Everything Has Changed - Mckirk High School AU

Leo McCoy really did believe that he'd spend his senior year of high school studying and playing soccer, that was until about five minutes into the new school year and he met new boy Jim Kirk. Finding himself falling harder and harder for the swimmer with each passing day, Leo eventually finds himself looking at his life and wondering when everything became such a drama. Maybe he should have listened to Gaila, his best friend, when she'd told him that things don't always go to plan, no matter how much you want them too, after all.

“Everyone this is Jim Kirk,” Leo gestured, “Jim Kirk this is everyone.” He then picked his burger and took a bite to avoid further questioning.

Gaila tutted and rolled her eyes. “More specifically,” she snorted and pointed to everyone in turn as she introduced them, “I’m Gaila Thompson, sitting next to me is Carol Marcus, this is Nyota Uhura and her boyfriend Spock Grayson, that’s Pavel Chekov, but we all call him Pasha, and he’s Hikaru Sulu.” Scotty walked up then, sitting down on Leo’s other side, “and that’s Montgomery Scott.”

“Call me Scotty,” he Scotsman put in with a smile before he started picking at his own fries. 

Chatter picked up, everyone focusing on Jim, asking him questions and quickly accepting him into the group. From his friends probing Leo was able to find out that Jim had an older brother who was away at college, he lived with his mom a street over from Scotty’s house and had moved here from Iowa. He said it was because his mom, Winona, had been offered a better job but Leo didn’t quite buy it, nothing had changed in his tone but his shoulders had set slightly, and usually easy smile had become forced, his eye hardening.

When the topic of favourite sport’s came up and who supported which teams, Leo remember his talk with Pike that morning. Placing his half eaten burger down he said to the group, “I’ve been made Captain of the soccer team.”

Pandemonium ensued, his friends demanding to know how and when it had happened. He dutifully explained, Gaila reaching over to pat his cheek in congratulations when he’d finished the story, blowing him a kiss which he pretended to catch, before she turned to Jim and asked him if he played.

“Nope,” he said, popping the p, “I prefer swimming, was on the team at my old school.”

“You any good?” Leo asked.

“I suppose so,” he nodded, grinning impishly, “I was state champion for two years running in the long distance categories, and was named national champion last year, so I should hope so.” 

Stamina, that’s what the statement said to Leo. Jim had to have amazing stamina to pull those feats off and by God if that thought didn’t do dangerous things to Leo’s blood directionality. “Not too shabby,” he said in response instead of finding out just how good Jim’s stamina was. “I’ll introduce you to Coach later if you like, our swim team sucks.”

“Sure,” Jim agreed, opening up the full force of his grin of Leo and making his stomach flip, “That would be great.”
