Hi hi! So the lost tombs and chronology all super confuse me. So tlt2 ended on a cliffhanger that was not resolved by tlt3 which is ultimate note, but now there is another tlt3 that I am guessing is made by the same studio as tlt2 (but not UN) that actually follows tlt2? And it has the same WPZ as tlt2 (but sadly different WX, ZQL though I’m sure these guys are great). You seem to know what you’re talking about so I’m hoping you can help!

UN also ended on a cliff hanger so I’m wondering if they’ll get a sequel from their studio that comes before tomb of the sea.

ahhh hello anon! yes ahaha the dmbj dramas are certainly very confusing--because they keep switching the screenwriters/entire production team between dramas. huanrui did tlt1 (2015), tlt2 (2019), and the sequel to tlt2 (2021). they're also technically the production company for un (2020), but linghe did like all the directing/casting/writing so its significantly different in tone and quality from the other dramas huanrui produced. npss (dmbj author) did sha hai (2018) and tltr (2020), with sha hai being in collab with linghe, so you can see lots of parallels with un and shared cast. (gonna add that i dont know much about the m9 because that’s not what im personally interested in, so i’m only going by stories with wu xie & the iron triangle.)

unfortunately, the dramas pretty have no continuity as a result of all the weird shit and multiple studios doing different dramas and messy stuff going on behind the scenes. the author's production company currently has all the rights back for filming future dramas, which is......imo, a good thing for book fans who love the author but a 😬 thing for book fans who like the original story more than what the author is now doing with it. I'll uh avoid saying too much opinion stuff though so no more on that 😅

that aside! yes 云顶天宫 “explore with the note” part 2......is the direct sequel to tlt2 and done by the same studio. unfortunately the writers are different and im not sure how much of the production team is the same either. idk how much you know about the novels so brief summary here--for the chinese version, the main story has 9 parts split among 8 books (though the official eng tls have each part being a different book) with some important content being as follows:

official eng title “cavern of blood zombies” (first time wx goes into a tomb, first t3j meeting)

official eng title “angry sea, hidden sands” (xisha seabed tomb, introduce a-ning)

official eng title “bronze tree of death” (bronze tree in qinling, wx & lao yang solo adventure)

official eng title “palace of doom” (heavenly palace on the clouds, introduce bronze gate)

btw between sha hai and chongqi there’s also ten years later (a short story) that covers how wu xie and pangzi pick up xiaoge from the bronze gate and take him home

盗墓笔记 / the lost tomb 1 (2015): covers part 1 but with major OCs and filler, and includes the auction scene from part 8 for some reason, so introduces xiao hua early.

怒海潜沙&秦岭神树 / the lost tomb 2 (2019) technically “explore with the note”: covers parts 2 & 3 but with major OCs and filler, introduces xiao hua & xiuxiu (and hei xiazi briefly) early. last couple episodes also cover the beginning of part 4. not a direct sequel to tlt1 despite being done by the same studio.

云顶天宫 / heavenly palace on the clouds (2021) technically also “explore with the note”: covers part 4 with major OCs and filler (and the same changes carrying over from tlt2). some episodes are identical to the last couple episodes of tlt2. works as a direct sequel only if you ignore the last couple episodes of tlt2 that take place in the snowy mountains. (those episodes of tlt2 were filmed after this drama was filmed, and im still not sure why they dragged the wu xie and xiaoge from tlt2 back to changbai mountain to film those episodes.)

终极笔记 / ultimate note (2020): covers parts 5-8 with minor OCs and minimal filler, also introduces xiao hua & xiuxiu early. the only adaptation that resembles its source material most of the time.

沙海 / tomb of the sea (2018): covers the second sequel with major OCs and filler. includes some bits from zhh and the short story “three days of silence”.

重启之极海听雷 / the lost tomb reboot (2020): covers third sequel with major OCs and filler.

in addition there is the prequel series mystic nine (2016) and side movies for the dramas that the author produced. there is also a single standalone movie--time raiders (2016) that is....well it’s. very strange. it’s fully subbed on youtube if you’re interested?

the best way to watch the dramas is to assume each one is its own self-contained AU set along different points of the dmbj timeline because even the dramas the author himself worked on don’t have continuity LOL (and with the exception of ultimate note & sha hai most of the time, also assume most characters are pretty OOC from the novels).

i uh regret to inform you though, that ultimate note will not be getting a sequel unless the author magically decides to not care about making money anymore and sells the rights to film the finale to linghe or something ^^;;;; it’s....unfortunate bc un is the most highly-rated dmbj adaptation on douban by A Lot, but it’s an adaptation that the author had literally nothing to do with whatsoever.

Because somethings I like to torment myself by showing how many fucking things I’m working on. Doesn’t help that lately, I’ve started a new WiP every time I get stuck in another fic. So, in no particular order (literally just how the tabs are ordered in my window lmao), here are all my Iorveth/Roche WiPs

2 fics in the Petals and Stripes ‘verse - one with Roche’s POV straight after and one of the Stripes’ POV as they deal with the aftermath... and try to help their boss woo Iorveth. Surprising no one, they’re terrible at it.

Curse breaking WiP where True Love’s Kiss strong emotion for one’s enemy saves Iorveth’s life. And then he, Roche, and Triss team up to go save the Scoia’tael.

Roche’s POV WiP set before they first meet. Includes some nice knife and blood kink during a face off between Iorveth and Roche. No idea where this one is going.

Eye On You Chapter 3, for which the plan is thigh-fucking. That’s it, that’s all I got.

Fake dating casefic (The Curious Case of the Murivel Resort for Couples). rn they’re playing strip gwent and I somehow signed up to write 5 different gwent games for this 😢

Competitive makeouts (The Chase) rn they’re spiderman kissing, but there’s gonna be a conspiracy plot that Iorveth has to reveal.

New ‘verse involving Iorveth/Roche/Kayran and Roche/Foltest lmao. First WiP is Roche running into Iorveth during his monthly fuckdate with the Kayran... and then joining in. Second WiP is a comparison of Roche’s two relationships and how they make him feel. For some reason, I framed it around the Chivalric Virtues from Blood & Wine and made it a 5+1 lol

Pining and Poignards, a WiP in which there is pining and stabbing lol. A poignard is a type of knife, which Iorveth generously “gifts” to Roche. rn Iorveth is sneaking around the army base and has just caught Roche masturbating. I...only sort of know where I’m going with this one.

Tittyfucking. That’s it, that’s the plot lmao. Iorveth is a lil obsessed with Roche’s chest and attempts to fuck it.

Gross Gremlin Man aka Iorveth prefers Roche nasty and sweaty. Uh... I just started this one and somehow it went from “huh, why do I not mind Roche when he’s all sweaty” to “hmm, I think I’m gonna steal his clothes and smell them while I touch myself” and I’m still working on the transition from one to the other lol

Red is the Rose Chapters 3+4 - Ch3 is about ready for posting, but I’m trying to figure out how much of the events of W2 to cover or if I should just skip all of them and get to the post-W2 plot.

Fun fact: all of those WiPs above are in 1 document because I like to make life difficult for Google Docs. But the other docs are all specific ‘verses (or themes) and these ones are theoretically standalone. Theoretically.

Neither knows who the other is, but they have amazing sex and every time they’re in Flotsam together, they meet up again. But Iorveth, of course, leads the Scoia’tael, and Roche has been tasked with hunting them down.

Crones WiP - Roche went to the Crones to plead for his men back. He gets them back - but as ghosts. He also gets assigned to help work on a cure to the Catriona plague, and it turns out one of the people already working on it is Iorveth. I literally just want Blue Stripes ghosts laughing at Roche’s bad flirting, but somehow it’s mostly angst rn ooops

First Time WiP - this one is so close to being done dammit. It’s actually the first WiP I ever started for this pairing and it just needs like 2 more orgasms aaaaahhhhhh

As in, the legend about “if you’re in love, you can still hear the lovers’ sighs in the garden” came to being because Roche is fucking loud lmao. Also, roses of remembrance. 😉

Sort of series fics, but technically stand alone. AKA apparently I decided I wanted to do Themes. 

Theme 1: Possessiveness aka all the kinky sex kinda embarrassed to admit to these which is dumb because fuck shame

Piss fic - uh, kinda what it sounds like? Roche decides to be an asshole and refuses to move out of the way when Iorveth tries to get to the bathroom - and somehow this turns into Iorveth pissing on his crotch.

Come inflation + piss fic - Roche gets a potion that makes him come a lot. Iorveth likes it and wants more.

Possessiveness - Iorveth has feelings about his nemesis and Roche does not know how to feel about this.

Tentacles + Breeding - a tentacle/vine plant instinctively tries to lay its eggs in Roche. Iorveth is not okay with this plant going for his enemy... until it turns out Roche is very much here for it. And also for Iorveth fertilizing the eggs after they’ve been laid.

Dream - Roche dreams about Iorveth being an elven king and himself being essentially Iorveth’s plaything, to use and to show off

Theme 2: King Roche aka hey, wouldn’t it be funny if he ended up in charge? He would hate it so much

Murder husbands - Iorveth breaks into the palace and finds the very unhappy “King” Roche, then they go run away and kill war criminals together. But of course Roche could never abandon Temeria, so he’s still in charge by day. But by night, it’s murder time.

Okay, technically this has like a line written for it, BUT bodyguard AU where Roche knows he’s gonna get assassinated without protection once he becomes king, and only Iorveth is allowed to kill him. So only makes since for Iorveth to become his bodyguard. 

Arranged Marriage AU - inspired by softestpunk’s The Gift, I literally just want cracky fun where they are forced to get married and they hate it but also fall in love. That’s it, that’s the story.

I love TOS/TNG/VOY/DS9 all (and haven’t seen any of the other two, and don’t regret that rn), and before this would probably have put Voyager at the top of my list, but tbh our joint rewatch of that didn’t hold up super well? the characters and premise are superb, still probably my favorite in concept; but the episodic nature hamstrings the plot, it doesn’t fulfill potential 

(TOS and TNG do episodic way better, and I also love those casts)

but DS9 is sincerely a step above, insofar as its openness on overarching plot AND reliance on the occasional Star Trek traditional episodic/throwaway/standalone lets it fulfill a potential unreached by the other series while maintaining a profound, sometimes easy, watchability, notwithstanding the whole later season plot-war-stress thing

but the DS9 cast and tropes and speculative concepts--especially the speculative concepts--are so far and away my bag that I can’t summarize it even in an unedited ramble that I expect no one to read. religion with a real, provable, but not inarguable basis that confronts characters with a faith that they don’t want and raises uncomfortable questions about the faith they already have! symbiosis, a people who define themselves by--but do not all have access to--symbiotic relationships; how identity and loneliness operate in a symbiotic and multi-generational relationships! every ST show as that not-human character who constantly raises the question of what it means to be human, and I love them all, but Odo is the best, Rene Auberjonois’s acting is above superb. I don’t care a ton about Ferengi but I care a lot about actors who champion their roles, who make them more meaningful, consistent, robust than they were ever written/intended. Klingons!! I wish I were married to Keiko but she is 200% too good for me!

Like, I have a lot of Star Trek feels, I grew up on Star Trek, but nothing so consistently inspires that profound longing as does DS9, that sense of want to be there, of want to inhabit that

anyway so when things went from “only bad because life is occurring to me, someone incapable of participating in the real world” to “legitimate nightmare hellscape of suffering” b/c of my dad’s diagnosis, I was like, is this a good idea? 1) if I use it as comfort watching now, will I forever conflate it with The Cancer Time? 1b) will The Cancer Time also make it impossible to successfully lose myself in it, thus ruining it twofold? 2) are feelings like this healthy--I mean, “how much escapism is healthy” is a question I’m historically shit at answering, but I don’t care about the answer rn; I have bigger issues to worry about--but is it catharsis or a trigger when you turn to something, aka Star Trek, which consistently turns out to be emotionally devastating? am I finding a productive outlet or just making myself more miserable? is there even any way to answer that question in this situation?

Janeway is my favorite captain because of Formative Sexual Awakening Reasons, and just because I love her, but Sisko is so important in ways I’m not best equipped to articulate: this dynamic, decisive, capable, formidable, profoundly loving Black man in a position of power. I have a complex relationship with depictions of bio/nuclear families for complex reasons re: my own family (like, you know, fucking everyone), I’m normally not really Affected by hearttugging family shit because there’s a wall there, if you will (I built it myself)--so I have always loved Sisko for his presence (so much presence! what a voice!) and for the acceptance and faith he shows in his crew; his relationship with Jake I can see as important but it didn’t have personal resonance.

it turns out that when your father is dying, all of the sudden stories about fathers are very easy to resonate with

the “complex reasons re: my own family” are about 95% the fact that I am a difficult family member to have because I am crazy as hell; small sins affect me hugely and I invite them by virtue of being me, so, like, family hurts, I am bad at having one, etc, etc

my father also profoundly, only, wants the best for me; hasn’t always known how to conceptualize “best” or “me,” but that changes nothing

15. Where does your inspiration come from?

Honestly? It’s generally things I’ve read or watched, especially for snippets of characters. You can see that a lot in characters from the RP. If it’s not stuff I’ve watched or read? I’m… unsure. The ether, maybe? (I’m still trying to figure out how I cranked out a character like Nikolai, tbh)

16. Where do you take your motivation from?

For original projects, I don’t really know. It just kinda comes and goes of its own accord. For RPing, though, it’s definitely getting to write with you guys, and read your replies, and interact with your amazing characters!

18. What’s your revision or rewriting process like?

I’ve got a teeny tiny confession to make. IIIII’ve never actually finished an original project, so I haven’t done like, a proper revision and rewriting process. I do occasionally find myself opening up the various documents to read through it all and just editing bits and pieces along the way but it’s not planned or anything.

As for stuff for the RP, I don’t usually do more than a skim over any reply or drabble I write, just cuz. I’m too excited to get it up to read it slowly enough to spot any errors. (I always catch them later, though XD Occasionally I’ll scroll through a blog and read through replies and stuff, catch typos and missing words, that kind of thing.)

26. Standalone or series, and why?

I’m honestly so bad. I love series, I love the idea of writing this saga, and having this journey unfold with characters you grow to learn and appreciate. But I never even finish the first novel. It’s kinda depressing.

31. Hardest character to write.

For the RP, probably like, Arachnid, or Yun. (Neither of whom I think you’ve actually seen on the dash before? Huh.) Yun’s definitely not a chatter box, and she makes it very difficult to get words out of her. And Arachnid just takes a certain mindset sometimes that I find hard to get in and out of.

For original projects, ironically enough it’s probably Alex (the MC of one of my WIPs). The more I develop his story, the more it feels wrong to call it his story, and the harder it gets to write for him. (I might just decide to switch it up to tell the story from maybe Danny’s perspective? I don’t know yet.)

32. Easiest character to write.

For the RP, for the most part I’d say Omens and Midnight (and Detonator, even though he’s not actually more than an npc rn). The muse for them is still fresh, and their stories are different from anything I’ve written in the RP so far.

For original projects… Probably Nikolai. He’s not a very wordy bloke, but he’s expressive in his own way, and I like trying to put it into words.

my thing is that generally i don’t start writing until 6pm for warm-up/roleplay stuff and until 1am for book stuff. sometimes i dabble a lil bit beforehand but it’s like a loose schedule i have to really dedicate my attention on something

i also always have tumblr open haha my process is literally: [refreshes dash][types a paragraph][refreshes dash][writes two sentences of dialogue][refreshes dash][getsREALLYINTOITANDFINISHESSCENE][refreshes dash and scrolls through as a reward]

i also just have a lot of rly specific orders of doing things when it comes to writing for my rp group like i tend to cycle through my characters in a certain order because that keeps me focused and organized and the more organized i am the more productive i can actually be with my work ehe

22. How many drafts do you need until you’re satisfied and a project is ultimately done for you?

when it comes to books UMMM two... i spend a lot of time on the first draft so i can’t imagine even needing or wanting a second, really. the second draft is more to edit evreything and refine things but, again, since i (unfortunately) do that a lot during the first draft, it’s not much! but that’s what makes it so fun hehe

my scripts tho, ah.. i have one finished and the other nearly finished so, judging on the process it took to do those, generally at least three. and that’s because the first draft is literally me just vomiting out dialogue without any sort of prose, no narration, little to no stage directions, nothing. the second draft is when i make it all fancy, and any other drafts after are just part of that process in making it fancy

(like the completely finished script had 4 drafts and the third and fourth draft only differ because one is written in a more, uh... tumblr? way? and the other is in a more ‘proper’ script format)

23. Single or multi POV, and why?

depends on the story! out of my three main books rn i have two that are single and one that is multi and that’s all based on the cast of characters. the multi one has about 5 characters that i rly wanna focus on (maybe more!) while the single ones have two protags and one’s point of view is dedicated to describing the second. they’re both equally fun for me... (multi is RLY exciting tho)

24. Poetry or prose, and why?

i mean, i get told a lot that my prose is VERY poetic and that’s nice so there’s that. um i can’t get into poetry, i feel like there’s this structure behind poetry that is ENTIRELY imagined, like, i dont think it applies to anybody else but me, but i can’t make myself fit into whatever box i assume you need to make to make a poem a POEM so it’s not a comfy fit for me. the closest thing to poetry i write is just lil snippets for my suggestion blogs and even then that’s literally me taking one line or a few lines of my prose and handing it out

25. Linear or non-linear, and why?

I LOVE NON-LINEAR... it is very VERY hard for me to make a story that doesn’t, at some point, devolve into some sort of non-linear fashion because... it’s more fun... i rly like that quote about emotional logic i saw before. to me, there’s a very specific journey i want the character and the reader to go on and sometimes you can’t get there by going from beginning to end

i think it also just reflects the psych far more than a linear story does. human beings are CONSTANTLY ruminating over the past, learning from their mistakes, recovering from what’s happened to them... a lot of my stories are very heavily based on what trauma has happened to so-and-so character and how they cope with it so to me it’s necessary to literally go back and show what happened, because, to the character, it’s still happening and they’re still processing it and you don’t get that effect if i just start from the bad thing and go on. i think it’s far more immersive if the character exists as they are, acts as they would, and suddenly you’re brought back to know why, and by the time you’re in the present again, you understand about the character, and the character (the way i do it) has finally passed a hurdle that will put them ahead, and bring the reader with them into the future...!!!! aaaaaaaaaaaaa i love writing

26. Standalone or series, and why?

STANDALONE... i love that fuzzy-headed feeling when you finish one (1) good book and you put it down and it’s final. DONE. not to say that a series doesn’t have that same effect (um my poor ruined ass after reading the series i’ve read this past year) but i just love the idea of having something so compact and so precise and so confined in its one lil area of existing.

it’s also just... that a series requires a LOT of content!!!! i don’t like writing fluff haha i struggle with it a lot, i am VERY to the point so sometimes i just don’t even have enough material to make it to a series.

actually, a lot of it is because my characters are VERY focused on what’s happening to them, like. i tend to write emotional-driven stories, so maybe??? four MAJOR things happen, that’s four chapters, but then each chapter has like ten of the emotional fall out, the relationships and the way they break or form, the reactions to everything that’s happening. my one series has plot point after plot point happening but i still GOTTA write that reaction so... that’d either make for a VERY long book or i had to make it a series lol

also i just. this is more for me with movies but i don’t like sequels lol i have one story to tell and once that story is told it’s done. sometimes i entertain the thought of having a sequel to tsg but. i cant imagine ever writing it. my characters start at point A, they end at point B, there will never ever be a point C that will be as important for them to start another journey because that was IT. IT’S DONE.

i want oh aew to find someone new so so much but i just know it's not gonna happen. oh aew is not a protagonist (no more 'two male protagonists' i guess lmao), he is only there to prop teh's development and thus his role is just 'teh's boyfriend'

it's funny bc i /knew/ since i saw the opening credits that oh aew was not gonna be prominent this season apart from being teh's boyfriend: we see bkpp first in the credits, then jai alone, just like bkpp (important role then), then khim and top together (not as important bc they aren't alone in frame but still, they are after jai) and then we see oh aew's friends ALL TOGETHER in one frame, the last ones, that's when i knew. it sucks bc ltip was oh aew's pov and i thought that meant ipytm was gonna continue with that but guess not.

I am guessing it's bc they wanted to explore the acting world through teh so oh aew had to be transferred to another major so they could focus only on teh and his development as a character. it sucks bc while it is in character some of the things he is doing, it just feels repetitive? teh is confused about his feelings (again) and now it's oh aew = tarn; jai = oh aew, the storyline thread seems the same, it's a cycle and yeah, in real life it's like that sometimes but this is a tv show, you HAVE to show growth in the character, from one season to another, rn its just feels like teh didn't learn anything in itsay, he just became older (and more of an ass).

also the "changes" in oh aew, what are they? like i only see superficial changes: his major, his car, his hair, but personality wise? he is the exact same as in itsay, he didn't change? so teh's feelings about it are just not understandable to me, and seem SO superficial? it's like he only fell in love with oh aew bc he had the same dream as him, which isn't true (at least from what i understood in itsay) so like, what is it? i just don't get it and again, everything seems so superficial in general and it lacks the depth and complexity of itsay for me (i guess the time skips are partly to blame for that)

idk it's just disappointing i guess, i loved itsay so much, i loved these characters so much and now i just don't feel anything anymore? i am apathetic towards all of it and i hate it bc i spent so much time waiting for part2 that i just feel like i wasted my time.

honestly, same :( i don't necessarily need oh-aew to find someone else, but i do want him to be able to be his own person without teh. not just an add-on to teh's story. i know we'll be getting more of him in ep 4, but it looks like he's going to get even more hurt from the preview :/// i'm guessing there'll be a confrontation by the end of it so i really hope he doesn't just take what happened lying down. i want him to see his worth and realise that he deserves better than what he's been putting up with. i honestly really want to see him tear into teh about it bc that's the least he deserves.

i didn't even think that about the opening credits but you're so right :((( it's weird how inconsistent everything is in terms of the povs...i totally thought the same about ltip bc there was so much focus on oh-aew, but then they really only continued on with oh-aew's feelings in ep 1 and everything basically got resolved for him by the end of it.

yesss, that's why it feels so much like teh's taken all these steps back in ipytm. like yes, it's obv this is his personality and so technically everything he feels/does is consistent with his character...but it's also like the development we got by the end of itsay's been revoked. so he's regressed only to grow again, rather than just grown more from where he initially was. if that makes sense? and bc we've already seen him act like this before, it's harder to sympathise with him now bc you'd think he'd have learnt something more the first time he went through this (and ESP now that he's older). so even though this is technically something different, it's similar enough that it feels like a rehash of his previous experiences.

i really think this is def a case of where they told too much instead of SHOWING us oh-aew's changes/why their relationship had deteriorated so much in teh's eyes. like we hear him say the words (and see all the superficial ways oh-aew's changed), but that's not enough for us to actually understand WHY things have changed so drastically for teh in regards to their relationship since the last ep. and also just why he doesn't try harder (or at all tbh) to make things work between them. he did so much for oh-aew in itsay, you could tell how much he loved and cared for him...which is why it's so strange to watch this ep and see how cold he's grown towards him since.

yeah...itsay gave me this fluttery excitement every week. i couldn't WAIT for new eps...but ipytm kind of just leaves me dreading new eps bc it's nowhere near as enjoyable to watch. like i'm still interested in knowing what happens in the last two eps, but it doesn't feel the same anymore. the cast and crew really were right when they said it's like watching two entirely different shows...

whatever happens in ipytm, i already told myself before it aired that i was going to separate the two shows in my mind (also partly bc i love itsay so much that i didn't think anything would ever live up to my love for it anyway). i'm SO glad that itsay at least gave us a proper ending so it can still act as a standalone series by itself as it's genuinely one of the shows that comforts me the most (and i'm not gonna let my sad ipytm feelings ruin that for me no matter what).
