Readerly Exploration #2: October 10, 2018
Readerly Exploration #2: October 10, 2018
 Miller (2013), Chapter 4, “In October”:
 “Big” take-away: Being able to hear what, how, and why your students are thinking is valuable information for a teacher to have, as well as a skill for students to develop (Miller, 2013, p. 74-75), and can be accomplished through intentionally extracting students’ thoughts through avenues such as planning quality lessons, asking meaningful questions and documenting observations.
 “Nugget” take-away: Teachers should encourage connections that are more than just superficial ones (as she puts it “meaningful” connections). Miller demonstrated a brilliant way of doing this through asking her students about which connections given by their classmates were quality ones, and which ones were not high quality (Miller, 2013, 81-82).
Worthy, et. al. (2015), “What Are the Rest of the Students Doing? Literacy Work Stations in Two First-Grade Classrooms”:
“Big” take-away: The use of guided reading groups and stations in the classroom seem to be inefficient when it comes to helping students progress in literacy skills. However, there are alternatives available that teachers should be willing to consider when contemplating what methods and modes of instruction will most benefit their students when teaching guided reading.
“Nugget”: The readers who struggled more with reading had a 30-60 minute period where they were unproductive in their work (Worthy et. al, 2015, p. 183).
I did some research on Jo Worthy prior to reading “What Are the Rest of the Students Doing? Literacy Work Stations in Two First-Grade Classrooms” (she is one of the authors of the article). This was beneficial because I found something interesting that stood out to me about her. She had written on her biography page on the University of Texas at Austin website that she had interests in researching and teaching “alternatives to ability grouping” (Worthy, n.d.). I am interested in this content because last year in my educational psychology class, we talked about group work, but were not given an answer as to what the best practice is for establishing groups (i.e. there is no one formula to how to best arrange groups). This left me wandering how I could actually best arrange groups. Though this article did not focus very much on this aspect of her research, it may have honed my focus towards the points about guided reading groups, in particular, the way that students who struggle more with reading tend to not get much out of these groups. This statement by the author left me wandering if there would be a better way to form groups for guided reading rather than merely by skill level. Would the work ethic of the stronger students in the group, as well as their ability to understand directions, be beneficial to the students who tended to struggle more? Would students in mixed groups be more effective across the board than groups that were formed based on skill level? These are interesting thoughts, and has given me a potential topic to research further in my inquiry project. Choosing this exploration may have given me a springboard as to where to start looking for articles about how to form groups that will best promote and grow literacy skills in the classroom (because I now know an author who has an interest in this topic).

#Jan2015 Red Rocks is a sacred place to me. When there are no shows planned, you can enter the park for free. There are no words to describe this place. Three giant rocks forming a natural amphitheater. The view, like the altitude, took my breath away. I plan on coming back when the pandemic is all over. #music #travel #Colorado #Morrison (at Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre) https://www.instagram.com/p/CKascysndJX/?igshid=1pq4ml9wf9fd2

Masterpost: Index
Now that it’s no longer possible to experience OTAM as a “dose a day” math fix, I figured I’d try to get around to making a somewhat more accessible organizational scheme. This post is obviously something of a hack, but it was good enough for printed books for hundreds of years it can be good enough for little old OTAM. I’ve split post this into two parts:
First comes a list of significant tags. This means reasonably small collections of posts but contain a high density of the most interesting posts.
And second, underneath a readmore, comes a list of posts (or drafted posts) which are significant in their own right but cannot be easily found from the tags. [The eight posts in this list marked with stars and italics are, in my opinion, the absolute highlights of this blog.]

It looks you three lead the pack by a longshot; I had some ideas but ultimately I couldn’t find anyone doing better than Maria Gillespie who has 123 45 with the last two being a little bit iffy. But if you don’t count that then it looks like it’s just lots of people tied at three posts

Bitcoin Facing a Wall of Resistance, Bears Could Return
The recent rally from mid-December’s bottom has been a positive sign for Bitcoin and its brethren but cryptocurrencies may not be out of the woods yet. According to a prominent technical analyst Bitcoin is facing a ‘titanium level of resistance’ that could spell further losses if not broken soon.
‘Titanium level thickness cluster of resistance’
That does not read well for Bitcoin traders and investors, many of which were hoping that the ice and snow from the crypto winter could slowly be starting to melt. Bitcoin has recovered 25% since its 2018 low of just below $3,200 on December 15. Currently trading at $4,000 it has been up-trending since last year’s darkest day for crypto markets.
According to prominent market analyst Murad Mahmudov BTC is facing a wall of resistance at this level and is more likely to fall again the longer it stays here, failing to break through;
1/ Titanium level thickness cluster of resistance here. The longer we stay here the more I’d be inclined to look for shorts.
If we *do* break it though, $4800, at the very least, is in play. pic.twitter.com/GRxkD7ZzmE

(@MustStopMurad) January 7, 2019
Using a range of technical indicators including SMAs, EMAs, Bollinger Bands, Ichimoku Clouds, and Gaussian trendlines he has constructed a chart displaying a snapshot of the current market conditions. They do not look particularly promising for Bitcoin which has a lot of resistance to overcome at this price level.
He adds that the network value to transactions ratio which measures the dollar value of Bitcoin transaction activity relative to network value is also looking bearish;
“NVT going higher does not inspire confidence right now. Chain usage has gone down, while the price has gone up. The graph below hasn’t updated for yesterday’s jump in price yet either. We are getting increasingly overvalued overall, the bear market could be prolonged even more,” before adding “For what it’s worth, the Bitcoin Network Momentum has not yet reached the level that it has during the Jan2015 bottom.”
Ethereum Facing Similar Circumstances
Murad paints a similar picture for Ethereum which has shown bearish signals over several timeframes;
“Bearish Wedge broken down on almost all timeframes … Bearish regular RSI divergence has been seen on several timeframes for several days now… Bearish OBV divergence on several timeframes,”
Ethereum has almost doubled in price since its bottom on December 15 and while the upcoming Constantinople hard fork could be driving its recovery, further losses could be inevitable.
This particular analyst, who has got it right on a number of previous occasions, still thinks a lower low is about to come and the crypto winter is far from over;
“All in all, not only do I believe that the bottom is not in yet, I increasingly believe that this bear market can last longer than most expect. This is definitely one of the ways that the market could “surprise” us.”
