Defense Secretary Overrides Plea Agreement With 9/11 Defendants

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Friday overrode a plea agreement reached earlier this week for the accused mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and two other defendants, reinstating them as death-penalty cases.

The move comes two days after the military commission at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, announced that the official appointed to oversee the war court, retired Brig. Gen. Susan Escallier, had reached plea deals with Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and two accused accomplices, Walid bin Attash and Mustafa al-Hawsawi, in the attacks.

Letters sent to families of the nearly 3,000 people killed in the al-Qaida attacks said the plea agreement stipulated the three would serve life sentences at most.

Austin wrote in an order released Friday night that “in light of the significance of the decision,” he had decided that the authority to make a decision on accepting the plea agreements was his. He nullified Escallier’s approval.

Some families of the attack’s victims condemned the deal for cutting off any possibility of full trials and possible death penalties. Republicans were quick to fault the Biden administration for the deal, although the White House said after it was announced it had no knowledge of it.

Republican Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas, a member of the Armed Services Committee, earlier Friday had condemned the plea deal on social media as “disgraceful." Cotton said he had introduced legislation that would mandate the 9/11 defendants face trial and the possibility of the death penalty.

Mohammed, whom the U.S. describes as the main plotter of the attack that crashed hijacked passenger planes into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a Pennsylvania field, and the other two defendants had been expected to formally enter their pleas under the deal as soon as next week.

The U.S. military commission overseeing the cases of five defendants in the Sept. 11 attacks has been stuck in pre-trial hearings and other preliminary court action since 2008. The torture that the defendants underwent while in CIA custody has been among the challenges slowing the cases, and left the prospect of full trials and verdicts still uncertain, in part because of the inadmissibility of evidence linked to the torture.

J. Wells Dixon, a staff attorney at the Center for Constitutional Rights who has represented defendants at Guantanamo as well as other detainees there who have been cleared of any wrongdoing, had welcomed the plea bargains as the only feasible way to resolve the long-stalled and legally fraught 9/11 cases.

Dixon accused Austin on Friday of “bowing to political pressure and pushing some victim family members over an emotional cliff" by rescinding the plea deals.

Lawyers for the two sides have been exploring a negotiated resolution to the case for about 1 1/2 years. President Joe Biden blocked an earlier proposed plea bargain in the case last year, when he refused to offer requested presidential guarantees that the men would be spared solitary confinement and provided trauma care for the torture they underwent while in CIA custody.

A fourth Sept. 11 defendant at Guantanamo had been still negotiating on a possible plea agreement.

The military commission last year ruled the fifth defendant mentally unfit to stand trial. A military medical panel cited post-traumatic stress disorder and psychosis, and linked it to torture and solitary confinement in four years in CIA custody before transfer to Guantanamo.

Tomita Kazuhiko. Diseñador industrial y de producto.

Tomita Kazuhiko (1965, Nagasaki, Japón) se describe a sí mismo como un nómada errante entre el Este y el Oeste, y su trayectoria profesional y biográfica no hace más que confirmar esta teoría.

Como diseñador es capaz de construir nuevas marcas o de darles un nuevo giro, al aplicar su experiencia creativa en varios campos, desde el diseño gráfico hasta la arquitectura.

Tomita Kazuhiko estudió diseño industrial en la Universidad de Chiba en Japón (1989).

Posteriormente, en la década de 1990, gracias a una beca de Cassina & British Council, estudió diseño de muebles en el Royal College of Arts de Londres, donde se graduó en 1992.

Éste mismo año (1992) se mudó a la ciudad que es la meca del diseño industrial: Milán.

En 1993 diseñó la línea “Stars” de productos cerámicos en colaboración con Alessandro Mendini y Ettore Sottsass.

También en 1993 fundó el Studio 2.5-Dimensional Design (Milán) -que después se convertiría en Tomitadesign– empezando a presentar sus colecciones en ferias internacionales.

En el año 2000, se convirtió en director de Arte de la compañía COVO, y en este contexto, diseñó también la COVO Shop en la ciudad de Roma.

COVO, una marca con un ADN completamente italiano y raíces internacionales, combina elegancia con simplicidad, tradición y contemporaneidad, y clasicismo con diseño vanguardista.

En 2001 creó la colección de artículos de mesa “Rim” para Rörstrand, empresa de porcelana en Kungsholmen (Estocolmo, Suecia), junto con Vico Magistretti.<

Tomita Kazuhiko fue nombrado director de Arte de NUSSHA París en 2004, y desde entonces ha trabajado con varios fabricantes más, incluida por ejemplo, la empresa italiana Moroso.

  Las creaciones de Tomita Kazuhiko son lúdicas, pero a la vez prácticas.

Con una mirada cuidadosa y sensible que combina armoniosamente forma y contenido promueve, sin sacrificar nada a la funcionalidad, la investigación y la experimentación que va desde el uso hábil de los materiales hasta la selección previsora ​​de productores internacionales.

Para Tomita Kazuhiko la reducción a lo que es importante y esencial es una característica del shintoismo japonés, donde según su teoría los objetos inanimados también contienen energía espiritual.

Así por ejemplo, la colección de mesas de sobremesa”UkiYo” (2006-2007) para Moroso, realizadas en resina de poliéster co-moldeada, están decoradas con los patrones utilizados en los kimonos tradicionales e inspirados en Ukiyo, un movimiento cultural japonés del siglo XVIII.

Relacionado con el realismo sintoísta, que establece que nada puede permanecer sin cambios durante mucho tiempo, la filosofía de este movimiento (Ukiyo) vive cada momento al máximo como una forma, curiosamente, de alcanzar la vida eterna.

Desde esta perspectiva, la floración se convierte en el período anual más alegre y radiante, donde se extiende por todas partes la máxima cantidad de energía. Sin embargo, nadie puede decir si la flor recién florecida seguirá viva un momento después.

Las tapas o sobres de estas mesitas -con finísimas patas de acero tubular acabado en polvo RAL 3003 rojo brillante- se pueden invertir y utilizar como bandejas.

Su trabajo se ha exhibido a nivel mundial, en ciudades como Tokio (exposición individual “2.5-Dimensional Design“, Ozone Gallery, 1999); en Jerusalén (“FUSION: Arquitectura + Diseño en Japón“, 2002, Museo de Israel); Nueva York (Exposición “COVO”, 2002, galería Totem SOHO) o en Milán (“RE-FUSION”, 2003).

También sus productos han entrado en los museos para quedarse, como los productos que diseñó para la marca Essential, que se han integrado en la colección permanente del Museo de Arte Moderno de Nueva York.

Tomita Kazuhiko es profesor visitante en Diseño Industrial en la Universidad de Roma.

Y ha ganado numerosos premios internacionales a lo largo de su carrera, como por ejemplo el primer premio en el concurso “El futuro arquitectónico del acero inoxidable” (Londres, 1991) por Sir Noman Foster.

Back to the Future:

A hecking classic, a movie that shaped so many lives and perhaps shaped the future of movies. It was a big inspirations in many movies after it was released. It first viewed in 1985 and became extremely popular. Now at least once a year the movies will rescreen it ^-^.

Plot summary:

In 1985, Marty McFly is a typical teenager living in Hill Valley, California. At home, Marty's cowardly father George is bullied by his supervisor, Biff Tannen. His mother Lorraine is an overweight, depressed alcoholic, and his older siblings are professional and social failures. An aspiring musician, Marty's band is rejected for a music contest. He confides in his girlfriend Jennifer Parker about fears of becoming like his parents, despite his ambitions.

That night, Marty meets his eccentric scientist friend Emmett "Doc" Brown in the Twin Pines mall parking lot. Doc unveils a time machine built from a modified DeLorean, powered by plutonium he swindled from Libyan terrorists. Doc inputs a destination time of November 5, 1955 – the day he first conceived his time travel invention. The terrorists arrive unexpectedly, opening fire and shooting Doc. Marty flees in the DeLorean, inadvertently activating time travel when he reaches 88 miles per hour (142 km/h).

Arriving in 1955, Marty discovers he has no plutonium to return. While exploring a burgeoning Hill Valley, Marty encounters his teenage father and discovers Biff has been bullying him since high school. George falls into the path of an oncoming car while spying on the teenage Lorraine, and Marty is knocked unconscious while saving him. He wakes to find himself tended to by Lorraine, who becomes infatuated with him. Marty tracks down a younger Doc and convinces him he is from the future. Doc explains the only source available in 1955 capable of generating the required 1.21 gigawatts of power for time travel is a lightning bolt. Marty shows Doc a flyer from the future that documents an upcoming lightning strike at the town's courthouse. Marty's siblings begin to fade from a photo he is carrying with him. He and Doc realize Marty's actions are altering the future and jeopardizing their chances to exist; Lorraine was supposed to meet George instead of Marty after the car accident. Early attempts to get his parents acquainted fail, and Lorraine's infatuation with Marty deepens.

Lorraine asks Marty to the school dance. He plots to feign inappropriate advances on Lorraine, allowing George to intervene and "rescue" her. The plan goes awry when Biff's gang interrupts and locks Marty in the trunk of the performing band's car, while Biff forces himself onto Lorraine. George arrives expecting to find Marty, and Biff bullies him into submission. After Biff hurts Lorraine, an enraged George knocks him unconscious. He escorts a grateful Lorraine to the dance. The band frees Marty from their car, but the lead guitarist is injured in the process. Marty takes his place and performs while George and Lorraine share their first kiss. With his future no longer in jeopardy, Marty heads to the courthouse to meet Doc.

Doc discovers a note from Marty warning him about his future and destroys it, worried about the consequences. To save Doc, Marty re-calibrates the DeLorean to return ten minutes before he left the future. The lightning strikes, sending Marty back to 1985, but the DeLorean breaks down, forcing Marty to run back to the mall. He arrives as Doc is being shot. While Marty grieves at his side, Doc sits up, revealing he pieced Marty's note back together and wore a bulletproof vest. He takes Marty home and departs to the future in the DeLorean.

Marty wakes the next morning to discover his father is now a successful, confident author, his mother is fit and happy, his siblings are successful, and Biff is a servile valet in George's employ. As Marty reunites with Jennifer, Doc suddenly reappears in the DeLorean, insisting they return with him to the future to save their children from terrible fates.[

Singer Huey Lewis cameos as a judge for the Battle of the Bands contest.[5][6] Richard L. Duran and Jeff O'Haco portray the Libyan terrorists.[7]

The 1955-era cast includes George DiCenzo and Frances Lee McCain as, respectively, Lorraine's parents Sam and Stella Baines,[4] and Jason Hervey as Lorraine's younger brother Milton. Biff's gang includes Jeffrey Jay Cohen as Skinhead, Casey Siemaszko as 3-D, and Billy Zane as Match. Norman Alden plays the cafe owner Lou and Donald Fullilove appears as his employee (and future mayor) Goldie Wilson. Harry Waters Jr. portrays Chuck Berry's cousin Marvin Berry, Will Hare appears as Pa Peabody, and Courtney Gains portrays Dixon, the youth who interrupts George's and Lorraine's dance.

Pazar gecelerinin vazgeçilmez sinema keyfi olan Parliament Sinema Kulübü, Star 1 ile hayatımıza girip geçen yıllarda Inter Star ve Star TV adlarını alan Uzan Ailesine ait farklı adlardaki aynı kanalda yayın kuşağı olarak sürdürülmüştü. 1992 yılında Sinema Kulübü adıyla yayına başlayan yayın kuşağına Parliament'in isim sponsoru olmasıyla adını hafızalara kazımış ve 90'lı yılların unutulmazları arasına girmişti. Parliament Sinema Kulübü, 1997 yılında tütün mamülü reklamı yapıldığı gerekçesiyle RTÜK kararıyla yayından kaldırılınca efsanenin adı Sinema Gecesi olarak değiştirilip yayın sürdürülmüştü... Pazar gecelerinin vazgeçilmesi olan ve 7'den 70'e herkes için büyük keyif olan Parliament Sinema Kulübü ilk olarak 2 Şubat 1992'de Batman filmini yayınlamıştı...
