INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE - In Throes of Increasing Wonder
"Their first love scene in the first episode we did talk a lot about the beats, like what are the emotional beats. We wanted to have a moment where you see them smile at each other. That it’s not just this burst of tortured energy turning into something, but it’s also that these two are really attracted to each other and this is an exciting thing and a promising thing for their relationship. All the promise is there at that moment. We wanted to make sure that that’s what that scene was about." - Jacob Anderson (x)
So, okay, after the assault, Louis couldn’t hunt an animal let loose in his own home. He wasn’t able to feed himself. What if Claudia hadn’t been there to help?* His choices would’ve essentially been to either starve and grow weaker, or let Lestat back in, even though he didn’t want to and wasn’t ready to face him, so that he could have help.
*I know that some folks say that they’d never gotten to that point if Claudia hadn’t been around in the first place, but I don’t believe that erasing her from the equation makes the assault impossible. Their problems - their entire toxic relationship dynamic - started long before she showed up…
Persone scoprendo che il teen drama che guardavano quando avevano 13 anni è pieno di aspetti problematici e non sapendolo gestire adultamente *gestures at the absolute mess of the fandom tag*
its like. i wholeheartedly agree that one of the things iwtv does best is nuance. social power dynamics fundamentally inform interpersonal ones whether we want them to or not. people are not fundamentally good or evil. abuse is cyclical. it is deeply dangerous to turn victims into saints. trauma informs how we behave. its about “are we the sum of our worst moments?” its about asking if people are capable of change! of giving or deserving forgiveness! its about the fundamental humanity of monsters.
HOWEVER. i am also very leery of saying that “all readings of their roles can be validated” since vampire companions are “everything to each other simultaneously.” i agree that they have different forms of power over each other but i think we ought to be wary of saying they are “equal” inequalities bc 1. its incidentally abuser logic 101 💀 2. i think that it actually flattens the depiction of ambiguity. and 3. its just not true. like its not true that lestat’s assertion of control over louis is at odds with him humbling himself groveling eating dirt waiting for him for years. bc the gifts and the groveling are ALSO part of his control. the way his devotion traps him with louis is entirely different than the way louis has been isolated gaslighted and physically coerced into staying. the silence IS cruel but its also reflexive self defense. or u cant really in good faith establish a parallel between claudia calling lestat master and then claudia manipulating lestat in order to murder him. bc claudia manipulating lestat is in direct response to him being her master. violence might be proportional but its not equivalent.
and theres fundamentally something a little off about saying “well theyre both the dad” yes On a literal level they are both the dad. but louis’s human attachment to being the provider (masculine role) is (A) pretty quantitatively different from and (B) consistently thwarted by lestat’s NEED to have all the power in the family which they have arranged in a nuclear configuration. Its not equal in some ways unequal in others its just unequal! personally i dont want to shy away from addressing this! and i dont think its erasing ambiguity to do so.
re: iwtv i haven’t seen it but i am on your side because i hate hate HATE when people are like “well it HAS to be unsubtle because some people NEED that they aren’t ready for nuance yet” and i’m always just like. okay?? try harder then? also i’m under no obligation to like something that’s beneath me. like i’ve gotten this same argument multiple times about the b*rbie movie where people are like “yeah it’s feminism 101 but some people aren’t there yet and they need an introductory primer” okay. maybe that’s their problem :/
okay im gonna be honest when i said that iwtv and squid game are unsubtle and didactic and yet people still grossly misinterpreted them for the sake of their stupid memes i was not complaining about the “unsubtlety” i was complaining about the misinterpretations. these are good shows, with good writing. barbie is a thoroughly mediocre movie and the writing is perhaps its weakest link. im not saying that iwtv is in no way complex or nuanced, im saying that the ideological currents of the narrative are obvious, that the critiques of racism and patriarchy and colonialism and marriage are blatant and should not be so easily misconstrued. but isn’t it ironic that you, too, happened to miss the obvious connotations of my original post?
moments in VC that alter my brain chemistry (in a good way)
I thought was a good idea so thank you to @prouvaireafterdark for tagging me in @msrandonstuff 's request for a list like this!
I have to specify "(in a good way)" because there is so much wtf nonsense in these books, but I will gladly do a separate "(in a bad way)" list if y'all want. These are mostly from the first two books because they're by FAR the best, but there are a couple from the third and from the last three. If you've seen my Loustat moments post, you've seen everything you need to see from the middle books.
I've included page numbers for all these, but they won't apply to every version of the books. Fortunately, I have a Google Drive folder of VC book PDFs that these correspond to linked here
Spoilers, obviously.
Louis' turning in Interview with the Vampire p. 22-24 (romantic, sexy horror at its finest)
THE PROSTITUTE SCENE in IWTV p. 83-94 (an abridged version is in the 1994 movie, but the AMC show replaced it, rather anticlimactically imo, with the tenor scene. I have a breakdown of what makes the OG version so incredible right here)
Claudia's turning in IWTV p. 97-101 (while I understand the reasoning behind the changes in the AMC show, I prefer the book version. Additional Claudia spoilers here)
Louis' confession and slaughter of the priest in IWTV p. 154-156 (still heartbroken that this was storyboarded but cut from the movie, AMC better give it to me)
Claudia's "murder" of Lestat in IWTV p. 143-145 (gaslight gatekeep girlboss)
Louis and Lestat's brief reunion at the end of IWTV p. 340-346 (fucking brutal, iconic though and way gayer than the movie version)
The intro of The Vampire Lestat p. 1-3 (the first page is written, I swear to you, in the style of My Immortal, but I love it)
Lestat's first date with Nicolas as mortals in TVL p. 30-35 (Loustat is everything but human Nickistat is soooo baby)
Lestat's turning in TVL p. 63-66 (big CW for non-con, but a amazingly chilling scene)
Lestat finds the dungeon of Magnus' tower in TVL p. 77-79 (such a great horror moment)
Nicolas' condemnation of Lestat in TVL p. 198-201 (heartbreaking but such a watershed moment)
Lestat's recollections of Louis and Claudia in TVL p. 385-388 (THEY!!!!!!)
LOUSTAT REUNION FR THIS TIME in TVL p. 403-411 (this is the most important part of VC actually. Nothing else matters)
Lestat's rock concert in TVL p. 412-417 (he is so stupid but good for him)
Armand turning Daniel, the interviewer from IWTV, in Queen of the Damned p. 62-65 (the whole chapter this is from, The Devil's Minion, is amazing and one of the most loved parts of VC, so honestly just read it all)
Louis and Lestat visit NOLA in QotD p. 270-273 (this is where you should stop reading. Nothing is gained past this point)
Louis and Lestat express their feelings for real in Prince Lestat p. 508 (this is on my Loustat moments post, but it has to be here too)
Louis lets go of his grief and accepts happiness at the end of PL p. 518-525 (Louis was in Anne Rice character jail for almost forty years but YES YES THE TIGER IS OUT)
Louis and Lestat commit to each other permanently in Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis p. 131-141 (so many incredible Loustat things packed in here. All that makes this book justified in its existence)
Louis and Lestat live happily ever after in Blood Communion p. 282-284 (If it wasn't for this after All That Shit, I would've had to smash my face into concrete)
I think the reason Louis initially didn't want a power boost as a vampire because he might have resorted to hunting other vampires to get out the moral quandary of killing 'innocent' mortals. If he detests his own vampirism, he sure doesn't value it in others. Dude used to have slaves after all. He is not big on vampire company. It eliminates significant competition in the food chain and saves 'lives', a fitting moral high ground in his own hypocritical way. Also the hunger games poll tells me he is going to fly under the radar every time for people underestimating him, that's true crime hunch 101.
I’m...not entirely sure I understand this whole message but I mean yeah, Louis is absolutely game to kill other vampires lmao! I honestly don’t know if it has to even do with any fucked up moral righteousness— I honestly think he threatens other vampires just to uphold his own reputation. After the Paris arson adventures, he’s got a reputation to uphold, especially when he’s living on his own without a companion to protect him. While he is physically weaker than most of his contemporaries, he’s still significantly stronger than fledglings born in the modern era. (Plus let’s not forget that after burning the theatre to the ground, Louis also spent nearly a century learning from Armand, whose modus operandi is to wipe out any young ones in his territory without discrimination).
“That vampire who was Lestat’s latest child accosted me one evening not long after. He begged me to tell him all I knew of the world, to become his companion and his teacher. I remember telling him that what I chiefly knew was that I’d destroy him if I ever saw him again. ‘You see, someone must die every night that I walk, until I’ve the courage to end it,’ I told him. ‘And you’re an admirable choice for that victim, a killer as evil as myself.’” — IWTV
To me, this bit in iwtv always felt more like Louis lashing out and just being a dick because he’s...in severe emotional distress LMAO because see then we get to TVL and this is what Louis says to Lestat:
“They left New Orleans to [Armand]. They say that many of the old ones do that, kill the young ones. They say it of me, but it isn't so. I haunt San Francisco like a ghost. I do not trouble anyone save my unfortunate mortal victims."
I think it’s interesting that Louis, in this context, is considered an “old one” which I guess is kinda the point I’ve been trying to make this whole time:
Louis’ reputation of being a ruthless killer is only amongst younger fledgling vampires, whereas his reputation of being a helpless weakling is held by older vampires and guess what!! They are BOTH wrong :) Louis doesn’t go out of his way to harm others, but if you hurt him or the ones he loves you better watch yourself because he may not be strong or have gifts but he is resourceful and smart and he’ll take you out without hesitation.

after seeing ash’s response to this post i want to talk for a second about the subject of elvis and impersonation vs portrayal.
elvis impersonators have been around almost as long as elvis himself, with the first impersonator being a man by the name of carl “cheesie” nelson from texarkana who, in 1954 who performed his own renditions of “that’s alright, mama” and “blue moon of kentucky,” and even got to perform onstage alongside elvis that same year. since then, elvis impersonators have been a staple of american pop culture—with a notable presence in las vegas specifically—but it’s not exclusive to america. simply put, ash is right; elvis is one of, if not THE most impersonated pop culture icon in american—and rock n’ roll—history.
there are a few notable portrayals of elvis onscreen: elvis (1979) directed by john carpenter (often touted as the best portrayal of elvis), elvis and nixon (2016), more of a comedy film above all else but still one of the more notable portrayals of elvis in recent years, bubba ho-tep (2002) starring bruce campbell as elvis, the elvis miniseries from 2005 starring jonathan rhys meyers (who bears an uncanny resemblance to elvis) and of course the most recent film starring austin butler, just to name a few. this is not a comprehensive list by any means, but are (to me) the most notable attempts at bringing elvis to the small and silver screen respectively. i can’t speak to every portrayal of elvis ever that exists in media (and i haven’t seen elvis and nixon in a very long time) but i can speak to austin butler, kurt russell and jonathan rhys meyer’s portrayals in particular when it comes to just the performance aspect of elvis, which is where immitation vs portrayal really comes into play for me.
JONATHAN RHYS MEYERS
by all accounts and purposes, jonathan rhys meyers was practically tailor made to play elvis presley
i mean honestly.
unfortunately i made the mistake of watching the miniseries after i had already seen austin butler’s performance and it was. not good lmao. i think for the time it was quite good, but it very much comes across as someone trying to imitate elvis versus actually inhabiting him as a person and making him come alive (also as an aside i know we tend to clown on tom hanks for his portrayal of the colonel because of how he sounds but at least he’s not boring lmao. if randy quaid’s version is more accurate then this is really gonna bite me in the ass but my god no one can ever accuse tom hanks of being boring in elvis 2022), particularly when he’s dancing. there was such a fluidity to the way elvis moved and it comes off very disjointed by comparison.
