Fin dalle primissime pagine, questo libro ti porta fuori dal tempo, in una landa che sembra raggiungibile soltanto se è approcciata con l'animo innocente e curioso di un fanciullo. Infatti il libro può essere capito soltanto se si cerca di contattare un pò il bambino che c'è dentro ognuno di noi. Questa terra remota e tuttavia vicina è popolata da dèi ed esseri fatati, che vivono tutti nel seno della natura sotto l'ala protettiva del cielo. Ci sono villaggi, ma hanno la stessa atmosfera di Rothenburg ob der Tauber che esce dalle nebbie all'imbrunire. Succedono eventi meravigliosi, della cui realtà non si dubita neppure per un istante. Tutto sembra naturale e addirittura quotidiano. Oltre ad essere una fiaba per piccini e per adulti, è però un romanzo di notevole profondità. Parla con simboli ed allegorie, che possono essere penetrati con l'intuizione. Parla di come l'uomo possa raggiungere un equilibrio tra le sue parti razionali, emotive e fisiche, fin quando esse cessano di essere parti e diventano un tutt'uno, fin quando l'uomo stesso non si percepisce più come isolato ma inizia a percepire la sua unità profonda col tutto. E' un viaggio iniziatico, che vari personaggi stanno facendo, ognuno alla maniera che gli è necessaria.
