This is a project for a class i’m in. It’s going to talk about batteries! (Don’t feel obligated to read, posting online is extra credit)

Hello to all my beautiful followers! KB here again to explain a recent project I did on batteries in my lab class. Let me preface by saying that I love running this science and engineering blog, and that it wouldn’t be the same without every single one of your curious minds.

Now, don’t worry if you don’t have any background on batteries: I’ll explain how they work, give a little background on their impact on the world, and show how you can make your own little battery at home just like I did! But, be forewarned: it probably won’t power much more than a few LED lights.

As I’m sure you know, batteries power things like our homes, cars, and even the device you’re reading this post on. Batteries create chemical reactions that produce electrical energy, and slowly release this energy while powering a device. The life of a battery can last anywhere from a couple hours to a few years. When a battery powers something, the chemical reaction “pushes” electrons from one end of the battery, through the device, and then into the other end of the battery. This flow is also known as the current. To understand what’s really happening, you first have to know what they’re made of.

To break it down to its most basic components, a battery is made of two electrodes and an electrolyte. An electrode is a conductor through which electricity, or a flow of electrons, can move in and out. In batteries, there are two metal electrodes that are made of different materials (and it is important that they be different metals, otherwise the battery won’t work!). One electrode is positive, attached to a positive terminal, and called the cathode, and the other electrode is negative, connected to a negative terminal, and called the anode. The terminal is just the end surface through which the electrons enter/leave the cathode/anode. On a regular AA battery, the cathode and anode are regarded by plus and minus signs, respectively. The anode and cathode are separated from each other, and do not directly touch each other. When you connect the two electrodes with a wire, you are completing the circuit, and electrons flow from the anode into the cathode. When you put batteries into a device, take a TV remote as an example, the remote acts as the wire—the electrons flow through it, giving it the power to turn your TV channels.

Another important part of batteries is the electrolyte, and the chemical reactions that take place in it. An electrolyte is a material, typically a gel or liquid, that separates the electrodes from each other. Positive ions, or positively charged atoms, are created in a chemical reaction during which the anode loses electrons, a process known as oxidation. Simultaneously, the cathode undergoes a reaction and gains these electrons in a process called reduction. This is why it’s important that the electrodes be made of different metals; one metal will be more likely to give electrons, while the other will prefer to accept them. The electrolyte only allows for the transport of ions; electrons cannot travel through it, so electricity must go around and through a wire connecting the electrodes. A more detailed schematic is given below.

So, now you know the basic set up of a battery. There’s a positive and a negative end where electrons flow into and out of the battery, respectively, and an electrolyte in the middle in which chemical reactions take place to produce a current.

Now you understand how batteries work, but there’s still a few things you’ll need to know about the measurements you can take of a battery before you build your own. First up is voltage, a measure of the electric potential. In other words, the voltage represents how large the difference of energy is between the positive and negative electrodes. A higher voltage will result in My goal during this experiment was to get the highest voltage in my battery. Current measures the flow of electrons, or how many electrons pass through a point in a given unit of time. Current is directly proportional to voltage, so the more voltage, the higher the current. Power is a measure of how much electric energy flows through a circuit per unit time and is directly proportional to both voltage and current. Power density is how much power is in a given mass, and energy density is the energy in a given mass. Think of power density as the ability to store energy, while power density is how quickly energy can be given off. Cycle life is how many times a rechargeable battery can be charged and discharged (drained) before significant degradation in the battery’s performance occurs. A longer cycle life means the battery will last for a longer time.

I’d also like to take a moment to talk about the batteries that we use for modern technology and their impact on the world. Lithium ion batteries are one of the most prominent up-and-coming battery types because they have the ability to be recharged hundreds of times while still maintaining a long cycle life. Because of their high performance, lithium batteries are used to power our phones, laptops, and even some electric cars. A problem with these batteries is the strain on local communities when big companies try to collect the raw materials used in them. Cobalt, a rare and expensive metal used in lithium-based batteries, is mined in the Congo, but the mining is run by Congolese people with no safety equipment and little mining equipment beside hammers. These miners face dangerous work conditions, and are taken advantage of because of their proximity to the natural resource and exploited for their labor. In addition to this, cobalt is very expensive, ringing in at $26,000 per ton in 2016 (as a reference, lithium itself was $16500/ton in 2018, and aluminum was $2254/ton in 2018). The extraction of cobalt is just one of other extractions that commonly affect communities. Currently, a significant amount of research is going into producing different types of batteries. People are looking to make batteries that have cycle lives as long as lithium ones, but use less expensive and toxic raw materials.

Now that you’ve got all the background, you’re ready to make your own battery!

What you’ll need: • A plastic/rubber ice tray • Tweezers/pliers • Wire cutters/scissors • Copper wire • Zinc plated screws • 250 mL deionized water (tap is fine too) • 12 g salt (I used lab grade NaCl, but iodized salt will work just fine) • A voltmeter • Some electrical wires • LED lights (any colors are fine)

Procedure: First, using your wire cutters or scissors, cut about 7 cm of your copper and wrap it twice around the top of your screws. Use the tweezers to curl most of the extra wire, but leave enough uncurled so that it’ll fit over the lip of each ice tray cell. You’ll need to make as many screws are there are cells in your ice tray. Place one screw-wire combination over the barrier of each cell, with the copper wire in one cell and the zinc screw in the other, as in the second figure below. Use a curled pieced pf copper wire in the very first cell, with no screw attached.

Next, make a solution of water and salt using 250 mL of water and 12 g of salt. Make sure the salt is fully dissolved. Then, fill each cell with the salt solution.

Now you’re ready to test the voltage! Here’s a tutorial on setting up a voltmeter if you need some guidance (the first 2 minutes will be enough, but it’s a great video to learn more). For this set up, you’ll connect the red wire to the copper wire at the end of the tray and the black wire to the single piece of copper wire. Your voltmeter should read off a voltage of about 9V.

Taking it one step forward, you can attach an LED light to the batteries! Keep the appropriate color connections and then connect the ends to the LED. Try to connect as many as you can! (I was able to get a maximum of 4 different colors at a time)

What Happened? Now, let’s relate some concepts we learned earlier to the experiment you just did. In this experiment, each cell actually acts as a its own battery. The copper wire is acting as the cathode, and is gaining electrons through reduction, while the zinc screws are the anode, and are losing electrons via oxidation. For this particular battery, mass is also being transported between electrodes; during the chemical reaction of the anode, positively charge ions are being formed from the zinc screws and are flowing through the electrolyte to the copper wires. The salt water solution is acting as the electrolyte and is allowing the ions to flow to the copper wires, where they build up. This mass transport is the reason you want to coil the copper wire; there’s more surface area for the reaction to occur on. If you allowed this to go on for a long time, you would see that the zinc screws lose mass and that the copper wires gain the difference. The picture below gives a visual explanation of what’s happening in each cell when you complete the circuit by connecting the voltmeter or LED light to each electrode.

The ions move from the anode to the cathode in the solution, while electrons flow through the “wire,” either being the voltmeter or the LED lights. A cool feature about batteries is that you can align several in a row, or “in series,” and their voltages will add together. If you measure the voltage of just one cell, you’ll get a voltage of about 0.64 V, assuming you used an ice tray of 14 cells.

I had fun making this battery myself. Something that surprised me during the fabrication process was that deionized water worked better than regular tap water. I figured the reasoning for this was because tap water has several different components, such as fluoride and other additives, that physically bump into the ions trying to move from the anode to the cathode. Another thing I learned is that your battery will have a higher voltage if you increase the temperature of the water. This draws on the fact that atoms and molecules move faster at higher temperatures, so the ions are able to move around faster in the water.

All kinds of batteries are being made and tested for different variables, such as the voltage, current, power, power density, and energy density. We’re currently mining and extracted the raw materials for lithium batteries in places and at rates that are unsustainable. My hope is that a cheaper alternative can be found sometime in our near future. In the meantime, maybe you could start doing some research of you own, and learn about energy and batteries to help shape our future.

Jan 2021 Wins

ive “journaled” for 6 months now. it started as small ___ wins because when you feel rly empty, even doing the bare minimum feels like a win. written down some of the wins. i think until now i’d like to keep the “win” part. a win against my shadow sometimes. a win in life. some things to be grateful for. a win for remembering it later in the future. i know some days im just basically doing nothing.  there are a lot of wars not won by me. but im still tryna ✨manifest✨

1 - woke up. watched bts’ 2021 seasons greetings. read trap city. afternoon nap. pupuy’s mbah passed away. i got DOMS in my body even though i did the barest of exercise yesterday (frail, i know). shower, matcha latte.

2 - the x banner atikah and i sent for racil post thesis defense has arrived lmaoo. mom made delicious (and sweet) fried banana. did some studying (more than usual, bcs the bar is on the floor)

3 - ate muesli, 3 risols. Kopsus coklat at flavola. Stayed there from 12-ish to 17:30 lmaooo. weekly bahas soal w/ fi. Rapat nemo

4 - first day of collab module. Barely cicil ukmppd. My mood is normal-ish but i hardly have the will to study. Dinner is fried fish with mentai sauce, potato wedges, and saladdd by mom

5 - collab module, qa presentation for rsui reps. finished reviewing tryout 2 solid. did padi pretest (got 66,5). ate chicken porridge, a bit of muesli and vsoy, tan ek tjoan bread, matcha latte, fish and chicken and potato wedges and salad, fried banana. i ate well today lol.

6 - slept during collab webinar, went to clara’s place to study osce and attended padi together. i ate well at clara’s placeee lol. ate nastar, kusuka, white kwetiaw with soup (?), and lele goreng. went back home @ 9 pm. i feel refreshed. even though we’ve half studied half mukbang all day. human interaction rly does heal me. i need human interaction more than i think. at night i dreamed about going to bali, to waterparks, seeing sea creatures, watching a movie displayed on a concert-like stage and screen at the front row. 

7 - woke up at 07:55, finished my part for collab group work. felt a bit tired today. the rest of fam went to DM, and when they were on the way back i HURRIED my way out, not even taking a shower lmaoo. got pistachio matcha latte at starbucks dm. now im more skilled in searching the best spot in a cafe to distance myself from people lmao. the matcha latte is served with some sort of pistachio cream and sprinkled with nuts on top. its like when sbux had taro matcha latte and it had purple cream on top. the pistachio taste is quite strong. reviewed TO 1 padi, sent proposals for nemo sponsorship.

8 - did syndrome try out and padi 2 web try out. studied for osce and padi @ clara’s place. wanted to order pizza since clara bought me food before, but she insisted in ordering lmaoo. so dinner is pizza hut

9 - woke up at 11.00 lmao. havent had breakfast. lunch is muesli with the brand new delishhh chocolate granola and cimory banana milk. did one shot try out, got 71. had a google meet with Prof Agus (that ethics book ghostwriting job from a year ago is not finished until now huaaa) that went from 20.00ish and finished at 22.30,,,,, reviewed syndrome try out along the way. havent made my collab self reflection hhhh. i also need to study for osce. also havent edited article for bukang solid. and there goes my saturday nooo

10 - i swear i keep waking up late lmao. Flavola w atikah, racheel later came with wawa. Kopsus coklat and ukmppd class w dr yudo. After class i just talked at flavola (and ended not studying osce at all for sunday). Went to racheel's to pray and talk some more. Hurriedly went back for booty call with fi, watched konser dies natalis first. Tryout and sum study with fi and clar that went from 20:30 to 00:10. Powered by left over kopsus and 2 snackit pia. Rip my sleeping schedule

11 - woke up at 10:30 ish, the lack of meal and horrible sleep pattern (for my standard) produced stuffy nose during the day and a bit of headache that went away for a bit after i ate. Late bfast is muesli, drank protein, ate tan ek tjoan, plus 2 brownies in the evening. Tht coaching w dr niken. Did self reflection for collab. Had dinner without rice, as usual. Ukmppd class w dr ayu. Finished reflection at 21:30 lmao (deadline is 23:55). Tryna sleep and my nose is still itchy and i sneeze a more often. i hope it goes away 2mrw

12 - DV coaching, scele tryout, took a nap before padi cause my head kind of hurts. Les padi while drinking matcha with vsoy less sugar and no added sugar. I can withstand the horrible sugarless cy matcha taste bcs theres a taste of soy. Didnt do anything else. Havent studied osce on my own until now. Astagfirullah

13 - my head still kind of aches. Its goes away when im eating. im eating so well during the weekdays that i gained 2kgs lmao. lazed around the first half of the day. padi. finally tried saint matcha and damnn its an amazing upgrade from Cy matcha. the green color is super different yall. Cy’s green looks sick and tired compared to saint matcha. the taste? immaculate (although coco deli is more fragrant). caffeine? hits. awake and feel normal? yes. messaged an ao3 author and got replied and turns out she’s making a sequel for my fav fic of hers. yay

14 - osce practice w ara ren ness. bedah and anak osce coaching. had 3 of mom’s cinnamon rolls and matcha latte for the afternoon. cicil osce DV. edited some pld articles. did nothing else basically

15 - wasted my day, didnt have the courage to study osce (i feel like i procrastinate on it bcs it feels overwhelming to me), TO FKUI 2, hurriedly reviewed to 1 before, les padi. i feel like this is the least focused im being in a les. maybe its the too few matcha powder.

16 - woke up at 9 am. breakfast is muesli. reviewed to 2 fkui w apa salahku (finished at 12 pm, there goes half of my saturday). tried fried chicken master. its good and tender but i still prefer moon chicken. 

17 - breakfast is muesli, banana and 2 martabak tahu. snack is keripik pisang aduuu wenak (and picking bits of meat cooked by mom). went to devi’s place w/ racheel silvi. brought RJ to be wrapped. we watched okay madam and its super fun, hilarious and full of twists anddd a bit of cutesy romance. just the right balance to enjoy and let the stress out. late lunch is moon chicken yay!! went home after maghrib, did to padi 6 w/ fi and matcha latte. talked about a senior’s wedding and eating healthier til 22:30

18 - To fkui 3, wasted my afternoon playing my phone, finally mustered some will to study after ashar. My progress is rly slow today. Watched hilarious jessi interview with eric, heechul. Im telling u, i thought tiktok is the funniest internet content but i was wronggg. Seeing heechul flustered is hilarious. Tried to study again at night but only learned 1 disease hiks

19 - had no idea what i did before dzuhur lmao. went to racheel’s to surprise atikah. actually napped at her place lmaoo why do i feel so sleepy. gifted rj to atikah. we ate fried chicken master and pempek on a small green table and talked. its like korean movie lmao. we talked while im simultaneously listening to padi lol.

20 - woke up at 8, chicken porridge + muesli and low sugar vsoy for breakfast. arrived at clara’s @10am. to fkui 4. reviewed it. reviewed general physical exam. finished up to padi 7. tried bombo donut. studied osce. i felt sooo dumb in osce (and clara is already super smart). superrr motivated to learn after going back home (arrived at 7) but i ended up opening youtube and drinking protein lmaooo and its suddenly 9 pm

21 - matcha latte at starbucks dm. Studied osce. Obgyn coaching w the super kind dr ilham. Les padi. Read angel buddy and played with my phone til 12 pm

22 - to fkui. padi as usual. had low motivation, so i did the tryout that day close to the actual course.

23 - left home at 06:30 to study together in capitol. had breakfast in mcd first. thank god i ate rice + chicken and breakfast wrap cuzzzz. studied osce together w ara, ical, kelvyn, dio and kak ilonka til about 2 pm. WALKED to bk bcs my parents are there. apparently simply driving to capitol is too much for them. immediately ate muesli at 4 pm cause i didnt eat anything in capitol. did nothing else after that. did not pray maghrib together lmao somehow mom had mercy on me and let me sleep som more. mom bought sate padang but i didnt eat it. i cried in bed because as yoongi said, “this is the real you and this is the real me”. did not shower/wash my face at night bcs i felt like shit lmao rip my face (its a week before bukang photoshoot)

24 - i feel tired, lazy, and just wanted some sleep. like all that’s in me is drained. ate muesli with strawberry milk. tried fitmee beef. its better than i thought. because the noodle is chewy you spend more time to chew. also ate fried chicken and daun singkong. usually i cant wait to go to flavola but even at 12 pm i just feel like laying down. finally mustered the will to shower and go out. its raining a bit on the way. colddd. 

25 - to fkui 6, osce briefing, covid lecture (that was actually for ppds), padi

29 - today is bukang photoshoot at bintaro. put base make up on the way. even put glue on my eyebrow. got eyebrow, eyeshadow and blush done by renata. took lots of photos. nebeng om coro afterwards to bxc to meet mom. we ate at genki sushi (renata ara kris mendel oca regan geordie eka). i missss road trips hua. did tryout fkui on the way back home. after shower and prayer proceeded to review TO with apa salahku. GENERAL STUFF

went for school, study abroad trip to study visualization and simulation of “serious games” that businesses buy and use (but i dont feel like talking abt it since this is the FUN POST

may 10-26

the flight was 11 hours, p easy, i didn’t know anybody going into the trip because i didn’t go to any of the meetings HAHhaHEHA

whatever. everyone on the trip initially came off as if they had yellow fever and i was like ... i’m really not trying to interact with FETISHIZERS

turns out they were all really cool! only this one kid was a real weeaboo who was greasy and tall and a neckbeard who kept talking about being “culturally insensitive” and speaking japanese constantly to the teacher and the TA like ... ok patrick we get it you flex

i stayed in a hotel in shinjuku! everything is so small and i used the bidets for the first time and WOO chile that shit feels FUNKY on your asshole

i visited shinjuku major (kabukicho aka red light district, couple other places!), ikebukuro (THE MEGA POKEMON CENTER), mt fuji, fuji q highland, akihabara, hamamatsucho (area where tokyo tower is), HARAJUKU, and the emperor’s palace! i’m probably forgetting some places since we went to a lot of temples and shrines that were cool ...

the public transportation in japan is scarily on time.. like, by the second. they apologize if they’re one minute early and will wait until the scheduled time before they move omg

the subway stations have their own jingles! they kind of act as an alarm system because a lot of people sleep on the subway (which is why people generally don’t talk on it) and will recognize the jingle for their stop!

the crowded hours on the subway are noon and 6-8pm... like, its insane. it’s actually packed like sardines in there. 

EVERYONE THERE IS SO SHORT.... i was taller than a lot of the grown men there (i’m 5′4″ or 162 cm for reference) and most people were around 5 feet tall... the only people taller than me were some kids around my age and this gaggle of japanese schoolgirls who were like 5′7+ and i was like. sis you’re 13, why are you that tall

pokemon is EXTREMELY prevalent in japan wherever you go. there’s pikachu stickers on taxis, pikachu is on ads on the subway and at the AIRPORT, pokemon go is widely played by a lot of people and so many of the people in my group played it so i got conned into playing again. i leveled up 5 times within 3 days and honestly? i’m god

anime is very normal there... i know that sounds all “weeby” but a lot of normal shops had animated mascots and there were ads for anime all over the place. 

literally gacha machines everywhere i spent a lot of coins on gacha machines plz kill me

the homies in japan loooove crepes. they sold so many crepes. everywhere. just crepes. also spaghetti carbonara! and corndogs HAHAHA

the food there is so cheap but SOOO GOOD. sushi isn’t all that expensive at all?? like a set of 16 pieces is 1080Y... meanwhile that cost in america is like. $6000 HAHAHAHAH. 

very humid? at all times? also the RAIN is debilitating if u make one wrong step you will slip and die (like i did! i stepped on a tile and fucking fell into a puddle! i have bruises still!)

SHINJUKU (detective pikachu day, may 10)

i went to go see detective pikachu on its release day in shinjuku! before that, i went to a couple sega buildings--

the sega buildings are 4 story buildings FILLED with claw machines holding stuffed animals, figurines, candy, all kinds of stuff. when i went, there was a lot of detective pikachu-related stuff. i saw this detective pikachu hat in one of the machines and spent 1000Y (about $10) or 10 attempts at the claw machine ... i still can’t believe i got it ... nobody was there to see it besides me and i YELLED when it dropped 

i wore the hat that entire day around shinjuku because i honestly felt like god. people would point at me and go like “ah! meitantei pikachu!” and smile at me. i was a celebrity. i wore the hat into the movie theatre, i wore it through the entire movie, and when i was walking out, someone tapped on my shoulder and asked for my picture. she was all nervous about her english and was like “i love your hat. may i take a picture?” and i was like omG YES U CAN... sweet bab... so that’s the first photo of me that ended up on some random person’s phone

we waited around for the mass of people to exit the theatre and then left, and we ran into her again! she asked me more questions about the hat: “did you make it?” “no, i got it in a claw machine in the sega building.” she looked dumbfounded. “in shinjuku?” “yes.” “in the sega building? over there?” “yeees.” “in a claw machine?!” “yes!” “ah! i thought you made it! it’s so cute! i’m going to get one for myself.” “lol ok have fun”

i learned that its customary to stay until the very end of the credits before leaving a movie out of respect for the people who made it! meanwhile in america we walk out when the credits roll FHDSKFJS OOPIES

SHINJUKU (visit #2)

we went in the night time to go see the red light district aka kabuki-cho because thats where a lot of the bars are

i don’t drink so i didn’t join the people who went to the bars to get CRUNK, so i dragged two other guys with me and we walked around the red light district

I SAW SO MANY HOST CLUBS. so many maid cafes. so many bars. i saw a love hotel too... i was like... i wanna go inside... Blease... and my friends were like “you’re so weird KHEDJFSk” and im like “I WAS GOOGLING THESE IN CLASS TODAY, I DIDN’T THINK THEY WERE REAL”

my friend sean (he’s from taipei, cool guy, could read a lot of the kanji so we used him to navigate the subway HAHA) was walking with me that night and we saw this hole in the wall that had stairs going down to a peep show ... homegirl had her whole ass out on the sign... tiddies covered with caution tape ... i said MAAM?

one of the signs in kabuki-cho had a woman doing straight up ahegao with (what i’m pretty sure was) nut on her face. it was a small sign and i was the only one who saw it. i lost my shit. it was the funniest thing ever

kabuki-cho is really really dirty... like people straight up litter all the time bc there’s no trashcans around? so people throw their shit on the ground? and everyone steps on it... very seedy area, very gross, but i was absolutely enthralled with the nightlife and the blatant sexual vibes half the places had!

on the 2rd floor is the MEGA POKEMON CENTER!!! i was so HYPED to go in there!!! it was teeming with people but there was just... so much stuff. all kinds of merch. they had plushies of the original 151, a shitton of really cool tshirts, a whole block for detective pikachu-themed merch (pins, socks, canvas bags, shirts, patches, hats, etc), and sooo much more. there’s a giant charizard statue when you walk in, as well as a statue of a pokestop HAHA. i was so excited and i wanted to buy so many things when i was in there bc they had stuff for all the legendaries (LATIOS AND LATIAS STUFF WERE THERE I WAS SO HAPPY)!!! literally anything you can think of, they had in some kind of pokemon print. including underwear. yeah i said it. here’s a really good article that showcases some of the stuff they sold there!

for reference, 100 yen is about 1 usd. a lot of things there were 480 yen ($4.80) or 3000Y ($30) and it was just... beautiful.

OKAY SO. there’s this place called super potato that has a floor dedicated to old games and consoles. they had so many gameboy advances and gamecubes and old consoles (famicom, dreamcast etc) for CHEAP. they had a gameboy color for 4900Y and a gamecube for 5600Y. a bitch almost cried. they had every old pokemon game under the sun (the original red, blue, yellow, gold and silver) and i ,,, they were 480Y. they were 480Y. that’s five fucking dollars. do you know how much collectors pay for that shit on ebay? HUNDREDS. i could’ve mass bought those and sold them and made so much cash but I DIDN’T.

that store had an original unopened copy of super smash bros melee and pokemon colosseum and i was like... wait if i cop a gamecube i could play pokemon collosseum like a true g... ((i didn’t cop))

when i found out about fuji-q, i told my group that we HAD to go. i didn’t want to go to an onsen. i wanted to go to fuji-q. i had to. i love rollercoasters, it’s my passion, my driving fORCE IN LIFE

so fuji-q is home to 4 record-breaking rollercoasters! u got fast boi aka jojo reference do-dodonpa; EXTREME TALL BOI fujiyama; superior to x2 at six flags eejanaika; and the steepest rollercoaster in the world TAKABISHA ... i got to ride fujiyama, eejanaika, and takabisha! the scariest one was probably fujiyama despite it being very cut and dry up for... ever ... 79 meters ... oh god ... i lost my shit on the way down ladies let me TELL YOU

FUJIYAMA ALSO HAS A VIEW OF MT FUJI AND I WAS LIK E”YO GUYS ITS MT FUJI” and then we went down and i screamed

anyways the fuji-q park was having a sword art online collaboration when i visited, so they played SAO music and had cardboard cutouts for them across the park... kirito’s ride was fujiyama (aka the king of them all). i forgot the other ones but those alicization kiddos were there but ion care about ALICE OR EUGEO

the first ride i went on was eejanaika which is a 4d rollercoaster, pretty epic, total Baby Ride though

i went on as a single rider so i ended up getting put in this group with these college kids! the guy i was sitting next to spoke to me in english and asked basic questions: “where are you from?”, “is this [ride] easy for you?”, “how old are you?”, basic stuff. he asked why i was in japan and i told him i was studying at waseda university, and he immediately perked up and went “I GO TO WASEDA!!! WASEDA YEAH!!!” and fist bumped me ... his friends were giggling and kept asking him to ask me questions and it was just. so wholesome.

#840 Boult nailed it for MI and Rohit gave the hammer blow against DC in finals to hand MI their 5th IPL ; A class team, a fine captain and flawless bowling attack was key aspects in MI dominating IPL this season; Dustin Johnson all set to win his 2nd major after gaining 4 shot lead after 3 rounds in Augusta Masters; ATP finale kick starts; Man City show some form in drawing against Liverpool; Aston Villa shock Arsenal and more..:-)

IPL finals usually is a closely contested match if one observes history. Baring 2011 and 2015, all have almost gone to the wire. DC won the toss and hose to bat as expected. Post that it was all MI. Boult who was traded from DC prior to this season dismissed Stoinis first ball with a ripper. Inside 21 balls, DC were reduced to 22-3. Boult grabbed 2 of the wickets. Jayant dismissed Dhawan with a bit of genuine off spin. That was a telling blow for DC. Shreyas and Pant brought DC back with a good partnership. They took DC past 100. Pant scored his first fifty of this year’s IPL. Just when it looked like Pant would take MI to cleaners, Coulter dismissed him with a short ball. DC 118-4 in 15 overs. Even though Shreyas played till the end, DC never got going. They just scored 38 runs from last 5 overs. Boult ended with 3-30. MI’s team is a well oiled engine. There is hardly any weakness. They have only been tested when team scores in excess of 190 against them. Only RCB managed that this year. Once Quinton and Rohit had 45 run opening stand in 4 overs, writing as on the wall for DC. Rohit showed some form with 51 ball 68. MI won their 5th IPL title by 5 wickets with 8 balls to spare. It was not even a contest. Boult never allowed MI to feel the absence of Malinga. Bumrah, Rahul Chahar, MI engine trio of Pollard-Krunal-Hardik , Quinton and Ishan’s form and Surya’s calming influence ensure MI were never under pressure throughout the tournament.  Their team is so good that captaincy doesn’t really matter. Each player knows their role very well. You can make in roads in IPL with good top order but solid middle order and death bowling decides who wins it. MI have that in plenty in last 2 seasons. CSK had Bravo-Jadeja-Dhoni when they were at peak. SRH had Rashid, Mustafizur and Bhuvi when they had to defend scores in 2016. Teams like RCB and KKR need to invest in this else they would find winning IPL very tough in coming years.  MI are very active during trading window and auction. That’s needed. Other than they ensure their youngsters get enough exposure. Ishan Kishan has been a classic example in last 2 seasons . He has been a revelation. Pandya was impactful as well. Rohit and Krunal have had poor seasons but they had so many match winners that it was never felt. Player like Lynn never got a match which tells a lot. RCB did a mistake of releasing Rahul and Manish when they were good. All IPL seasons have been won by teams who have best local Indian talent rather than best overseas bunch. With next IPL just 6 months away, all team’s thinking tank would go back to drawing board to see whom they need to pick if an auction happens before that.  Focus now shifts to India-Aus tours. India have Australia tour and England tour of India between them and World test championships finals. NZ are favourites mto be in top 2 as they have home tour of WI and Pak and they can grab as many as 240 points from that. India, Australia and England would fight for other spot as far as I am concerned. India need to ensure that they don’t allow Australia to win more than 2 tests and expect them to whitewash England. Fitness of players is key due to this aspect. Considering this, was it worth playing Rohit in last 3 games ??  He has already been termed as unfit for ODI and T20. It has given a wrong signal that playing for IPL has been given more priority than playing for India. This is not a good trend. Mi would still have won IPL without Rohit. Risk was not worthy. Hope he gets to form in test as its very much needed since Virat is ruled out for 3 tests. He would play his first innings in pink ball test in Adelaide. That’s a tough ask. Hope he shows his class as it would hurt India otherwise !!

ATP finale group has been finalized. Djokovic, Zverev, Medvedev and Schwartzman are in one group. Nadal, Tsitsipas, Thiem and Rublev are in other group.  Nadal has never won this title. His game has never suited indoor carpet.  Djokovic has won it 5 times and would equal record set by Federer who has won this a historic 6 times. Last 4 years had new champions which was refreshing (Murray, Dimitrov, Zverev and Tsitsipas).

Augusta masters was held in Autumn season for the first time in history. Casey and Johnson started off with a bang. They had 7 under score of 65. It was a dream start for the 2 of them. Casey’s game fell apart in 2nd and 3rd round..
