Fake Date

Remember that time when I used to write fanfics? Like, 84 years ago? I sure do

So here I freaking am trying to put the weeks on order by giving you Day 2 (Fisrt Date) of @jantomweek 

AND YES I KNOW IT’S BEEN ALMOST A YEAR AND I AM SORRY.

Also, I think this is a good time to explain when you can expect me to get into a celebration week, my rule it’s very simple actually: if I do the first day, I’m committed to doing the other ones.

But as you can see I have no freaking schedule to when I’ll be able to upload it.

This one gave me troubles for 2 reasons, The first, college I was still studying last year and it happened in exams week for me, and afterwards, I kinda got a writer block on jantom, so I went on my main fanfiction. Then on July, I graduated and I... had an existential crisis I guess? More or less like it, it’s just I got so used to have time to ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, that now that I graduated and got free time I thought on so much to do and so much time I got a bit overwhelmed by it... Just now I’m finally getting my writing rhythm back. Yaaaay :D

Fake Date

Janna stood there looking at the prince of the Underworld with the most indifferent face a human could ever manage to do it. Meanwhile, the demon was sitting there waiting for her answer as she calmly continued to drink her milk-shake.

“Ok…” She eventually said pointing at him with her milkshake straw, “So your plan is, get a date with a girl and somehow get to show in front of Star how well you court her so she misses her past with you and gets back to you?”

“Exactly.”

Janna frowned at him and opened her mouth to say something, but closed and sighed and looked away thinking again. She turned to him after two minutes talking again. “Ok, I have several questions about this.”

“Go ahead.” Tom nodded and got a bite of his sandwich.

“First and most important question, where?”

Tom blinked twice and replied nonetheless, “Huh, movies?”

“Which one?”

“The most popular?”

“Which is?!” Janna pressured.

“I don’t know?! Some hero movie?!”

Janna raised an eyebrow and leaned back in her seat crossing her legs and resting her feet on the seat beside them. “Ok, good enough. Second, for what insane reason you think this will work?”

“Because!” Tom replied a bit annoyed at her, “She’ll remember the time we were together! On how we had fun and it was nice, warm and how I held her hands in mine…”

The Filipino girl looked at him annoyed, “Are you crying?”

“No!” Tom quickly covered and looked at Janna annoyed, “Look, I have to try something that this might work, ok?!”

She shrugged, “We both know you’re completely wrong, but you’re so desperate I’ll pretend we both are ignorant about that fact, so…” She sipped more of her milk-shake “Third, why me of all people? You’re the prince of Underworld, you can literally ask any demons to help you with that.”

“And it would get my parents to hear about and they would begin to try to make the relationship real even if I were to explain it was just to show.”

“It can’t be that bad.”

“Have you seen my mother?!” Without waiting for the negative reply from Janna, the demon got his phone and began to browse on it until he found what he wanted and showed Janna “This is my mother.”

Janna grabbed his phone and looked at the picture of him in the horn of his mother and his father beside him, only her face was in the picture because it was all it could capture. He was expecting the “I got so many questions” people usually did, but she just shrugged and gave his phone back to him.

“She’s cute,” she replied, “though I was expecting your father to be the demon one.”

“He is, he just don't look like one.” The demon looked at her and frowned, “Aren’t you curious? About… how it was possible?”

The Filipino girl looked at her own phone sipping more of her milk-shake before replying, “Nah. I do get questions, but you should be the one who tells people whenever you want. Even if I ask if you didn’t want to reply you wouldn’t anyway. It’s easier to let you decide for yourself.”

Tom looked at her confused and brushed it off by remembering how Marco referred to her as “freak as hell”, but then… Well, he’s the prince of there and he didn’t see no problem.

“Next question,” Janna said taking her gaze away from the phone for a moment, “why me?”

“I just told you.”

“No, you said why not a demon. I want to know why me.”

Tom looked down embarrassed and trying not to sound offending as he replied sincerely “Because you have no boyfriend, no one in interest and would have no intention to be in a relationship, so… you’re the best option?” He said making a face of uncertain, but she just looked at him like she didn’t believe a word that he said, “Ok, it is because you’re the only one who might agree with this plan.”

“Huh…” Janna gave a slight nod and looked back at her phone sipping the milk-shake again. Tom was about to beg when she replied, “Fine. Under one condition.”

He sighed, it was expected. After all, he was asking too much. “Ok, what is it?”

“You owe me one and you’ll have no options to take that back.”

“Ugh, fine!” Tom said raising his hands in surrender. “I owe you one.”

Janna smiled and held his arm pulling him along with her as she went down the street. She showed him her phone before he asked where they were going, the screen was showing a status from Star saying she was enjoying her day at the park with the laser puppies along of a picture of the park on fire.

“The best way to do your plan it’s to be on the way to something planned and be casual about it, but coincidentally being around the person you’re stalking.”

Tom began to follow looking at her annoyed, “I’m not stalking her!”

The beanie girl shrugged throwing her empty cup of milk-shake in the trash can, “whatever makes you sleep at night.”

The most surprising thing out of that day had come at night.

Not because the rest wasn’t special, but because… Well, it was unexpected.

The “coincidental” encounter at the park was very smooth. Janna wasn’t clingy and wasn’t even holding his hands or anything, but having them together, saying they were going to the movies later and were there wasting time around for their session was enough to convince Star of their fake date. There was a curious stare of Star and a confused one by Marco, but they didn’t ask anything else, it was just proof they were not doubting of their word even if they were completely natural there and not looking like lovey-dovey couple.

When they went to the movies, Janna explained that if they were to keep contact and try to be super sweet to each other, then it would look fake. That being natural and friendly on each other was enough for them to think that they were in the beginning of dating. And after a certain thought, Tom realized she was right, even he and Star didn’t start off as a love at first sight and lovely from the start.

In movies, Janna almost convinced him to watch a movie about shades… But her smile was too wide and “innocent-trying” to convince him it was either a good movie or a good option… That and the fact it was for adults (which was no problem to him being a demon for longer than a human life could last.)

Watching the superhero movie was surprisingly fun, and Tom got himself enjoying both the movie and the company that would make silly jokes once in a while. It made him wonder how long it had been since he had done that, he sure went to watch Mackie Hand with Marco, but there was something else that made that moment special and enjoyable.

Maybe the fact he didn’t have to bring a dead person to live again to make Janna content? Or even try nothing at all? Maybe it was the fact there wasn’t any major interest in her company, so he wasn’t trying anything, just relaxing and getting in the moment…

That was probably it. He didn’t realize the major difference that made until the movie was over and they were in the exit.

“Ok, so we need a picture to post on Facebook to cover any suspicions that we weren’t doing what we said to be doing… Also because Star will see it.” Janna positioned the phone in front of her and smiled, “Come on, smile for the camera!” Even before he smiled at the camera she had already taken the picture, “Completely natural, perfect!”

Tom watched as she used her phone to post the picture on a quick caption on it. He gulped at the meaning of this. They saw Star, she was mostly convinced of their relationship, which meant the day, the date was over. He could finally go to his room and play some game until late night… Still didn’t felt appealing as before.

“Hey!” Tom jumped when the girl shouted at him, “Were you listening?”

“Oh, yeah… Sure why not?”

Janna just put her indifference face and crossed her arms, “Really?”

“Yeah.”

“Then you can tell me to what are you agreeing since I didn’t make a question?” Tom gulped, but she just rolled her eyes at him, “For the one who pulled the plan to fake date to try to get Star back you’re being very reckless and uncaring about it.”

“It’s just… Weird.” He replied motioning to her to walk with him whatever direction he was going, “It’s not like I am pretending or feel like I should do anything else to pretend… It comes naturally.” He shrugged. “Maybe it’s because you are not affected by my natural charm of being a demon.”

“Oh…” Suddenly he felt a firm tug on his shirt and before he could understand what was going on, Janna’s eyes were right in front of his and her face completely violating any law of personal space there could exist. She smirked at his shocked face, “What makes you think I’m not affected by that?” She leaned even closer still looking directly into his soul (Someone save him, he could feel her violating every single deep secret he had in there and worse, he might not mind that much) before leaning back and letting go of his shirt and turning around walking again “I’m just really good at playing it off and working on it. The first thing to learn about me is: I know how to play.”

Tom stood up fixing his shirt in a failed way to not think he didn’t mind that… At all.

“I’ll leave you home.”

Janna laughed “You mean across the street?”

The underworld prince looked up confused and stated that it was indeed Janna’s home. he went there without realizing when all he did was to walk and chat for a while. For good or bad, they were in the destination and there was nothing else to do…

Why he felt somewhat disappointed?

“Well, that’s my leave,” Janna said walking ahead of him.

“Wait!” Janna turned around and just then Tom realized he had screamed before forming a thought about it “I-uh… I owe you one right? How about we go in gaming station tomorrow?”

The Filipino descendant looked at him and smirked, she turned around walking to him again, her feet stopped in front of his and she leaned in his direction tip of her toes looking so deep in his eyes Tom almost felt like she was the devilish one of the duo.

“That’s true… You do owe me a big one…” Tom refused to recognize he shivered at her voice and how her finger touched his chest sliding a bit down and stopping in his heart as if she really had on her hands (maybe she did but he wouldn’t admit that… yet) “Don’t you?”

Her eyes went to his lips and Tom gulped in both expectation and awkwardness. Janna stepped back and went to the house again waving to him without looking back. “I decide how and when you pay me back”

When she turned around to look at him on the last time she was closing the door of her house, giving him a wink before closing.

Tom turned around and get on his way out of any possible line of vision or witness ears before taking his phone from his pocket and dialing the number on automatic.

“Finally!” Marco’s voice came from the other side, “How was the date?”

“It was cool.”

“Did she found out?”

“She might suspect a bit but I don’t think she figured out”

“Good for you. I still don’t get why you would go like this, but oh well” Tom could see Marco shrugging dismissing any kind of debate about his decision, “At least you had fun.”

“Yeah…” Tom looked up and sighed “She got me bad and I think she knows. She said herself she knows how to play!”

Marco began to laugh on the other side before replying, “You do have it bad.”

“As if we both didn’t know that.” Tom sighed, then looked up. The image of the girl who unexpectedly got him while he was actually chasing another imprinted on his mind. He didn’t know how it happened and why he was so helpless about it, he still refuses to accept some facts of all this.

Like the fact he enjoys every single bit of that whole torture and slow burn a lot.

“Hey, Marco?”

“Yeah?”

“Would you be my best man?”

Marco begins to laugh hysterically on the other side.

Wholesome Week 2 Day 2 ~ "Fifteen"

“Marco…,” rang a whisper, which was left unresponsive.

“Marco…!” the voice once more attempted. Still, there remained no answer but a toss of shoulders on a bed.

Growing impatient, the voice hissed, “MARCO DIAZ!”.

A pair of eyes shot open, looking straight above, leading to a scream.

Third time’s a charm, the voice’s owner thought. “Star?! What the heck are you doing?!” Marco had come to find Star standing right above his bed, hanging upside down, calling his name.

“C'mon, Marco! Don’t you know what today is?”

“Yeah! The day you almost scared me to death! You can’t just hang over someone’s bed and then scare them awake!”

“Psh, you’re fine! The one who should really be offended is me!”

“Star, you’re making no sense.”

Star hopped onto the floor and stood upright. She stared at Marco blankly, not making a sound.

He returned her look, until what Star had meant dawned upon him. He hopped out of his bed. “Oh my gosh. It’s our one-year friendship-iversary!”

Star smiled. “And?”

“…and the first time we fought Ludo?”

“Annd??”

“…a year since you set your kingdom on fire?”

“Besides that!”

“Oh, oh! I’ve got it now! It’s been a year that you’ve had your wand!”

Star smacked her head, then shook Marco. “It’s my fifteenth birthday!”

The boy’s eyes widened, then both of their smiles, too.

Suddenly, Star yelled, “Super confetti blast!”, and confetti showered the room, both teenagers bursting out with giggles and excitement.

“This is awesome! We have so much to celebrate… and do you know what this means?”

“I’m a year older than I was last year?”

“Fifteen birthday punches!” Marco began to chase Star across his room, as she had immediately began to run.

“No! No! Marco! No birthday punches!” She stopped firmly in her tracks, watching his every move.

He mirrored this behavior, arousing suspicions within her. Finally, he lifted both of his hands in the air in surrender. “Alright, alright- no birthday punches…”

“Good.”

“…just birthday tickles!”

Almost immediately, Star was on the ground, laughing hysterically. She quickly reached for her wand, pointed at Marco, and commanded, “Makeup blast!”, stopping him instantaneously.

He look in the mirror and groaned. His face looked like ‘Princess Marco’ all over again. “Great,” he laughed, following with a groan, “now I have to go clean my face.”

As, Marco left to the bathroom, Star received a call from her mother on her mirror.

“Star? Hello, Star- I need you to come to the castle today.”

“Gee, thanks, mom. I’m having a wonderful birthday so far.” Star muttered, sarcastically.

“I know it’s your birthday, but since you are now fifteen, we must celebrate with dinner, alongside the royal families of the other kingdoms. You do realize you are coming of age to find a husband?”

“Ugh, mom, I don’t want to sit around sipping tea and being proper with the other royals, and I most certainly am not planning on finding a husband.”

“Star, you must come-” Star ended the call midway in her mother’s sentence.

Coming out of the bathroom, Marco asked, “What was that all about?”

“My mom wants me to go to some stupid royal birthday dinner. Looks like we’re going to Mewni.” Before giving Marco the opportunity to have his output heard, Star quickly grabbed his dimensional scissors and opened a portal to the Butterfly Castle, dragging him inside.

“Hello, my not-so-little girl!” King Butterfly announced. “Hello, Marco!”

“Hey, dad!” she hugged her father.

“Ah, Star, I see you’ve followed my directions for once,” her mother said, arriving in the throne room where they stood.

“Now, why is it you request me here so early?”

“Honey, it’s your birthday! You must prepare for tonight’s dinner; you must 'wow’ the other kingdoms,” her father replied.

“Ugh, let’s get this done and over with. What are we doing?”

“Well, the servants shall make you look your best; they will do your hair, makeup, nails, and dress you… and, Star, you will wear your crown,” Queen Butterfly demanded. The young girl groaned.

“That sounds… constricting.” Marco whispered to Star, feeling sorry that as royalty, her parents limited her independence.

“Marco,” the Queen began. “Since Star has brought you here with us, you must also look proper for tonight’s dinner.”

“Uh, okay, thanks,” the boy answered, unsure of what his response should’ve been.

The Queen then waved her hand, commencing the servants’ preparation of each teenager for the night’s dinner. Being separated from one another, Marco’s attention lasted for two hours, while Star’s, five. While putting the finishing touches on her outfit, Marco knocked on Star’s door.

“Come in!”

Marco opened the door and entered the room. Star was hidden behind a screen which her mirror had converted into, just as she did when she prepared for the Blood Moon ball.

“Hey, Star. Almost ready?”

“Yeah, I just think my outfit is missing something.”

“Well, I know this is going to sound corny, but I think you’ll shine just like the star you are.”

“Aw, thanks- wait, that’s it! I know what I’m missing!”

“…You’re welcome?”

“Thanks. Now, super glitter blast!” A blast of glitter emerged from behind the screen, covering Star’s dress exactly the way she’d planned. “…And now, for the finishing piece.” Star pointed her wand toward her head, and finally, her crown appeared in her hair, but with a nice, personal touch: a few flowers and her horn headband.

“Alright, now I’m ready.” As Star stepped out from behind the screen, Marco looked up in full focus.

Star wore a matte satin, red ballgown with an off-shoulder neckline, and that made contact with the ground. The top of her gown was covered in roses, and the bottom of her dress shimmered like the stars in the night sky. She wore her hair in a loose half-up half-down curled style, with the crown and horns in the front to top it off. Her pink wings had grown over time, and shown in the back. With golden heels and earrings, she’d surely be the center of attention at the dinner.

Marco was left awestruck, and, without thought, he said, “You’re beautiful. I-I meant- it’s just- you look beautiful. Not beautiful- but pretty– not that you’re not beautiful but- ugh! You know.” He blushed and turned his head in the awkwardness and his panic.

Star’s face turned red as well. “Thank you, Marco. You look super handsome too…”

They stood in silence for a few moments, until Marco began to lean in closer to her, almost making contact with her until-

Moon Butterfly burst into the room. “Marco, I would like you to escort my daughter to the …Great Hall for dinner with the other royals within the next few minutes.” She then shut the door and left the pair in their awkwardness.

“So… I guess I should start 'escorting’ you to the Grand Hall?”

“Marco?”

“Star?”

“I’m glad I have you as such an amazing best friend.”

“Me too. I know I’ve said this, but you’re the best girl a guy could ever ask for.”

They took another moment to smile and stare at one another until Marco said, “Now, are you ready to go?”

“Ready as I’ll ever be,” she admitted.

Grabbing onto her hand, Marco led Star through the halls, then stopping in front of a huge door.

“Marco, this isn’t the grand hall. It’s the ballroom!”

“Well, I’ve never really been in this castle before. Why don’t we check it out anyway, maybe you could give me a mini-tour?”

“That’d be great.” Star pushed open the door, still with her smile.

“Surprise!” yelled a crowd of people within the room. In the group stood Star’s friends and the people she cared about most, excluding Marco: her mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Diaz, Ponyhead, Alfonso and Ferguson, Janna, Kelly, Starfan13, surprisingly, Tom, and many others. Many, many tables and decorations filled the room. A DJ occupied a corner of the room. Space had been left for the dance floor in the middle of the room. Long tables with rows of food had lines of people waiting behind it. The most important people in Star’s life occupied a single table, sitting in pairs of girls and guys; someone had paired Janna with Tom. One small table held a huge cake, reading 'Feliz Quinceanera, Star!“ A single spotlight shone on her.

"Marco- I don’t understand. The dinner? The royal families? My mother? Having to get ready for such a long time? What is all of this? Who did this?”

“It was all a set up. This is a Quinceanera, a special traditional party for a girl who is turning fifteen. I thought you deserved it, so I let everyone in on the surprise. There was never any royal dinner, we just needed an excuse to get you ready for the party. What do you think?”

“I think this is amazing! You did all of this for me?”

“I had help, and for a girl as special as you, I’d do anything.”

This time, it was Star who went in for a kiss with Marco, and it was this time she got it. The crowd cheered and whistled, and after a quick flush of cheeks, Star pulled Marco over to the cake table. Flashing her wand, Star made another cake appear next to the birthday cake, the new one saying 'Happy Friendship-iversary Star and Marco!’

The music played, and everyone was in much excitement. As Star sat, Marco sat beside her. “Remember the Blood Moon Ball?” he reminisced.

“Haha, yeah. According to legend, our souls were bonded that day. I hadn’t even known I was dancing with you. You have quite the moves, Marco Diaz.”

“Well, would you like to put the legend to the test?”

“How would we do that?”

“Would you like to dance with me?”

Amused, Star accepted the request she’d been awaiting, being led to the dance floor. “I thought you’d never ask. Now show me what you’ve got!”

How about a small enigmatic of the moment Tom realized he was doo.ed and had a thing for Janna? I don't know, like, she does something and turns around to go home and he keeps staring at her in amusement and then clicks and he's like "oh crap"

1. It’s hard to beat @moringmark ‘s comics, especially the one with the claw machine where Tom goes “I’m so in love right now”, but I tried my best!

2. I definitely uhhhhh went overboard with this one. Not only did I create an 11-panel comic, fully lined, colored, and with a background (most likely won’t happen in the future), I also studied by rewatching “Junkin’ Janna” and “Jannanigans” haha!

3. The style and quality shifted a lot because I did this over a week. I never drew these characters before (or svtfoe in general), so I started out sketchy and closer to the shows style. Over time I changed to sketching before hand then lining them. I personally think the quality picks up after panel 7. (I even made a detailed background which I, like, never do.)

Starco Fic Recs

Disclaimer: This list is largely curated to my own personal preferences (minimal feelings angst, minimal AUs, character development >>> plot) and has a fairly high bar for quality in characterization, etc. There will likely be many popular/beloved fics that I really don’t think highly of at all and therefore don’t make the cut. Feel free to DM me things you think I should consider adding, but I make no promises.

And of course I’d be flattered if you gave my own works a chance - stop by my About Me section for links! Thus far I’m particularly proud of the post-canon series I just started in collaboration with an awesome team, The Greatest Gift.

(Updated 9/26 - I decided to redo the list since people might appreciate seeing it in the tags again. To anyone whose own work is featured here that I haven’t personally responded to - I’m a tough critic with a lot of strong personal preferences so PLEASE do not take my gripes as condemnations of your skills - if they make the list at all, I think they’re worth a read!)

Must-Reads

Forevermore - A Starco wedding story (with a bit of Jantom as well). Simply one of the best fics I’ve read in the fandom. I have no meaningful criticism to give it, and that’s the highest praise I can possibly give something.

Monarchs of Mewni (+ Traditionally Lovingly Yours) - A series of chronologically disconnected oneshots set years after the show. The backstory is very dated given how long ago it started (Jarco was kinda serious for a few years, Tomstar v2 never happened, etc) but overall it’s lovely. Has a bit of plot, a bit of Jantom, a lot of other character interactions, and a boatload of Starco - plus a Starco kid who is a decently developed character but also doesn’t just take over and crowd out Star and Marco themselves! That alone deserves merit.

Ruined - Aftermath of a hypothetical return of Monster Arm. Angst with a happy ending (and one of the few angsty fics that gets my seal of approval), so read this extra early if that’s more your schtick than mine.

study buddies - Y’know what, fuck it, I’m putting this here. It’s a short ball of Starco fluff but it’s one of the sweetest and fluffiest fluffballs I’ve seen in a long time and it’s very emotionally immersive and y’all needa read it.

*When Two Worlds Collide - One of my favorite postcanon series thus far. I admit I’m really not big on “magic returns!” plots in postcanon (which this has), and the sections that focus on that are hit or miss for me, but overall it has some of the funnest and cutest characterization and gags I’ve seen in any SVTFOE fic, ever. Absolutely worth following (and it has a fair amount of art to go along with it!)

***Star Chef - Oneshot (two chapters, so twoshot technically?) set in the same universe as Starlight Justiciar (see below) and is just a day in the life of Star and Marco. Goes absolutely above and beyond at emotional immersion and little nuances and details to bring the world and characters to life, which elevates it to something special to me.

Light of the Sun and Stars - (Promoted to Must-Read!) One of the few heavily divergent AU fics I care for. Marco is an orphan raised by monsters, and meets Star after running away. Just finished its “first season” and I've loved the recent chapters, am very excited to see where it goes.

*Don’t You Let Me Go - Wonderfully fluffy post-Cleaved Starco, one of my favorite oneshot “epilogues”.

i want to tell you (but i don’t know how) - Post season 3 fic detailing the growth of Star and Marco’s relationship. It’s spectacular writing and shows off a lot of the true depth of Starco beyond just being cute.

Adult - NSFW warning, non-explicit (aged-up characters). It’s a story about the journey towards Star and Marco’s first step into adulthood together -  it’s not graphic and way more focused on the emotions involved, but it still is definitely more explicit than your average FFnet rated-T fic. If sexual themes ain’t your thing, I totally respect that, but this is a charming and funny piece of writing.

Lawchan’s various oneshots - There isn’t a great compilation for them right now so the best I can do is give you her tag for it and you can comb through it yourself. I like some more than others here, but they’re all very well-written - my only gripes with some of them are my own tastes in subject matter, so have fun perusing this on your own.

I figured with the show being over, and so many people starting their own series, I should include a lot of them here even if I’m personally not the biggest fan just to help gather them up so people can decide for themselves. Little bit looser on judgment here.

*Life on Earthni A to Z - Non-chronological postcanon slice of life oneshots, Starco and some Globclipsa and Jantom. Overall really good so far, one of my favorites in terms of direction.

*When Dimensions Cleave (sequel - Unforgettable Getaway) - Another postcanon series hellbent on bringing back magic queen lore, but it has some solid Starco fluff still. Credit where it’s due, the “Star constantly freaking out over what a horrible person she was” bit that I called preachy in the prior rec post gets somewhat less preachy and does end up actually going somewhere as part of character development, but I’m left scratching my head at how they all act sometimes. The good parts are certainly good, though, and in terms of quantity of lovey dovey Starco, it really can’t be beat (especially the sequel) and that’s worth something by itself. 

We’re a Miracle - Extra adorkable postcanon fluff. Lighter on the “but ACKSHUALLY MAGIC IS BACK” stuff compared to the others, but it’s there, like almost every postcanon fic in existence.

Star vs the Sands of Time - Heavy politic/lore postcanon fic, not my fav but if that’s more your thing then great. Has some casual Starco too.

Longer Series

*The Inescapable Us - Really tropey miscommunication will-they-won’t-they type of thing. Not my fav, especially now that the show is over and finished that leg of Star and Marco’s story once and for all (I’m personally WAY less interested in things that redo something canon already did). However, where it’s at now has some really good Starco moments. Fully admitted that I hella skimmed most of it until the parts I enjoyed, but And if you’re more fine with that type of thing then you’ll probably really like it, it’s well-written otherwise.

Together We Fall - Throwback S2 AU fic where Star and Marco go to the dance together instead and Toffee makes moves earlier. Gets kinda dark but has a lot of nice Starco along the way.

Safer, Sorrier - A recent rewrite of an older fic, Better Safe Than Sorry, where Star has to leave early to become queen and Marco is alone for a few months before they reunite. A very dated premise (post season 1 ish) but quite good.

Sugar and Spice - NSFW warning, non-explicit (NOT aged-up characters). In this fic, Star and Marco have gotten together after BFM, and a spell gone wrong leads to Mewberty relapses with obvious consequences. This fic has adorable Starco moments, but what I love this for above all is the other character interactions (especially Glossaryck and Star’s parents). This is probably a controversial add-on to the list, but I stick by my decision - if the subject matter isn’t your thing, then by all means avoid it.

Beyond Dimensions - Plotfic + established Starco where some ancient sorceress has to trap Star to escape and try to take over Mewni. Maybe y'all are more into plot stuff than me but the Starco that’s there is quite good regardless.

Starfall - NSFW warning, explicit (aged-up characters). Probably the most popular one to make the cut. Star and Marco are forced apart and have to find their way back together. Very old fic, lot of dated stuff here, and the narration and plot itself can get kinda questionable sometimes, but it has a lot of good Starco and some interesting plot elements that make it, in my opinion, worth a read despite a lot of flaws. A few epilogue chapters contain rather explicit sexual content, so be wary of that (and the epilogue itself after Ep 6 kinda transitions into a nextgenverse, so maybe just skip that entirely).

The Star Butterfly Effect - The sole fic on the list that is purely plot-based, with very little actual Starco development whatsoever. I can’t even really explain it, just give it a shot and see what you think; I was rather engrossed by the plot, and that’s rare for me.

The Princess and her Knight, Return of the Empire The former fic in this series is way more character-based, while the latter is very heavy plot stuff. Pretty decent character writing with some fluff. There’s a third that I honestly can’t recommend because I completely dropped it because it was just a nonstop war story.

Experimental - REALLY heavy, dark AU where Star and Marco are tortured and corrupted. It’s pretty decent.

Blood Moon Blitz - Alt BFM fic of Marco going to fight Toffee with Star. unfortunately dropped without completing, but what’s there is pretty solid.

The Sign of the Moon, The Dance of the Stars - Starts post-3A, involves the growth of Star and Marco’s relationship as they take on foes in and out of the castle and learn more about the Blood Moon. This series is rather… melodramatic, and there were some chapters and character interactions I flat out did not enjoy reading. But some people aren’t as strict on character interpretations as I am and would love such a long plot-based Starco fic, so overall I still will at least list it and let you decide for yourself. There might be a third entry in this series now, but I dropped it before then.

Photos - I hesitate to include this one here because the “Tom is a perfect angel who must sacrifice his love for Star” thing pisses me off. But just skip all that (and ignore the random “a part of me will always love Tom” line) and it’s a really nice post-s3 confession fic.

Junkin’ Janna and the Future

okay. A lot happened this week’s episodes and more importantly a lot happened to set up the endgame relationships. But I want to talk specifically about Junkin’ Janna and this significance of the message of this episode

Let there be no mistake this was definitely a Jantom episode. And I made another post earlier this week abut the foreshadowing of Jantom. Now its become even clearer. But a specific scene in this episode showed what the future was gonna be for one specific couple. And I’m talking about Startom.

This episode was about letting go of certain things in order to move forward in life. Which is exactly what ended up happening for both Tom and Janna. However, on was more significant than the other. 

Throughout the episode Janna shows annoyance about Tom’s constant need to check in on Star and ignoring what they were just doing. She wasn't annoyed with him. But his unhealthy obsession with Star. Right when he’s starting to get out of his shell he goes back to texting and sending selfies to Tom. This sets up the ultimate climax at the end of the episode. 

Janna on the other hand revels that she only brought Tom along to blast a bird who’s been taking her cool stuff every time she finds something. at the end of this episode this all changes. 

The scene of significance and The end of Tomstar

When Tom and Janna got into Butterfly castle in order to get Janna’s boot back But that decisions come from a very interesting thing Janna says “Look, I need my booth and you need your compact.”  Tom and her work together in order to get her boot back and they get along quite nicely. 

However things don't go as planned and the bird turns out to be monster creature and then attacks Janna. 

Janna then decides that the boot isn’t worth it. She just wants to leave and to live. so she leaves that desire behind. This isn't that surprising given that Janna just wants to live. But this is important because Janna said before entering the castle that she “needs” her boot and Tom “needs” his compact.

But what is surprising is what happens directly after

Tom goes in front of Janna to save her. But what he uses is his phone the same phone that he has been using to keep in contact with Star throughout the episode. Now I’ve talked about phones in a previous post and how they foreshadowed romance with their phone cases. I talked about how Janna’s phone case replicated many things in Tom’s underworld. But I didn't see anything out the ordinary with Tom’s can that pointed to anything in particular romance wise. But that’s because its not what was on the case that mattered, but what was on the inside of the screen that did. 

Tom using his phone itself is significant because of that fact alone. But what really sets in stone my conclusion is the fact that Star’s name is explicitly on the screen with a new text from her. 

But that’s not all. In the phone above you see a crack in the keyboard alone. But a second later, the whole phone screen shatters. This marks the nd of Star and Tom’s relationship. Tom gave up his phone but he also gave up Star in order to protect Janna. And this also proves that they didn't “need” that stuff. But really each other

And by the look on Janna’s face, she’s just as shocked as we are. 

That moment changes everything. Janna sees Tom in a new light. Her face doesn't change for a good couple of moments after he saves her She’s in genuine shock about what just happened and what Tom did for her. Things. have. changed. Between the both of them and Janna is the only one who can see the truth in that immediately. Tom still isn't aware of what exactly has changed.

Now. What does this mean? What does Janna have to do with Tom and Star’s breakup?

The answer to both questions is very interesting. What does this mean? Star and Tom’s relationship is at the end of their line and will come to an end soon. 

What does Janna have to do with the breakup? Nothing directly. This episode just shows that the chemistry between Janna and Tom is very strong and very reminiscent of Star and Marco’s relationship in season one. Janna has nothing to do what why Star and Tom will break up. But she does have everything to do what what will happen after. 

This episode exists for a reason. Their interactions are reminiscent for a reason. Tom and Janna we ill become a couple in the future after Tom and Star break up. and I think that their romantic development will most likely happen in "Jannanigans.” 

Overall, This episode was about Tom and Janna letting go of something they though they needed. They fought and argued over these things. But when it came down to eminent danger they dropped all those things and focused on each other and keeping each other safe. Tom more so than Janna because Janna is used to taking care of herself and didn’t expect anything from Tom. Once again this is very much like season one Starco. Janna’s face in that last photo proves that she wasn’t expecting Tom to do anything for her but is grateful none the less. and in the final shots of the episode we see that Janna and Tom's body language has changed from acquaintance to something else.

We now see that Janna’s feelings for Tom really has changed. I wouldn't say it’s romantic as of yet. But that's what "Jannanigans" is for.

Sigh, I hate to pester you with ship-related questions but, I know Janna ends up bringing up a good point about Tom needing to get a life, but since Tom doesn't seem to learn anything in the end, the whole subplot just boils down to a minor Jantom tease and a set up for the Wham Shot with Mina's armor. (1/2)

I know the issue will probably come back in the future when Tomar's end is near, but the ep seems to also suggest an eventual Pair the Spares between these two despite also showcasing why Janna might be bad romantically (even worse than Star) for Tom. She essentially manipulated him to do what she wanted and being a hypocrite about Tom's compact too. Unless Jannanigans (or whatevs) makes me respect Janna's relationship with Tom more, eventual Jantom is still pretty concerning to me.

It’s true that the episode didn’t develop things for Tom as much as I would have liked, but it still introduce and absolutely fundamental theme and question

The kids in this show, they’re impressively dumb. They need to be slapped in the face by reality again and again to actually grow, and as such the simple act of making a theme that had been going on since S3 this explicitly is extremely important, providing a priceless precedent for future developments (potentially next week already, since we get a Tom / Marco episode?). Also you’re right about the manipulation, ultimately Janna and Tom enjoyed themselves, but she was clearly not fully depicted in a good light in this segment, we’ll see where this goes. Still, I think it was actually a good choice to use Janna: it’s in her personality to make remarks like that to Tom, it fits, but at the same time it’s in her personality not to get any deeper into it, and this allowed the episode not to develop things too much and have Tom just begin to potentially have the seed of doubt planted into him - had something like this happened with Marco, other than feelings deeply out of place given their precedents, it’d have needed to lead to major developments for sure.

All in all I think they used this pairing in this episode to give more screentime to Janna, since they clearly like the character (and I do, too!) while also introducing a theme for Tom with a context that allowed it not to be immediately developed. I wouldn’t be too worried about Jantom, honestly, seems like they might purely go for “Wow the more friends I have the happier I am maybe it’s not dating that I really need!”.

Very happy to see Buff Frog again, and also his children but older now. (still cute!) I am a little sad that Star and Marco had no interactions, which is strange, considering their feelings are “gone”, but i ain’t buying it. They’re problably avoiding each other, because oh i don’t know, the curse had no effect on them in the first place! Ahem, anyways, next weeks episodes have me feeling a tiny bit hopeful, because Star and Marco are gonna spend more time together, and because we’re getting a Janna and Tom episode. Not saying anything crazy will happen, but Jantom is my second favorite ship after Starco. The week after is a Tom and Marco episode. This will most likely not happen but let me explain. Tom “discovers” that he can have fun even without Star (lowkey cuz of Janna, since Star always spends more time with Marco) he sees that maybe its time to let Star go. Tom then goes on to talk to Marco about this, and maybe on their dragon cycling adventure they get into a high stress situation where Marco reveals his feelings for Star have not changed, and was hiding them for the sake of their relationship, like in Divide/Conquer. This would explain why hes distracting his self with Kelly. (i’m evil i know) Will most likely not happen but i can dream, yall.

My current guesses for Knight Shift to A Spell With No Name

Before the episode descriptions dropped, I was guessing we might see some Tomstar to balance out the fun bit of Kellco last week. Instead it looks like the opening animation lineup will become a ship map:

Janna - Tom - Star - Marco - Kelly

I’ve been skeptical about Jantom considering their almost utter lack of interaction in CotBM but the episode description of Junkin’ Janna and how it fits in with other stuff ... yeah, it’s headed in that direction.

The Knight Shift

early guess: Maybe just comedic fluff because the Mewni Knights are usually just comic relief

pre-Tuesday guess: After Ghost of Butterfly Castle, I noticed that the donut patrol has been conspicuously absent. They weren’t around to investigate the yada yada attempt. They haven’t been doing their duty keeping Butterfly Square from descending into lawless anarchy. Where are the knights? Maybe the title means the Knights have shifted their loyalties and join Mina in opposing Queen Eclipsa?

current guess: I am guessing this may be about Star becoming Eclipsa’s knight. Others seem to have guessed this is about Marco becoming a knight but that honestly didn’t occur to me. To me it feels more natural for Star to become a knight because she’s the most powerful fighter in the land. I feel like Marco’s still more “Squire” material than “Knight” material.

And I feel like the imagery of Star kneeling to Eclipsa would aesthetically echo the imagery of Mina kneeling to Moon. I feel like this would be more dramatic and moving, considering the close emotional bond Star has forged with Eclipsa, compared to Marco (who has already made a lifelong oath of loyalty to Star anyway).

Either way, it’s still possible for the episode title to have a double meaning involving the Mewni Knights. Where are they and what are they doing? I don’t think they’re doing their job.

From the start, I was guessing Mina kidnaps Queen Eclipsa. The most obvious queen to be kidnapped would be Queen Eclipsa, and who the heck would be crazed enough to try and kidnap Queen Eclipsa? Mina Loveberry, of course.

early guess: Silly comedy fluff

pre-Tuesday guess: Silly comedy fluff, but with some Tomstar mixed in to balance out Kellco from the previous week

current guess: Jantom episode. My guess is that we’ll something similar to Freeze Day. Tom has the most fun he’s had like ... ever. And he’ll have some realization that his relationship with Star has problems. If it follows along with Freeze Day, then it will result in Tom resolving to try and do something about these problems (rather than him falling immediately into Janna’s loving arms).

A Spell with No Name

early guess: One of those “inside the wand” episodes, but with the interesting twist that Star isn’t wielding the wand. So I was hoping for some sort of weird new “inside the wand” environment.

pre-Tuesday guess: Same as above.

current guess: I really have no guesses beyond what’s in the episode description. However, it’s in the 4 slot so I expect there will be some plot development going on. Possibly even accidentally freeing Globgor? Or maybe something to do with the spell book fragment? Too many possibilities to guess.
