TV Series

01 Russian Doll - I think I would have enjoyed this more if it hadn’t been bingeable - would have made a nice week-by-week discussion sort of show. I loved to watch the changes between re-ups of our major characters, and I think the actual plotting would reward re-watches. 

02 Catastrophe S4 - A satisfying ending to an excellent show, with very charismatic leads (and deeply weird supporting characters). Had to write around Carrie Fisher’s death, and I’m sure did a better job of it than Star Wars did. 

03 Friends from College S2 - More of the same, which is what I was after. A show like cotton candy (but with more infidelity). 

04 High Maintenance S3 - A lot more of this season took place outside of New York City, which was a great change of pace. And a great deal more information about The Guy and his own life; both difficulties and successes included. 

05 Losers - This was a great little docuseries on Netflix that I didn’t hear a lot of people talking about - it’s about sports losses, but unusual sports ie curling, figure skating and the like. You’d think it would get repetitive, being as it’s always about recovering after loss, but it doesn’t! I wish they would make another season….

06 Shrill - a tight six episode dramedy about an alt-weekly journalist in the Pacific Northwest, based on Lindy West’s memoir of the same name. John Cameron Mitchell as her boss (based on Dan Savage) stands out of the ensemble cast, as does Annie’s roommate played by a British standup Lolly Adefope.

07 Broad City S5 - I haven’t always kept up with Broad City, but I came back to it for its final season, and thought it did a good job of setting its characters up for big changes in their lives. 

08 I Think You Should Leave - It’s easy to assume that all sketch comedy is terrible and always will be, but then you see this, and throw your TV out the window (due to all the laffs)

09 Fleabag S2 - Everything you’ve heard is true, this season is goddamn hilarious and ridiculously sexy. A huge step up from the first season, which was already pretty fantastic and incisive. 

10 Fosse/Verdon - Musicals are not particularly my bag, so I’m sure there was a lot that I missed in terms of references, but the lead performances ably carried me through all of the time jumps and various performances. 

11 Stranger Things S3 - Say it after me: d-i-m-i-n-i-s-h-i-n-g r-e-t-u-r-n-s! Maya Hawke kills it, though. 

12 Big Little Lies S2 - Unnecessary, and (if possible) even sillier than the first season.

13 Lorena - Part of the ongoing quest to rehabilitate the maligned women of the 1990s, this gave me tons of context that I had no idea about at the time, due to being a dumb kid. 

14 Glow S3 - I felt like I was losing steam on this series this year, but episodes like the camping ep kept me coming back. A great ensemble, though some unusual character choices (like a certain kiss *cough*) took me out of it by times. 

15 Lodge 49 S1-3 - I’d kept hearing about this show, so I finally sought it out. I can’t say it was amazingly compelling (I almost dropped it after the first season) but it’s definitely an oddball of a show, slipping from setpiece to setpiece with little regard for logic. For me, a background show. 

16 Chernobyl - This show really gave me the Bad Feeling, humans were definitely A Mistake.

17 On Becoming a God in Central Florida - Kiki in a trashy mode, not as infinitely appealing as the version she pulled off in the second season of Fargo, but scrappy and industrious nonetheless.

18 Show Me a Hero - I’d put off watching this for years, it felt like it was going to be too dull (housing policy in Yonkers?) but it’s great, and larded up with Bruce Springsteen songs, obvs.

19 Great British Bake Off S9-S10 - I’d also held off on watching this for a long time, out of loyalty to Mel, Sue, and Mary Berry. But I needed some comfort viewing towards the end of the summer, and the new hosts and judge do an able job, although the show’s tropes are feeling a bit well-worn at this point. 

20 Righteous Gemstones S1 - A rollicking ride for sure, with a great cast. Your mileage/patience with Danny McBride may vary, so keep that in mind, naturally. 

21 This Way Up S1 - A small show starring the fabulous Aisling Bea, about mental health and families and some nice comic physical acting. Oh, and in case you were watching The Crown and crushing on Tobias Menzies’ version of Prince Phillip, he plays a hot dad love interest in this, which gives you all the Tobias you’re looking for, without the PP racisms. 

22 The Crown S3 - This is the first season of the big cast switchover, and I thought it stuck reasonably well, once we were in it an episode or two. This season concentrated even less on Elizabeth herself, preferring her sister, husband, and (newly!) her children.

100 Character Questions  for Dust

So there was a thing I saw a while back that was supposed to be one of those things where someone sends a number, and you answer a question for it, and instead of doing that, I just went ahead and filled all of them out for my reaper character, Dust, an extremely apathetic hitman for the forces of The Divines and the Abyss who goes after necromancers and undead creatures. 

I spent too much time on this. It’s going under the break. 

1. What do they smell like?

He smells faintly of lemons and gunsmoke.

2. What is their voice like?

He doesn’t have a voice, and speaks through sign language, writing, or occasionally telepathy if in the presence of a mindreader/psychic.

3. What is their biggest motivator?

He exists almost completely for his job, that of collecting escaped or kidnapped souls and executing necromancers on behalf of the forces of The Divines and The Abyss. He comes to realize that he truly believes the dead should rest in peace, or they should endure whatever torment they’ve earned in the afterlife, and those who disturb them need to be put down.

4. What is their most embarrassing memory?

He has no memory of his life before he became The Reaper, and due to his uncomfortable amounts of apathy toward anything that isn’t his job. He’s basically a supernatural Terminator.

5. How do they deal with/react to pain?

One of the perks of being The Reaper is having an extraordinarily high pain tolerance, to the point where broken limbs are just inconvenient because they keep him from moving properly. However if he takes too much damage, he temporarily fades into a different dimension where he starts to rebuild himself, before reappearing at something he calls a “Sanctuary”, a place that connects him to the mortal plane, and potentially other realms as well. It usually takes him about an hour or so to reform, depending on how messed up he is.

6. What do they like to wear?

Loose hoodies, jeans or sweatpants, sneakers. After he finally starts making friends, they start to encourage him to try finding a better style, and he starts wearing actual outfits that aren’t just lazily put together.

7. Which of their relationships have impacted them most positively?

An angel and demon, who are his connections to The Divines and The Abyss, eventually befriend him and convince him to start acting with more of an identity and personality outside of his job. They offer him advice, and he starts to help them with personal issues that they’re otherwise unable to perform themselves due to certain laws.

8. What’s the weirdest thing they’ve ever eaten?

The first time he tried baking, it didn’t go very well for him. It was especially weird because it was the first time he had tried eating since becoming The Reaper and returning to the mortal realm. He did discover that he actually has a preference for food: lemons.

9. Describe the way that they sleep.

He doesn’t. Instead of sleeping, he reads or practices certain tricks that he feels will help him do his job more efficiently. Later on he starts baking, and learns how to play the cello.

10. What is their favorite food/kind of food?

Anything with lemons, or anything lemon flavored.

11. What do they feel most insecure about?

Nothing that really comes to mind right now.

12. How do they like to dress?

Once he gains a sense of style, he likes to wears grey pants, a black turtleneck, and a black coat.

13. How do they react to feelings of guilt?

Confusion mostly. He doesn’t really know much about being close enough to someone to feel bad if he’s wronged them, and has a sort of blunt logic about all his actions. Though he does try to apologize and understand why what he did hurt them, or why he should feel bad.

14. How do they react to/deal with betrayal?

He’s unsurprised and sort of takes it as a minor inconvenience that he expected. Everyone wants a chance to cheat death afterall.

15. What is their greatest achievement?

Taking down a revenant that had been summoned specifically to slay him, every time he regenerates, thus allowing a prolific Necromancer to work uninterrrupted for an extended period of time. It took a lot of cunning and trickery to take it down, but he managed it.

16. What are they like when they’ve gotten too little sleep?

N/A

17. What are they like when they’re drunk?

N/A

18. What kind of music do they enjoy?

Noir-styled jazz music and piano solos.

19. Are they right or left handed?

Ambidextrous.

20. Fears?

Losing his only friends now that he actually has something he cares about, and failing to live up to the reputation of the previous Reaper.

21. Favorite kind of weather?

Windy nights.

22. Favorite color?

Black and yellow.

23. Do they collect anything?

Non-fiction books, antique weapons, occult texts.

24. Do they prefer either hot or cold weather more?

Cold. He likes having an excuse to wear long coats and scarves and give himself that ominous look of Death waiting with their cloak in the wind.

25. What is their eye color?

He doesn’t have eyes, but his eye-sockets glow with light-blue embers that act as a sort of pupil.

26. What is their race/ethnicity?

His actual body is composed of solidified shadows and smoke that resemble something humanoid, and his head is a skull missing its lower jaw. So, uh, I guess his race is ��Grim Reaper”?

27. Hair color?

None.

28. Are they happy where they are currently?

He has friends, a purpose, and a cat. He is content.

29. Are they a morning person?

Can you technically be a morning person if you never sleep?

30. Sunrise or sunset?

Sunset. That’s the time that most Necromancers begin their work, and that means he gets to go to work against them.

31. Are they more messy or more organized?

Organized to a fault.

32. Pet peeves?

Anyone who thinks they can tempt him with knowledge of his previous life, or who call themselves the masters of life and death, and people who make excessively long megalomaniacal speeches.

33. Do they own any objects of significant personal importance?

His pistol that he carries around nearly everywhere. It was his first weapon, and it has the word “Taxes” engraved in the barrel. It was the first clue to his friends that he actually had a personality lurking in that not-so-empty skull of his.

34. Least favorite food?

Blueberries.

35. Least favorite color?

Greenish-brown.

36. Least favorite smell?

Burned lemons or gasoline.

37. When was the last time they cried?

Not since he became The Reaper. He just feels a sort of hollowness now if he ever feels anything close to sad.

38. Were they with anybody the last time they cried?

Nope. Utterly alone.

39. Tell us about one of the times they got injured?

That aforementioned revenant broke his arms and legs and kept him damaged enough to not move, but not regenerate somewhere else. If it weren’t for his Demon contact dragging him out and forcing Dust to claim his mortal home as a sanctuary, he would have been completely boned.

40. Do they have any scars?

Nope.

41. Do they struggle with any mental health issues?

Depression.

42. Do they have any bad habits?

Workaholic, he hyper-focuses on tasks, and isolates himself too much.

43. Why might someone dislike them?

He’s almost too robotic, he’s creepy and silent, he’s literally Death, he’s not very social or good at anything involving social activity, and his humor is very dry since he’s not used to telling jokes or understanding them.

44. Why might someone love them?

He’s studious, loyal to what few friends he has, starts to genuinely care about his purpose and the principles of freedom and rest associated with it, and he’s trying to be better and improve himself outside of just his job. He also never really lies, as he has no reason to most of the time. He’s also nothing if not a professional when it comes to his occupation.

Ahem. He is The Reaper. Who hunts undead. And necromancers. And trapped spirits.

46. Is there anyone they would trust with their lives?

The Angel and Demon who still need names.

Not right now.

Nope.

Depends on how clean the mirror is. He does believe that souls should be left alone where they are, and the dead should rest in peace, or the damned should endure their punishment until further notice. Anyone who thinks they can rule over Death is sorely mistaken.

He doesn’t really laugh, but he can give the impression of a small smile sometimes.

61. When bored, how do they pass time?

More work, weapon maintenance, target practice, or reading books on new techniques he might incorporate into his own work.

It’s too open for him. Too easy to be spotted.

He signs, so not really.

No lemon, no interest.

Sigh very heavily and focus on a sanctuary to return to.

He’s okay at baking, but he’s practicing and getting better.

Doesn’t really insult others at all.

He doesn’t show it very well, but he does tend to move a little lighter and allows himself to do some more recreational stuff, like reading a book or practicing his music.

Remembers it for later.

Unless you’re a necromancer or escaped soul, then yes, you can trust him completely.

Nope! He’s just very apathetic and not really good at even expressing his emotions.

Another perk of being the Reaper is having very good physical prowess. Something just around an Olympic athlete's level of physique. He’s not the strongest or fastest, but he can at least go for silver and gold most of the time.

As comfortable as one can be when you have a body that’s literally shadows and a skull.

Nothing really.

85. What kind of personalities do they find attractive?

He just doesn’t really have a type, but he’s quicker to befriend others if they remind him of his Demon and Angel friends.

Only if it’s lemon flavored.

N/A.

Short, somewhere just a hair under 5’3’’

Neither.

Doesn’t really care.

Very dry and a little too subtle. He doesn’t make many jokes, but he appreciates gallows humor and some references that he might actually understand. He usually surprises everyone if he ever cracks any kind of joke.

Neutral, or he’s either curious or confused.

Disrespect toward the dead, anyone who threatens his friends.

94. Outlook on life?

To serve his purpose and find another one that he can choose for himself. He feels like the actual point of life is to live it and earn whatever you do in the afterlife. Wouldn’t have considered that question before he started befriending people.

Nothing really, until he’s made aware of just how lonely he actually is. He just kinda forgot what it meant to be anything other than isolated and alone.

He’s not good with any sort of socializing, and he’s bad at reading people and can be lied to easily. He focuses on his work too much, and ignores the fact that he was once human.

97. What is the greatest strength?

His ability to learn and adapt to any given situation, as well as his perfect memory. He can improvise in just about any situation.

98. Something that they regret?

Ignoring his friends’ invitations and attempts to befriend him for so long.

99. Biggest accomplishment?

Stopping a Lich from ascending to godhood and wiping out his army of undead near single-handedly, but that’s something I’m still tinkering with for the future.

He can be completely silent when he wants to be, and uses that to set up traps to make his job of assassinating undead creatures and necromancers much easier, and sometimes even flashier to spread his reputation and use that to prevent future Necromancers from trying anything.

You Can’t Blame KD for Going to Golden State in Today’s NBA Written by Jarrett Adams on DEC 28, 2016

           There were many moves this free agency season, but only one that would change the entire landscape of the NBA. That free agency move was Golden State declining to resign Harrison Barnes to a max deal, trading Andrew Bogut to the Mavericks, and letting go of a bunch of bench players to go after 7-time all star, 4-time NBA scoring champion, and one time NBA MVP Kevin Durant.

KD’s departure from the Thunder is big news; no matter what team he chose to join. Personally, I would have loved to see KD pair up with Anthony Davis in New Orleans, go home and play for the Washington Wizards, or even re-sign on a one-year deal with the Thunder. Instead, KD decided to go to Golden State, which caused a lot of uproar considering Golden State’s recent success and their place already on the NBA landscape. We’re talking about a team that finished with the best regular season record in NBA history, coming off their first ring in 2015, and the reigning Western Conference Champions. The same team I must add, that the Thunder, (KD’s team at the time) was up 3-1 against in the Western Conference Finals, only for the Dubs to come back and win three straight, sending them back to finals to face the Cavs (They would eventually lose in a gut wrenching game 7).

Even with losing in the Finals to the Cavs, and losing key contributors to what we all thought was a championship team – key role players like Barnes, Bogut, Mo Speights, Leandro Barbosa are all gone – Kevin Durant was still joining a team that featured the reigning back to back MVP, Steph Curry, splash brother no. 2 in Klay Thompson, and do-it-all all star Draymond Green. To really analyze why we shouldn’t be blaming KD, lets now focus on why people are mad, and then debunk the thinking behind it. Usually the first thing people are going to say is… 

But the Thunder we’re already up 3-1 in the WCF, why would KD want join the Team that beat him?

Okay, Lets start here. Basically what is in question is the competitiveness of 7-time all star, 4-time scoring champ, and one time MVP Kevin Durant. Because had KD been more competitive, he would not have joined the team he almost took out the previous year. This argument really holds a lot of weight in why Kevin Durant has turned into the biggest villain in today’s NBA.

There are a few things to consider; the first being a player of Kevin Durant’s caliber hitting the open market for the first time in his career. The only team/franchise the Durant has played for has been the Seattle Supersonics (RIP) and the OKC Thunder. With a guy as talented as Kevin Durant – we’re talking about a 6’11 scoring machine that can shoot lights out, play every aspect of the game, and a matchup nightmare night in and night out. KD hitting the open market is like the IPO of Facebook stock. Everyone in position to make the deal were quick to do so, making a pitch to swing the superstar and future Hall of Famer in their favor.

Here in lies why it’s so difficult for me to blame Durant for choosing the Warriors. This has nothing to do with questioning the competitive spirit of a generational talent in Durant. Instead, we should be giving credit to Golden State’s approach and overall pitch to Kevin Durant. Whereas the Thunder pitched Kevin Durant sharing career superstardom with Russell Westbrook (a generational talent in his own right) and building the team around the two of them, Warriors pitched Kevin Durant on adding to a dynasty, winning multiple championships, and joining the NBA’s most talked about team. From a free agents perspective, not only was this career move that would help grow KD’s name and relevancy worldwide, but would also a move that would give him a better shot at defeating Lebron.

Speaking of Lebron – With Lebron defeating the Splash Brothers & Dubs in Game 7, and finally delivering a championship to Cleveland, Lebron Proved there will always be redemption stories of great magnitude in the NBA 

          To better understand the point I’m trying to make here, lets breakdown the storyline and teammates of LeBron’s career in the past few years. Lebron left a 61-21 2009-10 Cleveland Cavaliers team that lost in the second round of the playoffs to the Boston Celtics. This Celtics team consisted of vet all-stars Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, and KG, had good bench scorers like Nate Robinson, Rasheed Wallace and Glen Big Baby Davis, a great wing defender in Tony Allen, and a prime Rajon Rondo running the show at point guard. Looking back on it now, I don’t blame Lebron for leaving. His 2009-10 Cavs roster consisted of 37-year-old Shaq, 34-year-old Zydrunas Ilgauskas, 33-year-old Antawn Jamison, and two adequate guards at the time in Mo Williams and Delonte West.

           However, hindsight is 20/20, and at the time, when Lebron chose to take his talents to South Beach and join a prime D-Wade, and prime Chris Bosh to win not 5, not 6, not 7 championships he was vilified to hell on a rocket. It took Cleveland fans all but 3 seconds to start burning his jersey while the city lost its mind. And the media took the opportunity to hype up the NBA as a brand and product and build publicity for the game itself. Anybody that had an opinion on Lebron’s decision had the platform to either accept it or diss Lebron for joining up a “SuperTeam” at the time. Looking at the NBA Champs that year, years prior, and years that have followed, its easy to argue that almost every NBA Champion either had either multiple all stars or hall of fame players. Only the 2003-04 Pistons do not fit this mold. I bring up the 2011-14 Miami Heat just to point out that even when Lebron left the Heat, he went back to a Cavs team that still had multiple all stars in Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love. That’s right – technically when Lebron had the opportunity in free agency, he chose to create a “Superteam” not once, but twice!

           After Lebron won his ring in 2016 and brought a championship to Cleveland, most of this has been forgotten. Which really means that no matter how different KD’s decision was from Lebron’s, lets not forget that Lebron still has set the precedent of Superteam creation through free agency in the NBA. KD is now just the new face of something Lebron has already done twice. Only difference is that KD has not won championships. Until he does so, then he will never get the respect and redemption he truly is chasing before his career is over. 

Brand Awareness, The Bay Area Expansion and Gold Rush for Technology

           Kevin Durant was already deservedly a mega star around the world and in the NBA. But with an injury two years ago that saw the rise of Golden State basketball, including two straight finals appearances, it was clear the Dubs had overtaken the popularity contest of the NBA Landscape. I like the compare the 2015 and 2016 Warriors to the 2011 and 2012 Oklahoma City Thunder, which of course featured KD, Russell Westbrook, and James Harden. To KD, I know for a fact he misses those good ole days. They were the NBA’s most watchable product in the Western Conference and this was a time where all three players began to see their brand and popularity really take off. The final two years of James Harden’s time with the Thunder resulted in a Western Conference Finals loss and a Finals berth the next year. When people say present day that “No one could have predicted James Harden would be this good in a star role” it really makes me cringe – any bench player that can lead the league in free throw attempts and still good enough to get you to a finals appearance as a third wheel at 22 is worth keeping at all costs, no excuses.

           I like to rather look at this grave mistake and injustice to the fans of Oklahoma City as either arrogance or incompetence. Someone has got to look into Sam Hinkie’s dealings as a GM. There’s no way a franchise that cares about winning championships would make this move. When KD left in free agency of 2016, this was the silver lining. Oklahoma City Thunder were using KD to sell tickets, sell jerseys, be competitive enough to be contenders but never recovered from the Harden trade. Had Harden been there the past four years, there’s no doubt the Thunder win at least one championship. And I think that is what played a big factor in KD’s decision to not just leave, but in choosing a team like the Warriors.

           Bottom line, the Warriors have all of sudden become a franchise focused solely on winning championships and expanding the franchise into a NBA dynasty. They became the perfect fit in today’s NBA to attract a Kevin Durant caliber player, for more reasons than one. It’s not just the roster KD gets to play with everyday, but the ability to compete for championships against LeBron’s Superteam in the East. The Warriors and KD know that winning, above all else is what will last in people’s minds once it’s all over.

           And with the expansion of social media making the game more universal than ever, the bigger the dynasty, and the bigger the stakes, the bigger legacy you will lead. You could argue that KD joining the Warriors only helps the brands of Steph, Klay, and Draymond individually off the court. They all become bigger stars because they play together. Northern California and the Bay Area also seem to be the perfect location for this as well; it features a top five market with all the advantages of being on the West Coast. San Francisco and surrounding suburbs are already one of most expensive places to live in the U.S. per capita. The Warriors already have great fans, and that’s before their ticket prices skyrocketed. Lets not forget the tech boom in Palo Alto, where the biggest tech companies in the world like Apple, Google, and Facebook all have large offices and workforces. The entire Bay Area just seems like the right fit right now for Kevin Durant and ultimately the NBA. I’m just letting everyone now before they make history that I am a willing participant in witnessing it.

I still prefer face to face conversations but I’m grateful we’re given these endless possibilities nowadays.

31. What type of day are you having?My day has been an odd mix so far; a little bit busy, a little bit boring, amazingly challenging.

I’ve done a shooting with Brooklyn All Day a while back where they put a fake septum on me and I actually thought this look was pretty cool and refreshing, enough to briefly wonder if it would be something I could enjoy on the long run, but I came to the conclusion that it’s not too convenient in this kind of profession. When I was younger, I always admired people with belly button piercings, too.

33. Do you prefer warm or cold weather?I like both extremes. I like them, but I also find myself moaning as soon as I’m forced to cope with extreme cold or extreme warmth. Yet I enjoy being surrounded by snow or going to the beach on beautiful summer days. I don’t have a preference as it seems but I’m grateful for every season and its perks.

One Point More: Thoughts from Flyers 4, Hurricanes 3

I had to check my surroundings last night to make sure I wasn’t in a time machine.

After all, there was Claude Giroux telling us that the Flyers are laser-focused going to bring their best game to the 82nd and final game of the season against the New York Rangers Saturday afternoon with a playoff berth on the line.

I couldn’t help but have a feeling of deja vu.

It took me back eight years, to when the Flyers were in the same scenario. Beat the Rangers and make the playoffs.

OK, so there are some minor differences.

Technically, the Flyers don’t have to win, they just need to get to overtime and then can lose, and still get in.

Oh, and there’s also the scenario where they lose in regulation, and then back into the playoffs if the Florida Panthers lose to either Buffalo at home Saturday night or in Boston Sunday night.

And this time around, even though the Rangers have already announced that Henrik Lundqvist will be in goal for that final game against the Flyers, they really have nothing to play for other than to be a spoiler.

The Rangers were in the same boat as the Flyers in that 2010 game. They needed a win to get in as well. This Rangers team is starting a rebuild, and they are sitting in the Metropolitan Division basement.

So, it’s not exactly the same…. but….

The Flyers have positioned themselves in a do-or-maybe-die situation in the final game of the season.

An optimist will tell you, that after losing 10 straight games in November and seven of eight in early March, that to be in a situation where you can control your own playoff participation destiny in the final game of the season shows great resolve and determination by the team.

That’s fair.

But a pessimist will tell you that a team that was in first place in the Metro when they awoke on February 27th after a victory over Montreal could, in the span of just 19 games, fall completely out of the playoffs altogether shows you just how fragile and incomplete the team is and should generate questions about the coaching, the roster construction and, in that equation, the general manager.

And that would also be fair.

It’s not like they’ve been flat out awful since then – they are 7-7-4 since with one game to go – but it also coincided with the NHL trade deadline where other teams who were behind the Flyers at the time made moves to bolster their rosters and the Flyers, with the exception of trading for Petr Mrazek out of necessity the week before – stood pat.

So it’s not a surprise that despite playing .500 hockey (from a points percentage perspective, which I hate, but I digress…) that they’ve been surpassed by teams who addressed their weaknesses.

That’s not to say Ron Hextall should have started selling his well-stocked farm to improve this year’s Flyers, but, if you wanted to make a commitment to this season as a successful one and not just another year in the rebuild – as many in the organization declared several times this season – then something more should have probably happened at that deadline.

Grab another reliable defenseman. Or, if scoring depth is your biggest worry, maybe add a forward who could have helped so you aren’t swapping Michael Raffl and Travis Konecny in the penultimate game of the season to try and spread out the scoring in your lineup.

But that didn’t happen, and here we are… Facing a 60-minute test in which the Flyers have to at least match, if not be better, than the last place team in the division.

Sounds easy enough, right?

Well, it’s not.

The two teams met at the Wells Fargo Center a couple weeks back and it was a tough game. The Flyers won 4-3, but the Rangers nearly skated the Flyers out of the building. They are a young team bereft of any star skaters, and they just keep coming at you.

They make mistakes, sure, and probably too many of them, which is why they are in the cellar, but they hung with the Flyers with a rookie in goal in that game as well.

This time will be different. This time it will be King Henrik – and you can bet he’ll be out for revenge.

Lundqvist usually stymies the Flyers. His lifetime record against Philadelphia is 35-15-4. However, the last time he faced them was his worst outing ever against the Flyers and he let up seven goals at Madison Square Garden.

Oh, and don’t think he doesn’t recognize the gravity of the game and doesn’t remember what it felt like to lose that 82nd game in 2010 and miss the playoffs.

I assure you Lundqvist – and his Rangers teammates – will be up for this game. They won’t just go through the motions.

So, Giroux better be prescient when he says the Flyers will play their best game Saturday – because they’re going to need to do so.

Now, I wouldn’t have spent the past 800 words or so preparing you for this game Saturday if things didn’t go as they did last night.

So let’s look at what happened:

1. The Flyers won despite their goalie

This was the biggest story of the night because it’ll be the biggest focus of Saturday, and if the Flyers make the playoffs it will be the biggest story of the playoffs for them as well.

As per usual, goaltending is a huge question mark.

Someone in the press box said to me last night, “I feel like it’s 2011 all over again.”

A lot of retro feelings last night….

Anyway… Brian Elliott returned to the lineup for the first time since injuring himself on Feb. 10 and enduring core muscle surgery (nee, sports hernia; nee groin pull).

Coming into the game, I felt like Elliott would be a stabilizing presence in goal. He’s not a great goalie, but he’s steady, does his job, and doesn’t make a lot of mistakes. Plus, the players in front of him are most confident when he’s in net.

It didn’t take long though to see that Elliott was quite rusty.

He fought the puck all night. And although he made a few key saves at key moments, he also let in a couple goals that he usually doesn’t. This one was by far the worst:

That’s bad.

Elliott explained what happened afterwards and took responsibility for it, but sheesh:

“I leaned a little too far into the post and that levered my pad off the ice,” he said, “Not something you want to happen, especially when G scores that big goal, but we responded well. Jake came down and ripped it. I knew the next shot coming I wasn’t letting in.”

He didn’t, but this wasn’t exactly a confident save that occurred afterwards:

If any of the Flyers goalies can be consistent and reliable for the playoffs, it’s Elliott – and I think the coaches know that and I expect to see him between the pipes Saturday.

But he has to be better than last night. We’ll give him a small pass because it was his first game in almost two months, but if the first period against the Rangers is shaky, Hakstol may have to be Gabe Kapler-esque in calling for relief.

2. Captain clutch

One of the things that has made Claude Giroux so special this season has been his propensity to come through time and again when it matters most.

It seems that almost every Flyers game hangs in the balance in the third period or overtime – win or lose – and it always seems Giroux is in the middle of making a positive play to help the team win or get close to winning.

Just this week, he scored the OT game-winner against Boston, he tied the game against the Islanders Tuesday, completing a three-goal, third period comeback, only to see it flit away 28 seconds later, and he briefly gave the Flyers a third period lead last night with this:

Of course, it was wiped out by the goal Elliott let in above, but it’s time and again that he is doing this for the Flyers.

He now has 99 points….

Yes, you read that correctly – 99 points – he originally wasn’t credited with an assist on Michael Raffl’s goal last night:

The Flyers petitioned the league last night and the league denied the request for the scoring change. Then, we led the charge. I was right on the front lines with many others also calling the NHL out for their ridiculous assessment that Carolina “possessed the puck” on the Giroux pass to the slot:

I’m told the @NHLFlyers petitioned the NHL to get Giroux an assist on Raffl’s goal and were denied.

League said the Carolina defender played the puck.

He did no such thing.

It would suck royally if that asinine decision by a league video flunky costs G an 100-point season.

Like I said, I wasn’t alone. Dozens of others also questioned it. The league, feeling that social media pressure, changed its mind Friday morning. Good work Flyers Twitter.

So with 99 points, Giroux is alone, second in the NHL in scoring this year behind only Connor McDavid in Edmonton.

If the Flyers do get to the playoffs, the Hart Trophy race really shouldn’t be that tough. Yes, Taylor Hall has had a similar impact in New Jersey, but he’s not the all-around player Giroux is.

Giroux is having the best season by a Flyers player in at least a generation. And I don’t say that lightly. This is the best since Eric Lindros before all the concussions and drama.

This should be a no-brainer for the Professional Hockey Writers Association. Don’t screw it up guys.

3. Don’t forget Jake

Jake Voracek has been playing second fiddle to Giroux for much of the season, but he too is having a career year.

He was the guy who showed the leadership qualities in settling down the bench before the overtime win over Boston on Sunday – and then went out and made the perfect pass to Giroux for his game-winner.

And when the Flyers were really facing the difficult time of a tie game late in the third period and the season was really on the line, Voracek was there yet again:

It was Jake’s 20th goal of the season – the fifth time in his career he’s reached that plateau. He now has 84 points this season – a career high.

He’s playing at another level right now, too – you can sense it with both Giroux and Voracek just by talking to them – they are willing the Flyers to win games by themselves. It’s been really impressive to watch.

4. Provy and Ghost

So, Shayne Gostisbehere won the Barry Ashbee Trophy for the best defenseman on the Flyers last night. It’s the second time he won the award (other winners below).

But it was the only Flyers award that was in doubt. Because it could have gone to Ivan Provorov and I would argue that it should have.

That’s not a knock on Ghost. He’s had a great season. He became just the third Flyers defenseman to ever record 50 assists in a season last night. He now has 64 points on the season. It’s been one of the best offensive seasons from a defenseman in Flyers history.

But Provorov is no slouch in that department either – He now has 40 points this season after scoring this goal last night:

He’s been really active in the offensive zone lately – he sees that lane and goes to the net. It’s something you don’t expect from a defenseman if you are the opposition, but it’s a smart play (made even smarter when you see Giroux’s awareness as he rotates to cover Provorov’s position on the point – a subtle but excellent play by the captain that often goes unnoticed in these reviews).

Provorov has been a horse for the Flyers – not only has he had a quality season with 40 points and 16 goals – but he’s the team’s best defensive defenseman.

I think if we’re judging all-around game, Provy edges Ghost and should have won the award. The Flyers media who voted (doesn’t include me) thought otherwise.

But, they’ve both had a great year.

5. The Awards

Most of these were pretty cut and dry:

As I mentioned above, I would have voted Provy over Ghost, but it’s not an egregious pick. I was surprised by the Fan Club vote – I could have sworn they would have voted Travis Konecny for most heart. Not that it really matters…

NCAA Latest: Auburn holds off Charleston's upset bid

The Latest on the NCAA Tournament (all times Eastern):

9:50 p.m.

Fourth-seeded Auburn is moving on in the NCAA tournament. Barely.

Mustapha Heron had 16 points and Auburn hit some key late free throws to hold off No. 13 seed Charleston 62-58 in the first-round of the Midwest Region on Friday.

The Tigers were in a fight the entire second half and trailed 55-54 with 3 minutes left after a 3-pointer from Charleston’s Marquise Pointer. But Bryce Brown’s 3 put the Tigers back in front and Jared Harper added a 3-pointer with 1:14 left to give the Tigers a 59-56 lead. Charleston had chances in the final minute to close the gap but missed three key free throws and Grant Riller’s attempt at a tying 3-pointer in the final 10 seconds was well short. It appeared Riller was fouled but no call was made.

Jarrell Brantley had 24 points to lead Charleston.

Miles Bridges scored 29 points, and third-seeded Michigan State outlasted 14th-seeded Bucknell 82-78.

The Spartans advance to play the winner of the TCU-Syracuse game.

Michigan State led just 44-40 at halftime but held the Bison to 10-of-28 shooting in the second. Zach Thomas scored 27 points for Bucknell before fouling out on a technical with 6:06 remaining.

Bucknell made five 3-pointers in the last 90 seconds or so to make the final score close —a flurry that seemed to impress even the Michigan State fans in Detroit — but the outcome wasn’t really in doubt late.

Barry Brown scored 18 points, and ninth-seeded Kansas State led wire-to-wire to post a 69-59 victory over No. 8 Creighton on Friday night despite playing without leading scorer Dean Wade.

Mike McGuirl added 17 points and Kamau Stokes had 11 as the Wildcats reached the final 32 in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2012. Wade had been expected to play after suffering a stress fracture in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tournament, but never saw the floor.

His teammates picked him up, particularly on defense.

Creighton came into the game ranked 10th in scoring in Division I at 84.3 points per game but tied a season-low with 59 points after shooting 33.8 percent from the field, including 26 percent from beyond the 3-point arc.

Leading scoring Marcus Foster, who spent two seasons at Kansas State, was held scoreless for the first 28 1/2 minutes and finished with five points on 2-of-11 shooting.

8:45 p.m.

The Xavier Musketeers are looking every bit of a No. 1 seed thanks to senior guards J.P. Macura and Trevon Bluiett.

Macura scored 18 points and Bluiett added 17 as the Musketeers took a 49-37 lead into halftime over No. 16 seed Texas Southern. Macura took care of the scoring early, hitting seven of his first eight shots, including all four beyond the arc. He scored 15 points during a 21-2 run by the  Musketeers as Xavier responded to falling behind 20-13. Macura capped the run with a 3 putting Xavier up 34-22 with 7:12 left.

Bluiett scored seven down the stretch, including his third 3-pointer for a 49-29 lead with 1:39 left.

But the Tigers, who won their first NCAA Tournament game in the First Four to advance, finished the half scoring the final eight points. Guard Demontrae Jefferson stole the ball for a layup that not only beat the buzzer but drew a foul. He hit the free throw to pull Texas Southern closer at halftime.

Auburn is trying to avoid becoming the second No. 4 seed to lose at San Diego State’s Viejas Arena in the NCAA Tournament.

The Tigers are tied at 25 with College of Charleston at halftime of their Midwest Region matchup on Friday night.

The Tigers are shooting horribly. They’ve made only 9 of 32 field goals for 28.1 percent, and have missed all 13 3-pointers.

Charleston is shooting 40.7 percent and has rallied from an early deficit.

The Cougars’ Grant Riller has 12 points and is the only player in double figures.

The injury to Purdue center Isaac Haas changes the complexion of Sunday’s matchup between the Boilermakers and in-state rival Butler.

Haas is out for the rest of the NCAA Tournament with an elbow injury.

“Obviously the first thought goes out to Isaac and his family and Purdue and their program,” said Butler coach LaVall Jordan, whose team beat Arkansas immediately after Purdue’s win over Cal State Fullerton. “You hate that for anybody, but especially a senior and his last run, for that to take him out when they had a really good team, a really good chance to make a deep run.”

That’s not to say the Boilermakers can’t go far without Haas. Backup Matt Haarms is actually an inch taller at 7-foot-3.

“I think our mentality doesn’t change. It’s not like they’re going to play four guys,” Jordan said. “They have other players that are really good. We’ve got to be prepared for them.”

Looks like playing the nation’s toughest schedule has helped Texas Southern prepare for the NCAA Tournament.

When No. 1 seed Xavier took a 13-4 lead, Texas Southern answered with an even bigger run of its own and reeled off the next 16 points hitting all five shots. Robert Lewis’ 3 capped the run and put the Tigers up 20-13 with 12:18 left in the first half.

The Tigers played their first 13 games on the road to earn money for the SWAC program, and that schedule included visits to Gonzaga, Ohio State, Kansas, Clemson, Oregon and Baylor. Texas Southern lost all 13 of those games. But coach Mike Davis says that schedule was planned to prepare his Tigers for March and the games that matter most.

Scrappy Bucknell is hanging right with third-seeded Michigan State through 20 minutes.

In front of a partisan crowd of Spartans fans in Detroit, the Bison rallied from an 11-point deficit and actually took a 28-27 lead at one point, delighting the small but spirited group of Bucknell supporters in attendance.

Michigan State leads 44-40 at halftime, but that’s not a huge margin considering the Spartans shot 59 percent from the field.

Bucknell’s Zach Thomas has 20 points.

No Wade? No problem for Kansas State.

The ninth-seeded Wildcats lead No. 8 seed Creighton 32-26 at halftime despite playing without leading scorer Dean Wade, who spent all 20 minutes sitting on the bench cheering on his teammates.

Dean suffered a stress fracture in his left foot in the Big 12 Conference tournament, but coach Bruce Weber said earlier this week that he expected Wade to be ready for the first round.

Wade is suited up and does not have a protective boot on his foot.

He is averaging 16.7 points per game.

The Texas Southern Tigers started the season losing their first 13 games. They’re in Nashville for their first-round game trying to see if they can extend their eight-game winning streak by doing something that’s never been done.

Knock off a top seed as a No. 16 seed.

The Tigers of the Southwestern Athletic Conference won the first NCAA Tournament game in the program’s history Wednesday night knocking off North Carolina Central in the First Four in Dayton.

They tip off against Xavier, which is playing its first game ever as a No. 1 seed, in the first round of the West Region.

Creighton’s Marcus Foster was struggling in the first half against his former team, Kansas State. The senior guard was 0 for 3 from the field and had yet to score as the eighth-seeded Bluejays trailed 25-16 to the ninth-seeded Wildcats with 4:36 left in the first half.

Foster spent two seasons at Kansas State before being kicked off the team for disciplinary reasons in 2015.

He transferred to Creighton, where has played the last two seasons after sitting out a year. He’s the team’s leading scorer this season with 20.3 points per game.

Nevada coach Eric Musselman was pumped up after his team beat Texas in overtime in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and his locker room speech that was broadcast live ended up being rated PG-13.

The CBS/Turner cameras caught Musselman three times, twice loud and clear, dropping an obscenity while excitedly congratulating his team. After the third time, the cameras cutaway.

Musselman then opened his postgame news conference by apologizing for his language.

Caleb Martin made three clutch 3-pointers in overtime for Nevada and the seventh-seeded Wolf Pack came from behind to force overtime and then beat 10th-seeded Texas 87-83 in the East Regional.

Nevada erased a double-digit second-half lead by the Longhorns and fouled out Texas star Mo Bamba at the end of regulation.

Martin made the biggest shots, but Nevada could not miss, going 6 for 6 in OT and scoring 19 points. The Wolf Pack advance to the second round against No. 2 seed Cincinnati by earning its first NCAA Tournament victory since 2007.

Meanwhile, Texas coach Shaka Smart fell to 2-6 in the NCAA Tournament, including his time at VCU, since a Final Four run in 2013.

West Virginia did its part and has set up one crazy Mountain State showdown way out on the West Coast.

The fifth-seeded Mountaineers ousted No. 12 seed Murray State 85-68 in the first round of the East Region. The victory sets up a round of 32 matchup with in-state rival Marshall on Sunday. The 13th-seeded Thundering Herd upset No. 4 seed Wichita State earlier Friday.

West Virginia’s do-everything star Jevon Carter led the way with 21 points and seven assists. Carter was also part of a tremendous defensive effort on Murray State standout Jonathan Stark. Stark entered the game averaging 21.8 points per game but was held to nine points on 1-of-12 shooting.

Terrell Miller led the Racers with 27 points. The Racers had won 13 straight entering the NCAAs, the second-longest win streak in the country.

I always miss my mum and dad and my tight knit friend group at home. I miss the spontaneity to meet up or the nights of conversation on the balcony or couch with my mum after i return from work or a party or something.

I think so! i believe humans are in general inherently good. But it should only be a second chance. When it comes to relationship i think thats especially important, as you also need to look out for yourself. And concerning prisons for example the second chance should be a REAL second chance, and not be designed for the inmates to fail at rehabilitation.
