It seemed anxiety, bordering on near panic, was going to become a constant state of being for Aelin. Gone was the self-assured, cool, confident, and collected woman of the past. Everything she had been, known, hoped, wanted… it all seemed painfully stuck in the past, as unmovable of the mountain peaks surrounding the city.
Perhaps if therapy had been attended, as suggested by a multitude of her friends on more than one occasion, the necessary tools to address how she was feeling would be handily available. In her toolkit. Having to endure needles in her eyes sounded more preferable than attending therapy, so naturally, she had not gone, preferring to shoulder her emotional baggage.
The emotional turmoil of today was stemming from her reluctantly agreed upon dinner at Rowan’s cabin. It had been the price to pay for his visit to her the book shop yesterday. The smart part of her brain screamed no, but a too quick “yes” produced by her messy heart had passed over her lips instead. And it was an answer she’d give and give again just to see the smile that had graced his handsome face, setting his green eyes alight with joy. When this ended, because she knew it would, there was no doubt in her mind, that she would be the proverbial cannon fodder of this situation.
Wincing as she hit a particularly rough pothole, Aelin made a large mental note to chastise Rowan for it. The winter season had only worsened the already shit road and SUV be damned, it didn’t seem to make it any more bearable. Fleetfoot shifted her footing in the passenger seat, glancing over, giving a judgmental look.
“Don’t look at me like that, it’s not my fault this road isn’t maintained,” she muttered in contempt.
Lucky for both the golden-haired girls, the A-frame cabin was soon in few, lit by beautiful glass bulbs strung from tree to trees. While his house wasn’t her style, much preferring luxury and the things accustomed with the that lifestyle, there was something perfect about the view she had now. It was quieter than even where she lived. And if possible, it seemed more stars could be seen winking in the sky. The light blues and purple of dusk were fading away into dark blues and black as the sun continued its decent below the horizon.
Cutting the engine, Aelin sat a moment, taking in two large breaths and talked herself down from the anxiety that was clawing violently up her throat. There was no reason to be nervous, not really, if you got past the fact she was spending another evening in his presence, in the home that would one day house his family…
Fine. Everything was perfectly fine. That was the mantra that would headline the forefront of her mind tonight—it had to be. The alternative distressingly cruel.
“Let’s go, girl.” Fleetfoot didn’t need to be told twice, bounding over her lap and out the car door, rounding the corner of the house before her feet had even touched the pine needle ground.
“Well, someone was eager,” she grumbled under her breath as she followed the same path the dog had taken. The backdoor was open, spilling added light across the porch and grass. Chairs circled a firepit that had already had a crackling fire within it. Blankets hung on the back of two chairs. Her mouth watered as a small breeze kissed her skin, bringing with it the smell of garlic and a little spice. The silver haired man had refused to tell her what they were doing, other than he was making her dinner, which he also decided to withhold what it was they would be eating.
Gently, she knocked against the door trim before walking in. Rowan gave her a smile as he lowered a wooden spoon down from his lips and set it down on the counter. “Couldn’t wait for a taste?”
“A cook always has to sample the dish before serving it to others. I wouldn’t want feed you something terrible.”
“My refined palate appreciates that.”
Rowan rolled his eyes, but the small laugh let her know he knew she was just being difficult. She took a seat at the bar top that overlooked the stove. The meal looked simple but it smelled divine, especially with her sitting almost directly over it. “Are you going to tell me what’s on the menu now that I’m here?”
“You’re insufferable sometimes. I hope you realize that,” he answered, flicking her nose.
“I’m wonderful, thank you very much. The only intolerable one here is you.”
“Keep it up and I’ll give the dogs your plate and your part of the dessert.” His face was straight, no slight tick in his jaw or arch of a brow to tell if he was kidding. The discarded spoon was picked back up and used to stir whatever sauce was simmering on the stove top.
Worrying her lip, Aelin said nothing but continued to watch him mill about the kitchen. He flicked off the burners and bent down, giving her a better view of the kitchen. It was like a beacon in the dark, the small image pinned to the fridge with a magnet, that immediately ensnared her wandering gaze. A heavy unease settled in the pit of her stomach the longer she stared at the photo. His tall frame appeared back in her view, but he might as well have been invisible because she just kept staring—a very tangible feeling of nauseousness working up her throat.
Rowan was going to be a father to a baby that would be here before they both knew it. And he would be filling his spare time with raising him or her. Cooking meals in this very kitchen and coming home to someone who Aelin couldn’t stand. Until now, a small part of her had been delusional, quietly whispering that he would still have time for her when it came down to it. But he wouldn’t. This man would be all in for that life that hung proudly against the silver fridge face.
In the haze of her tunnel vision, she had missed him moving until he was turning the stool and pulling her against warm, muscled chest. His heart was thrumming erratically against her ear. This man was far from dumb and likely knew just the reason for her terror-struck silence. “Aelin,” his voiced pleaded against the crown of her head.
“What are we doing Ro?” she cried into him.
“We’re having dinner.”
“That’s not what I’m talking about,” Aelin declared, shoving her palms against his stomach in a paltry attempt to put distance between them. He gripped her harder, snuffing out the hope for any separation.
“Rowan, let me go,” she begged, the words vibrating against them both.
“I can’t, Fireheart.”
“Rowan, there’s a baby on your fridge. Your baby. It’s growing and some months from now, it’s going to be more than just a black and white decoration to look at.” He was lying to himself if he thought he could keeping living his life like this and it broke her heart because he didn’t seem to have an iota about it.
“Aelin, you don’t think I know that?” he barked angrily, stepping back and bumping into another stool. It’s high-pitched squeal making her look up at him. Loosing a frustrated breath, his green eyes weighed heavily on her.
“I can’t change that. I know I’m going to be a dad and it wasn’t how I thought my journey to fatherhood would go, but I know more than anyone, that July is going to bring so many changes. So don’t sit there and preach at me about that stupid black and white photo. I didn’t even put it up there. Lyria did. It’s from when she first found out and it’s a blob. It doesn’t even look like a baby.”
From her vantagepoint, it looked like a potato. Gods, likening a baby to a potato was surely going to get her some gods-given karma down the line. Unsure of what to say to the passionate, yet angry monologue, Aelin elected silence.
“I’m scared out of my mind, but I’m excited, too. Some little human out there is going to call me dad. And I’m going to read poetry to them every night before they go to bed and take them hiking on Saturdays with my friends. I’m going to stroll the streets of downtown Orynth, telling them about a time when there used to be a queen and kind of this country, and how the opalescent buildings were an unheard-of masterpiece when they designed and built. I’m going to take them to Emrys’ and introduce cake when they’re old enough. And we’ll see you when we come to buy books because I want them to know 1,000 different lives. I have to make the most of what I’ve been dealt.”
Tears burned, falling for herself, and falling for the man at her front. Rowan loved that baby, and it was beautiful to see it. But the life he painted; it made her envious. What would a life like that, with him, be like? Would they fight about what book to read? What would be the first poem they would read to their child? Would he get the history just right having not grown up here? Would she have to correct him with a teasing smile?
“What if” was the most painful start to any self-harm idea her brain and heart could muster. What if she had met him a few months sooner? What if it had been her and not Lyria? What if Lyria hadn’t been pregnant at all?
What if. What if. What if.
Calloused thumbs swooped across the swell of her cheeks, wiping away the moisture sliding down. He tilted her head, catching her gaze with his. “There’s a limit to what I can give you, Aelin. I know that, but I’m trying to be here, for you. And if that’s enough for now, then let it be enough. And when it’s not, ask me again to let you go.”
It was appropriate to say while he cradled her in his hands—the declaration literal and figurative and a bittersweet understanding. She knew that whatever unspoken thing tying them together didn’t adhere to the constructs of reason or reality—it unapologetically existed. And for now, the small kernels of time and of himself that Rowan offered to her were enough.
However, they’d both be nothing but fools if they believed with any real hope that this would last beyond July. The gods didn’t cater to mortal whims, not even love or desire, despite what countless words penned in books tried to argue. Aelin knew this better than anyone having suffered unbelievably so in the face of the cards she had been dealt.
Before her parents had died, Arobynn betrayed everyone, and her uncle and cousins’ unwitting complicity in his schemes, her life had been one of unwavering love, joy, and happiness. Every day was not sunshine and roses, but there hadn’t been one thing she’d willingly change.
It occurred to her that she had not offered any sort of response to Rowan’s quiet plea apart from silence. With a rueful twitch of her pink lips, she said hardly audible, “Okay.” The two syllables tasted acerb against her tongue, but she’d utter them again and again if it meant he’d look at her the way he was now.  With one last smooth stroke against the apples of her cheeks, he asked, “Are you hungry?”
Aelin gave an enthusiastic nod, which had him freeing her and returning to the other side of the counter, dishing out food onto two plates in a manner that could only be described as routine.  A quick jerk of his head silently commanded her to follow him as he took their dinner outside. Once she was seated comfortably in one of the chairs surrounding the fire, did he pass her a plate and take his own seat.
The first few bites had her letting out a low moan that had no right appearing anywhere except within the confines of her bedroom—but damn the gods, she couldn’t help herself. Rowan sounded like he was semi-choking across from her and it made a small, feline smirk of delight grace her lips. There was power in the knowledge that she could and did fluster the man.
Deciding to spare him anymore discomfort, she mercifully kept her indecent sounds and thoughts to herself for the remainder of their dinner which fell into a pleasant, companionable silence. Gently, she discarded the plate on the ground beside her and leaned back into the chair, taking a sip from her beer, and looking up at the stars. Millions of tiny light balls gleamed back at her, some stark white, others hardly more than a dull glow.
“When I was a kid, my parents used to tell me that the stars were all the people that we’d lost looking down on us. It used to make me so upset because I thought it was ridiculous and at that point, I had already learned that they were balls of exploding gas. But as I got older and lost them, I came to the decision that their explanation was the only one I wanted to possess any conviction for. At the very least, it’s a far more beautiful sentiment than any scientific truth.”
Aelin refused to look anywhere but up, not wanting to see pity, understanding, comfort—anything in response to her confession. Vulnerability made her feel weak and broken and she’d shown Rowan more of herself in the months of their friendship than she’d shown must people in years. He was constantly disarming her; strategically knocking a stone loose from the wall she’d armed herself with and with the right move, it would irreparably crumble.
It was inevitable. It was coming. And she wasn’t ready yet… but she wanted to be. Living as a ghost of herself was exhausting and depressing and life was passing her by. Aelin had been a victim of life, of shitty circumstances, and had endured things some people could never imagine even on their worst day.  There was more to go through, so much to face and work through, but in the perfect silence of this starlit night, it felt like her parents were by her side, reminding her they’d never left, not really.
“I wish someone would have told me stories like that,” his voice said a little gruff. Hesitantly, she flicked her blue and gold gaze his way, admiring how the firelight played off the sharp angles of his jaw. His green gaze was trained on the sky above as he continued. “I’m not sure if you’ve been to Doranelle but it’s so different from Orynth. I’m not sure if it’s because it’s the largest city east of Wendlyn or because it’s a main trade port for many routes, but it’s never quiet. Something is always going on.”
She’d been once, as a young teenager on holiday with her family, and if she thought hard enough about it, she could almost taste the spice-laden air and hear the vendors selling their wares along the winding, elegant streets. Beautiful pale stone buildings with blue tops and mosaic tiles decorating their walls stood out in her brain.  And their palace with its jasmine-wrapped columns and stained glasses ceilings were such a stark contrast from Orynth’s own palace of shimmering opal walls.
“It wasn’t until I was older that I knew the sky held so many stars. The bright lights of the city in culmination with the pale stone buildings, rivers, and mist make it eerily bright all the time. The sun and moon obey the same laws there, but night never seems as dark as it ought to be.  Not like here, where on a moonless night, you can’t see five feet in front you. It’s beautiful at home and I was privileged growing up there, but when I was able to see more of the world, I realized there were somethings more beautiful than others.”
His piercing green gaze dropped to hers and held as he said the last part. For someone who wasn’t entirely forthcoming and made it seem like sharing personal information was akin to pulling teeth sans anesthetic, Rowan was a born storyteller. Perhaps, it was because she was sweet on him, but she was more inclined to believe it was in the way he spoke about things. His accent grew thicker, voice lower, his body more relaxed, and green eyes a little brighter.
“I went one summer after I had turned fourteen or fifteen, I can’t quite remember. We traveled every summer for my belated birthday gift. My parents wanted me to be well-rounded and to know the world. That year, Gavriel and Aedion were able to come with us. We’d traveled before as a family but never that far, for that long. It felt nice to just be ourselves without constantly wondering if photographers and journalists were going to be writing about what we were wearing, or what restaurant we frequented, or what new bill my father or mother were trying to pass.”
She loosed a bitter chuckle and picked a little too angrily at her cuticles, causing one to bleed. Rowan’s large hand rested over hers, snuffing out the anxious tendency before she could cause more damage.
“Fireheart, what happened with your uncle and your cousin? I know Elide said they betrayed you, but I saw how your face lit up when you talked about them. It’s clear you miss them. Your parents aren’t here but from what I’ve gathered, they are. You don’t have to tell me. I can feel you stiffening under my hands and you’re holding your breath. Gods, I know it’s painful for you, but you don’t have to carry around those feelings by yourself.  There are so many people in your corner who would be more than happy to shoulder some of that weight… You just have to stop holding on to it so tight.”
That wall of hers? Well, there went another stone or two as he laced their fingers together, his gentle but not subtle offer to bare her grief ringing loudly in her ears, as though he had shouted it for the heavens to hear. It wasn’t that her friends hadn’t offered their ears or shoulders before, because they all had, numerous times, but she’d been too devastated to let any ounce of control go. Then, came Rowan, no better than an avalanche bulldozing a mountain full of trees, decimating everything in its wake.
He pushed when she didn’t want to be pushed. Held her when she didn’t know that’s what she wanted. Listened to her fall apart and stayed anyways. He wasn’t perfect. He had hurt her and likely would hurt here more in the future, but in their skewed dynamic, he had given her room to breathe. In shouldering of all the messy, the bad, the dramatic—it had lessened that crippling burden she’d been carrying around for years to just enough to remind her that there was more to life than what she’d been accepting.
And for his gift, she would give him another ugly truth despite the possibility of it opening up an emotional chasm deeper than any fissure on this continent. “I didn’t know how corrupt Arobynn was. To me, in most everything before and for two years after the death of my parents, I just saw him as ‘Uncle A’, my godfather and dad’s best friend. Every holiday, family birthday, fancy gala—he was there. He was my rock after it all. Him and Aedion and Gavriel.”
Aelin shifted forward in her seat and adjusted their still laced fingers on her knee, not wanting to lose the grounding contact, but unable to bare his dark emerald gaze a second longer. It seemed childish to hide, but sometimes if felt like he could see into the very darkest parts of her soul, the ones she didn’t offer up or acknowledge, and that level of discomfort was threatening to flicker out the small tendril of courage she was gripping onto.
“I didn’t know the extent of their involvement in his seedy underground dealings until the middle of the trial. Gavriel was the chair of the historical and restoration department for the city, appointed by my mother. Nepotism at its finest, I know. He had his own construction company as well and Aedion grew up learning from him. After college, he took over more responsibility in the company, leaving Gavriel to devote more time to the public and political aspects of restoring the city. Little did I know then that their company built and restored many underground areas of the city. I think at first, they didn’t realize that they were paving the network that would feed into success of The Vaults, but it became very clear, later on, that they knew. They knew and they continued anyways.”
She gave a harsh chuckle, the notion of their part in the crime syndicate somehow still bitterly amusing years later. Only amusing because they’d let themselves be deceived in the face of overwhelming evidence. Hardly any of the evidence of their involvement had been presented at trial when the betrayal had cut through her like a hot blade. Aedion’s eyes, so like her own, had found her in the sea of people within that room, brimming with guilt and unshed tears. He had looked devastated.
But she had been devastated. And blind-sided. And betrayed.  And hurt. And angry.
Again, she had been made a fool at the hands of those who supposedly cared for her. A public spectacle for all the court-goes to gawk at while she crumpled in the front row.
Absent-mindedly, she rubbed at her chest, a poor attempt to soothe the ghost of twinging pain. “I don’t know what Arobynn had over my uncle, but I know it had to have been something because why else would you help a criminal? Half the city’s tunnels existed when we still had a monarch. They deserved the chance to be restored and appreciated. The finished result though surpassed what was initially documented and planned but that didn’t come to light until the underground syndicate was dismantled. No one could figure out how criminals were thwarting law enforcement left and right and all along, the answer was right under their feet.”
“I hadn’t been here long when crime started to uptick. I got mugged outside my truck one night and it was like the guy disappeared into thin air. I tried to chase him but when I turned the corner, there was nothing but empty streets. Makes sense now,” he remarked in an acrimonious tone.
“Manholes, specific businesses, canals… everyone who belonged to the Vaults learned where and how they could use these tunnels to their advantages. Arobynn had his finger in everything from prostitution and drugs to street fighting and ordered hits. When you sit at the right hand of the country’s governor, you make a lot of connections, and he used every one of them to his advantage. My uncle and Aedion redid all the tunnels as my mother asked, but they built new ones seamlessly connected too, creating an intricate and unmarked web unless you knew where to look. Had it not helped Arobynn’s rise to power and criminal empire, I might be impressed.”
Feeling restless and angry, she abruptly stood from her chair and took a few steps back. The air around the fire too warm. Rowan’s hand too heavy. The feelings still too raw.
“I didn’t stay the rest of the day Aedion and Gavriel testified, and I ignored every attempt they made to explain themselves since. There was nothing they were going to say to me that could make their involvement any less painful. I know all the charges were dropped after they disclosed the tunnel maps and trade routes for product moving in and out of the city. I think I could have forgiven just the tunnels, in time, but Aedion was helping run the street fights and Gavriel knew what businesses were operating under the table. I just can’t help but think had they spoken up about Arobynn’s illegal dealings, he might not have had the network, power, or capital to have had my parents murdered.”
And there it was. The repulsive, dark truth that had been festering deep within the walls of her heart for years. Resentment and hate bitterly clamored up her throat as she bent over, hands braced on her thighs, gasping for air.  Was she a monster for having no understanding, no compassion for her family? Was she wrong to blame them? Was she as cruel as Arobynn?
The world started to tip, black spots filling her vision as her knees buckled and the ground growing increasingly closer. Familiar muscle flushed against the side of her body, guiding her delicately down. “I don’t know much Fireheart, but there is no world in which you could ever compare to a man like that.”
One hand held firm against the crown of her head, keeping her upright, while the other ran long, soothing strokes down her back. Nothing else was said between them as they sat there. It could have been five minutes or two hours—Aelin wasn’t sure, but she thanked the gods for the still silence and for the friend she’d found in Rowan. Tonight, had been one of courage and candor, and she had faced it head on.
She had not yielded when her heart and head had been screaming otherwise. The world, her world was shifting. It was a dull throb somewhere in the depths of her bones, demanding to be felt, noticed.
Change was coming and she would no longer be afraid.

Your scale/graph of Anthro/Intelligent Animal Media brings up some interesting questions about how other furry-adjacent media fits in the system. Zootopia, for example, has enough modern human elements to reach a similar area as Robin Hood, but the characters being animals and the societal structure that creates is a big part of the main plot. Madagascar, on the other hand, has animals that can alternate between bipedal and quadropedal movement, use or even create tools and machinery but, while they can communicate just fine with other animals, in-universe humans can’t understand them, and they maintain the habits and social structure (or at least the general idea) from their IRL counterparts. To an extent that the zoo animals have idyllic aspirations of returning to “The Wild” and abandoning their more humanoid lifestyle.
Zootopia is non-euclidean furryspace! and was in fact the example I was thinking of when I said that if you go any further along the scale than Redwall, you are no longer writing anthropomorphic fiction, you're writing a normal story with anthro characters in it.
(Essentially, I have to respectfully disagree; the characters being animals isn't a plot point, because they're not "animals". They're furries. They are as much "animals" as humans are, ie, yeah but only in a taxonomic technicality. Their animalistic TRAITS are a plot point, but at that point, you're not writing a story about how animals navigate through and see the world, which is an essential part of writing actual anthropomorphic fiction. It's kind of in the name--when a story stops being about ANIMALS with PEOPLE traits, and starts being about PEOPLE with ANIMAL traits, you leave the "anthropomorphic fiction" genre.)
Madagascar on the other hand is a FASCINATING example!
Let's see. The Y axis, I'd place it--oh god dammit i JUST noticed that I never fixed a placement glitch/misclick. Somehow WD ended up further right than Black Beauty and Aristocats which is nonsensical. Fuck. That's gonna piss me off so bad--Sorry. Anyway.
The z-axis (degree of "talking animals" present) SEEMS like it would be the most straightforward. We see Alex trying to talk to humans and all they hear is roaring, so we already know that there's a lot of artistic license going on in terms of what WE see vs what IN-UNIVERSE HUMANS see. However they clearly don't realize this is happening, so I'd put it decently left of center--the animals understand and engage with humans to such a degree that they genuinely believe humans can understand them back.
The thing that makes its placement on the other axes tricky is the aforementioned translation convention. Like....it's obvious that what humans are seeing during Madagascar appears to them to be normal animal behavior. Presumably, they're NOT actually bipedal and that's just an artistic representation of how in-tune the characters are with their instincts at any given time.
On the X axis? Genuinely no idea--obviously they don't have a lot of natural behaviors, but that's because they're born and raised in captivity and have zero forms of natural enrichment in their unbelievably shitty enclosures (just saying). The presence of that translation convention where we KNOW that from a human perspective their behavior is interpreted as not outside the realm of believability makes it difficult.
That being said, the zookeepers clearly are aware of Marty's stash of birthday gifts over the years and Alex implies he was able to PURCHASE or otherwise request his own merchandise so I'm gonna put us pretty far left on the animalistic behavior scale.
This next bit would be easier if I'd phrased the y-axis better--I was genuinely struggling to put it into words, and I don't think I did a great job. Probably it would be better summarized as "animal culture replicates human culture" so we'll use that.
ALL the way at the bottom. It's made clear that there really is no "animal" culture. The zoo animals are fish out of water, but that's because they're New Yorkers dropped in a Madagascar jungle. The lemurs are not exhibiting what we're meant to view as natural lemur behavior; they even refer to Alex starting to exhibit natural behavior as "going savage" in a way they don't even seem to view the fossa hunters. So there's no unconnected, distinct animal cultures going on here. (Or, if they exist in theory somewhere, they are literally never depicted and their theoretical existence is actively denied at every opportunity.)
...
god im SO mad about that like. fraction of an inch off on WD's alignment on the chart this is going to haunt me for YEARS--

Journaling has done more for me than rehab and therapy ever did. Why? Bc no one gives a fuck about what you to say. It sucks, but that’s the reality.
Even the trained “professionals” who called me by Borderline and not even by my name.
Getting me to even show up and stay clean was hard enough. But having to check in with 4 other counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists, DBT classes, it still didn’t do much for me at all. No one was really listening to me.
But journaling is the perfect outlet for me. I can scream my truth into my writing, which always validates what I am feeling. I’ve had nothing in my life besides gaslighting and resistance.
I’ve come to the conclusion that people are dedicated to misunderstanding me.
Journaling for Emotional Wellness
When you were a teenager, you might have kept a diary hidden under your mattress. It was a place to confess your struggles and fears without judgment or punishment. It likely felt good to get all of those thoughts and feelings out of your head and down on paper. The world seemed clearer.
You may have stopped using a diary once you reached adulthood. But the concept and its benefits still apply as a grown up. Now it’s called journaling. It's simply writing down your thoughts and feelings to understand them more clearly. And if you struggle with stress, depression, or anxiety, keeping a journal can be a great idea. It can help you gain control of your emotions and improve your mental health.
Journaling benefits
One of the ways to deal with any overwhelming emotion is to find a healthy way to express yourself. This makes a journal a helpful tool in managing your mental health. Journaling can help you:
Manage anxiety
Reduce stress
Cope with depression
Journaling helps control your symptoms and improve your mood by:
Helping you prioritize problems, fears, and concerns
Tracking any symptoms day-to-day so that you can recognize triggers and learn ways to better control them
Providing an opportunity for positive self-talk and identifying negative thoughts and behaviors
When you have a problem and you're stressed, keeping a journal can help you identify what’s causing that stress or anxiety. Once you’ve identified your stressors, you can work on a plan to resolve the problems and reduce your stress.
Keep in mind that journaling is just one aspect of a healthy lifestyle for better managing stress, anxiety, and mental health conditions. To get the most benefits, be sure you also:
Relax and meditate each day.
Eat a healthy, balanced diet.
Exercise regularly—get in some activity every day.
Treat yourself to plenty of sleep each night.
Stay away from alcohol and drugs.
Use your journal to make sure you follow these guidelines daily.
How to journal
Try these tips to help you get started with journaling:
Try to write every day. Set aside a few minutes every day to write. This will help you to write in your journal regularly.
Make it easy. Keep a pen and paper handy at all times. Then when you want to write down your thoughts, you can. You can also keep a journal on your smartphone.
Write or draw whatever feels right. Your journal doesn't need to follow any certain structure. It's your own private place to discuss and create whatever you want to express your feelings. Let the words and ideas flow freely. Don't worry about spelling mistakes or what other people might think.
Use your journal as you see fit. You don't have to share your journal with anyone. If you do want to share some of your thoughts with trusted friends and loved ones, you could show them parts of your journal.
Keeping a journal helps you create order when your world feels like it’s in chaos. You get to know yourself by revealing your most private fears, thoughts, and feelings. Look at your writing time as personal relaxation time. It's a time when you can de-stress and wind down. Write in a place that's relaxing and soothing, maybe with a cup of tea. Look forward to your journaling time. And know that you're doing something good for your mind and body.

So, technically his bio still needs one more part, namely his dog. However I REALLY wanted to tick off his bio from my to-do list today, so I'll add the dog here later. (I haven't decided on which suggested breed to go for yet)
Thank you @spokelseskladden for helping me with the name stuff and the dog! And ofc, the whole penguin thing with him was originally an idea by my friend @mad-hatter-rici that I chose to keep for his new incarnation.
Also, in his case I can say that he is meant to be specifically Norwegian, though not from our world's Norway. (Typically my characters aren't from actual IRL countries or places, but this story has at least a version of it) I initially planned on giving him a more of a common surname, but then I saw this one and just...c'mon he's a fictional character, I had to give him something a bit more special lmao
Bio below:
Age: 22
Family: Family lives elsewhere in a larger city, an uncle who owns the cabin he lives in currently. (not named rn as I probably won't have them appear much, so their appearance or name isn't relevant)
Friends: Araknos family, Any friend of Clover in general, his classmates in general...he's a friendly guy. His bestie is his dog, Alva
Love interest: Clover Belmont, a witchboy from Mirror World, a paraller reality to the human world
Occupation: Grocery store clerk/Wilderness guide student at vocational college/housekeeper for his uncle's cabin
He's just a human, just some guy, just that one sweet dude that's a lil weird and seems to believe in fairies.
Abilities:
He's good at surviving in the wilderness both summer and winter, as he's essentially grown up spending most of his time outdoors. He can recognize edible/poisonous plants and mushrooms, how to build an emergency hut, first aid, good crafting skills for makeshift tools etc.
He's an excellent cook and knows how to take anyone's food preferences/needs into accordance.
He's a very good fisherman (or just patient enough lol)
Due to his lifestyle, Henrik is fairly strong physically and has good stamina
Magic tattoo; he can communicate with Clover with his tattoo, and they can tell each other's moods and if one needs help through it. He can also use the tattoo to contact either its maker (Jurou) or Clover's adoptive father if he senses Clover is in trouble.
He has a surprisingly strong danger sense and can tell if something is off either in his surroundings, or with a person. He can just pick up on someone's "bad vibes" pretty much.
Personality:
Henrik is very sweet, hospitable and friendly guy, who is willing to help people in need. He's a bit naive too and easy to trick, but chooses to still have faith in people and believe in them - unless they very obviously show to him they're bad. he approached people with good faith, but once you fuck up, you do need to prove yourself as he won't forgive that easily depending on what was done.
He has almost childlike curiosity towards everything, and even if he doesn't necessarily understand topics, he enjoys listening to people who do. He genuinely always tries to understand it, but even if he doesn't, he won't beat himself up too bad, or pretend he does.
He can be a bit oblivious and sometimes forget things, like switching out of pajamas when leaving his home. His dog Alva often has to bring him stuff he forgets, or otherwise remind him of things. Sometimes she even drags him out of bed when he's being lazy.
Weaknesses:
Dude's a human in a world of mythical creatures, monsters, demons and witches, he's pretty weak and fragile in grand scheme of things.
His seemingly gullible nature makes him easy to trick with more harmless things; if someone dangerous tries to manipulate him, he tends to pick up on that. But pulling a prank on him and hiding his slippers or putting a kick-me note on his back? Easy peasy.
He tends to overestimate himself and gets hurt a lot, such as what happened with the bear spirit. The main reason he doesn't have more scars yet, is thanks to his magic friends healing away most of them.
The scar he has does sometimes ache, and on worse days can force him to be bedridden the whole day with pain and nausea.
Fun Facts
His dog Alva may not be an entirely average dog, but she refuses to tell her secrets even to a fellow dog, an Inugami (Japanese dog spirit) called Raitei
Henrik enjoys carving and painting small wooden animals on his free time, and he tends to make a lot of penguins and dogs.
Penguins are his favorite animals, and he'd love to travel to a place that has them in nature someday. His love for them comes from being given a penguin plushtoy as a kid by his grandma, shortly before she died. it's been his inseparable friend since then, and he named it Sven. (He still has Sven to this day)
Henrik has learned some Japanese from Clover, who, while living in the mirror world, is technically of Japanese origin so his native language is Japanese.
Mostly he communicates with Clover and others through the natural effect of Mirror World, where it allows everyone to understand each other's languages. This effect became applicable on him only after he got his tattoo; before that they both spoke English as it was the only common language they shared. (Clover also speaks German and French, as his adoptive dad speaks those alongside English)
He has taught Clover some words in Norwegian, mainly curses because he asked lol
Due to Clover's condition, typically when he visits he makes sure to have some of his special food enhancement dust with him, so he'll be able to get full from Henrik's cooking properly.
Henrik is pan
He likes dyeing his hair split-colored; the blond is his natural shade. He mostly goes for natural-ish shades for the dye job, like browns or blacks or coppery reds.
if fully open, he does have slightly long front bangs. He tends to only open his braids when he needs to really wash his hair properly though. (or when reapplying the dye)
many of his classmates have had crushes on him, and they are aware that he supposedly has a long-distance relationship with a Japanese person. (some doubt it'll last, others are more curious)
Despite being introduced with lot of powerful and scary magic things, Henrik is still very open-minded about it all and likes to learn more. It doesn't mean he's not scared of Clover's world, but he loves it despite his fears, as human world can be terrible as well.
He lost his tooth and got the scar on a hiking incident some years back, where he fell and hit his face against a rock.
The bear spirit thing happened during the second ever visit Clover did. In the end Clover's adoptive parent Angus had to deal with it and help save him. The scar was too severe to be fully healed, but most of the time it doesn't have any impact on his life; it starts causing pains and nausea only occasionally, due to being magical origin.
He chose to live in the cabin instead of an apartment, as he wanted to be close to nature while studying, and its not that far from his small college anyway. It even has internet!

So I’ve been thinking a lot about the word “Use”.
Tumblr media
It’s a very… big word, really— despite only being three letters long. Of course you have the standard definition, the verb: utilizing something as the means to some end (whatever that may be). Like “I USED my car to go get groceries”, stuff like that. That’s not the definition I’ve been thinking about.
Rather— Well, I guess it is, in a sense. I more so mean the societal use-case. The idea of “Use” being what you can PROVIDE. What USE do you have to, say, your friends, or your family, or, most notably, your JOB?
At the end of the day, the quality of the rewards you reap for working is directly proportional to how much (and of what quality) can you provide FOR the sake of the company’s growth— and to this it’s not too unlike a living organism. After all, we’ve evolved to take on protobacteria to help digest our food: they serve a USE to the system. But that’s an empirical definition of the term. In terms of lifestyle (in regards to work), it’s both social AND physical expectation.
Tumblr media
Like, not only are you expected to do your job, you’re expected to SMILE doing it. You’re expected to always, somewhere, at some point, be doing SOMETHING to widen the profit margin of the company, even when its not quite apparent what all there even is TO do. It’s why most associates in retail that work behind a counter (i’m talking stuff like paint or tool rental, not cashiers, since they have to stay in place— though this counts for them to a lesser extent), You’re EXPECTED to either stay there, standing on concrete, hands steepled and smiling at the wall for eight hours— or find something else to do, like sweeping, or…
… No, seriously, what ELSE is there?
Well, you need to figure it out some way or another, or that “use” you provide… becomes use… LESS.
Tumblr media
Useless. Frivolous. Unneeded. Pointless. You serve no USE, no gain to the system, and your value is appraised as such by everyone else.
You have NO use. Your negatives outweigh the positives. A leech mooching revenue, however small you my be.
You know, I was really dedicated to this job when I started. But now, with each new career, it’s been getting harder and harder to keep myself feeling… useful. I get comfortable. Too comfortable. I start slacking— but not even! I still do all my work— i just get… Comfortable. And then i fuck SOMETHING up that makes me, well, useless. Rinse and repeat.
Why couldn’t I even make it two months this time before I fucked up?
My job skipped all warnings and went straight to final warning for my first offense because I accidentally skipped a crucial step in the process for ONE transaction. To say I’m scared is… an understatement. I’ve hardly ever lasted six months in a job, and that’s how long I’ll have to wait for that final warning to fall off. At any moment, management can kick me out. They already scheduled a new guy full time the exact hours I was supposed to get full time— instead I’m “part time” (read: 39 hours 30 minutes a week).
I feel… Useless. Why does everyone make this look so easy?
These are supposed to be the simplest tasks, and yet I’m only good at them for a couple months at best before i just break under pressure. And I can’t NOT work, I need money, and I can’t get disability because my myriad of issues hasn’t been diagnosed yet.
Tumblr media
Going to work today there was a stifling fog over my head. Like I knew that today could very well be my last day here. I know it probably isn’t, but… Well, right before I clocked out, my other coworkers were talking about how something hadn’t gotten checked in and charged some poor bloke for a week. I certainly hope I don’t take the fall for that.

Sometimes the dark object of desire can turn out to be a disappointment. The legendary Arsenal, a place where you could find something that gave you power over the world. A dream of many sect leaders, unattainable and therefore desirable. Episode 36 WOH. Last. We reached the goal together with the main characters. The goal that WKX set for himself when he found out that he could find a Ying Yang book there that could help in healing ZZS. WKX knew well that no one but him and ZZS would be able to open the Arsenal. Certainly both ZZS and WKX had their ideas of what should be in the Arsenal. For many years it was believed that a magical weapon was hidden in it that would allow the one who possesses it to have unlimited power over the world. WKX and ZZS were the only ones to enter the Arsenal, but a snow avalanche cut off their way back. They could only go deep inside and learn the secret of this place. They knew that there were books belonging to legendary sects in it, but WKX was surprised that some of the books were about agriculture. The arsenal also contained stocks of grain and agricultural tools. Nowhere did any of our heroes find this magical weapon of which legends circulated. This matter troubled ZZS, and finally, as he knelt down and sifted grain through his fingers, he discovered the answer. It wasn't about weaponry, new models of weapons or other conquest items. Behind the prosperity of the state, behind a strong state, there was a well-fed nation, what was the treasure hidden in the Arsenal was knowledge, knowledge about the cultivation of the land, because the land yields crops and feeds both subjects and rulers. Without well-organized agriculture, there is no prosperity in the country, this is what ZZS discovered and shared with WKX.
Finding the book of Ying Yang was a revelation for WKX, he finally had something in his hand that would allow him to cure ZZS the rest did not matter much to him. ZZS as the leader of the sect knew how important a well-organized food supply is for the existence of the sect. This photo of ZZS kneeling is significant. He discovers a secret, he is a little puzzled, puzzled, but understands the essence of the fact that there are no weapons in the arsenal. This scene speaks to me strongly, it carries a kind of message that is important for the prosperity of the country - in the historical period in which the action of the series takes place. We know that when man made tools for cultivating the land and started sowing and irrigating it, he stopped leading a nomadic lifestyle. The land he cultivated became his mainstay, he built a house, it was the beginning, and thus the nucleus of the state was formed. In those days, a country based on agriculture. The basis was agriculture, not only the cultivation of cereals, rice, but also animal husbandry. Well-organized agriculture made the state grow in strength. It was Arsenal's secret. I like such historical references in series, they show certain realities, even though the action is set in a rather indefinite historical time. I like history, I like discovering unknown historical facts and thinking about the consequences of certain actions. I have been delving into Chinese history for over 2 years. I know I probably won't get to know her the way I'd like to, but I took the first step. I am slowly discovering the most fascinating corner of the world and its changes over the centuries. But enough about me. We return to the photo. Apart from the telling scene, I like the composition, the gray-blue walls of the arsenal and the brown sacks of grain. In the center are our two main characters dressed in robes of very dark colors. WKX's maroon outer robe is a kind of counterbalance to the dark blue ZZS robe. ZZS stares at the seed while WKX stands over him with the book of Ying Yang with a questioning look on his face. Even then, WKX didn't know what price he would have to pay for treating his ZZS. I like the simplicity of this scene and the way ZZH and WKX conveyed it. It was a moment where I hoped the gentlemen might still find a way to leave the arsenal. But those were just my dreams.

The Digital Fashion Takeover
How Instagram replaced fashion magazines as the most trusted source of information for trend-conscious and fashionable women in Japan.
An Analog Country
There is this widely disseminated belief that Japan is a hi-tech paradise. But it only exists among people who are not very familiar with Japan. The truth is that it is an analog country. Its population is old-fashioned and much more suspicious of new technologies than the global average. That is why we are in 2022, and there are still fax machines, DVD rental services, and CD stores all over Japan.
So it is unsurprising that the internet didn't really "happen" in Japan as fast as in the West and the rest of Asia. In the early 2000s, households with multiple computers were commonplace in several countries. People were fastly adapting to this new reality where the internet was at the center of everything. The effects of this were being felt, with the start of the music industry collapse due to piracy, etc.
Meanwhile, the internet was still a mysterious beast in the Land of the Rising Sun. A household would maybe have one laptop for the whole family to share. Things like instant messaging and downloading music were unheard of. And the leading way people would connect with the World Wide Web was not through a computer but their modest flip phones.
Modest for modern standards, of course. Because while this idea of Japan as a particularly technologically advanced country is a bit outdated, it used to be true in the 1980s. And maybe even in the 90s and early 2000s. Japanese cell phones were a great example of that. There, mobile phones became widespread much more quicker. While we could not do much with ours besides some amateur texting and maybe playing that snake game, the Japanese cells were equipped with cameras, e-mail, and web browsers. Cellphones in Japan were a much more potent social tool than anywhere else. That was especially true among young women.
But that meant the way your average Japanese person would experience the internet was very different and much more modest because the possibilities when browsing the web through a computer were much broader. Through a flip phone, your options were severely limited.
The Hold of the Fashion Magazines
Despite being suspicious of the internet, the Japanese were early adopters of online shopping. This phenomenon could be read as a sign of incoming changes in the fashion industry. But, by the turn of the century, the supremacy of fashion magazines felt unthreatened. The idea of the internet as an endless source of information was already commonplace globally but not in Japan. Plus, the Japanese are old-fashioned. Ergo the reliability and tradition represented by those mags couldn't easily be replicated by the new technologies.
By the mid-2000s, however, fashionable Japanese girls were already using the internet to complement their fashion knowledge, with local blog platforms like Ameblo, Jugem, and Yaplog hosting countless personal blogs focused on clothes, cosmetics, and style and lifestyle trends. At that time, a staple of the Japanese internet experience was already noticeable: an obsession with privacy and anonymity. Japanese fashion bloggers were mostly anonymous, showing their clothing items spread on their beds or against cute backdrops but rarely on them. Pics of their faces were always pixelated or with little hearts blocking any recognizable feature.
The exception was popular fashion models who also started populating blog platforms. Before influencers existed, these models were already filling this role in Japan. They showed their lifestyle, shared what's inside their luxury brand bags, showed off their favorite clothes and cosmetics, and gave tips on beauty and lifestyle. Traditionally, they did this on the pages of the fashion magazines they represented, yet, by the late 2000s, they were also doing it in their blogs. Fashion brands also started jumping on the trend, using Ameblo and Yaplog to inform customers of new products, introduce sales clerks' clothes and tips, etc.
Still, those blogs weren't fully cannibalizing fashion magazine sales. Yes, they were full of pictures. But those pixelated cellphone pics couldn't realistically compete with the high-quality images and in-depth details you could find in the pages of the (very thick and visual-heavy) magazines. Back then, blogs were a complement to magazines.
Digital Takeover
But in 2008, the launch of the iPhone in Japan led to seismic changes. Expectations were high because the iPod was a big success in the country. But Japan is old-fashioned and traditional, and the Apple phone, with its unique no-keyboard design, had a slow start. Eventually, though, sales picked up, and suddenly, iPhones were everywhere. The traditional Japanese cellphone was dead and was officially replaced by the smartphone. For the first time, almost everyone had the internet in its full, unfiltered format in the palm of their hand.
Cellphones became a potent, widespread tool in Japan much earlier than in the rest of the world. The internet, not so much. But, by the end of the 2000s, both things were almost identical. The digital fashion takeover had officially (albeit a bit belatedly) begun.
The takeover was complete when Instagram officially replaced fashion magazines as the primary source of information and trend dissemination in the country.
The More Things Change...
Instagram brought changes to the Japanese fashion landscape. Information traveled quicker. Without the gatekeeping of magazines, fashion tribes became even more fluid. It became easier to track trends and more difficult because niches aren't as organized as before. And the obsession with anonymity diminished a bit.
But old habits die hard.
Especially in Japan. So tribes -- despite not necessarily having an easily identifiable name -- are still neatly divided. Each tribe still has its fashion leaders and influencers. Women aren't as gung-ho about being anonymous as before, with plenty of users putting their faces out there, but maintaining your anonymity isn't rare. Heck, even some of the most famous YouTubers in Japan don't show their faces.
And anyway, Japanese fashion magazines were perfect precursors to Instagram. Consequently, the transition has been somewhat seamless. Magazines were very visual-oriented, with hardly any text and a total focus on pictures and aesthetics. They had models that filled the same role as influencers. They had "readers models" (dokusha moderus aka dokumos), readers selected to appear in the title due to their slightly above average looks and aspirational lifestyles, creating a "real life" bond with the public. All of those aspects can be found nowadays on the Facebook-owned app.
So are things different? Yes, especially from afar. But deep down, the traditions remained unchanged, which is just how Japan likes it.

Born to Style
The definition of fashion is that it is "a popular trend, especially in styles of dress and ornament or manners of behavior," however the term includes much more. Our choices of clothes frequently serve as our strongest and most visible means of self-expression. Everyone can tell by our clothing choices how we view ourselves and the kind of person we are. besides being a unique form of performance art, fashion shows promote the economy and create jobs for a large number of people, including the designer who creates the original ideas, the outfitter who makes the clothing, and the agent who makes the sale to us.
Unquestionably, fashion enhances people's appearance and/or self-esteem, making them look and feel more beautiful compared to what they normally would be. One of the art forms that helps people feel good about themselves and look their best is fashion, which is accessible to people of various genders, ethnicities, sizes, backgrounds, and lifestyles. Fashion presents things in the best possible light, which is why it has such an idealistic quality. However, there is another aspect of fashion that aims to subvert traditional ideas of beauty; it seeks to change people's views and put out new ideas of what can be considered beautiful. Unlike any other art form, the beauty that is often created in fashion is incredibly short lived, it's a moment. At its best, it burns brightly and quickly and can never be duplicated. That ability to change, to constantly renew itself is probably what makes fashion so intriguing to me. I love that you can look at one designer's work within a given period of time and see the change, whether it's blatant and revolutionary or subtle and evolutionary. You can't always appreciate that journey from one thing to the next in other art forms; it's usually only in hindsight that you can see it. As for what fashion is, besides being an extension of personality, or a mood, or a way of expressing inner creativity, it's also a kind of mask fashion provides a sort of transformative quality, the effect that an item of clothing can have on the way people see you and the way you might see yourself is inherently profound. There's something about feeling your best that brings out a confidence in you that you didn't realize you had. Despite how much fashion deals with the surface, it's the effect it has on the way you feel as opposed to the way you look that makes it so amazing in my opinion.
When people find out someone is interested in fashion (or clothes, or style, or shopping, or whatever word you’re using to describe it), their first assumption is normally that the person is vain, empty-headed, or just plain stupid but if we don’t buy clothes because we want people to tell us we’re pretty, why do I do it? My personal journey in the fashion industry has been a fascinating one, filled with creativity, self-discovery, and a changing sense of who I am. For me, fashion evolved into a tool for self-discovery and a way to express aspects of my identity that words often fail to express. Every decision I made, regardless of whether it was a daring statement item or a delicate accessory, added to the story of the person I am and want to be. I started to think of clothes as a form of art. I was captivated by the creativity that was found in the fashion industry, from street style to runway displays. The intricate designs, innovative fabrics, and boundary-pushing concepts demonstrated the transformative power of fashion as a medium of art. Traditional gender norms in fashion are being challenged by Gen Z. The generation is embracing gender-fluid styles, rejecting the notion that clothing should be confined to societal expectations. This shift is not only reshaping the fashion landscape but also contributing to a broader cultural conversation about gender identity and expression.
