WIP Wednesday: Spidey Jonathan fic

Their dining room is decked out in streamers for Will’s birthday dinner. He wonders if his little brother picked Mario & Sonic or if they were the cheapest decorations in the store. It looks like dinner might have once been pot roast but is mostly slightly burnt meat and vegetables now with soupy-looking mashed potatoes. He should’ve just convinced Argyle to bring over pizza. Max and Lucas sit on either side of Will leaving Jonathan an empty chair on the other side of the table. Jonathan isn’t going to call his brother’s sixteenth birthday but well it’s not exactly a blowout bash. He looks over to Will who’s preoccupied shredding a carrot and immediately feels guilty that his party is so … lame. 

“Hey Will” he starts, catching his attention “You wanna go to the Mishkin on friday night? They have this exhibit on psychedelic art and-” 

“I can’t” Will says 

Jonathan is a bit taken aback by the outright refusal. 

“Friday is my art show remember?” Will explains 

No, he did not remember. Between school, work, and superheroics he barely remembered that today is his birthday. 

“Oh right”

“You are still coming right?” Will questions 

“Right yea of course I am” Jonathan promises 

“Speaking of, Argyle couldn’t make it tonight?” his mom asks suddenly 

He’s not sure what one has to do with the other but their connected to his mom’s thought process he supposes. 

“Uh no he had to work he’s picking me up later” Jonathan explains 

“Right” she acknowledges 

The table goes quiet again with everyone politely picking at their plates, maybe they could all convince his mom that everyone just really wanted cake. Max is the only one who’s stopped the charade of eating and picked up her phone to look through. Out of the corner of his eye, he notices Hopper about to say something about not having phones at the table. 

“Woah Spiderman stopped a robbery down the block!” Max exclaims before Hopper can start his lecture. 

“What let me see” Will insists scoohing closer to Max

He sees it happen before it does, but in his rush Will tips over his Coke and it would’ve gone all over the table if Jonathan hadn’t caught it so quickly. His mom gives him a look and mouths nice while Will apologizes he shrugs it off and Will’s attention is once again taken up by Spiderman. 

“That is so cool” 

“It’s just some guy who can stick to walls, what Jonathan just did now that’s cool” Lucas argues 

“Oh come on like you wouldn’t want his powers” Max insists 

“He’s just a guy” Lucas scoffs

“He’s Spiderman!” Max 

Lucas rolls his eyes and ignores her going back to his dinner 

“Whatever Will thinks he’s cool” Max goads 

“Because he is” Will grins 

Honestly it's embarrassing listening to himself take down that thief from the phone speaker.

“He’s a menace is what he is” Hopper grumbles 

“A menace seriously?” Will sasses  

“You sound like that crazy guy” Max laughs 

“What crazy guy?” he asks 

“You know the one who’s trying to figure out who Spiderman is?” Lucas explains like it’s obvious

“Yea, the one with the corkboard” Max elaborates pantomiming 

“Is Spiderman a real man or is he 1000 spiders in a man suit” Will impersonates causing Max and Lucas to erupt into laughter. 

But he has no clue what the three of them are talking about.

For your spidey au, I’m definitely picturing Nancy going full on pepe silvia meme in front of Jonathan and he has to pretend like he’s not the subject of her insanely carefully researched investigation.

Here's an opening paragraph to tie you over anon!

Jonathan Byers is running late. He doesn’t mean to be and he was on time. He managed to get out of work early to pick up a record from the store and was on his way home. But then Steve insisted they had to go see some movie and he spent the better part of a half hour trying to get out of that. And he still would’ve been on time if the subway hadn’t stopped. Ok so maybe that was less of an issue for him than it would be for someone else. A sneak out of the emergency exit and he was back on his way to Brooklyn. Swinging through tunnels isn’t ideal but it beats the lecture he’ll get if he shows up late to family dinner. He quickly changes back into his sweater to make his exit at fiftieth street. His phone buzzes as he jogs up the stairs, he’s surprised when it’s his mom asking for him to pick up candles instead of demanding to know where he is. He pops into a nearby store to pick up the candles and a card for his present. Instead, he finds poor old Mr. Katz being held up, so much for being on time for dinner.

An INCREDIBLY late WIP Wednesday

Jonathan shouldn't follow Nancy, it's wrong, weird and he’s pretty sure it’s criminal. He keeps trying to justify it, that he's just going to be helpful in case she runs into any trouble. But he knows that if she catches him, he’ll be in the wrong here. Then again, that would require him to catch her because as it turns out Nancy is very fast. He only left the school about five minutes after she did and he almost lost her already. Admittedly, it’s difficult in the rain but the bigger part of that is his own fault for not suiting up. But he figures it’s better for him to get caught by in her plain clothes than for Spiderman to get caught. Nancy nearly slips off the curb in the rain and he holds himself back from rushing to help her. To her credit, her near fall doesn’t affect her determination in the slightest she continues along her walk like nothing’s happened. It’s admirable, she’s admirable and he’s already in too deep. The signal changes just as he reaches the curb and he mumbles out a curse under his breath. He feels a sudden buzz from his pocket and takes his phone out to check who it is. He doesn’t recognize the number so he declines. But then they call again, and again and again. The fifth time he finally caves and swipes up. 

“What?” he spits into the phone.

“Jeez Byers can’t even say hello" Steve nags

“Steve?” he guesses, shifting his phone 

“The one and only" he quips

“Sorry” he mumbles 

“You owe me big time” Steve taunts 

“For what?” he demands back

“The girl Natalie or whatever” Steve clarifies

“Nancy” he corrects, just as she crosses another street. 

“Yea that’s what I said so anyways I’m thinking as payback you come to this boring charity thing I have to go to tomorrow.” Steve informs

“Since when do you go to charity events?” he scoffs

“Hey I went to all of your birthday parties growing up" Steve jokes 

“I really don’t have time for this" he snarks back

“Hey c’mon I’m kidding look you can bring Naomi" he offers 

“Nancy" he corrects again, astounded and a little angry that Steve can’t be bothered to remember her name. 

“Whatever you can bring her and we’ll hang out” he resolves. 

He wonders if this is just some sort of punishment for canceling the Hamptons Spring Break plans this morning. He hadn’t even called he just sent a halfhearted text that he has to work. Then Steve, confusing as ever, told him it was cool and asked him for Argyle’s number. Which he gladly gave, it must be part of some grand plan to get buddy-buddy with his roommate in order to convince him to go. As if their growing distance can be lessened by sharing a couple of joints in Montauk. 

“Why do you want me to go so bad?” he asks, thinking of the last time he actually saw Steve on Halloween. 

“Fel thinks it’ll be good for my image” Steve explains casually, as though he shed any light on the situation. 

“Fel?” Jonathan asks again

“Yea my publicist” he scoffs, like Jonathan’s question was stupid.

“You have a publicist?” he chuckles back in shock. 

“A lot of things can change in six months" Steve says clearing his throat. 

Jonathan wonders if Steve intended on making him feel even worse for everything’s that happened. Or if it’s just a consequence of his own actions. He lets the words linger, before making a decision. But he should know by now that patience is not a virtue Steve has. 

“Look man” Steve starts remorsefully, twisting the knife of guilt in Jonathan’s stomach further.

“I’ll think about it” Jonathan interrupts, he’s the one who should be apologizing not Steve. 

“Great I’ll send your tux in the morning” She exclaims, shifting his mood suddenly 

“My tux! Wait! Steve?”

Jonathan pulls the phone away from his ear but Steve has already hung up. He straightens back up trying to find Nancy’s pink Umbrella in the crowd. He spots her at the intersection looking at her own phone with an incredulous expression that makes him smile fondly. He’s so lost in his infatuation that he accidentally catches up to her at the cross walk waiting for the light. He stalls just a few inches behind her, panicking. As the traffic light turns red a car hits the brakes but swerves on the slippery street onto the sidewalk. And Nancy would’ve gotten hit if he hadn’t perceived the scene seconds before. Instead he’s safely pulled her back from the accident and has his hand gripped around her arm. In the swift rescue she lost grip on her umbrella and it’s now pathetically lying in the gutter, he tries not to think about how she would’ve been there too if he hadn’t followed her. His memory betrays him all the same with a flash of her bent body on Halloween and he shudders. 

“Asshole” she shouts at the driver as they backup onto the street. 

He should let go of her sweater and run off but with his own heart still racing he can’t bring himself to do it. Nancy spins around forcing him to let go prematurely. He didn’t think a person’s eyes could go that wide but she’s surprising as ever. 

“Were you following me?!?” she demands loudly

A small WIP Wednesday For Spidey-Jonathan enjoyers:

It’s a quiet night and Jonathan knows that he shouldn’t think that. He also knows he shouldn’t be lurking on Nancy Wheeler’s instagram, yet here he is. In the six odd months since they met, he never really looked her up. Too overwhelmed with guilt to really entertain the idea. But now, well now it’s different right? He’s helping her solve Barb’s disappearance. So, he figured he should probably learn more about Barb and if Barb’s page just so happened to lead to Nancy’s well that’s not his fault now is it?

Nancy’s an Aquarius, she used to do ballet, she wants to win a Pulitzer, she has a brother that looks Will’s age and a much younger sister. She graduated from Hawkins high where she was valedictorian, she and Barb took a roadtrip over the summer before moving to new york and she’s a Harry Styles fan. That last part was less than ideal but he can work with it. He’s fascinated by just how much you can learn from a person’s social media after a couple of swipes.

Nancy’s last real post is an old photo of her and Barb from Halloween with Barb dressed as a clown and Nancy looking adorable in a bunny costume. They make for an odd pair, and while he’d never tell her that he’s always thought so. Then again, Steve Harrington is his childhood best friend so what room does he have to judge. Still, he didn’t move seven hundred miles away from home to go to college with Steve. He thought that maybe Barb had a reason for leaving but as far as he can tell she had a completely normal albeit boring and awkward adolescence. Maybe she was desperate for change, because he can’t imagine that NYU’s program is all that great but then he’s never grown up in a small town.

He takes a bite of his pretzel and decides to close the app but he swipes wrong and winds up liking Nancy’s old picture.

“Fuck, shit, fuck” he chokes out

He quickly tries to unlike the photo, but then his phone buzzes and Nancy is calling him. No way in hell she saw the notification already. Panicked, he accidentally drops his phone off of the 30 Rock roof and rushes to catch it with a web. He ignores Nancy’s call, hoping to God that she doesn’t try calling again. He tries to catch his breath, thinks about putting his phone away, getting back on the streets or maybe just going home. But before he can a call goes out on his police scanner.

“10-75 1230 York Ave Building C” the monotonous dispatcher announces

10-75 is a fire. Jonathan’s trying hard to think of how he knows that specific address. He punches it quickly into his GPS and it clicks. Building C is the location of Harrington Labs at Rockefeller University. He puts his phone away, puts his mask back on and prepares to swing. So much for a quiet night.
