, and discovery are something anyone can relate to. (edit: I looked up the series more and it's another woman author!! :D )
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Case Study of Vanitas — Jun Mochizuki
Another I started collecting because of the anime, but it’s SO so beautiful (Arakawa sensei even gave a recommendation inside the front cover of volume 1!)
Also!!! Another woman author!! I’m so happy to give lots of women author recs. If you like gothic romantic vampire dramas set in alt history steampunk Paris with a dash of horror, then this is for you.
Bisexual vibes from literally all of the main 4 (Noe, Vanitas, Dominique, Jeanne). Some moments of sensuality, but it never goes into overtly sexual, making it more accessible for teen readers.
Her watercolors are instantly recognizable and stunningly gorgeous. Noe’s delight in the world is balanced by Vanitas’ grumpier realism. Also, the concept of a vampire that can read memories through blood blew my mind. Definitely recommend.
Special mentions:
Tumblr media
Yotsuba&! (a classic first manga for kids. Heartwarming. Funny. Adorable)
Tumblr media
Skull Face Bookseller Honda-san (also a good anime. Only 4 volumes. All the crazy things that happen in a bookstore/publishing. Funny and a great autobiography by the author Honda)
Tumblr media
Kaiju No. 8 (an up and coming Shonen Jump that’s already slated for an anime!!!! Kaiju battle action + a 32 year old protag that had an accident while working and can now turn into a Kaiju >:D Monster lovers rejoice)
I also have a few singles of older shojo manga that I’m getting into recently like Cardcaptor Sakura, Sailor Moon, Kitchen Princess, Host Club!
glad we share an opinion queen!! also getting annoyed because of 4 year old acting like a 4 year old is incredibly valid to me tbh definitely had my own share of yup definitely no chlidren for me ever moments. I feel like later on it gets a little better because now we are focusing more on Kazuki and Rei's past and issues each of them brings to the table lmao I usually have issue only when people claim Miri isn't at all acting like an actual 4 year old and compare her to... Anya... a child who can literally read minds 😐 and will change her behaviour accordingly to what she hears as we have seen her do many times before and I didn't even watch all of spy x family like sir surely you are joking right now?? anyways I hope you are doing well, it's been a while ^_^ what are you up to these days? hope uni isn't giving you too much of a hard time!
(formerly) QQQQQNFFFFFF ENJOYYEEEERRR!!!! AGNESSS!!! It's so good to hear form you <3
If there's one thing I'm reliant at its being a bit of a hater to kids antics, I simply lack the gift of patience. I am right there with you in those moments I'm ngl. Okay the focus on more of their past dynamic and potentially how they got to be in the profession they're in sounds pretty interesting. The potential for angst skyrockets with each word I hear about this show and I am loving it.
That is,,,, a real unique comparison people have made. As someone who has suffered through two seasons of spyxfamily I can definitely vouch that Anya and Miri are not similar characters at all (To clarify spy family was good up until every progression the characters had was wrote away for a cheap punchline or coincidental memory loss, literally happened every second episode after s1 ep9). The only similarity between the two shows point blank is the premise. I would assume people are trying to draw nonexistent parallels purely based off of that, I have no idea as to why though. From what I saw (so, so little) Miri was undoubtedly acting like a four year old, when she spilt that drink in episode 2 it was very on brand kid looking for attention, I thought it showed her age pretty well. Anya as an older character, literally six years old, but she had a lot more motives at play. Obviously she's still young and immature but a lot more mature than Miri nonetheless. Anya could play strategy and was attempting to aid Loid with his spy missions, I'm going to go out on a limb and assume Miri is not going to locate a bomb or something in the remaining 10 eps I have to watch. Miri seems to be a much more honest and open character whereas Anya can be more scheming and conniving (I say with love, I did like Anya's character up until everyone minus Yor became very dislikable very fast), for her own self preservation. The two of them are pretty incomparable, I can see where your disbelief is coming from.
Uni is making me spin in a circle five times and then jump through a hoop 2 meters off the ground. The biggest thing rn is finding time to carry out experiments for my thesis which I will hopefully finish up with this week! It's actually such coincidental timing but this week I have to give a presentation on the most impactful book I've ever read (purely to build confidence in public speaking, damn though, thought I was in science so I didn't have to talk personally) which was extremely difficult considering all impactful "books" I've read in the past four years have been on ao3. So I ended up scavenging through our old messages trying to locate some book recs you had! I actually ended up with another recommendation from the bts boy though, who was reading Almond, this one is called "The Midnight Library" and sounded pretty intriguing! I'll be reading it tonight and tomorrow so if it's worth it I'll update you. What about you queen, are you still working in the job you started last year? I hope it's been going well if so! I know you're into buddy dads these days but anything else been keeping you occupied? Anime wise myself I'm actually about halfway through hunter x hunter?? I started the end of December and it intrigued me ngl. I'm not sure if you've seen but it's very easy to like the main character and his three main besties so I'm looking forward to seeing how things progress further. I also watched the entirety of Voltron out of pure curiosity for how bad the ending was? And I was surprised to see it was actually as shit as they say. However comma the show did lose its appeal much much earlier, have you ever watched? I actually finished up a kdrama series recently as well I believe you recommended me last year called Beyond Evil and holy fucking shit was it good. Usually I fear for around the halfway mark of kdramas that they lose their purpose but I swear they had only warmed up the engine by ep 8. It was addictive to watch and I was so immersed, my love dong sik and his relationship with inspector Han growing and changing throughout the series was extremely interesting to watch unfold. They were a powerful duo when they worked together and I will miss the thrill of each ep.
I hope you've been having a good time in general queen and things have been going well for you :D
So You Want to Design an UTAU
Hello I’ve been meaning to post this for a long time, as someone who puts care into creating my UTAUs. I thought it might be useful to some people.
This is part guide and part inside look at what I do while creating my own UTAUs. I hope it helps someone.
Beginning Phase
First, I made a document using ideas I wanted to include. I design UTAUs based on tropes and qualities I like and want to see more often in characters. Here’s the list from 2019 of some qualities I wanted to give Lycoris. Some are subjective while others are specific.
monster qualities(three eyes/horns)
intimidating looking
bob haircut
modern clothing
Unique but not super dressed up
square jaw
broad shoulders
Thinking of what you want to see in an UTAU can help with the design process. Find different ways to put those elements together or add new ones!
Naming Conventions
It is extremely common for UTAUs to have Japanese names which are filled with meaning. Using the “Ne” kanji (which can also be read as oto) was common from 2008-2012 and is still used sometimes today. Using “-loid” or “-poid” suffixes is common, but may make your UTAU seem more like a software than a character.
I chose to give all my UTAUs non-Japanese names in order to make it easier on myself. Japanese naming conventions can be difficult to learn if you’re a beginner. Lycoris is a Greek name, Omichron is a made up name that’s Greek-ish, and Alta Maha’s name was inspired by the Altamaha-ha, a creature with roots in Indigenous Muscogee tradition. From the start I wanted all my UTAUs to have lore, and for them to be mythical/fictional beings of some kind. Making all your UTAUs in the same art style and theme can be fun, but don’t feel obligated to. Having a single UTAU with many updates and appends is also common.
Speaking of appends, the most straightforward way to name them is by voice type (Solid, Soft, etc) but unique names are fun too! I named all of Lycoris’ vbs after phases of the moon and have stuck with that choice.
A good tip is to not give your UTAU a name that already exists in UTAU land. Looking at Vocadb and UTAU wiki is an easy way to check for that. UTAUs are all part of the same “category” of vocal synths, so having a name similar to another can make it hard for people to find info about your UTAU.
Designs
Choosing to not give your UTAU a design is feasible, but that’s also a conscious choice. UTAUs may get more publicity than your OCs that aren’t tied to some other known property, so many want to give them good and memorable designs. Character design is subjective and a very complex topic, so I’ll just sum up some tips for UTAUs that I kept in mind.
The best advice for designs is to not trace any other art, official or not! If you trace, say, a Kei art, people will notice and their view of your UTAU may sour. Even using a picrew or a free to use base is better than tracing(as long as it’s allowed). In fact, there’s quite a few UTAUs in existnce who started out as picrew OCs. Commissioning another artist may be an option if money is no object.
Many UTAU designs were/are inspired by existing Vocaloids or the Macne series. The best advice I can give for these is to add some defining feature that makes them unique from their inspiration. There isn’t anything wrong with being inspired by an existing vocal synth as long as it’s not a blatant ripoff. My Omichron was loosely inspired by Macne Papa, but you probably wouldn’t guess that immediately!
I went through many, many concepts for Lycoris before settling on my final one. One of these eventually became the basis for Alta’s design! Other times, I find a design I want to settle on quickly.
This is the Lycoris concept that eventually became Alta. I largely was inspired by irl fashion.
Tumblr media
I personally start with color palettes before drawing out an actual design, and when I settle on a design I adjust the colors further until they’re exactly how I want them. Colourpod is a good place to find palettes. Sticking to a limited set of colors means I’m not struggling to find some that look good together.
Creating a Pinterest board for your UTAU’s overall aesthetic can help to take inspiration from! It constantly gives new suggestions and ideas base on the images you add to it.
Standing Art
Deciding on a pose for your standing art can be tricky. My general tips here are to plan it in a way that shows off most of the design. Perspective shots are great but not for default standing pictures which may be reused for covers/other material.
You don’t have to make every standing picture perfect...I tend to do that and it makes them take forever, haha. Sketchy/simple official art can be just as pretty. And there’s all the time in the world to re-draw it.
Those are just a few tips for how I handle UTAU character designs! Nothing is a hard and fast rule of course. The best advice to creating UTAUs is to have fun with it.
Series Illustrator Interview
Epic of Evil page 71-76
Meeting With AkunoP
.
--First, please introduce yourselves.
Yoshida Dondorian (hereon: Yoshida): I’m Yoshida. I started working on the series in “Wiegenlied of Green”!
you-ring@Kitano Tomotoshi (hereon: you-ring): I’m you-ring@Kitano Tomotoshi, who got to draw the cover art for “Praeludium of Red” and “Praefacio of Blue”.
You: I’m You. I did the cover for this book, “Epic of Evil”. This is my second interview after the one in Entr’acte of Evil, but I’m a bit nervous this time too.
--You-san answered this question in “Entr’acte of Evil”’s illustrator interview, but you-ring-san and Yoshida-san, what was your first AkunoP work?
Yoshida: I first started listening to VOCALOID around 2009 or so…So I got in around the time all those derivative fan videos of “Daughter of Evil” were coming out.
you-ring: My first AkunoP songs were “Daughter of Evil” and “Servant of Evil” of course. I think it was around the time “Servant of Evil” got uploaded, and I saw all these comments to watch it after watching “Daughter of Evil”, so I did…I remember bawling over it.
--There was a ton of uproar over “Daughter of Evil” and “Servant of Evil” at the time, wasn’t there. What was your impression of AkunoP-san himself?
Yoshida: Didn’t I hear that he completely transformed himself…!?
--Transformed (haha). That’s true, he did do an image change to wearing sunglasses and a beard.
Yoshida: My image of him wasn’t like that at all, so I think I might have been introduced to him pre-transformation at “VOC@LOiD M@STER” (colloquially “VoMas”)!
you-ring: I think I also saw him the first time at VoMas…But I can’t remember when that was lol
Yoshida: Rather than being surprised by him, I remember thinking, “Ah, so this is the guy who made the Of Evil series…!” That sort of thing.
you-ring: For an “Evil” person he seemed very good-natured. …That might count as malicious rumor, hey?
--I wouldn’t think so (haha)
you-ring: Sounds like I’m not getting scolded lol. In that sense, unlike Yoshida-san I was very surprised by him.
.
Celebrating Series Completion! Most Bittersweet
.
--Please tell us how you felt when the final and fourth installment of the series came out. you-ring-san, you were the one who worked on the cover for the fourth novel, Yoshida-san you worked on some of its artwork, and You-san you participated in the pinup art.
Yoshida: With all of the plot threads that were being revealed, from the first novel to the last I felt like it was all so very interesting…And also that I really wanted to read more of the “Of Evil” world just a little longer!
You: I had a lot of fun being able to draw art for each installment, and I remember feeling really desolate that we were at the last one. Even now I have the “Daughter of Evil” books piled up on my desk; you-ring-san’s Kyle, coupled with the book’s contents, are very striking, I think.
you-ring: While I felt very uplifted at being able to continue to do the cover art after the third book, at the same time the pressure at it being the finale was immeasurable. Still, in the end, since it was Kyle I muddled through it.
You: Also, it really felt like a collaborative effort, with Yoshida-san’s pictures really connecting the third and fourth books.
Yoshida: Aw, thank you so much!
you-ring: I would find myself going back to look at Yoshida-san’s artwork! I can’t help but sigh in admiration every time I see everyone’s artwork. You-san and Yoshida-san both have such tremendous ability for creating atmosphere in their pictures.
Yoshida: I’m truly honored…!
You: You’re much too kind! So many other illustrators contributed to the Of Evil novels, so it’s really fun in the sense that we get to see various worlds within that. Like, “Ah, that’s another way to go about it too”.
Yoshida: Yeah, I was always looking forward to it, and also every time I would get really nervous about if I’m redundant or not.
you-ring: Concepts and worldviews that I couldn’t put forward…I got a ton of motivation. I also had the same anxiety about being redundant lol, I was doing this work while constantly wondering if it was good enough.
Yoshida: And You-san and you-ring-san made such lovely art and covers from the very first installment, including “Entr’acte of Evil”. They really caught my eye when I saw them at the publisher’s!
--The illustrations for this book turned out pretty gorgeous too.
You: Wow!
Yoshida: Oh! I’m really excited to see it!
You: My heart’s all fluttery now…
you-ring: I’m gonna head over to the publisher’s in a bit! (I haven’t left yet)
You: Though everyone who’s reading this will have seen them already. Sounds great.
--On that topic, Elluka’s finally debuted on this cover.
Yoshida: I love her so much that I picked Elluka-san as my image for the illustrator comments in book four, so that makes me happy! I’m looking forward to that too! You-san’s Elluka is so pretty…
You: I was really happy to be able to draw Elluka-sama prominently, given her unique position. Her general image is really evocative of purple, which is a color you don’t see too much on book covers I think.
you-ring: I got really excited to see it as soon as I heard about it! I wanna see it already!
--On that note, all of the members here are people who’ve drawn a decent amount of characters. Please tell us of any you had fun drawing, or any you particularly like.
Yoshida: The sorceresses, of course! Naturally I love the other more human characters too, but with them having that unique position that got mentioned earlier, I’m just super drawn to these somewhat detached women… Although the frontispiece for this book is my first time drawing them.
You: In my afterwards comments I declared my favorites to be Allen-kun, Elluka, and Gumillia, but the person I get fired up about drawing is Yukina-chan from the third book. Since she’s a character that didn’t get featured in the songs originally, it was very refreshing to be able to draw her. After that, obviously Riliane and Allen.
you-ring: Yukina in the frontispiece for the third book was so beautiful, she was just too precious lol
Yoshida: Same for how you drew her!
you-ring: Out of all the things I’ve gotten to draw, I’ve drawn Yukina the most, and so I’ve become the most attached to her. In this story with so many different characters interwoven through it, I think she’s a girl with a really interesting and toothsome place in it. Also Prim too, actually—she’s comparatively more difficult in terms of time and labor to draw, but she was also pretty fun…
You: you-ring’s Prim is too beautiful, my eyes end up getting drawn to her chest…(haha)
Yoshida: Prim’s chest…and the wrinkling in her clothing under her chest.
you-ring: Wha—we’re talking about her chest now!? Shame on you lol. Yoshida-san, you really surprised me with how differently you were able to depict Yukina, despite her being the same character.
You: That illustration was so amazing, it really felt like it had that feeling of the pen telling the story. I also liked how the character silhouettes were put in with their motif colors.
you-ring: Yeah, the tracing line of the pen was great! I was just stunned at the concept put into such a picture.
Yoshida: Oh wow, thanks you guys! That kind of motif is one that’s very much inlaid into the story, and I just wanted to depict it myself…! The “Of Evil” world is full of setups and amazing motifs like that…So I just get…really excited…!
Yoshida: In that sense I also really look forward to the book binding, too! Like, “What kind of figure will be on the flap?” or “what’ll be the design on the pages this time?”…
You: I got you. The rose-->grape-->feather-->seashell designs were really cool.
--Thank you very much! I’d like you to observe the image of the cover under the dust jacket.
You: Ney-chan…
Yoshida: Praeludium and Praefacio…This is really…amazing! Anyone who hasn’t seen it should go look!
--There’s also a secret trick with Wiegenlied as well!
You: Everyone go look at the under-cover…!
Yoshida: Woah, I don’t think I ever noticed…! What is this…! *Rustle rustle* Aaah! Wow!!
you-ring: I guess everyone went to take off their dust jackets all at once, lol
Yoshida: Woooah! *rustlerustlerustle* …What a fantastic production…
You: Feels like everyone at the publisher’s made this really neatly~
Yoshida: I always get a kick out of seeing the maps and commentary! At the very beginning—if you’ll pardon my saying so—I was really dubious as to how it would turn out, since there weren’t any novelizations of VOCALOID songs at the time. But it was made with such love, and the story is naturally very interesting, I feel very strongly that this work makes for amazing books!
--When you put it like that, all the hard work was worth it!
.
Any Surprises? Results of the Character Popularity Poll.
.
--This time around we conducted a character popularity poll!
You: Kyle did very well!
you-ring: Allen had a real strong running!!
Yoshida: Woah…! I wasn’t expecting Clarith’s position…!
--There were a lot of comments from people empathizing with Clarith, it seems.
You: I see…(tears)
Yoshida: I also felt the most moved by Clarith. Congratulations, Clarith…!
--Michaela’s ranking was really surprising. And then there’s Ayn…
Yoshida: Ah, now that you mention it! That’s quite a feat. Surely you’ll put in something commemorative on the cover edges…?
You: Ah! I’ve already completed the cover, so…Everyone, please look at it with your mental eye instead…!
Yoshida: Wha…
you-ring: If I strain my eyes, I see there…
--Ayn has no character design, so you’ll all have to make sure to draw him when you get the chance (haha)
Yoshida: Well then, maybe we could slip him into an illustration… Though he doesn’t have a design…
You: That’s a good idea! Maybe I’ll upload an image to my blog then…lol
Yoshida: Ooh! I’d love to see your Ayn, You-san…! I’ll covertly look forward to it…
you-ring: You mean a festival for the Ayn I came up with!?
You: You’re gonna draw him too, aren’t you you-ring-san?
you-ring: Uh.
Yoshida: Yeah! Ayn’s gotta have this magnificent backstory, right? I feel like Akuno-san would make something like that…
--Various countries were featured throughout the story; are there any that you all would like to go to?
you-ring: It’s not a country, but I’d like to just go see the Millennium Tree at least once, soon. So in that sense, Elphegort?
Yoshida: Oh, me too! I want to go to the Millennium Tree Forest. Also, of course, the place where the story started: Lucifenia.
You: I also think I’d like to see the Millennium Tree. It’d feel like a world heritage spot, don’t you think? Also, I’d want to go to a banquet on the Freezis Estate (though I can’t).
--Held-sama is quite popular then! The Millennium Tree is meant to be a former pilgrimage site, though lately it sounds like not many people go there anymore.
you-ring: It’s an undiscovered gem! I’d just like to go there and take my time idling around, seeing everyting…
Yoshida: I’d love that! Frankly, all the countries sound dangerous…Even the Millennium Tree isn’t safe, but it has a peaceful image I think, so if I went to any of them physically…The Millennium Tree is good.
you-ring: Sorry that you asked us a question about countries and we all answered with a forest lol
.
And Now, To the “Seven Deadly Sins”
.
--Now that the “Daughter of Evil” series is complete, let’s hear some nice words for AkunoP-san, if you please.
Yoshida: Congratulations on finishing it. You did such good work! Although, as a reader, there’s still a lot more I want to see. I’m…really really excited to see the “Deadly Sins of Evil” series (chuckle)
You: I’m saying this a lot here, but I want to say thank you for all your hard work, it’s greatly appreciated. I’m very happy at just being able to depict your characters, Akuno-san. I’m also excited for the “Deadly Sins of Evil”. I’ll be in anticipation while listening to the songs on repeat.
you-ring: Always stay evil, yeah? I’m also looking forward to the Deadly Sins Series! And a sincere congratulations on finishing the Daughter of Evil series.
--Please tell us more how you’re all curious about and looking forward to the new “Deadly Sins” series.
you-ring: As a reader I’m very curious as to how the story will be told and how it’ll be released, like if each sin will be published one by one.
Yoshida: The Seven Deadly Sins have a strong impact in various different directions, so I’m really excited to see how it all ties together!
You: I’m looking forward to seeing how the various secrets woven into the work get brought to light. I feel like reading the “Deadly Sins” series will end up making me want to reread the “Daughter of Evil” series again.
--Thank you very much! Now then, please say one last thing here.
Yoshida: I am truly grateful for being able to assist in the “Daughter of Evil” series. It’s a wonderful thing to be involved in this enormous world. The songs, the books, I hope to see even more from here on out!
you-ring: I think this series has let me take part in a truly valuable experience, and it’s been a great honor to take part in it. Thank you very much for inviting me on here!
You: From the very first book to this “Epic of Evil”, thank you so much for having me draw for this series for such a long time. I’ve nothing but gratitude.
--Thank you all for your time.
Loid opened the door.
“You’re married!?” A female voice screeched.
Loid closed the door. Holding it closed as the person on the other side banged against it frantically.
“Loid?” Yor’s voice was high and concerned. Butter knife clenched in her hand. “Who’s that?”
Anya’s eyes went wide. Loid pressed his forehead against the door as it pounded.
“That.” He lamented. “Is my sister.”
“Stop yelling. The neighbors are staring.” He scolded when he finally opened the door.
She shoved past him. Taking in the apartment. Surveying their domain before her eyes settled on them.
She was all blue eyes and wild blond curls.
His sister.
Yor’s hand stayed tight around the butter knife. Half afraid she attack.
The hand not holding the knife was firmly clasped between both of Loid’s sister’s. Blue eyes drilling into her as she opened her mouth – undoubtedly to comment on how quick it must have been or how she wasn’t good enough or how she didn’t approve- and said,
“You deserve better.”
The door clicked closed behind Loid as he sighed. “Olivia –don’t.” He plead.
“No you seriously do. I once listened to him wax poetic about bumblebees for eight hours straight and I once watched him dive into an empty swimming pool and-“
“Yor, Anya, meet Olivia Stahl. She’s been working abroad the last few years. She was an intern I helped train during residency.”
“You helped train me?” She turned on him. “I’m sorry which one of us drank that spiked cocktail just to prove a point about how strong his liver was? Because I specifically remember telling you not to drink it and then you downing it in one go because-”
He did not make eye contact with her. Eyes train well above her head as he continued on ignoring her. “I didn’t realize she’d come home. Lovely to see you again Olivia but I only made enough for three so you’ll have to be going now-“
“Auntie!” Anya jumped out of her chair and hugged her leg. Halting his shoving her back out the door. “I missed you!”
There existed gratitude and irritation in equal measure in his heart. Gratitude that Anya had decided to play along with the situation. Irritation that her ploy would slow his removal of Olivia.
Olivia smacked his stomach with the back of her hand. “Well your daughter has decided I’m staying so I’m staying! It’s fine I’ll just eat your portion.” She settled herself down in his seat with a smirk. Anya stared up at her expectantly. Olivia smacked her forehead and dug around her bag pulling out a small figurine. “Sorry I didn’t bring your official present Anya. I heard he’d tricked some poor woman into marrying him and I forgot your gift at home.”
She’ll just pick something up later and pretend she got it abroad.
“But maybe you can keep an eye on this little fellow for your Dad until then?”
It was a small figurine of a bumblebee. Incredibly lifelike. Its eyes tiny ordered hexagons. She frowned and shook her head.
He plucked it from her palm and set it on the counter. “A Bombus Fernaldae. Will you drop this joke? It was one time.”
“It was not just one time! And the fact you could identify what kind of bee it is says plenty about how much you secretly like it.” She turned her focus to Yor. Ignoring Loid’s put upon sigh. “So tell me how he managed to trick you into marrying him.”
“I- well I actually asked him?”
Her lips curled with revulsion as she stretched the word “Why?” into an eight syllable groan.
Loid sat down with a new plate serving himself a new meal while Olivia ate the remains of his old one. “Eden requires children who apply to have two married parents. She was helping us out.”
You’re telling her that? I thought we were keeping it quiet.
“Oh I gathered what you got out of it but I was asking what she got out of it.”
“She doesn’t owe you an explanation Olivia.” He scowled. Olivia yipped in pain drawing her legs up onto the chair.
“Don’t kick me!”
“Don’t interrogate my wife.”
“Is it blackmail? If you need me to get rid of him for you I can-“
“I’m not blackmailing her!”
The conversation rapidly dissolved into bickering. Full of stories and inside jokes that were thrown and discarded far too quickly to unravel.
Loid ran his hand through his hair for the fifth time in as many minutes. The floof levels rising higher and higher. His locks growing more and more bedraggled as they continued.
Anya’s wide eyes snapped between the two of them like a riveting tennis match.
“Actually,” She started, interrupting the flow of their verbal sparring. Loid froze mid stab of the steak on Olivia’s plate. Suddenly remembering they weren’t alone. “Loid helped me out. Being single at my age can attract the wrong kind of attention.” Screams of the people the secret police dragged away filled the space between words. “And my brother was worried. I was very lucky to meet Loid when I did.”
Olivia side eyed Loid. “Lucky. Right.” She smiled brightly at Yor. “You have a brother?”
Loid settled back into his chair, the impish grin falling away as the conversation drifted to calmer waters.
“Walk me out?” She requested after the last of the dishes were put away.
He nodded. Anya’s eyes followed them out the door.
“Anya you have to finish this if you don’t want to miss spy wars.”
Her focus turned back to the homework with a groan.
She offered a cigarettes to him.
“I quit.”
“For your fake family up there?”
He shrugged. “We’ve both read the studies. Seemed as good a reason as any.”
She blew out a smoke cloud. “Sure but it’s not like cancer’s going to get a chance to kill us.”
“Was there a point or did you just want to make my laundry more difficult?”
She hummed. “Can’t it be both?” Elbowed him.
He settled against the brick wall with a sigh. “What’s the job?”
“Get a solid night’s sleep? How’s that for a mission.”
His head tapped against the wall. Eyes closed and face turned upward to the hazy sky. It did nothing to hide the lines of deep seated exhaustion.  “They send you to do a psych eval?”
“Should I?”
“I’m fine.”
“Fine like I’m just overworked but am actually fine or fine like you’d get your makeup perfect before going in for an eval?”
“My makeup is always perfect. Yours however-“ He tilted his head to peer down at her. Tossing a cheeky grin her way.
“Is impeccable.”
“Just like I taught you.”
“You did not!” Shoving him. He bobbed to the side dramatically before returning to his position. “They seem nice.”
“They are.” His eyes found the carton in her hand longingly. He tore his eyes away. “Bombus Fernaldae huh.”
“Going to pull a cuckcoo bee on them when the mission is over?”
“The mission comes first.”
“Not going to turn you in for wanting more asshole.”
His eyes dragged up to their window as she took a drag of the cigarette.
“We can’t be more than we are.”
“Did you just make a bee pun? Cause I will tell the entire department. I’ll report you for that. Assault on a coworker.”
“I rented a castle and they barely batted an eye. No one will believe you Nite Lite.”
“I have an actual title these days you know.”
“And I promise I will never use it.” He assured like that was the problem. Which it wasn’t. He pat her head. She considered biting it off. “Just overworked. This has been. Good for me I think.”
“Aside from the potential cleanup?”
“I try not to think about that.”
She snorted. “She deserves better.”
“Of course.”
“Don’t agree with me. It doesn’t make you less of an asshole.”
“She knows it’s fake. It’s not like I’m lying to her about that.”
“Oh so she knows that. Great and I’m sure your brat totally got the memo about how-“
“Stop.” His voice heavy and dark. “I didn’t design the mission.”
The smoke curled in the air. “Yeah I know.”
Cold threaded its ways slowly into their jackets.
“Did she actually propose?”
“She did. I was so shocked I fell flat on my face.”
“Ugh! Don’t tell me shit like that! Literally no one ever believes me when I tell them what a mess you are! It’s Agony! Agony you hear me?”
“So sorry my lying is more effective than your honesty.” He leaned over her. “It’s this handsome face of mine. People instinctively think I’m put together.”
She gripped his smug face. Shoving it away as he pushed against her. “I will break your handsome face and then we’ll see if anyone can put you back together!”
He laughed as she shoved him away. She stopped.
It sounded genuine.
It had been so long since she’d heard him laugh like that. Not since his last partner had been –
Twilight cocked his head at her questioningly.
“She still deserves better than you and your knockoff curries.” She told him one last time. Stamping out the cigarette butt with her shoe.
But it seems like she might be good for you.
Hi hi! I was wondering if I could get some advice on my OC design 😔 I’ve had an OC for a while now and I know what she looks like and her style but everytime I try to put her to paper, nothing seems right! I’ve been agonizing over it for quite a while! I’m able to draw her partner just fine (which is strange since I usually struggle with guys). I just don’t know what to do :( have you had troubles with your characters like this? 😢
It might be that she’s not ready to show herself to you yet so give her and yourself some time. Sometimes you try to push forward in the wrong time and the story/the character can’t go forward as fast as you’d want them to. Give your creative process time!
Perhaps her partner is able to bring her out? I would concentrate on drawing and spending more time with him. Sometimes the other characters follow the lead of another character they are connected to.
For me, working with the characters works the best when I treat them like real people. They have their own personalities, quirks, traits, fears, hopes, problems, bad sides, good sides, ways of approaching things, communication styles etc. They grow and develop like real children do. What at first was just a small baby you knew some basics of (the beginning of the character) is soon a child with their own traits (grown character) until they one day tell you this and that and tell they want to be this instead (teenager time, making own decisions).
I’d say don’t try to design the character 100% complete immediately, if at all. Just get basics down and let the rest come to you. This gives you and the character freedom to take turns they want (like I wanted Fuzzy to be dangerous and menacing but he ended up being cute and socially anxious because that’s who he is).
I generally don’t sit down and design and plan anything too much, because the more freedom I have, the better I work and the more I like the results. Nyrkes and Eva are one of the rare characters I sat down and designed and even then, both of them took turns of their own later: Eva turned out to be very mischievous though you have not seen it in the comics yet, and Nyrkes wanted to be beefier than my original design. So I let them.
The biggest problem with character designing I have ever had is A or R’s name. Took me almost 2 years until I got it but that’s because A or R is a character who is very mellow and fine with anything I come up with. This type of working is hard for me when the character has no boundaries I can’t cross. They are fine with EVERYTHING! That’s difficult... I have to be a bit strict with A or R at times.
The opposite of A or R is Loid. He has got very strict boundaries around him and it has taken 5 years from me to get to know him. His creation goes with the pace he wants and I can only follow it. I think he will never reveal his whole self to me, ever. There are still things I don’t know about Loid.
So, inspect this female character of yours; how does she feel like to you? Is she careful? Does she like soft approach? Does she need encouraging? Is she relying on someone else to introduce herself to you? Is she still figuring out some things of herself before she’s ready to show her looks to you? Does she want to have a chance to change her looks later? Are you perhaps unintentionally forcing some looks on her - like a hairstyle - which she doesn’t like? Is her color palette OK or would something else work better? Does she want to have a smaller role? Is someone else trying to come to take her place instead but you haven’t realized this yet? Could you figure something out of her via her partner? What could he tell about her? Could you draw them together or imagine them together? How do they act and behave around one another in your mind when you concentrate on them? What kind of things this imaginative play reveals of her to you?
The character will show itself when the time is right and if you have no deadlines some clients would demand from you, then allow the creative process flow naturally.
If you ARE in a hurry or stuck with this and would like to handle it your way, seek inspiration out intentionally; what mood boards inspire you? What art styles inspire you? Are there characters or persons you could use as help for her design? What clothing or hair inspires you? Are there some personality traits you like? This usually helps me when I have to intentionally design something due deadlines.
Happy creations! :3
Spy x Family x Random Thoughts
Tumblr media
I had the pleasure of reading Spy x Family, vol. 1, thanks to the dynamic duo of VIZ and Twwk.
-----
At first blush, it’s a normal (?) family: a father, a mother, and a six-year-old girl. But one of them is a spy, one is an assassin, and one is a psychic, and two of the three don’t realize just how complicated their situation is. Spy x Family is a droll genre mashup with a lot of heart. It draws on classic spy thrillers like the James Bond and Mission: Impossible films, mistaken identity comedies, two-people-pretend-to-be-in-a-relationship-but-fall-in-love-for-real romcoms, and reluctant-adult-suddenly-becomes-parent-to-cute-kid-and-family-ensues stories. Volume 1 details the start of this peculiar relationship dynamic.
Tumblr media
Twilight is a covert intelligence operative in a world roughly modeled after Cold War-era Europe. He’s assigned to investigate a reclusive politician whose only known public appearances are at events as his son’s school. So Twilight has a week to find a wife and kid and enroll said child at the same elite private academy. This will, theoretically, grant Twilight a chance to get closer to his target. Under the alias Loid Forger, he finds an apartment, then visits a rundown orphanage that’s undoubtedly in violation of multiple laws and adopts a seemingly clever little girl named Anya. Of course, Twilight expects to ditch the girl and send her back to an orphanage as soon as his mission is over.
Anya truly is a gifted child, but not in the way Twilight hopes. Unbeknownst to him, this six-year-old girl escaped from some creepy mad science project after they did something that turned her into telepath, which has utterly hilarious results! For one, Anya easily learns her new papa is a spy, and thinks it’s super cool. Moreover, as a spy, Twilight often doesn’t want to share what he’s thinking…except Anya knows it anyway and often responds unpredictably to words he didn’t actually speak. She quickly gets attached to her cool new spy papa, and determines not to let him go. The next major hurdle arises when the super elite private school’s admissions process requires a family interview…which both of a child’s parents must attend. So Twilight needs to recruit an accomplice a wife within forty-eight hours.
Separate and apart, a clerk at city hall named Yor Briar faces pressure from coworkers and her younger brother to get a boyfriend. She ends up telling her brother she already has one…and quickly winds up in a situation where she’ll need to provide an actual human being to prove it to him. Also, Yor is an assassin known as the Thorn Princess. After she rips her nicest dress while slaughtering a bunch of dudes at a hotel, she goes to a clothing store, and chances upon Twilight and Anya out shopping for nicer clothes to the replace the ones Anya received at the orphanage. Despite their unwitting mutual interest (Twilight needs a shame wife, Yor needs a sham boyfriend), nothing happens…almost.
Fortunately, Anya is a telepath. She quickly learns that Yor is a super cool assassin and decides wants Yor for a mother. Anya also realizes that Yor and Twilight need each other for their respective situations. Thus the six-year-old cleverly plays matchmaker between the spy and the assassin. Initially, Twilight agrees to accompany Yor to a party to uphold her lie to her brother, and Yor agrees to pose as Anya’s mother for the family interview. After a bit of a violent sidequest the same evening as the party, Twilight arrives late, bloody, and battered…and he mixes up his roles, claiming to be Yor’s husband instead of her boyfriend. But Yor is actually on board with this – a marriage will better provide cover for her work as an assassin than remaining single. Stuff happens, as they end up legally married.
The resulting family contains three members, each trying to keep a huge secret to keep from the others, allthough Anya already knows their big secrets because, hey, telepathy. Both Twilight and Yor expect this to be a temporary arrangement in which they use the other to provide cover for their real work. Anya, meanwhile, is doing her best to make them a real family. And there are some cute hints that Twilight and Yor are starting to actually like each other.
Lots of other stuff happens in vol. 1, but that summarizes the main cast and how they wind up together. But you didn’t come here to read my scintillating summary, did you, dear reader? Of course not. Fortunately, while it seems this manga probably won’t be taking itself too terribly seriously, there were a couple of thought-provoking moments on which I shall pontificate further.
The story opens with this declaration: “Everyone has a secret they don’t show to other people.” Certainly secrets are a defining force in the lives of Twilight, Anya, and Yor. Those of us who aren’t spies or assassins don’t tend to find quite so much need for secrecy. Yet even we plebes can have secrets, both trivial and terrible. Secrets sometimes arise for positive reasons, but often they seem to stem from less healthy sources: shame and fear at best, or outright evil motives at worst. Secrets of this sort tend to be burdens. Of course, in the manga, someone does know the secrets of both Twilight and Yor: their adoptive daughter Anya (who knows thanks to her own secret!).
Anya brings to mind the one who knows all our secrets. Or, perhaps, it would be better to say that when it comes to God, we have no secrets. Long before we existed, God already knew everything about us. He knew every sin we’d ever commit. He knew exactly how flawed and broken and foolish and weak we’d be. Knowing all of that didn’t stop him from taking on human form, sacrificing himself for us, and creating us. I find this reminder especially relevant when it comes to prayer. There’s nothing so trivial or embarrassing that we can’t talk to God about it. Indeed, considering how much the Bible says about prayer, it seems God actually very much wants us to talk to him about our lives.
Another interesting moment in the manga was a realization Twilight has. He had remarked earlier about how he can’t stand to be around crying children. Later, he recognizes why: suffering children (like Anya) remind him of his own difficult childhood. Twilight acknowledges that trying to avoid these painful memories was warping his attitude toward children. In this, Twilight illustrates the reality that our childhood experiences have profound, dramatic, and often unexpected effects on us.
When I was a kid, my emotionally abusive dad was always right about everything. His authority was absolute, and anything other than instant compliance with his commands was sinful disobedience. As an adult, I learned that my dad was anything but always right, that parental authority is not absolute, and that my dad wasn’t remotely deserving of the extreme reverence I’d been raised to have for him. This has affected my attitude toward all authorities and is something I still wrestle with. After all, the central authority of my childhood, toward whom I had this warped sense of veneration, turned out to be wrong and untrustworthy in some really big ways. I can’t help but project that experience onto most other human authorities, leaving me leery of giving any of them too much trust, too much respect, too much obedience.
Whether those around Twilight will help him develop a healthy relationship with authority matches my own life: a progression that remains to be seen. Putting aside my own transformation, though, I’m eager to see how Twilight grows throughout the course of Spy x Family, and the same for the rest of his makeshift family. And so, I recommend volume one of Spy x Family—a most oddly cute and romantic comedy-action-spy-manga.
