Skull-Sunflower Granny Square Tutorial
youtube
🌻↓↓↓ More Info Below the Cut ↓↓↓💀
Supplies:
Yarn: Super Saver Med/4 Weight
Yarn Colors: Coffee, Cafe Latte, Saffron, Jade
Crochet Hook: Size 5.50mm
Tapestry Needle
Scissors
Abbreviations (US Terms):
SC - single crochet HDC - half double crochet DC - double crochet TC - treble crochet CH - chain loop
Step One: Follow Totally Stitchcraft's Skull Tutorial to make the center of the flower. (The color is Coffee)
Tumblr media
Step Two: Round off the Skull. Starting in the first stitch directly to the right of the mouth. (The color is Cafe Latte)
Standing DCx1, HDCx2, SCx15, HDCx2, DCx1, SCx3 Slip Stitch into first DC to complete (24 stitches total)
You can learn how to do a Standing Double Crochet in Totally Stitchcraft's Skull Tutorial around 7:12-7:32
Step Three: Starting from the Slip Stitch, follow Hooked by Robin's Sunflower Tutorial starting at 5:04 with the Puffed Stitch Row, and follow all the way through the Petal Row. (NOTE: I made my petals using Treble Crochet in place of the Double Crochet used in HbR’s original pattern)
There should be 24 Puff Stitches and 24 Petals in total. (Switching from Cafe Latte to Saffron)
Step Four: Divide the petals into four sections of 6 petals. 6 on the top (centered with the skull), 6 on either side, and 6 on the bottom. (Although there is nothing stopping you from making the skull diagonal, tbh)
Starting in the space between petals, to the right of the first in the row of six petals. (The color is now Jade)
1st Space: Ch 4 and TCx2, 2nd: DCx3, 3rd: HDCx3, 4th: SCx3, 5th: HDCx3 6th: DCx3, 7th: TCx3 (This completes the first side of the square, 21 stitches in total.) Turn the Corner: Chain x3 and TCx3 in the same space as the previous TCx3 Repeat until all 4 sides are complete, Slip Stitch to join the fourth corner. (21 stitches on each side)
Step Five: Complete the final border:
Starting in the Slip Stitch, Chain 2, and DC until you reach the Chain 3 Corner. (21 DC total) Turn the Corner: (In the CH3 space) DCx2, CHx2, DCx2 Repeat until all 4 sides are complete, Slip Stitch to join the fourth corner. (25 DC on each side.)
PS: Weave your tails every time you switch colors, I promise it makes your life easier!

My Plans for Solarpunk Aesthetic Week 3
Solarpunk Aesthetic Week 3 begins in a week! I hope everyone's excited--I sure am!
Knowing me, I likely won't get to everything on this list (I haven't the past two years, after all). Also knowing me, I'll likely think of things after I post this list that I might wind up doing instead. But! Hopefully this list of plans helps inspire you, or at least holds me somewhat accountable.
So what am I planning to do to celebrate the event?
On the very tippy top of my list is finally putting together an above-ground mini pond idea I have! I still have to draw up the plans, and I'm not gonna pretend to be an expert on making mini ponds, but I'm excited to give things a shot! I've been sitting around with the materials for a week now biting the urge to do it because I want this to be one of my Big Solarpunk Things.
I've been working on a crochet dragonfly cloak for awhile, and I'm hoping to have it finished by the end of SAesW! Even if I don't wind up finishing it, I think at least posting a project update during this time would be nice!
Maybe I'll finally crochet myself a cute turtle. I've seen patterns online of turtles with sunflower shells so I might give that one a go!
At the very least I have a granny square tote bag that I literally just need to sew together (and make a lining for but shhhh). And a gift for my mom but yknow.
Initially back in April-May era I was planning to write a short story to share for the event, but I couldn't come up with anything? Every idea I came up with had too many holes and at this point I wouldn't count on me posting a story during the event. Buuuut I might start a short story (or resume work on my Solarpunk Zombie Story that I haven't worked on since May 14th 2023).
If my tablet behaves, I might try making solarpunk art? I struggle with feeling like I can make solarpunk art but I have a few ideas I might try to do!
I wouldn't place any bets on me whipping out the sewing machine because I've been meaning to for months now and it hasn't happened. But if I do, I'll sew a lining for my sunflower crochet bag, and maybe make some more face masks while I'm at it!
Is this when Ani finally begins her Learning Embroidery Era? Who know! Not me!
Depending on the weather maybe I'll see about convincing myself to check out the local Aboretum that I did not know existed in my city until this February. Maybe convince Dad to come with? We must keep in mind the temps have been in the 90s lately (and that's before counting humidity) so it really depends on my willpower.
My tomato plants aren't doing as well as they were last year but if I get more tomatoes I'll see what happens. At the very least I can post pictures of bugs on my gardening blog.
That's what I'm planning! What are you guys hoping to do?

Tonight I'm feeling emotional.
One of the curios I keep on display in my place is a rock. It is very flat and very square and filled with fossils. But that's not what's important about it. It actually stays wrapped up in a paper napkin. The napkin has a sunflower pattern. It's a napkin from my Grannie's funeral. The rock was in the dirt that was dug up to bury her.
I just had my parents over to help me rearrange my office. My mom and I talked briefly about the rock. Apparently that type of rock was very common where she grew up.
I probably never would have thought about using fancy china everyday if my mom hadn't told me that she grew up using fancy china every day. I actually have what remains of that set. But it doesn't fit in my apartment so it still lives in my parents' house.
A good amount of my furniture came from my Grannie's house. I know that that side of my family would be thrilled that I'm loving and using their things.
But the China I use came from my Nan. She had Alzheimer's. I never spent as much time with her because it's difficult spending time as a child with someone who doesn't know who you are. I feel less sure about her thoughts on me loving and using her things.
So I texted my dad, saying that I love using Nan's china. Because it's true and you should say true things.
Like, if I was offered any other set of China to use every day, I'd still pick this set. Because it was hers.
Sometimes I feel like I'm not great at connecting to people. But I try. And I care. And I feel. And I think of the people in my life, that have been in my life, everyday.

Omg thank u sm for the detailed post! I wasn’t expecting u to go that in depth so I appreciate you taking the time to explain so eloquently! After doing some more research I think I should start with crocheting to have some kind of base foundation work with yarn and then get into knitting. Do you have any pattern recommendations for crocheting? Again thank u for your input on all of this!
i wasn’t expecting myself to go that in depth either, but apparently when it comes to knitting i just can’t stop myself, but i hope it was useful at least a little bit.
sounds like a good idea to start with crochet though!! i started with crochet and didn’t pick up knitting for years, but since learning i tend to crochet for things that aren’t clothes, so for first patterns i’d say pillows or if you’re a bit braver, blankets would be your best bet. bags are also a good option but tend to need a lining if you want to use them a lot. and you also have to consider whether you want to crochet in squares or just back and forth in one piece, bc both test your patience in a different way. making granny squares feels great bc you keep getting a win whenever you finish one, but then putting it all together can feel so long even though it’s rewarding, whereas making in one piece feels like it takes longer but when it’s done, it’s done, you don’t have any tedious assembly.
crochet is also a lot more freeform than knitting, at least for me. like you can take squares and out them together to make a whole host of things, so I’d say a great starting point would be a classic granny square, and you can make it up in so many ways to make a pillowcase or blanket or a top or a jumper and so much more. pintrest is a great place to find patterns just in general, but just search up granny square and you’ll find a whole host of things. for beginners, either the classic granny square or a sunburst granny square would be best, and from there you can join them to make whatever you want. I’ll include some links in the read more that might be helpful, and have fun crocheting!!
and some things you can do with granny squares:

so i’ve been following a video tutorial for this sunflower granny square blanket i’m doing and i didn’t realize that the author of the video/pattern had died. which is a bummer, but like. imagine all the crafts that have been made because of the videos she posted - and all the other crafts people have made based off of written tutorials, or hand-me-down patterns, etc etc
that one video of hers has over 700,000 views. if even half of the people who watched the video went on and made a blanket, holy shit.

Garden Variety, part ii: the rest of them
All of the flowers below in this post are original patterns! None of them are written down for your consumption, but if you’re really serious about crocheting, you can deduce them out yourself or take what you like and recreate it in a way that is so uniquely yours that you’ll never be able to look at mine without feeling like there’s something wrong with them. And though I’ll admire yours, I’ll look at them and feel the same way.
All of these are options on my uquiz “Which crocheted flower embodies your Spirit?” but there are bonus pics below this cut right here:
Let’s start early in my flower-growing process. Please be kind.
Mountain Flower
Tumblr media
[image description: a green sparkling square border around a flower with 8 large petals, two on each side of the square, so there are nearly triangular holes in the corners. The petals are a predominantly brown yarn with speckles of light blue and beige. end ID]
An early pattern-free flower. As you can see, there’s some experimentation with bulging double crochet petals built on rows of chains. You’ll be seeing that stitch combo quite a bit. It’s simple, it’s effective. Highly recommend the ol’ [8 dc in 5 ch space]*. Here’s your uquiz description: “I wondered what to call you to distinguish you from the others. You're a brown flower with flecks of blue and beige. One of the first attempted without a pattern. The petals bulge up like mountains, and they are the color of earth and sky. Grounded and dreamy.”
*I made these numbers up; I have no idea what the counting was here.
This flower, and what we’re calling The Nest, and The Sunflower were featured on this post at my real blog. Here’s some more pics of the Nest:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[image description: a very furry, green square with a ring of bubbly yellow stitches around a light blue flower with 8 petals. Second image: a close up of the same square where one furry corner is at the top of the image, and wisps of fur are seen crossing over the yellow flower. Close up, you can see that the yellow petals are cluster stitches around light blue posts. You can also see that there is a non-furry green camo yarn making similarly clustered stitches around the yellow ring. end ID]
To be honest, I don’t know how I feel about this one. The uquiz description is basically: “You’re chaotic,” and will probably be the description that gets changed the most retrospectively. What do you think of it? Is it alright? Is it awful and I should have pretended it never happened? Well, let me remind you that the point of the Quilt in which this resides is partially to explore texture, and there are some textures happening here.
The Sunflower
Tumblr media
[image ID: an 8 petaled yellow sunflower with brown and blue speckled seeds. It sits in a blue square background, almost classic granny square so it looks almost checkered on the black background. end description]
It is actually only younger sunflowers which follow the sun (in a circadian rhythm similar to our own), while the older flowers generally face the east, which helps attract pollinators with their warmth. Like the African Flower - pink, there is a reference to Harold and Maude in the uquiz description for this flower because. I mean, it’s a sunflower. “They’re so tall and simple.” Maintaining that simplicity, the border is basically just your classic granny square. That and the Maude associations; hell, I guess this is your granny’s square after all!
Tumblr media
[image description: another picture of the sunflower, close up and with slightly different lighting so the yellow looks less washed out by the actual sun. The blue border almost fades into the black background. end ID]
Next we have this white flower I have literally no memory of making:
Tumblr media
[image description: a white flower with a circular center and rounded leaves sitting in a dark blue field with a notebook  page background which makes the blue easier to see than the black background featured in the uquiz result. end description]
Moving on.
The Septagon
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[image description: a green lacy crocheted septagon sitting on a white background. The inner flower has 7 pink petals in a small circle surrounded by a peach row of thinner petals. This is all one yarn. Second image: a close up where it is set on a black background with the flower taking up much of the right side of the image. The sun hits the yarn in ways that emphasize the fuzz surrounding the wool-blend pink and salmon flower. It looks almost purple in places. End description]
I’m still obsessed with this one. I’m so obsessed my ability to name it eludes me. It will always be only the Septagon to me. The best 7-sided piece in the Quilt. I can’t remember if the 7 sides were deliberate, or if it all just came together like this without my willing it at all. This piece sprung forward from some Fae’s crochet hook, and I merely take credit for hir inspiration.
And finally, The Rose, a piece so finicky it has ended my floral series for now.
Tumblr media
[image description: a layered red (almost orange in the lighting) flower. Each layer has 5 petals. 5 little green leaves surround the flower, and it's planted in a brown pentagonal "pot." The crochet pentagon rests on a notebook background to emphasize the rich brown yarn. end description]
It’s a mountain of double crochet/half double crochet petals.
Tumblr media
[image description: a close up of the rose part of The Rose. The photo is taken at an angle to showcase how the petals pile up on top of each other. You can tell there is a cat in the house because there are so many hairs clinging to the red flower, and only some of them are yarn-related wisps. end ID]
Let me show you the back so you understand why I’m done crocheting flowers for a little bit. If you don’t speak crochet, saying it’s “a mountain of double crochet/half double crochet petals” means nothing to you. If you do crochet, you might also be like, “but what do you mean by that, Clancy?” Here’s what I mean:
Tumblr media
[image description: two side-by-side duplicate pictures of the back. In the right image there are blue, purple, and green curved lines indicating roughly where 3/4 of the rows are located in relationships to one another. Two straight purple lines indicate where the triple crochets which anchor the second row (also indicated in purple), showing that these seem to reach all the way through the center hole. A black arrow points to “(beginning I haven’t tucked in yet)” a loose piece of red yarn. In the left image, without text, you can see two distinct bottoms of rows before all the parts obscured by these two top rows. In fact, the green line indicating the 3rd interior row of petals doesn’t look like it corresponds to anything, and in the key, it says “the middle layer cannot be seen from here easily enough to point out.” You can faintly make out the wood grain behind the flower more clearly than the 3rd and 4th rows of petals. End ID]

WIPs:
Calendar blanket, Tunisian crochet
Temperature blanket, back & forth granny shells
Sunflower granny squares in cotton (What will I make with them? I don't know)
Cardigan constructed of different squares crocheted using lion brand scarfie in a variety of colours
Granny squares in Noro silk garden yarn
First attempt at knitting a sweater (may take several years)
Ogee-shaped crochet pieces to make something with
Still working on having enough Granny squares made via "the granny square game" copyright jayda in stitches, to make a blanket
Large cotton granny squares done double strand.
Ok that's most of it. How do I stop myself from starting anything new? How do people focus on one project and get it done without getting either bored or seduced by the next pretty pattern that comes along?

Thank you!!! 🥺🥺
And omg please, if you can find a free pattern or if your willing to pay like a couple dollars for a pattern. One please do it!!! I would honestly love to see a crocheted Harry 🥺🥺
And oh no, I’m so so sorry!!! 🥺🥺 I’m sure they didn’t mean to miss it/not pick it up on purpose!!! 🥺🥺
I bet it turned out amazing as well!!! 🥺🥺
Also one more question…. Have you ever tried/have you ever ceo them that yellow bucket hat that Harry wore in the behind the scenes of of his Pleasing brand?
Sorry, now there’s so many things I’m curious to see if you ever crocheted or tried to lol 😂
I would definitely be willing to pay for a pattern! I paid for a pattern for the sunflower I made!
it's okay! I was in pit but I knew when I got there I wasn't close enough to throw it. this very nice group of girls nearby saw me with it and immediately offered to help me pass it up. and it did get passed up and I saw it get tossed but I'm not sure it actually made it. I had a bag of scrunchies with a lil note for him that also got passed up through the crowd but again idk if they made it either 🤷🏼‍♀️ the girls said they both made it up but I'm worried they were just being nice to me lol but I keep going over it in my head like maybe I should've waited until after the show and got close enough to toss them both up myself. I did post a picture of it here if you'd like to see it 🌻 I always knew there was a chance it might not make it so it's okay! I'll try again next tour maybe if I'm lucky enough to get to see him again!
I have not made that hat yet but I want to for sure!! it looks super simple like just a few granny squares which are easy enough to make. and no you're fine I love to crochet and talk about yarn or anything relating to it so it doesn't bother me at all ask as many questions as you want!!

Those crochet squares are so cute, they really do look like sunflowers! Would you mind sharing the pattern at all?
I use this pattern, it's explained very well and easy for beginners too :)
youtube
She uses a 5mm hook and 5mm wool.
I made mine with a 5mm hook but did it a little different when it comes to my wool, because I didn't have wool for 5mm needle sizes. For the sunflower I used 2 threads of 2,5-3,5mm wool and I did the white and brown part with one thread of 3,5-4,5mm wool. I did this because I'm making a patchwork cardigan and have other little squares so the sunflower granny square had to fit the measurements of the other squares, so I experimented a little with crochet hook size and wool until I got it right.
So if you just follow the tutorial with a 5mm crochet hook and 5mm hook the squares will probably come out a little bigger and thicker than mine!
P.s. I explained the wool size with the needle/hook sizes in mm because here in Belgium that's how the wool "size" is explained on the wools packaging, I know that in the UK and USA they use terms like worsted weight but I don't know how to use them :) .

Summer Sunflowers Granny Square | Free Crochet Pattern Tutorial | Saturday Stitch Explorer
Summer Sunflowers Granny Square | Free Crochet Pattern Tutorial | Saturday Stitch Explorer
Something inspired me to make a square.  I never make squares!  I don’t even like granny squares all that much. It is not that they are ugly, however, I think it is because they remind me of my grandmother old and antiquated 1970’s blankets (you remember the orange, olive green, and yellow ones right?) lol. Retro is cool too, I love retro, but I think I like a modern take on retro!
I do ❤…
