Day 596 in the studio - watch the unabridged version on my Facebook page. Please give me a 'like' when you're there. This is a quick run through of how I've been approaching my new record. I set out not wanting to play to a click, but rather a grove that was reliable. In steps in an analog Roland tr606 drum machine, circa '82. I've using it a lot to drive my acoustic performances, and I believe it's helping! Inevitably the 606 will work it's way onto the record, though I am also planning on having acoustic drums augment these sounds. I'm hoping this will make for a very interesting piece of music, at least I will be learning lots as I go. The classic dbx 165! @dbx_pro 🔥 • This is one of my favorite compressors. It has one of the most colorful tones in the rack. It has an ‘overeasy’ button which is reminiscent of the compression character of its more common little siblings, (dbx160x, a, VU) but it also has attack, release, and ratio knobs, making it useful on many more sources compared to the other versions. • The aspect that makes it so useful is the harmonic distortion it introduces on sounds that have a lot of bass frequency information, or anything with with large rms (average power). Using the attack and release knobs you can tweak the amount and tone of the applied distortion, all while squashing the sound in a way only a dbx can (squishy!) 🔥 The fast attack and fast release times are the most aggressive sounding, while the slower settings retain the integrity of the original sound (albeit with a tasty helping of gain reduction). There is also a 165a version which includes a hard stop limiter knob/threshold - I have yet to try this version but have read that it has another level of harmonic distortion.
