🌸 Ivy's 900 Celebration 🌸
Ummmmm so this is insane:
Tumblr media
Thank you so much to all my lovely followers and friends 🥹 if I try to actually express emotion I will become sappy and then die soooo onto the ask game!
A lot of these asks are stolen from my 300 follower celebration last year (cause they were fun) but I have added a couple new ones as well!
🍓 - send me a quote (can be from a tsc book or just a quote you like) and I'll write it out in a pretty fineliner (cause I bought them ages ago and I want my money's worth)
🍊 - I'll shuffle my Liked Songs playlist and give you my favourite lyric(s) from the first song that plays
🍋 - send me a tsc ship and I'll tell you what song(s) I associate with them (I'll be honest a lot of these will be Taylor Swift)
🍏 - give me a tsc character/ship/friendship and I'll give you my honest opinion on them, and how I first thought of them vs how I feel about them now etc (basically I just want an excuse to talk about tsc characters lol)
🫐 - give me a tsc character/ship and I'll make a lil moodboard for them!
🍇 - send me any colour or shade (e.g. lavender) and I'll make a moodboard with that colour of the tsc character who's aesthetic I think it matches
(Here's a list of moodboards I have already made)
So yeah! You're welcome to send more than one request in the same ask, also just bear with me, these asks might take me a little while to answer because I'm ill at the moment and have an exam coming up <3
Tagging some mutuals under the cut!! Sorry if I've forgotten anyone (very likely that I have 😬), like I said I have a cold, and also sorry if you didn't wanna be tagged in this! No pressure to respond to it <3 and also if I haven't tagged you that doesn't mean I don't wanna talk to you so pls still come say hi :)

900 followers prompt list!!
Tumblr media
We just hit 900 followers on this blog and I’m honestly so speechless! Thank you everyone for loving and supporting this blog ❤️
In celebration, I decided to make a prompt list for all of you authors and inspiring authors to help you write wether you’re on a writer’s block or aren’t sure what to write exactly. I will track this via aizawakashi prompts.
So, without further ado, here’s the prompt list!
All fandom:
- You return home after a long day at work and your character interest showers you in kisses and pampers you the whole day with your favorite food and cuddles with you watching your favorite movie.
- Day at the beach! You and your character interest head to the beach for the weekend to relax and flee from the hectic city life.
- 7 minutes in heaven!! Bored with nothing to do, you recommend playing 7 minutes in heaven with your (multi) character interest.
- Surprising your husband at work by bringing them their lunch or desserts because you know they’ve been working very hard lately and you just want to cheer them up.
- Masquerade ball au! You are invited to a masquerade ball. Alone and nervous, a handsome and mysterious man offers to dance with you. You are charmed by him and slowly start to crush on him. You were to kiss but suddenly, the clock stuck midnight and he vanishes. Disappointed, you look for him everywhere for months. And when you find him, you discover that he was a [insert favorite mythical creature] and offers you to join him for all of eternity.
- Meeting your parents au! After being together for a long time, it was finally time to introduce your boyfriend to your family. You were anxious that they wouldn’t get along but were surprised when they did! Later that night, your mother pulls you to the side and said that she thinks he would be the perfect husband.
- Haunted house au! Queue the funny montage scenes. Lots of hand holding and hiding behind each other.
Naruto:
- You challenge your crush Naruto to a ramen eating contest. Kiba and Shikamaru bet that Naruto would win while Sai, ino and Sakura bet their money on you. The winner is up to you.
- Kakashi cries after spending an hour teaching his son new words. Worried, you rush to the room only to find your son giggling at his dad while Kakashi is in a state of crying and laughing. Concerned, you asked your husband if he was okay. He replied that his son just kept making mistakes and it was the cutest thing ever and Kakashi didn’t know how to deal with such cuteness.
- Wanting to help Neji with his rebellious phase, you give him an all goth/emo makeover. Piercings, tattoos, ripped jeans, the whole work. You teach him to have fun and let loose. Hiashi is angry, forbids him from seeing you but Neji stands up for himself, fights for you and for his freedom. Hiashi reconsiders.
- While on watch on a mission, Sai couldn’t sleep and was entranced by your beauty so he decided to do a quick sketch of you while you watched over your team as they slept, not knowing that Sai was awake.
- Kakashi introduces you to his dogs and waits for their approval. You take this very seriously as you want to impress them because they were his family.
- Seducing Shikamaru while dancing at the club. You two have been flirting for a while, making empty promises of showing each other a good time. After a long mission where the sexual tension between you was high, you finally decided to do something about it.
- Cooking date with Itachi! You help Itachi cook dinner with him and it’s so soft and very cute. You both have a great time and you become so emotional seeing how happy and relaxed Itachi was being.
- Hidan is a guitarist from this new rock band, Akastuki. You have a huge crush on him and one day, you bump into him as he was running away from his rabid fans so you help him escape and hide into this small local cafe that barely had any customers.
One Piece:
- Law was being grumpy because the straw hats decided to stop at a winter island. His and Luffy’s crew were all having fun building snowmen, igloos and making snow angels. You wanted him to join and have fun for once so you took a handful of snow and hit Law straight in the face. A snowball fight commences.
- Zoro gets separated from the straw hats while at a tropical island and wanders off to a small village deep in the forest. He finds you, the village dancer, and is hypnotized by the sway of your body and the teasing gleam in your eyes. He was enjoying himself when, suddenly, criminals raided your village and as he came to your rescue, he was surprised to know that you were strong and were a skilled [insert weapon talent here] and was very impressed...and turned on.
- A beautiful girl joins the straw hats and, for once, Sanji wasn’t attracted. He doesn’t flirt with her, doesn’t call her any terms of endearments and won’t even glance her way. You two would constantly fight and argue and everyone has had enough of your shirt. The straw hats lock you up in a room until you work things out. You were surprised that Sanji treated you this way because he had never had a serious crush on someone and didn’t know how to process his emotions.
- Ace meets Tama’s older sister while at Wano. He was drawn to your kindness and dedication to restore your village. A short romance affair  between you began, and he offered you to join Whitebeard but refused because you had to take care of your sister. You were devastated when Luffy told you what happened to Ace.
- Luffy falls in love with a female chef. He was so in love with your cooking that he said your food was better than Sanji. Queue a cooking battle between you and the blonde chef. Luffy was the judge and  you both worked very hard to impress the judge. Of course, Luffy being Luffy declares the both of you as winners. You and Sanji become best friends.
My Hero Academia:
- Aizawa runs into his college ex-girlfriend and was baffled to see her working with the League of Villains, and worse, is Dabi’s girlfriend. He blames himself and doesn’t know if he can fight you or not since he still had feelings for you. Their reason for their break up is up to you.
- Dabi is infatuated with a fiery quirkless civilian who wouldn’t take anyone’s shit. She doesn’t really care about the whole hero vs villain thing and Dabi is just interested in her mindset and philosophy. The two work together and reader offers him a place to stay and heal his wounds after encountering heroes.
- While working with LoV, Hawks is drawn to villain reader who has a quirk similar to poison ivy who is also working as a double spy against the superheroes. The two team up and they’re the strongest, most feared team anyone has ever encountered.
- Reader is Overhaul’s childhood best friend and own personal nurse. She is just as ruthless and evil as Overhaul but something in Eri’s eyes and gentle aura softens her up. She struggles between helping Eri and being loyal to Overhaul.
- Aizawa’s mom has been nagging for him to get married for almost ten years now. she wasn’t getting any younger and wanted grandkids as soon as possible. Understanding his friend’s stress and frustration, Hizashi comes up with a plan of getting Aizawa into a fake relationship with reader who works as a support teacher. Queue awkward encounters, kissing in front of Aizawa’s mom and Aizawa retelling the story of how the two of you started dating.
- Dabi wonders what’s it like to be a civilian and live a normal life. He hides his scars with make up and cleans up his looks to blend in with society and live a normal life. During his experiment, he meets reader with a low rank ice quirk who works at an ice cream parlor. No one knows of his double life and frankly, Dabi doesn’t know if he wants to return back to being a villain, especially when he started developing feelings for the reader.

Low-key and mystical performance praise What is the investment idea of ??Spark Capital
Two weeks ago, a number of companies invested by Spark Capital completed acquisitions and exits and the next circular of investments by additional first-tier money, including food delivery company Postmates, clever mirror firm Mirror, quick messaging company Discord, and so forth. In June, they also completed 6 new investments. Such outstanding performance during the epidemic is quite rare in the VC circle. This program discusses what kind of fund Spark Capital is definitely, and the evaluation of these invested and acquired companies. What sort of company is Spark Capital Lively and lively: Although Spark Capital is in Silicon Valley, it seems that there is not much discussion about it, in fact it is not really a first-line fund. Louis: Because they started in Boston and are not of pure Silicon Valley descent, they are not on the list of top-tier Silicon Valley funds. But judging from their purchase portfolio, it really is an extremely competitive company. The founders of Spark Capital (Bijan Sabet, etc.) also mentioned that they encountered many obstacles if they "fight" from Boston to Silicon Valley. Lively and vigorously: Their team is not big, mainly divided into two funds, one for earlier investment and the other for growth. Today their initial administration scale is 450 million U.S. bucks, and the growth period is 900 million. The total amount is approximately 4 billion U.S. dollars in AUM (property under management). What makes me more eye-catching is the businesses that Bijan has committed to, such as Twitter, Tumblr, Trello, OMGPOP, Foursquare, and also Stack Overflow. Generally, one vote is one standard. Louis: Bijan is still very good. Both Twitter and Tumblr invested quite early, and he invested in the business when Twitter got just 12 employees. Founder of Bijan Sabet Spark Capital Their partners are not many, and some are drawn from the investee company. For instance, in the first days of Twitter, Kevin Thau was employed as a fund partner. Kevin later on led the investment in Mirror, which was recently acquired. Which companies have you invested in? Lively voice: Let's talk about the most famous Postmates first. Louis: Postmates may be the top foods delivery business in the United States, and its market share is most likely No. 4. The first choice is DoorDash, accompanied by Uber Eats, No. 3 is Grubhub, and No. 4 is basically Postmates. Lately Postmates was acquired simply by Uber, and you will furthermore see Uber Eats' ambitions. Image supply: foodondemandnews.com Suffering from the epidemic, Uber's first-quarter financial report had been ugly. Although overall revenue is rising, the net loss is approximately 3 x that of the same time period this past year, reaching $2.936 billion. They also laid off employees consistently, layoffs about a quarter of these employees inside a month. Although Uber's overall loss is expanding, Uber Eats's business has skyrocketed. Uber Eats' total bookings are US$4.683 billion, which is 30% of total revenue and a 52% year-on-year increase. So the epidemic actually taught Uber a lesson. We all said before that if startups can grasp among the four requires of humans, they may become giants. But Uber is rolling out to this year, and it has discovered that the 4 major rigid requirements may also be in order. Image source: digital.hbs.edu More than a month ago, there have been rumors that Uber can acquire Grubhub, the company with the 3rd largest market share. DoorDash's current market share is 45%, Grubhub has 28%, and Uber provides 17%. If Uber successfully acquired Grubhub a month ago, its total market talk about could be add up to DoorDash. Afterwards, a European giant named Just Eat Takeaway acquired Grubhub, that is equivalent to the merger of Ele.me personally and Baidu Waimai. So Uber could only turn around to find Postmates. Around 2012, Nabeel, somebody of Spark Funds, entered Postmates in a valuation of 73 million through the B circular, and the business was eventually acquired by Uber for $2.6 billion. Spark Capital offers its own expenditure philosophy. The CEO of Postmates will be neither a graduate of the CS main from an American Ivy League college nor a senior executive encounter in a big company. Its CEO is really a German. After dropping out of university, he's got experienced various locations in European countries for a long period. Although the price of $2.65 billion isn't high for Spark Capital, it is not a case of sensation like Twitter. But it can be seen that their investments have become stable. Lively and lively: Postmates has a total financing of nearly 900 million US dollars, so the price of 2.6 billion US bucks did not help make everyone earn often, but at least it is profitable. Their Website had two rounds of financing this past year, one in January and something in September. As you stated, this industry is as well money-burning and competition is as well fierce. Louis: For early investors want Spark Capital, it is still a good result. Uber nearly bought Grubhub. If this list is completed, it is unlikely to end up being still left to Postmates. Lively: How will be Mirror, a relatively new company? Louis: Friends who make use of Instagram should be able to see this company's ads frequently. It is a D2C brand that is a yoga exercise mirror for exercise. It looks no different from ordinary mirrors, but electronic, you can try yourself in the mirror, follow the yoga instructor in the mirror to accomplish yoga, and there are other fitness lessons. Mirror's mirror markets for under US$1,500, also it had approximately US$100 million in revenue last year. Image supply: Mirror official website The home fitness field in the usa is relatively popular. Probably the most popular one is Peloton, which is a bike for exercising in the home. Many huge tech circles and VC circles have this type of bike in the home. The cost of this car is expensive, more than 2,000 US dollars. Peloton was also successfully listed this past year, and the existing market value is about 19 billion US dollars. Lively: Where is the selling point of Mirror? Louis: The prospective market for Mirror is relatively high-end. Individuals above the center class in the usa are suffering from good fitness routines. They cannot visit the gym during the epidemic. Increasing numbers of people are considering how exactly to maintain health and fitness habits in the home. Mirror's $100 million in revenue this past year was not a big explosion, thus Lululemon's acquisition of this company was also a bold attempt through the epidemic. The features of Mirror are reflected in product design and social attributes. The high stickiness of Peloton customers is also due to the social nature. You can view how far your friends have ridden by riding a bicycle every day. Just like Line's methods ranking, there will be peer pressure. Image resource: Peloton official website And the complex threshold of Mirror hardware isn't too high, a few courses on a mirror. Additionally, there are many home fitness startups in China, including startups that benchmark Peloton or Mirror. The prerequisite for home fitness in the usa may be the maturity of the exercise industry and the popularization of outdoor exercise practices. But it continues to be a comparatively new thing in China. As a result, whether domestic exercise can achieve how big is the United States remains to be verified. Another company Spark Capital invested in is certainly Discord, the former entered the marketplace at a valuation of $22 million in the A round. The new round is led by Index Ventures, and today has a valuation of 3.5 billion U.S. dollars and keeps growing very fast. Image source: medium.com Discord can be an software for tone of voice and textual content chat. After logging in, you can see that its interface is very much like Slack, but their audiences are very different. Slack is really a SaaS firm of to B, and their users are all enterprises. The primary audience of Discord is in the gaming circle, where the voice function can be used the most. To place it bluntly, this is a software application for everyone to play video games, and the CPU occupies very little. Along with game communication, additional communication may also be performed on it. Many users of Discord are attracted from Reddit. Reddit is an extremely popular discussion board in the usa. Peer-to-peer conversation is fairly laborious. There is no personal messaging and quick messaging functions. Therefore, many large Reddit stations will open their own servers on Discord. Currently Discord has 45 million users and 9 million DAU. Even though initial feature set was even more casual, which was not the same as Slack's starting place, some schools in Europe already are using Discord for classes. So actually, Discord has mixed the functions of Slack and Zoom. This is a thing that many startups wish to accomplish but have not completed, because the United Claims can be used to doing a single function, and performing a good job first. Discord also found a good entry point in an individual dimension after combining the features of Slack and Zoom. They entered the market through the overall game segment and expanded to other areas. I think the potential customers are quite good. Lively voice: simply talked about the voice interaction and chat field, we are able to mention Clubhouse again. Louis: Clubhouse is also an extremely popular startup in Silicon Valley recently. A16z invested 12 million US dollars, with a valuation of around 100 million US dollars. But Clubhouse's products have not however seen everyone, as the current consumer invitation system. Now generally there are only 1,500 customers, basically all are tech giants, journalists, CEOs or some Hollywood celebrities. The product is founded on voice social media, and Clubhouse really wants to disrupt the podcast industry. They believe that podcasts can be converted into real-time chats. For example, many large bosses are usually chatting, and ordinary people can pay attention to them instantly and take part in interaction. Image source: techcrunch.com Clubhouse's environment is that users can easily see many areas after successfully logging in. For example, in this chat room, you can find leaders from Spark Funds discussing some emerging topics, and I wish to proceed in and pay attention. We just mentioned that it had been invested 12 million US bucks by a16z, including 2 million secondary shares (old shares). Both founders have cashed out US$2 million before the product came out. This is rare in the VC circle, and I don't believe this is a good sign. However, from the perspective of two extremely popular businesses, Discord and Clubhouse, after the epidemic, there is still a lot of room in the voice social and video fields. Lively voice: Spark Capital committed to 2 new companies in June, and the remaining 4 companies are fresh rounds of previous investment. One of the newly invested companies is called Teooh, which is a bit like the Sims 3D avatar. It could socialize, hold meetings, or hold workshops, reside podcasts or remote control team building. There are several consumer scenarios. Spark Funds casts a seed circular. Image resource: teooh.com Louis: Considering its web site now is quite "fun". It has made a 3D animation model for everyone, and the animation level is quite rough. But in the beta stage of the product, we can't use its current design to predict its future development. In case you are beginning to consider the prototypes of Google or Facebook, you may find it inexplicable. Maybe after a year or two, this type of product could have a qualitative leap. Lively voice: Another company that Spark Capital committed to in June is Tatch, whose function is to monitor sleep quality. This company was established in 2017. The form is a small patch like a plaster which can be connected to your body to monitor sleep high quality in eight various dimensions, including breathing and switching over during sleep. In the future, there may be cooperation with doctors. There are various such companies. Why do Spark Capital spend money on this company? Image supply: tatchhealth.com Louis: There are many people in this industry, including Apple. Apple also lately introduced a sleep monitoring function. Spark Capital recently committed to a company, that i think is quite interesting, called Quaestor. It is a SaaS item that connects investors and founders. On the main one hand, it helps investors manage the business they spend money on, and alternatively, it helps entrepreneurs manage investor relations. The management of most VC organizations is in fact very "primitive", and everyone uses Excel and E-mail. The founder of the product can be a VC background, and one of them was something manager at Carta before. Lively voice: Carta can be a particularly interesting product. Essentially, during the past two years, everyone has used it to communicate with investors about the stock situation. Louis: Indeed, Carta basically achieved the monopoly of this type. Carta is really a SaaS software managed by way of a startup company's shares. Start-up companies need to open choice pools for workers and manage shares for traders. This software program can do 409A valuation. You can even trade shares on it. Equity dealings in the principal market supply the impact of a secondary market. So Carta's item supervisor was dug out to accomplish Quaestor, which is reasonable. Image source: Quaestor Quaestor's products presently do not directly cope with equity dealings. At the beginning, they could still start from the perspectives of CRM, data collection, and data management, rather than directly starting finance. Lively voice: Quaestor's main function is to see how very much money is in the account of the invested company, quarterly earnings, etc. Whether it's for entrepreneurs or traders, this is actually very challenging to manage. How to talk about these data regularly without leaking the data is still very complicated. If this piece can be achieved, it'll be a good market segment. The founder's judgment on the problem of the VC industry Louis: Both main companions of Spark Funds are usually Bijan and Nabeel. Bijan may be the founder of Spark Funds in Boston, and Nabeel is really a partner in the San Francisco office, both with an excellent investment history. Each of them also have a podcast, Hallway Chat. In the latest episode, they talked about the development trend of the VC sector this year. Image source: Apple company Podcast Weighed against the household VC sector, Silicon Valley seems "lazy". It feels as though half a year is on christmas every calendar year. There are always a group of holidays beginning with Halloween, Thanksgiving, Xmas and New 12 months. There are basically no people in the last two months Worked. Because these VCs may also be bigwigs, they are not young and their children are older. In summer time, the kids have summer holiday, and they went again during the past two months. Therefore, the overall US VC sector feels very lazy. When the epidemic broke out, it experienced that individuals were not working. Bijan of Spark Funds also asked Nabeel, how can you think the overall purchase of VC changes this year. Nabeel's thinking is not exactly like everybody else. He thinks VC will undoubtedly be increasing this year. Companion, Nabeel Hyatt Spark Capital He said that whenever the epidemic simply started, everyone started to panic. After therefore a long time of VC work, he felt like a startup business for the first time. Following the fall in the US secondary market place, it rebounded strongly, which lots of people did not expect, and it also gave the primary market a enhance. Early investment may not have been affected an excessive amount of, however the growth stage is certainly picking up. It is a boost from the secondary market, and the panic provides gradually stabilized. Nabeel also mentioned that it might not be possible to talk to the founder face-to-face when making investments, so it is often necessary to make more decisive decisions. One pattern they notice is that good startups are becoming more popular. Why Clubhouse can be rushed to vote by the two top VC companies, Benchmark and a16z before the product release, and finally won by a16z, is because of the higher price. Therefore Nabeel believes that this year's VC industry scenario might not decline. But Bijan stated that previously two years in Silicon Valley, everyone feels that bubbles must exist, especially in the technologies industry. In 2019, the bubble in fact existed. So in 2020, if the VC market is still in an upward craze, both of them think it is a far more dangerous signal. Recommended reading Chinese giants retreat overseas. For a time in 1959 (as if the admission of Alaska and Hawai’i as full-fledged states wasn’t good enow), it seemed as if Huckleberry Hound was the big sensation nationwide--and especially on college campuses.
Witness this item from The Miami News quoted in the post (and, hence, in its entire) offering some explanation:
The college kids of the nation are officially adopting Huckleberry Hound.
Huckleberry Hound, or Channel 7 at 7 tonight, is that Southern-drawling pooch originally designed to amuse the kids. He's the pen-and-ink child of Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera, the creators of Tom and Jerry. Tom the cat and Jerry the mouse have entertained movie-goers during the past 20 years. They also brought MGM seven Academy Awards. But Huck's philosophy—and his friend, Yogi Bear—caught the fancy and affection of adults. Right here at The Miami News, in fact, a few of our reporters and editors tote about a lofty disdain for television in general. But four words—"It's Huckleberry Hound time"—will send them sprinting for the tube. The college kids are proclaiming their esteem. The University of Washington held a "Huck Hound Day" on campus and 11,000 students joined his fan club. Southern Methodist and Texas Christian Universities have dedicated days to Huck this October. At UCLA, Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity initiated him and hung his portrait over the fireplace. Homecoming Theme In the Big Ten, Huckleberry Hound is the theme of Ohio State's homecoming celebration. All the admiration isn't Ivy-League, either. Bars have been named for him; poker games adjourned for him; airplanes decorated with his picture and speed limits broken for him. Why? "Huck is put upon, embarrassed, taken advantage of and thrust into horrendous situations," said one professor. "But he never seems to mind." Perhaps his ability not to mind is the key to his infectious popularity. Hanna and Barbera also turn out the Ruff and Reddy cartoons seen Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. on Channel 7. The duo used to produce 50 minutes of Tom and Jerry cartoons per year for MGM. Last television season, they did more than 900 minutes of cartoons. Their 200 employes use more than a full tank-car of ink a year. It takes 90 separate drawings for one laugh movement, and 10,000 individual drawings for a half-hour cartoon sequence.

lol (literally)
long time no see people!!!! a lot has happened since we last caught up. some expected, some unexpected. temperatures dropped from the 90’s to the 20’s. i began to understand (& enjoy?) american football. i got a job. but the biggest change was that i moved— 900 miles away from where i had been living for 10 years, to be exact. so life’s been pretty crazy. new people, new places, new vocab (“y’all” slips out sometimes,, thanks texas), new routines & new norms.
but overall, it’s been pretty alright. i think pretty alright is pretty good for being in high school, with sports and classes and SATs and ACTs and GPAs and APs and all the other acronyms. it’s been pretty alright— but i get the occasional pit in my stomach when i think of my old school, all the friends i left behind, and the place i never thought i’d consider one of my homes. it snowed there this week. the football team is going to the state championship. big things are happening. seniors will be graduating soon, going out into the real world. lots of big things. but i have new friends here. friends who get up early to go running with me and recommend new netflix shows and DM me funny things on instagram. high school football in texas is an experience on a whole other level. and last week, the weather was in the 70s.
all isn’t perfect, but all is well.
anyway, now that we’re caught up i’ll get to the point. we have 3 weeks of classes between thanksgiving break and winter break. that’s it. 15 days. light work right? but to be honest, thanksgiving break felt a little more like punishment. the second we got back to school it was like our teachers were making up for lost time. here’s a test and three quizzes and an essay and don’t forget about that project due on wednesday!!!!!! we’re down to one week before winter break, and the past two weeks have not given me a second of down time. it’s been H E C T I C. between work and school and the inconvenience that is sleep, i feel a little like i’ve been running a marathon while holding my breath. freshman year me would’ve had multiple mental breakdowns, pulled 4 all nighters in a row, and gone into full panic mode. sophomore year me would’ve considered doing the work, decided against it, gone to bed early, and said “my grades do not determine my value. and if i don’t get into an ivy league so what i’ll still go to college and get a decent job and live a decent life” (side note: grades DONT determine your value & not getting into an ivy league definitely doesn’t mean you won’t live a good life ((if anything it means you’ll be less in debt)) but the key is EFFORT. always try. that is what defines you.) but this is junior year me. a lot has changed. among the changes: my coping mechanisms and reaction to stress. yeah, sometimes i don’t do my homework until the class period before it’s due, or i opt for sleep rather than getting a head start on that essay that’s in the back of my mind. generally, i’ve been doing my best to stay on track but not push myself unhealthily hard. and when it gets too hard, i laugh. that’s it. i laugh. i don’t know why or when this happened, but in the last two weeks, every day i’ve found at least one thing that made me laugh so hard i literally cried and my stomach hurt and i had to sit down. no one else around me thought it was that funny and they all probably thought i was really weird. but i felt great. the stress i’d been overwhelmed with dissipated and my worries suddenly seemed irrelevant and the endorphins released from laughing (scientific fact!!) made me feel like i could do anything. i was well aware that i was going to have 5 hours of homework that night and 4 quizzes the next day but that just made me laugh even harder. life is funny that way. it’s like a runner’s high without having to run 6 miles.
everyone deals with stress in different ways and it’s not until this year that i think i found a healthy (albeit strange) way to manage it, but my point isn’t necessarily exclusive to academic pressure & due dates. life moves quickly. one day you’re in high school, the next you’re in college, and then you blink for a little too long and you’re wrapped up in a career. life. moves. quickly. and if you don’t roll with the punches, the punches are still gonna keep on coming. so what i’m trying to say, i guess, is to enjoy wherever you’re at in life. find joy in the little things. when you find something you love doing, don’t let go of that. don’t let yourself get too busy & lose it. and if you no longer enjoy something you used to, that’s okay. as you change, your interests will change. find something new. something that makes you laugh until no sound comes out and you can’t breathe. for just a few moments in the day, let go of your worries and forget about your to-do list and genuinely enjoy your day. because day by busy day, eventually you’ll realize your whole life passed you by, and you spent it caught up in the “big things” rather than making the most of the little things. the little things that fill the gaps between running errands and reaching word counts and everything you have to do. the whole “can’t see the forest for the trees” thing. you have no boss, no teacher, no coach holding you accountable for doing the little things for yourself. you can go through the motions, live life as a routine. no one is going to give you a bad grade or bench you or fire you.
but filling in those gaps is what makes life go from black and white to full high definition color.
YOU are accountable.
and YOU are deserving.
the little joys in life, the tiny victories, those are what you’re going to remember 10 years from now. 20 years from now. they will be the sunshine on your cloudy days, the flowers in the forest you don’t want to miss.
find the silver lining.
find the humor in the bad.
find a little hope, somewhere, anywhere.
find the good.
find the light.
and on those especially hard days when you can’t,
be a little moment of happy for someone else.
be the good. be the light.
you know that cheesy saying about realizing the little things were the big things?? i’m not one for trite quotes, but i have a feeling that it’s true. and that scares me. it scares me to think that one day i may look back and wish i could do it all differently. so i’m going day by day and i’m laughing. wrong turns happen, bad days happen. but i’m laughing. because no matter how many mistakes i make, i can’t imagine wanting to change anything about a life spent celebrating the good around me, a life spent cherishing the light.

The College Admissions Scandal Isn’t Funny, It’s Infuriating Betches
By now we are all far too familiar with the college admissions scandal involving Desperate Housewive’s Felicity Huffman and Full House’s Lori Loughlin (aka Aunt Becky). The two celebs were brutally and rightfully roasted, shots were fired, memes were made, and the trash fire that is the internet blazed on (though perhaps with one less YouTuber.)
Just as a quick recap: the FBI (yes, that one) recently indicted 40 people in a huge college admissions scam, where parents were doing things like paying to bolster their children’s SAT scores. You know, just some casual fraud. And while the whole story blew up due to celebrity involvement and some absolutely clickworthy details (like how photos were edited to make it look like these kids were on sports teams that they were not lololol), the entire mess is actually less scandalous than it is inevitable. How? Great Q. Because what happened here is one of the many outcomes of a broken education system in the US, where those with privilege and money are able to create opportunities for themselves that others aren’t. It’s a system that rewards people with money and leaves behind people who dare to be born without it. And yes, what happened in this “scandal” is hella illegal, but the most disturbing part about it is that it’s not that far off from how the legal system works. Moreover, the fact that these people thought in their right minds that they could use their money to get their kids into colleges over other hardworking students makes sense when you look at how we have built the college admission process.
did any one else just assume that celebrities paid to get their kids into college and are shocked that it’s actually illegal
— jaboukie (@jaboukie) March 12, 2019
So let’s take a deeper look at just how fucked up this system (take a shot every time I say system) is, shall we? From the moment parents enter their children into school, privilege already plays a major role. Areas where people with higher incomes live have more money to fund their schools, and therefore better education systems. Race comes into play here as well, as many non-white neighborhoods lack the resources to build up their schools. In just one recent example of how this works, the New York Times ran an exposé on NYC’s “elite” high schools (think Gossip Girl) and found that of nearly 900 students admitted to Stuyvesant High School this year, only seven of those students were black. Seven. So, from day one, being white and being wealthy will put you ahead. That is lé fucked.
Tumblr media
By the time kids get to a college application, the system has already made the playing field uneven. Those who could afford to live in a district with good schools are more ready to move on to college. And then there’s college tuition. As you may have heard from Bernie Sanders and/or me at the bar the day my loan payment is due, college tuition is BULLSH*T. The tuition is too damn high! And aside from college costing an insurmountable amount of money for most families, it also creates a situation where people who come from lower income families cannot attend college. And if you’re thinking, “Well they can just get a scholarship! or financial aid!” think again. Scholarships and financial aid are not things you can just *get.* You have to work really damn hard for them and neither are guaranteed, so this again creates a system where those who are less fortunate literally have to work harder to get the things that rich or well off people get while making YouTube videos in their dorm. Again, that is…loco.
Tumblr media
And now we arrive at the topic of filthy rich parents using their money to get their kids into schools they wouldn’t be able to otherwise attend. It’s no secret that certain families that hold legacies at Ivy League schools often make large donations, and because of that the schools let their kids in, even when they are not smart enough. *cough George W. Bush cough*  Yet again, wealth and privilege are two of the requirements when it comes to easily getting into good colleges. And where there’s wealth and privilege, there’s racial injustice as well. And that’s not to say that people of color are never wealthy (of course that is not true), it’s just the reality that white people created a system where we are on top, and because of that it’s much easier for us to obtain/maintain privilege.
When you take all of this into account, it actually isn’t that wild that these celebrities assumed they could pay their kids’ ways into college. That’s how the whole system works; if you have money, you have power, and you have the right to get what you want. I mean, what they did was completely heinous and illegal, and the photoshopping part is objectively hilarious, but it’s really not that far off from what is legally allowed. In the end, what’s the difference between paying $500k to a fake SAT proctor and paying $500k to put your name on a building if the result is the same? You get your C-student into an Ivy, while hardworking, exceptional students struggle to afford their safety school. America’s education system is broken, just like the criminal justice system, and just like many others in this country. They need reworking and revolutionizing, and the time is now. Wow, am I…running for president?
Tumblr media
Heads up, you need to keep up with the news. It’s not cute anymore. That’s why we’ve created a 5x weekly newsletter called The ‘Sup that will explain all the news of the week in a hilarious af way. Because if we weren’t laughing, we’d be crying. Sign up for The ‘Sup now!

Music History (Part 12): Secular Music & Christmas Carols
Many of Josquin's secular songs were also unhappy.  His most well-known song was Mille regretz (A thousand regrets), in which the singer is regretful and self-pitying at having abandoned his beloved.  Sad love songs were common all over Europe, and the advent of music printing helped to spread them widely.
The first piece of printed music that we know of was a piece of plainsong, printed in 1476 by Ulrich Han, in Rome.  Around 1500, Ottaviano Petrucci (a Venetian printer) began publishing songbooks with movable type.  This sped up the dissemination of printed music throughout Europe, although it was expensive.
In England, the songs of the nobility and ordinary people had much the same themes (as do songs today) – the great difficulties of courting, and nature (which was used to describe the difficulties of courting).  The most popular love songs of the Tudor period (1485-1603) were That was my woe; Woefully arrayed; Absent I am; Adew, adew, my hartis lust; I love unloved; and I love, loved, and loved wolde I be.
Not all secular songs were sad, though.  Pastyme with good compayne (by Henry VIII) was a popular favourite.  Others were Hey Trolly Lolly Lo!; Hoyda Hoyda; Jolly Rutterkin; Mannerly Margery; Milk and Ale; and Be Peace! Ye Make Me Spill My Ale!
It's often believed that Henry VIII wrote Greensleeves, but this is unlikely – it probably became well-known in England long after he died.  A more likely author was the composer-poet William Cornysh (1465-1523).  He wrote regularly for Henry VIII's court and strange occasions, and one of his most well-known works is Field of the Cloth of Gold (1520), a strange mixture of fashion & politics.  His other songs have similar chord usage as Greensleeves, and have the same plaintive air.  His most famous song was Ah, Robyn, Gentle Robyn, in which the singer asks a robin for advice on the faithfulness of women.
Church music, on the other hand, was not so cheerful.  Before the Reformation, the singing was mostly done by the choirs & priests; the congregation were expected to repeatedly ask forgiveness, while listening to music on the same theme.  The exception to this was the Christmas carol, and it would have a significant influence on the development of melody & communal music-making in Europe.
The first printed collection of Christmas carols was in 1521, printed by Wynkyn de Worde (William Caxton's apprentice & successor). There was a strong increase in carol composition around in northern Europe around this time, inspired partially by an earlier Italian tradition of lauda (meaning “praises”) or cantiones (meaning “songs”) – tuneful sacred songs that welcomed the Christ-child's birth, and were written for the whole community, including the peasants.  They were written around the same time as the concept of the model manger, which Franciscan friars had thought of in an attempt to get the local shepherds down from the hills and into church.
Dancing songs were another origin of the Christmas carol – in fact, the word “carol” comes from the Ancient Greek choros and Latin choraula/caraula (a circling, singing dance).  Other influences were the pagan celebration of the winter solstice; and some fragments of Advent plainsong.  The northern European carols Personent hodie and Gaudete have their origins in earlier plainchant melodies, and so does Good King Wenceslas.
In dulci jubilo was a very popular carol in the 1400's & early 1500's.  It had a catchy melody, and also two of the distinctive elements of early Christmas carols – 1) a burden or refrain, where it repeats the final line “Oh that we were there, Oh that we were there”; 2) the mixing of Latin with English (or the language of the country it was written in).  This language-mixing was very popular in the 1400's & 1500's, and these lyrics are called macaronic lyrics. (The term macaronic may come from the Italian maccare, meaning “to crush/knead.  The word macaroon, a sweet cake made from crushed almonds, also derives from that verb.)
In countries that had a very cold winter, two non-Christian elements got mixed into carols.  The first was the pagan celebration of the winter & spring solstices, such as in The Holly and the Ivy, which is almost entirely pagan – evergreen shrubs, bark, blossom, horns, berries, the rising of the sun, the running of the deer – only the grafted-in line “and Mary bore Sweet Jesus Christ to be our sweet Saviour” is Christian.
The other non-Christian element was seasonal binge-drinking.  Wassailing (Anglo-Saxon for “saying cheers”) runs through many Christmas carols, such as the early Tudor carol Bryng us in good ale:
Bryng us in good ale, and bryng us in good ale;
Fore owr blyssyd Lady sak, bryng us in good ale.
Bryng us in no befe, for ther is many bonys,
But bryng us in good ale, for that goth downe at onys.
And bryng us in good ale.
Bryng us in no mutton, for that is often lene,
Nor bryng us in no trypys, for thei be syldom clene
But bryng us in good ale.
Bryng us in no eggys, for ther ar many schelles.
But bryng us in good ale, and gyfe us nothing ellys.
The song continues on, comparing various foods to ale and finding them lacking.  After the one line as lip-service to “Our Lady”, it's basically a drinking song.  During the Tudor era, carols about food, drink were very common, surpassed in popularity only by the Victorian era.
The Boar's Head Carol is a once-popular Victorian carol, which actually began as a tribute to an excessively gluttonous banquet at an Oxford college.  Its focus eventually shifted onto the Nativity, comparing Christ's later crucifixion to a wild boar on a spit.
It was quite common for carols to anticipate the Crucifixion.  Those that weren't thinly-disguised drinking songs, or pagan descriptions of forests, tended to focus on the fact that the baby Jesus was eventually going to die a terrible death for mankind's sins.  This trend suggests that Christmas and Passiontide (Easter) songs may have once been linked – the Coventry Carol, for example, is a Christmas lullaby that originated in a Passiontide “Mystery” Play, performed during Holy Week.
While the Christmas carol was gaining popularity, a change in choral texture was taking place.  The tune was shifting to the top voice.
Around 900 BC, monks had begun adding new parts with different notes (rather than just paralleling the main part a certain octave apart) to plainsong tunes, thus beginning the journey towards polyphony. Between 900-1500, two voices became three and then four, and the melody stayed where it was pitch-wise – and because all these new parts had been added, it was now in the middle of the texture.  This is why the top male part in a choir is called the tenor – it was the part that held the main tune, coming from the French tenir & Latin teneo.
The tune had begun to shift to the top voice in some songs during the 1400's, but it was during the 1500's that it became the norm, especially in choral music.  The only European vocal genre that still has the tune in the middle is in barbershop quartets, where the 2nd-highest voice usually sings it.
There were two main reasons for this shift.  The popularity of love songs created a demand for songs that were memorable, which wasn't as possible if the tune was hidden inside the texture.  Second, singing was becoming less constrained by the 3-part/4-part structure. Polyphonic singing was still a popular pastime among the nobility, it is true, but a new generation of singers was growing up, who had learned to accompany themselves to sing solo songs.  At this time, there were a number of instruments to choose from, as new instruments, and improved variations upon old ones, were arriving on the scene.

Ok I'm going to preface this by saying that I struggled with this, idk why it was just tricky, and I had to get sort of abstract/symbolic, so imma explain the choices for this moodboard a little: I focussed on their eye colours for this, so Cristina is brown (coffee cause she loves it and the moonlight path that leads to faerie), Mark is blue and gold (he was the problem child in this moodboard icl) and Kieran is black and silver (the silver is still pretty dark but it's a CROWN so I had to keep it)

The Opinion Pages | OP-ED COLUMNIST Lifting Kids to College Frank Bruni APRIL 26, 2017 Continue reading the main storyShare This Page Share Tweet Email More Save 44 Photo Sierra Williams, a student at University of Southern California, was enrolled in the Neighborhood Academic Initiative. Credit Brad Torchia for The New York Times LOS ANGELES — If you go by the odds, Sierra Williams shouldn’t be in college, let alone at a highly selective school like the University of Southern California. Many kids in her low-income neighborhood here don’t get to or through the 12th grade. Her single mother isn’t college-educated. Neither are Sierra’s two brothers, one of whom is in prison. Her sister has only a two-year associate degree. But when Sierra was in the sixth grade, teachers spotted her potential and enrolled her in the Neighborhood Academic Initiative, or N.A.I., a program through which U.S.C. prepares underprivileged kids who live relatively near its South Los Angeles campus for higher education. She repeatedly visited U.S.C., so she could envision herself in such an environment and reach for it. She took advanced classes. Her mother, like the parents or guardians of all students in the N.A.I., got counseling on turning college into a reality for her child. Sierra, 20, just finished her junior year at U.S.C. An engineering major, she’s already enrolled in a master’s program. “My end goal is to get my Ph.D.,” she told me when I met her recently. She wants to be a professor and, through her example as a black woman in engineering, correct the paucity of minorities in the field. Continue reading the main story ADVERTISEMENT Continue reading the main story It’s now some two decades since the first class of seniors in the N.A.I. graduated from high school and went on to college. More than 900 kids have used the N.A.I. as an on ramp to higher education — more than a third of them ended up at U.S.C. — and that number is growing quickly as the N.A.I. expands. Photo More than 900 kids, including Vanessa Zelaya, center, have used the N.A.I. as an on ramp to higher education, and more than a third of them ended up at U.S.C. Credit Brad Torchia for The New York Times The public school that many N.A.I. enrollees attend, the Foshay Learning Center, was responsible for more new arrivals on the U.S.C. campus last fall than any other public or private high school in America. Nineteen N.A.I. alumni started as freshmen; 11 more transferred from other colleges. And N.A.I. doesn’t even represent the whole of U.S.C.’s efforts to address inadequate socioeconomic diversity at the country’s most celebrated colleges. Although U.S.C. has often been caricatured as a rich kids’ playground — its nickname in some quarters is the University of Spoiled Children — it outpaces most of its peers in trying to lift disadvantaged kids to better lives. Those peers should learn from its example. According to a recently published study whose data was just a few years old, 38 of America’s top colleges, including five from the Ivy League, had more students from families in the top 1 percent of income earners (about $630,000 annually and above) than from those in the bottom 60 percent ($65,000 and below). There are many reasons, principally a failure to identify and recruit disadvantaged kids whose abilities and accomplishments make them perfectly eligible for elite colleges with low acceptance rates. (U.S.C.’s is now about 16.5 percent.) But we also don’t make enough disadvantaged kids eligible in the first place. We don’t guide them through elementary, middle and high school so that they have the necessary grades, scores, skills and mind-sets. This is the problem that U.S.C. has been focusing on: University administrators figure that they can’t just wait for public education to improve and should use some of their considerable resources to chip in themselves somehow. “We’re not doing a good job in K-12 schools,” C. L. Max Nikias, the president of U.S.C., said to me recently. “The pipeline is not there. I feel that puts more responsibility on our shoulders to improve the raw material for us.” Photo At N.A.I., the first class every day is taught in a room on U.S.C.’s campus, so that college is demystified for students like Jessica Hernandez-Flores, center. Credit Brad Torchia for The New York Times At an event in Washington on Wednesday, he plans to urge more colleges to form partnerships with K-12 schools. “I don’t know what is holding them back,” he said. Many are already doing at least a bit of work along those lines, and the importance of continuing these projects, expanding them and exporting them to colleges that lag behind can’t be overstated. Some schools host summer programs for disadvantaged kids. Some send their students and even their faculty members into the communities around them to teach, tutor or mentor needy kids. Some have been instrumental in the establishment of community centers for those kids. But what U.S.C. has done stands out. In addition to the N.A.I., it has been involved in the establishment of three charter high schools serving low-income neighborhoods in its general geographic area. The first of these, U.S.C. Hybrid High, was set in motion by the U.S.C. Rossier School of Education. Last year’s seniors were Hybrid High’s first graduating class. All 84 were accepted into four-year colleges. The second charter, U.S.C. East College Prep, is in its second year, so it has only freshmen and sophomores. The third, U.S.C. College Prep Santa Ana, has only freshmen. Meantime there are hundreds of kids from the sixth through 12th grades in the N.A.I. During high school, their first class every day is taught in a room on U.S.C.’s campus, so that college is demystified and becomes a fixed part of their vocabularies. They head back to campus on Saturdays for special classes and enrichment activities. And they must have a parent or guardian willing to come to campus for separate sessions. Photo An N.A.I. class on the campus of U.S.C. Credit Brad Torchia for The New York Times One recent weekday morning I sat in on an A.P. English class that a Foshay Learning Center teacher was holding in a room at U.S.C. Her 31 students were all in the N.A.I. All were minorities. Almost all spoke up readily and repeatedly as they discussed aspects of the novel “Their Eyes Were Watching God,” including themes that connected it to another book they’d recently read, “Middlemarch.” Sign Up for the Opinion Today Newsletter Every weekday, get thought-provoking commentary from Op-Ed columnists, the Times editorial board and contributing writers from around the world. SEE SAMPLE MANAGE EMAIL PREFERENCES PRIVACY POLICY “Freedom means … what?” said the teacher, Jacqueline Barrios, and in this instance she answered her own question. “The ability to have a voice. To think for yourself.” Photo Sergio Lopez, a student at N.A.I., will be the first among his parents and siblings to finish high school. Credit Brad Torchia for The New York Times ADVERTISEMENT Continue reading the main story During a pause, I asked the students how many had a parent who had graduated from college. Only four hands went up. I asked how many would be the first in their families, including siblings, to enroll in college. Eighteen of the kids raised their hands. One was Sergio Lopez, 17. He later told me that he’d be the first among his parents and siblings even to finish high school. His dad, a mechanic, immigrated from Guatemala and his mom, a homemaker, from Honduras. 44 COMMENTS Sergio was just accepted into U.S.C. and will head there next fall, joining a student body that isn’t as lopsided with the 1 percent as many other elite colleges are. According to that study, 13.9 percent of U.S.C.’s students are in that bracket, while 21.9 percent are from the bottom 60 percent of family incomes. He told me that any nerves he might have felt about college, especially as a first-generation college student, are allayed by how familiar U.S.C.’s environs have become. “It got comfortable,” he said, adding that an N.A.I.-assigned mentor at U.S.C. has given him tips on how best to study: Ditch the dorm for the library, which has fewer distractions. That may be a no-brainer for some kids. For others, nothing about college is obvious — or inevitable.

London Theatre Company announces the first productions at its new Bridge Theatre, which opens this October on the river by Tower Bridge and City Hall.
The theatre opens on 26 October 2017 (previews from 18 October) with a new comedy, Young Marx by Richard Bean and Clive Coleman, directed by Nicholas Hytner with Rory Kinnear in the title role. This is followed in January by Julius Caesar, staged in promenade by Nicholas Hytner, with Ben Whishaw as Brutus. Then in April comes a new play, Nightfall, by rising playwright and novelist Barney Norris, directed by Laurie Sansom. Tickets for these three productions go on sale today (priority booking from 19 April, public booking opens 27 April) priced from £15 to £65 with a limited number of premium seats available[i].
From summer 2018, productions will include a new play by Lucinda Coxon based on the novel Alys, Always by Harriet Lane; a new play by Nina Raine about JS Bach, played by Simon Russell Beale; flatpack, a new play by John Hodge; The Black Cloud, a new play by Sam Holcroft from the novel by Fred Hoyle; and Carmen Havana, a version of Bizet’s opera by Lucy Prebble with choreography by Miguel Altunaga and directed by Nicholas Hytner.
London Theatre Company, which was founded by Nicholas Hytner and Nick Starr on leaving the National Theatre after twelve years, will focus on the commissioning and production of new shows, as well as staging the occasional classic. At The Bridge, it will present four or five new productions year-round, playing Tuesday to Sunday, plus a Monday night programme which will include intimate gigs, the live recording of a new podcast series and conversations on food, fashion, politics and science.
Backed by a small group of senior Venture Capital investors, LTC’s raison d’être is to create a culture, ethos and economic model that supports writers, directors, designers and actors to work at scale in a space that is complementary to those of the subsidised theatre and West End. In time LTC hopes to open more theatres in London, to be able to host productions from the subsidised theatre, and to transfer its own productions to the West End and beyond.
LTC commissioned the new theatre from architect Steve Tompkins. He and his colleague Roger Watts at Haworth Tompkins have designed a 900-seat adaptable auditorium that can respond to shows with different formats, among them end-stage, thrust-stage and promenade (each of which will be used in the course of the opening three productions).
The Bridge is the first wholly new theatre of scale to be added to London’s commercial theatre sector in 80 years[ii], and the first to be built outside the historic West End. It has a stunning riverside location at the foot of Tower Bridge next to City Hall and is 5-10 minutes’ walk from the transport hub of London Bridge, whose new concourse opens onto Tooley Street in spring next year. The Bridge is situated in Berkeley Homes’ One Tower Bridge development amongst ten new restaurants opening this year[iii].
Haworth Tompkins, who won the Stirling Prize in 2014 for the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool, collaborated frequently with Nick Starr and Nicholas Hytner at the National Theatre, including on the recent NT refurbishment, the Shed and NT Studio and also with Nick Starr on the Almeida’s two temporary theatres at King’s Cross and at Gainsborough Studios.
The Bridge auditorium is a collaboration between Haworth Tompkins, LTC and Tait Stage Technologies – winner of two Queen’s Awards for Export. It is made of precision-engineered steel with oak finishes in a modular construction – a first of its kind – which also incorporates the air conditioning, house lights, power and data.
Nicholas Hytner said: “We want to make bold popular theatre. We’ve commissioned ambitious plays that reach out to embrace the audience, and we’ve built an environment for them that is exciting, welcoming and flexible: a theatre that can be changed to suit the show. We reckon that London needs new theatres, designed for the shows that people make in the 21st century and the expectations that audiences have for a really good night out.”
Nick Starr said: “After the National Theatre, it was time for something new and scary. London is a brilliant city for making and seeing theatre, evidenced by the 25% increase in audiences over the last fifteen years. We think there’s room for a new independent on the scene, driven by both a mission and a bottom line. We hope that will resonate with artists and audiences, and are hugely looking forward to welcoming them to The Bridge.”
[1] A special allocation of £15 seats will be held for Young Bridge, a free scheme for those under 26
[2] “No entirely new theatre has been built on a wholly commercial basis since the Prince of Wales in 1937.” Act Now! Modernising London’s West End Theatres, a report by The Theatres Trust 2003, page 10.

October – December 2017 Nicholas Hytner directs the opening production with Rory Kinnear as YOUNG MARX in the world premiere of a new comedy by Richard Bean and Clive Coleman
1850, and Europe’s most feared terrorist is hiding in Dean Street, Soho. Broke, restless and horny, the thirty-two-year-old revolutionary is a frothing combination of intellectual brilliance, invective, satiric wit, and child-like emotional illiteracy.
Creditors, spies, rival revolutionary factions and prospective seducers of his beautiful wife all circle like vultures. His writing blocked, his marriage dying, his friend Engels in despair at his wasted genius, his only hope is a job on the railway. But there’s still no one in the capital who can show you a better night on the piss than Karl Heinrich Marx.
Rory Kinnear plays Marx and Oliver Chris, Engels. The production reunites the creative team behind Richard Bean’s smash hit One Man, Two Guvnors, with direction by Nicholas Hytner, design by Mark Thompson, music by Grant Olding, lighting by Mark Henderson and sound by Paul Arditti.
The run is from 18 October (opening night Thursday 26 October) until 31 December 2017. The show will be broadcast on National Theatre Live in December.
January – April 2018 David Calder, Michelle Fairley, David Morrissey and Ben Whishaw in JULIUS CAESAR by William Shakespeare, directed by Nicholas Hytner in promenade
Caesar returns in triumph to Rome and the people pour out of their homes to celebrate. Alarmed by the autocrat’s popularity, the educated élite conspire to bring him down. After his assassination, civil war erupts on the streets of the capital.
Nicholas Hytner’s production will be in promenade, thrusting its audience into the street party that greets Caesar’s return, the congress that witnesses his murder, the rally that assembles for his funeral and the chaos that explodes in its wake. Ben Whishaw and Michelle Fairley play Brutus and Cassius, leaders of the coup, David Calder plays Caesar and David Morrissey is Mark Antony, who brings Rome back under control after the conspirators’ defeat.
With seating wrapped around the action, there will also be 250 promenading tickets at £25 available in advance for each performance. The production designer is Bunny Christie, with costumes by Christina Cunningham, music by Nick Powell, lighting by Bruno Poet and sound by Paul Arditti. The run is from 20 January (opening night Tuesday 30 January) until 15 April 2018. The show will be broadcast on National Theatre Live in March 2018.
April to June 2018 Laurie Sansom to direct the world premiere of Barney Norris’s NIGHTFALL
“Remember the name Barney Norris. He’s a new writer in his twenties, but already outstanding.” The Times
