Megumi’s being stupid. He knows he’s being stupid but he can’t help it; it’s his first date—the only date he’s ever been on—and it’s with Yuuji, how can he be expected to be calm?

Light from the theater screen flickers over their figures, giving him a clear view of Yuuji’s hand where it rests against the arm of the seat between them. They’d finished their popcorn long ago; every brush of fingers as they dug through the buttery kernels had sent electricity through Megumi’s body. He doesn’t know if he could handle actually holding that hand, when his heart has barely recovered from touches that Yuuji didn’t blink twice over, but—

But he wants to. He doesn’t care if they’re still slick with butter, or that someone in the surrounding seats might see, only that being able to hold Yuuji’s hand in a dark theater would prove that this is, in fact, a date with the boy he’s head-over-heels for. It’s something he’s wanted to do for ages now.

He wants to feel the contour of Yuuji’s palm and the rough slide of his calluses against his, the knobby ridge of his knuckles beneath his thumb. Wants to intertwine their fingers in a tight grip that they won’t give up even once it’s time to leave. He’s sure Yuuji wouldn’t mind but no matter how much he wants to, his body refuses to obey.

The movie concludes with a swell of hopeful music and Megumi’s lonesome hand still resting in his lap.

“Man, that was pretty good, huh?” Yuuji asks, stretching his arms above his head as he gets to his feet. Megumi follows, nodding in agreement even though he’s not positive of what happened for about 80% of it, too focused on his failure to pay attention.

Luckily, Yuuji seems happy to carry the conversation as he reviews the movie, hazel eyes bright with excitement as he recalls his favorite scenes. Megumi watches with a fond gaze; it was still a worthwhile experience, if it brings out Yuuji’s megawatt smile.

He listens with interest, offering commentary where he can, but mostly loses himself admiring the way Yuuji gestures and the way his expression shifts with each emotion. It’s hard not to with how enthusiastic he is over even the smallest detail.

He’s nearly forgotten about his disappointment as they walk side-by-side, contemplating where to stop for dinner, when Yuuji suddenly takes Megumi’s hand in his, tugging. Heart leaping into his throat, he follows, stepping closer to Yuuji’s side; a gust of wind chills his nape as a pedestrian flies by on their bike seconds later. Megumi watches them go, understanding washing over him.

“That was close,” Yuuji breathes, flashing a relieved smile as he squeezes Megumi’s palm. “Maybe I should hold on to you, make sure we don’t get separated.”

Blinking, Megumi can’t help the snort of laughter that escapes him at that. Yuuji pouts up at him but he waves away his concern with his free hand, explaining with mirth, “Sorry, it’s just, I spent most of the movie trying to figure out how to get here and you just—don’t you ever get nervous?”

Yuuji’s eyes widen before he chuckles too, swinging their hands childishly as they resume their walk. “Duh, I’m super nervous right now. I’m surprised you can’t tell. You’re usually so observant, it’s freaky.”

“That sounds more like an insult than a compliment,” Megumi grumbles, nudging Yuuji’s shoulder with his to knock him off balance. He gets an eye-roll and a muttered, “That's what you got from that?”

“You hide it well,” Megumi says, turning his face away as heat starts to settle in his cheeks because he, on the other hand, doesn’t hide it well. The reality of the situation is finally dawning on him: he’s actually holding Yuuji’s hand, they’re finally—wait oh my god, what if it's sweaty, what if he's—

“I’m glad you think so because my heart feels like it’s about to beat out of my chest right now,” Yuuji admits with a shaky laugh. Megumi glances at him to find his cheeks and ears painted a soft pink, belying his alleged nerves, and that incredibly endearing crooked grin of his.

And just like that, Megumi’s embarrassment fades like vapor on the wind. There’s nothing to be nervous about; this is Yuuji, the guy who asked him out with Do you like raisins? How do you feel about a date? after a heartfelt confession, who’s goofy and selfless and determined and makes Megumi indescribably happy.

Chuckling, he interlaces their fingers as he replies softly, “Yeah, mine too.” Then, because he can, he adds, “I really do like you, Yuuji.”

Yuuji stumbles beside him before righting himself, squeaking, “Megumi! God, are you trying to give me a heart attack?”

And he just laughs, delighting in his flustered expression, until he’s pulled to a stop just around a shaded corner, where Yuuji easily pays him back by pressing his smile against Megumi’s.

“I just think it’s rude,” Yuuji complains, quite justifiably in his opinion. Above him, Megumi flops back against his bed and huffs into his hands, finally giving up on the book he’s been trying to read as he ignores Yuuji’s pleas. It seems he might finally be on the edge of surrender though, so Yuuji decides one more push should do the trick.

“You’re ridiculous,” Megumi mumbles for the umpteenth time; Yuuji’s actually pretty impressed that he’s refused this long. It’s not an uncommon debate between them. He wonders why he’s being so stubborn all of the sudden.

“You’re the ridiculous one! Unlimited access to cuddles with cute animals whenever you want but you refuse to summon them unless it’s for work.” He tips his head back from his seat on the floor to pout up at him, though it’s futile seeing as Megumi’s resolutely refusing to meet his gaze. “You know what they say about all work and no play.”

“My shikigami are not pets,” he argues weakly, chancing a look at Yuuji from between his fingers which he appears to immediately regret if the long, drawn out groan he muffles against his palms is anything to go by. Yuuji grins, triumphant; he knew his puppy eyes would sway his boyfriend eventually, he just needed to make eye contact.

“You’re spoiling them,” he grumbles even as he creates the sign for Divine Dog. Yuuji cheers, wrapping his arms around the dog’s neck as it crawls out from under the bed to lay in his lap, tail thumping happily against the floor. A few rabbits appear next, hopping out from the partially-closed closet to settle against Yuuji’s available thigh. He coos at them, running his fingers through their soft fur.

It’s Megumi’s turn to pout (though he’d never admit that’s what it is). Despite his earlier declarations, he flips onto his stomach to reach over the side of the bed so he can ruffle the fur atop Divine Dog’s head. “I’m starting to think you’re only dating me to get to them.”

“Aww, don’t be jealous! I still love you best.” To prove it, Yuuji drops a chaste kiss against the edge of Megumi’s jaw, beaming at the rush of pink that blooms over his cheeks like watercolor.

There’s a comfortable silence for a moment as Megumi tries to regain his composure while Yuuji showers the shikigami with endless pats and scratches. He makes a disappointed noise in his throat when they begin to fade back into shadow after only a few minutes.

Before he can complain, Megumi demands, “Prove it then.”

Brows furrowed with confusion, he questions, “Prove what?”

“That you love me best.”

Laughter bubbles up in his chest at the petulant tone; so he 𝘸𝘢𝘴 jealous. Delighted, Yuuji gets to his knees and turns around to face Megumi, who’s lying on his back again with his head hanging over the side of the mattress, gaze haughty and expectant.

It’s only fair, he supposes. So, cupping Megumi’s face between his hands, Yuuji obediently leans in to murmur against his smiling lips, “If you insist.”
