Landscape with Peasants, Jan Brueghel the Elder, c. 1604, Minneapolis Institute of Art: Paintings
Landscape panorama with figures. Jan Brueghel the Elder was the son of Pieter Bruegel the Elder and the father of Jan Breughel the Younger—all prolific and talented landscape painters, each with his own particular skill and legacy. Jan Brueghel the Elder earned the name “Velvet Brueghel” for adroitly painting rich and delicate textures. Here, the lush landscape is illuminated by a brilliant sun, and the trees, city, and hills in the background are a hazy blue, creating a sense of distance and depth within the scene. Size: 14 1/8 x 22 3/8 in. (35.9 x 56.8 cm) Medium: Oil on hardwood

TOUCH ME NOT: in a world of social distancing somehow the words uttered by Christ to Mary Magdalen, in the Gospel of St John seem more poignant than ever. According to Gospel, after she and Mary had gone to the tomb and found it bare, she mistook him for a gardener. He uttered the words ‘touch me not, for I am not yet descended to the father’. In Art History, scenes of the Resurrection are quite rare, but the scene known as ‘Noli me tangere’ has still been depicted by a range of artists, from Duccio and Giotto onwards. Each has created works which spoke to their own times, not least Graham Sutherland (first pic) in the @pallanthousegallery collection. This was painted in 1961 for the Chapel of St Magdalen in @chicathedral and conveyed in an entirely modern style, bright complementary colours of green and flame-orange: which mean it can be seen all the way down the south aisle of the Cathedral. The setting was probably based on Sutherland’s garden in the South of France and the staircase device conveys the notion of ascension. In the version in the cathedral (pic 10) it is more literal and Christ wears a gardener’s hat. In order here are 2) Giotto 3) Duccio 4) Fra Angelico 5) Fra Bartolomeo 6)Titian 7)Tintoretto 8) Correggio 9) Jan Bruegel the Elder. Both Pallant House Gallery and the Cathedral may be closed, and indeed all the other museums with these works, but these works remain as poignant and thought-provoking as ever.
