The Town Will Never Be The Same
Mobile sports betting in NY State finally legal, but who benefits from the market share?
Tumblr media
It was getting towards the end of my shift when suddenly, I got an alert on my phone from Bleecher Reports. The alert flashed, “GAME ON! NEW YORK LEGALIZES MOBILE SPORTS BETTING”. My co-workers, all of whom are serious sports fans and fantasy sports aficionados, received similar alerts as well, from ESPN to CBS Sports to Yahoo News and Barstool Sports. Mobile or online sports bets can be placed in New York beginning Saturday morning, Jan. 8th, 2022, the New York state Gaming Commission announced.
That means bettors could place wagers for the last week of regular season games for the National Football League and certainly for the upcoming playoffs and Super Bowl, the biggest American sporting event.
The Gaming Commission said four licensed Mobile Sports Wagering Apps, Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings, FanDuel, and Rush Street Interactive, have been approved to accept sports bets after 9 a.m. on Saturday, January 8th. The office went wild, with grown men being just as giddy as a room full of women whose lifelong friend just broke the news that they’re getting married. Everybody was already busy, drafting up plans for parlays, texting friends, relatives to get their money up and downloading betting apps to their phones. I swear I thought I was in the movie Casino, where Ace Rothstein came in and took over running the Tangiers Casino for the midwest mafia bosses, who could only go as far west as Kansas City, Missouri before the feds put them under surveillance for being too close to Las Vegas.
Who Benefits?
Tumblr media
I couldn’t help but think the entire time, who really benefits from this sudden but exciting news? Is it the big power corporations, wanting to reinvent the wheel with online gambling or people like my Uncles and cousins who can finally legitimize their sports books? Either way, this is a win, not only for local and state economies, but for the little guy. Even then, it’s wise to proceed with caution.
The downside? While it may water down organized crime on a low level, the other issue now is that any moron who thinks he (or she) is a mathematical genius or a “computer genius” that can hack a mobile app, will try to out work or break the system. Again, I reference the movie Casino, where it clearly didn’t work out well for any gambling cheats that thought they had the system beat. The only difference now is the punishment will be more severe than getting your hand smashed with a hammer after Ace Rothstein & his goons catch you doing wrong. Now, depending on the terms of certain sports betting apps, your biggest punishment will be from the IRS.
The other concern is, if the little guy, meaning bookies like my Uncles and cousins, can stand a chance against the big corporations now legitimizing what many of our gambling-addicted friends and family members have done behind closed doors for decades, without “big brother” watching their transactions, would they be willing to adapt with the times? With changes in technology, statistics and calculations, as well as tax laws for capital gains made, for some, it’ll be hard to adapt, especially if certain levels of debt are involved. Many of the old heads, as I like to call them, spit at the idea of their finances being made public, in case something goes wrong, whether it's making a bad bet or everyone seeing how financially irresponsible that person is. For others, now they can legitimize themselves and won’t have to feel shame at every family gathering when they tell Auntie or Grandma that they were able to cover the cost of groceries because of their “Sports Investing” business.
Either way, all sides can benefit from this, Let the money roll, as long as there’s accountability from everyone. As Ace Rothstein said in the opening of the 1995 mafia classic Casino, “The town will never be the same.”

What sort of gift, not just for photography but for life, would you have to have to get pictures like these, I wondered. "Why haven't I seen these pictures before?" I kept saying to myself. "And who the hell is Marion Post Wolcott?"
My friend — historian, educator, and photographer — John Edwin Mason sent me a link to this terrific interview of Marion Post Wolcott that was done for the Smithsonian with a full transcript available. And if you want to hear her speak, there are about 5 minutes of audio, too.
The ICP has a solidly curated collection of her work. The Library of Congress has much more, including her documentation of Belle Glade and Pahokee down in the Florida Everglades.

hi!! i was wondering if you had a list of courtney whitmore comic recs?? because the tv show inspired me to read more about the character and based on stuff you've said, not all of it is great?
hi hello !!! i have a comic recs tag here but it’s really not as comprehensive and linear as i’d like it to be so BEHOLD
ELEANOR’S FULL LINEAR COURTNEY WHITMORE COMIC GUIDE (the dates are more in here for my personal reference while writing this; but internal character chronology differs from actual release chronology; this is just the order that i personally recommend for better comprehension!! i’ve left minor cameos out; you don’t have to read ALL of these, these are just my recommendations that i like; starred issues are bare minimums to her core storyline)
stars & s.t.r.i.p.e. #0-13 [jul 1999-sep 1999]* jsa #1-4 [aug 1999-nov 1999]* stars & s.t.r.i.p.e. #14 [sept 2000]* impulse #61 [jun 2000] (not essential but its just,, so good read it) jsa #6-9 [jan 2000-apr 2000]* young justice: sins of youth #1 [may 2000] sins of youth: starwoman & the jsa jr [may 2000] young justice: sins of youth #2 [may 2000] jsa #11-25 (#11, 13-21)* [jun 2000-aug 2001] starman #80 [aug 2001]* jsa #26-30 (#26, 27, 29)* [sept 2001-jan 2002] green arrow vol. 3 #12 & 13 [march 2002 & may 2002] jsa #31-32, 34-35, 37 (#32)* [feb 2002-aug 2002] jla/jsa: secret files #1 [jan 2003] jla/jsa: virtue & vice [cover date feb 2003] jsa #39-41, 44 (#41)* [oct 2002-mar 2003] jsa: all stars #1, 4, 8 [july 2003-feb 2004] jsa #45-55 (#45-51 pod arc)* (#54, 55)* [apr 2003-feb 2004]  black reign arc (non-essential, but google for reading order if u want) jsa #59-77 [may 2004-nov 2005] jsa: classified #1, 5-7 [sept 2005-mar 2006] jsa #78-80 [dec 2005-feb 2006] JSA #81 [mar 2006] ****** (one comic to sum up courtney!! READ THIS) justice society of america #1-33 (#1-7, #9, #12-15, #23-25, 26**, 29-33)* [feb 2007-jan 2010] jsa vs kobra #1-8 [aug 2009-jan 2010] (kind of happens concurrently alongside the last few issues of 2007′s jsa) justice society of america: 80 page giant [jan 2010] jsa: all-stars #1-18 [feb 2010-feb 2011]* (writers try to pair courtney w albert rothstein tho it’s gross gross awful) batgirl vol. 3 #23 [sept 2011] (team up!) justice society of america #51-54 [jul 2011-oct 2011]
in terms of new-52 stuff, she’s in justice league of america vol. 3 but i only really recommend #8-14. after that she’s in justice league united but i don’t even recommend that. i don’t really regard new-52 as like,,, real lmao it doesn’t exist but if u just want a nice courtney story with actual good writing, justice league of america #8-14 is the way to go
anyway i hope this is helpful !!!! love u thank u for finally making me do this lmao i’ve been wanting to actually write it out for a while

New York Times, June 7, 1919: Indict Arnold Rothstein. Charged with shooting detectives during raid on apartment.
A Grand Jury returned two indictments yesterday against Arnold Rothstein, well known in certain sporting circles, charging him with assault in the first and second degrees by shooting Detectives John J. Walsh and John McLaughlin of Inspector Dominick Henry’s staff on Jan. 19, when they attempted to break into rooms of an apartment at 301 West Fifty-seventh Street. Walsh and McLaughlin, who had been trailing and arresting gamblers, said they suspected that gambling was in progress in the apartment rooms and when denied admission they forced the door, but were driven back by pistol shots.

The pro-Israel group StandWithUs blasted the policy, calling anti-BDS efforts “crucial to ensure American taxpayers are not complicit in the BDS Movement’s discrimination against Israel.”
“Anti-BDS legislation is about ensuring that states will not do business with companies that engage in discrimination on the basis of race, religion, ethnicity, or national origin. Nothing more, nothing less,” said StandWithUs CEO Roz Rothstein.
“It is hypocritical for BDS activists to claim the mantle of free speech, while they themselves frequently try to stop those they disagree with from speaking,” she said in a statement. “We are deeply disappointed that Women’s March Inc. has taken this misleading and divisive stance, which taints an important movement for social justice.”
At the same time, the Women’s Agenda included a reference to Jewish women, who were not mentioned in the group’s original Unity Principles, although they have since been added.
