Himba | Garden of Worlds by Jahbu

The Himba (singular: OmuHimba, plural: OvaHimba) are an indigenous people with an estimated population of about 50,000 people[1] living in northern Namibia, in the Kunene Region (formerly Kaokoland) and on the other side of the Kunene River in southern Angola.[1] There are also a few groups left of the OvaTwa, who are also OvaHimba, but are hunter-gatherers. Culturally distinguishable from the Herero people, the OvaHimba are a semi-nomadic, pastoralist people and speak OtjiHimba, a variety of Herero, which belongs to the Bantu family within Niger–Congo.[1] The OvaHimba are semi-nomadic as they have base homesteads where crops are cultivated, but may have to move within the year depending on rainfall and where there is access to water.

What a month/year. This is, and feels like a massive paradigm shift... there will be no return to 'normal' - though at the same time, our definition of 'normal' was anything but.

There will of course be things missed, things that were taken for granted, assumed to always be there.. just waiting for me to finally find the time.. but now, everything has changed.

The thing that I find most disappointing however, is the inept and callous leadership that seems completely incapable of seeing beyond their own greed and self-interest.. once hidden behind a polished facade, their outright obsession with sustaining an economic structure that was always dehumanizing to begin with, but now their clear willingness to jeopardize human life is talked about openly.

It saddens me, and frankly boggles my mind how we ever allowed this situation to occur in the first place. My hope here is that it leads others to a greater understanding of how the system and status quo operates; the rampant inequality and classism, an economy that is propped up by unsustainable schemes, but still has an endless supply of money for itself, but never for things like solving homelessness, poverty, providing universal healthcare, free college, green technologies, and a million other things that a society based on care, concern, and value for human life would provide to its citizens.

My sincere wish is that we don’t settle for a return to 'normal' - and we hold ourselves, each other, and leadership accountable for the shared reality we create as we begin to shape a different future.. and hopefully something better, something we can look back on proudly, of the work we did, when it really mattered.

Whether we're ready or not - we're all going to have to make changes and adjustments, both individually and collectively. Nothing about this is easy, especially in the face of uncertainty, fear, and seemingly insurmountable obstacles. But despite that, we should strive to be a source of strength for those who are struggling right now. To provide comfort and assistance wherever it is needed, and to never lose sight of the impact we can have on other people.

We’ve all lived our share of struggle, of being tested, and this is one more we must endure - only on a grand scale this time. Stay safe - take care of each other. Much L 🌸 V E
