It won’t compete with other commercial releases - push the faders up!” Pokey plays the conservative angle, “but Gumby, then the listener’s ears will tire and they’ll loose interest. Here are a few clips (audio straight from my camera here) while recording the Monta Vista High School Orchestra in March 2022. Director John Gilchrist beautifully conducted the orchestra on two pieces - “Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis” by Ralph Vaughan Williams and “Movement 2” from Dmitri Schostakovich’s Chamber Symphony. These two songs helped the orchestra capture a performance spot at The Midwest Clinic (International Band and Orchestra Conference) in Chicago, IL in December 2022. The group is one of only a handful of high school groups selected to perform from across the US. Congrats! It was a pleasure working with a group and I used a total of 8 mic to record the performance. There were roughly 36 string players. A little tube mic shootout for your #MicMonday !! Here's a side by side comparison of local LA boutique mic manufacturer @monheimmics and their Créme mic utilizing a 12AT7 tube, next to a 1990's USA made @cadaudio VX2 which uses both a 12AX7 and 12AU7 tubes. Both mics went through API 512c preamps (using identical gain/same performance), with conversion via a Lynx Aurora. No other processing was applied. Volume was raised in Pro Tools, leaving enough headroom so the dynamics aren't touched. Happy #MicMonday !!! Here’s 3 tube mics all recorded at the same time - a @neumann.berlin M49 replica made by @cuebus, a @cadaudio VX2, and a vintage Lomo 19a9 (circa 1961) from Russia. These are all center terminated large diaphragm tube mics so their characteristics will be somewhat similar - larger than life sounding with a slightly forward midrange and smooth high frequencies. The m49 and CAD went through an @atlasproaudio Juggernaut preamp with nickel input and output transformers, with the impedance set to 1200ohms.
