5 Books I Listened To During (the first) Lockdown
Most days when I’m working from home I stick on the radio and let the team at Original 106 natter away in the background without paying too much attention. Some days though, I just felt like a change and that’s when Audible came to the rescue (because I’m utterly useless at deciding what kind of music I want to listen to and Alexa makes some truly questionable choices. I also realised that I…

“At 16 years old, Australian explorer Jade Hameister is the youngest person to ever complete the polar hat-trick by reaching the North and South Poles and crossing Greenland, but even she has to deal with loudmouth critics who have opined that her place is in the kitchen.”
[AAARGGHH.

BACK TO OUR STORY -
“In 2016, after the then-14-year-old become the youngest person to ski to the North Pole from outside the last degree of latitude (a distance of about 60 miles), she gave a TEDx talk in Melbourne in which she encouraged young women to embrace an adventurous mindset, and to resist societal pressures that discourage them from their ambitions. Male YouTube commenters took offense to Hameister’s message, as users flooded the page with the phrase, “Make me a sandwich,” an internet meme that mocks women for having ambitions aside from making food for a man.
[I literally can’t even make it through this I’m so annoyed.]

“After Hameister’s recent record-setting descent to the South Pole, the teenager offered a biting response to her critics with a Facebook post in which she posed alongside the Ceremonial South Pole flags while carrying a sandwich on a plate.
“I skied back to the Pole again … to take this photo for all those men who commented ‘Make me a sandwich’ on my TEDX Talk,” she wrote. “I made you a sandwich (ham & cheese), now ski 37 days and 600km to the South Pole and you can eat it xx.”

We spent this morning cleaning out our sleds to be ready to fly out to Union Glacier tomorrow morning (depending on weather). Then we skied over to the Ceremonial South Pole (probably the Pole that everyone knows as the only South Pole - the barbers Pole with the flags) and the actual Geographic South Pole (which moves around 10m each year), which is marked separately. In the afternoon we were given a tour of the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. It is seriously as close to what a Base on another planet would be like than anything else on the planet - a mini-town based around the scientific work of the National Science Foundation.
Tonight (it never gets dark this time of year) I skied back to the Pole again... to take this photo for all those men who commented “Make me a sandwich” on my TEDX Talk. I made you a sandwich (ham & cheese), now ski 37 days and 600km to the South Pole and you can eat it xx

A woman's place is at the South Pole
Why is this 16-year-old girl holding a ham & cheese sandwich at the South Pole?
At 14, Jade Hameister became the youngest person to ski to the North Pole from outside the last degree of latitude. After she gave a talk about the journey at TEDx Melbourne, a video of the talk was posted online and the comments -- like "Make me a sandwich" -- rolled in from men presumably upset that Hameister should be preparing for a life of cooking & cleaning rather than polar exploration. After skiing across Greenland and then to the South Pole, Hameister had a message (and some lunch) for those men:
Tonight (it never gets dark this time of year) I skied back to the Pole again... to take this photo for all those men who commented "Make me a sandwich" on my TEDX Talk. I made you a sandwich (ham & cheese), now ski 37 days and 600km to the South Pole and you can eat it xx
How's that Hameister & cheese sandwich taste, fellows? *bicep flex emoji* *dancing woman emoji*

Jade Hameister is not your average high-schooler. At 16, the Melbourne native is the youngest person to accomplish what’s known as the polar hat trick: reaching both the North and South Poles and crossing Greenland. She believes in the power of young women and makes no bones about it. After her North Pole expedition, she gave a TEDx talk in Melbourne to inspire young women to ignore the social roles imposed by others and strive for their own goals. Among the admiring comments to the YouTube video, there were the inevitable ignorant young men threatened by competent females, who dropped the chauvinist cliche, “Make me a sandwich.” So… On her next grand outing, to Antarctica, Hameister (apt name, as you’ll see) decided to oblige. At camp, she prepared a ham and cheese sandwich in her tent and skied a klick to the pole. Where she most thoroughly served her trolls.

Sexist Trolls Told This Record-Breaking Teen Skier to “Make Me a Sandwich”-So She Fired Back
Jade Hameister recently made history-and a mean ham and cheese sandwich.
Earlier this month, the 16-year-old Australian skier took a record-breaking trip to the South Pole and posted what could very well be the most epic clap back of all time. It all started in 2016, when Hameister did a TEDx Talk in which she shared her story about becoming the youngest person to ski to the North Pole from anywhere outside the last degree.
Her talk attracted thousands of views-and also several sexist and offensive comments from men asking her to "make them a sandwich," as Hameister put it.
Fast forward to January 2018. After an impressive 37-day, 370-mile journey to the South Pole, she posted a triumphant selfie, along with a message for her TEDx Talk trolls.
“Tonight I skied back to the Pole again,” Hameister shared in a Facebook post. “...to take this photo for all those men who commented 'Make me a sandwich' on my TEDX Talk. I made you a sandwich (ham & cheese), now ski 37 days and 600km to the South Pole and you can eat it xx.”

In the days following, Hameister received support from well-wishers all over the world, and her ham and cheese clap back has gone viral. With her latest expedition, she's achieved the “Polar Hat Trick,” a feat that involves covering the North Pole, Greenland, and the South Pole on skis.
“Whilst these adventures were never about breaking records to me, over time I have learnt of the few I have broken along the way,” she wrote on one Instagram post.
Hmm, something tells us that none of those trolls have anywhere near the ski skills needed to come to the South Pole and take Hameister up on her sandwich offer.
