20 anni fa

Esattamente 20 anni fa , era aprile anche allora, ero stato in questa uggiossima città tra Galles ed Inghilterra.

Allora l economia tirava il PIL cresceva, l Europa univa, jef besos mendicava, il mondo era felice, io almeno ero felice.

Le aziende prese dall' euro entusiasmo si fondevano.

E tutto tronfio mi sono fatto Virgilio coi colleghi, conosco il posto, so tutto io.ci penso io. Sperando che il mondo avesse congelato tutto in attesa del mio ritorno.

Quindi con la squadra ci siamo piazzati nello stesso hotel dove avevo soggiornato allora, era carino e di fronte c'era questo centro commerciale con un sacco di posti per mangiare.

Capisco la brexit, il COVID, le guerre ,leman Brothers, i sub prime.

Ma come stracazzo abbiamo fatto a sfasciare tutto in 20 anni?

Che in Italia vada tutto a rotoli lo diamo per scontato , ma scoprire che il mondo intero vada a ramengo è di una delusione sconfortante.

L hotel si è trasformato in peggio, metà sono monolocali con bagno e cucina (sporca). L altra metà è in stile indiano, e secondo me è una versione evoluta dei nostri centri massaggi cinesi.

Il centro commerciale avrà 8 negozi aperti su 60. Tutto in preda all incuria, ci sono molti senza tetto.

Nel frattempo nei classici capannoncini rossi all inglese sono sorte altre attività un pub, un centro di ritiro per auto vendute on line, un negozio di cinesi , uguale ai nostri e un parco di gonfiabili per bambini.

C è un po' di vita, anche se gli inglesi hanno sempre un aria molto trasandata.

@nakedandasnake and I were watching an Italian Sword and Sandal movie called Caesar the Conqueror. Since it’s been in the public domain for a while, several people had already uploaded the full film to YouTube. Snake usually prefers to watch films with the subtitles on, but the only available captions were the auto generated ones that YouTube provides. We soon learned that YouTube captions aren’t really fine tuned to pick up Ancient Roman and Gaulish names. Here are a few highlights from the night:

Gaius - Guys, Guile, and Guy.

Valerius - Hilarious.

Pompey - Bumpy.

Scribonius - Scribonius (It got that one right somehow).

Vercingetorix - Very Generous, Various General, Versus Generous, Versus Jesters.

The highlight of the film for us was when the captions called the Germanians Jungkook. Absolutely serious. Link to the movie if you want to see for yourself.

It also had a very melodramatic scene where Caesar is dictating three letter at once. The letters to Cicero and the Senate are about how the conquest is going and negotiating Publia’s marriage, and the letter to his wife is basically paragraph after paragraph of “I hate the Senate and the Senate wants to kill me and I hate Cicero and I hate Pompey and I’m probably going to fucking die here and please don’t tell Cicero that I secretly think he should go fuck himself and also I am going to save democracy.”

Un po’ di cose sul nuovo lavoro

Ho cambiato lavoro ad Ottobre 2021 ma non credo (almeno non ricordo) di averne mai scritto qua, sono bloccato a letto e mi annoio, quindi quale momento migliore per scrivere un po’ di  considerazioni varie.

 È una multinazionale britannica, e io ho sempre lavorato in medio-piccole aziende italiane. Mi spingono a consumare tutte le ferie e i permessi entro la fine dell’anno. Nelle mie esperienze precedenti in Italia, potevi prendere le ferie e i permessi sì, ma meglio “non esagerare”. Qua invece mi chiamano per dirmi “oh, ancora non le hai consumate tutte, che vogliamo fà?”.  Mi hanno pure regalato due giorni di ferie in estate, in aggiunta a quelli di contratto. 

Il primo mese e mezzo, ho fatto praticamente SOLO formazione. È anche vero che ho cambiato mestiere, perché prima ero uno sviluppatore e adesso faccio supporto tecnico, ma non mi è mai capitata una cosa del genere. Di solito dopo una settimana mi hanno buttato in acqua.

Non so se dipenda dalla legislazione britannica o sia proprio una policy aziendale, ma ho dovuto fare diverse decine di corsi obbligatori sul comportamento da tenere sul luogo di lavoro, su razzismo, molestie sessuali, parità di genere, corruzione, conflitti di interesse, rapporti con paesi sanzionati (questo a febbraio 2022, facile immaginare perché). A un certo punto durante un corso sulla corruzione, una slide accennava al fatto che accettare un regalo in un paese può essere un sintomo di possibile corruzione, ma d’altronde bisogna stare attenti anche a non offendere le usanze del Paese di chi ci ospita e ci sta facendo un regalo. Esempio utilizzato: Roma.

Il mio team è composto da me, due spagnoli, una greca e due indiani. Il manager è un italiano, e si può considerare un altro membro del team, perchè fa anche il nostro stesso lavoro. Il mio inglese è migliorato molto, ma quando parlo con certi madrelingua continuo a non capire un cazzo. Tempo fa ho fatto una sessione remota con uno stabilimento per la produzione di birra in Galles. Volevo sprofondare. 

Lavorare tutti i giorni da casa ha i suoi pro e i suoi contro. Al vecchio lavoro dovevo andare in ufficio sempre e i pantaloni corti non erano ammessi. Adesso in pratica non metto più le camicie, e vivo in pantaloni della tuta. In più, ho fatto una settimana lavorando dalla Sicilia in bassa stagione, tra granite, mare e melanzane fritte, e questo è un benefit difficilmente pareggiabile. D’altra parte parlare con degli esseri umani dal vivo mi manca un po’. Ho avuto l’impressione di non staccare mai, e allora mi sono imposto una rigide routine lavoro/pause. Inoltre, in passato mi è capitato spesso di risolvere dei problemi o trovare delle buone idee chiacchierando in pausa caffè. Il mio manager ha imposto delle call settimanali chiamate “coffee meeting” dove in teoria dovremmo parlare del più e del meno, ma finiamo sempre a parlare di lavoro, o spesso ci sono silenzi imbarazzati, direi che non è proprio la stessa cosa. Dico da mesi che dovrei trovarmi qualcosa da fare per vedere gente durante la settimana, ma rinvio in continuazione.

Il team è composto quasi del tutto da persone nuove, a parte il manager e la veterana, che però a fine mese andrà in maternità. Mi è già stato anticipato che dovrò prendermi io le sue responsabilità come “elemento di punta” del team, perché in quest’anno ho dimostrato di essere il più performante. Avrei preferito succedesse almeno tra un altro anno, quando immagino sarò riuscito a comprendere scozzesi e sudafricani. Ma d’altronde un po’ d’ansia nella vita non ce la vuoi mettere?

La maggior parte del mio lavoro precedente comprendeva molta interazione con le macchine, poca con le persone. Ora, invece, passo molto tempo a parlare via Teams e a scrivere mail, a spiegare le cose e a cercarle di capire da solo. La parte tecnica non è sparita, perché spesso devo trovare la soluzione di un problema prima di mandare la mail o fare la chiamata. Tuttavia, penso di aver aggiunto anche un po’ di skills di interazione sociale. Non so ancora se questo è il lavoro che farei per tutta la vita, però a volte mi dà belle soddisfazioni. Quanto ti colleghi, trovi e risolvi il problema che ha bloccato un impianto per ore (thanks Anto, you’re a wizard!!), ti fai una bella pera di autostima. 

Ovviamente mi pagano più di qualsiasi altra offerta avessi ricevuto/sognato di ricevere dall’Italia, e ogni anno si ridiscutono aumenti e bonus. Ma questo me l’aspettavo abbastanza, essendomi confrontato con altre persone che lavorano all’estero.

Si chiudono gli spareggi di Coppa dei Campioni

Tutte e tre le finali degli spareggi di qualificazione alla Coppa dei Campioni sono terminate: la Georgia ha battuto la Grecia 4-2 ai calci di rigore, l'Ucraina ha battuto l'Islanda 2-1 e la Polonia ha battuto il Galles 5-4 ai calci di rigore. Gli ultimi posti di qualificazione per la Coppa dei Campioni 2024 vengono conquistati da: Georgia, Ucraina e Polonia.

Il girone A comprende Germania, Scozia, Ungheria e Svizzera. Il girone B è formato da Spagna, Croazia, Italia e Albania. Il gruppo C è composto da Slovenia, Danimarca, Serbia e Inghilterra. Il gruppo D è composto da Polonia, Olanda, Austria e Francia. Il gruppo E comprende Belgio, Slovacchia, Romania e Ucraina. Il Gruppo F comprende Turchia, Georgia, Portogallo e Repubblica Ceca. La Coppa dei Campioni di quest'anno in Germania inizierà il 14 giugno e terminerà il 14 luglio, ora locale. I tifosi con indosso la maglietta nazionale Italia potranno assistere a un totale di 51 partite (36 partite della fase a gironi e 15 partite a eliminazione diretta). Oltre alla cerimonia di apertura.
