First Tournament in Over a Year

No One Wants to Talk About Competitive Pinball

Since March of 2020, the amount of pinball I’ve been able to play has been pretty limited. There’s been virtual pinball league, organized by Zen Zochniak, a Saturday night tradition that’s always been lovely for silliness with friends but wow, I don’t like videogame pinball. I have some lovely people in my life who have a game or two at their homes who have graciously had me over while we also kept our quarantine bubble small. Last fall when limited indoor dining opened in NYC, I was able to visit Jackbar once or twice--but even with all the precautions I was still a little uncomfortable.

Things took a major jump for the better about a month ago, early April 2021, when my partner Lauren purchased a new machine (a Black Knight Sword of Rage LE) that I am babysitting in my Manhattan apartment (her apartment being already maxed out with two machines). It’s incredible to have daily pinball again! Watch out for random streams at twitch.tv/hipsmart (in addition to BKSOR, I’ll be taking my rig to Lauren’s tomorrow for Elvira’s House of Horrors and Aerosmith, and hopefully some other spots soon).

This past weekend, having patiently waited two weeks after my second vaccination, I visited Solid State bar in Queens on Saturday afternoon for an honest-to-josh tournament.

I have definitely enjoyed playing some IFPA Challenge Rankings matches in the past year (https://www.ifpapinball.com/icr/). I think it’s an acceptable substitute for WPPRs in a pandemic. It’s more fun to compete! Until WPPRs and IFPA-sanctioned events return, in fact, I’m mostly uninterested in tournaments. I definitely don’t want to pay an entrance fee if I’m not going to get (however few) WPPRs out of it.

So why, then, the trip to Solid State? Well, it was the first time I felt actually comfortable to play location pinball in over a year. I know the work that this venue has put in to ventilating and sanitizing their space. Oh, and the tournament was free to enter! So it was really just playing location pinball with a few of my friends and tracking how it went. Perfect. Nine people competed, and five of us represented my team, the New York City Flipper Sport Association (Freddie won, go figure).

I can’t wait for WPPRs to return, and I hope they don’t come back any sooner than is safe. I’m just in this for the imaginary magic pinball points--if all tournaments were free I’d be just dandy!

Rey and Finn: *Confuse shrug at one another* (Have no idea what Rock Opera is)

Ben: Rule #2 - *Motions to the controls between him and Rey* Nobody touches the red button ...

Rey: *turns to look at everyone seriously* Nobody EVER touch the red button!

Everyone: *Suspicious of what Ben and Rey modified but agrees with a puzzled nod*

Ben: And most importantly ... Rule #3 *Pause* There's no Jerkin it on my ship!

Finn: *Laughs*

Rose: Wha?

Everyone: *Turns to look at Poe*

Poe: *Exasperated* Fine!

Finn and Rey: *Laughes*

Rose: *Makes chortle in half disgust*

Ben: *Sensing Poe's dirty look* don't roll your eyes at me Admiral Jackbar!
