Crate Digger’s Corner: 2017 Albums, Pt. 2!

Crate Digger’s Corner…by DJ Musically Rich
Here is the second part to my 2017 list. For those that missed the first part (and haven’t taken a look at it yet), I’m giving a quick list of albums that I heard from 2017 in 7-10 at a time. There will be a few more parts to the list over the coming weeks. I may do a listening to some of the ones that I know I like, but want to revisit, and use that as an opportunity to review some of those more deeply (If there are any you see that you would particularly like to see a review of, leave a note). This list does not include reissues, live material or compilations.
Artist- Album (general genre)- and brief description
R. Stevie Moore & Jason Falkner- Make It Be (Indie Pop)- Eccentric and eclectic alt pop artists join forces to make an album with the vibe of the ‘60s psychedelic movement, but with all the studio and effects technology of today!
Father John Misty- Pure Comedy (Indie Pop)- Sounding like a lost ‘70s Elton John masterpiece, this is the album to hear from FJM up to this point (6/23/19). This is also his most grandiose album by far, and manages to get everything working perfectly from the musicians involved.
Jose James- Love In A Time Of Madness (Space R&B/Funk)- This album is a groovy, spacey adventure whether he is getting down with an upbeat disco groove, or riding a slow jam into space. This is another brilliant album in his canon.
Joey Bada$$- All-Amerikkkan Bada$$ (Rap)- This is my pick for the best rap album (that I heard) in 2017. It is an intense look at the society that some are living in today. It musically encompasses rap, R&B, a little electro and more.
Kendrick Lamar- Damn (Rap)- Seemingly, everyone else’s pick for best rap album of 2017. He is my favorite current rapper (and maybe ever). This is a bit on the poppier side of the rap universe, especially compared to his previous effort, “To Pimp A Butterfly”. That is similar to the way that “Good Kid…” was poppier compared to his “Section 80”. If he continues this cycle underground rap fans should be prepared for his next release! He only seems to get better!
Roger Waters- Is This the Life (Classic Rock)- The Pink Floyd founder takes the temperature of the political climate and picks up where he left off with “The Wall”. He even uses some of the same (or very similar) melodies in the songs. Whether you like this or not will probably depend heavily on your feeling about “The Wall”. This one, because it is not a movie soundtrack and therefore doesn’t have some of the strange shorter pieces that plague “The Wall” (particularly the end of side 2) as solely an album, may actually hold together a little better as an album. However, it obviously does not have the hit singles (nor anything quite as strong as the peaks) of “The Wall”.
Fleet Foxes- Crack-Up (Indie Rock)- The Fleet Foxes return with their soothing vocal harmonies floating over their pastoral musical beds. One big difference, and it causes this to be the weaker than the Fleet Foxes first EP or first two LPs, is the lack of drummer J. Tillman who left the band shortly after “Helplessness Blues” and started focusing on his solo career as Father John Misty. [Side Note: I believe there were some disagreements about the musical direction between him and the band as well] With a host of drummers coming in to fill that slot for various songs, the album lacks a groundedness that was present on their first 3 releases. Because of that, the songs never quite build the same steam as they were able to reach on previous albums, but still a solid listen and it shouldn’t disappoint any fans of their earlier albums.
Here are 7 albums I heard in 2017, there will be more from this list coming in the future, and this isn’t necessarily a ranking, just in the order that I was writing them down. I hope you enjoy and happy hunting!

Beck Colors tour breakdown - “The New Pollution”
pink eyes looking to the fruit of the ages
“The New Pollution” was basically played every night of the Colors tour, except for a handful of shortened festival sets, and, for some reason, in Europe. On the European leg of the tour, Beck dropped it for the first 6 shows, before bringing it back for 5 of the last 6. In the end, it was done at 47 of the main 59 shows of the tour. For this, I listened to about 25 of them.
Colors tour lineup
Beck Hansen - vocals, tambourine (most of the time) Jason Falkner - electric guitar, backing vocals Roger Joseph Manning Jr. - synthesizer, tambourine, backing vocals Dwayne Moore - bass, backing vocals Chris Coleman - drums Alex Lilly - percussion, backing vocals, tambourine (2nd half of tour) Cecilia Della Peruti - backing vocals, tambourine (1st half), electric guitar (2nd half) Jake Sinclair - acoustic guitar, backing vocals So “The New Pollution” actually had two different versions on this tour, one for the first half, one for the second half. I’ll start with the first half, which is pretty simple, as it was basically identical to the version you hear on Odelay -- all three verses, well-timed drops of the sax riff, a little funky synthesizer jam solo, everything was replicated on the stage. It was, and remains, a crowd-pleaser. Beck seemed to particularly enjoy Roger’s synthesizer solo, giving him a shout-out of “Manthing!!” every night as he started. Me, I was usually struck by Jason’s atmospheric guitar, especially towards the end of the song. He gave the song a bit of a roar.
youtube
You can really hear when Jason dives in with some cool guitar at the end. Early on in the tour, I think the band played this song a little flat, but really by this point it’s pretty jumping and reaaaaaaaaaaaaaal funky.
A few nights after this show, in Nashville, Beck had his opening band, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band come out and join him for a handful of songs. One they did was “New Pollution.” I am not aware of a recording, but having a real horn section do the sax riff was certainly cool!
So then after the Europe tour, Beck and his band made a bunch of little adjustments to a number of the songs they’d been doing. One of these was “The New Pollution.” Obviously the song remains “The New Pollution,” with the incessant rhythm and the sax and stuff, but some of the connective tissue was refined a little. Here are the changes:
The intro to the song was changed from the “doo doo da doo doo” tape to the seductive sax riff. I think the “doo doo” bit was a good clue for the audience that the song was starting, though the sax riff is a more dramatic style build, the way it slides into the beat. Both are good avatars for the song, and both work as introductions.
After going to the first two verses and choruses, as said, early on Roger would slide into the song’s funky synth solo. For this second half of the tour, they swapped this out, and Jason Falkner would play a guitar solo there instead. He didn’t try to mimic the synth part either, coming up with his own thing. Beck usually called out Jason as he started, as he had with Roger. I like this change, it brings another sound to the song, putting a little rock and roll in there with the funk and sax.
Lastly, the band dropped the third verse/chorus of the song entirely, replacing it by going into a short cover of The Creation’s “Making Time.” (A cool song you may know from the greatest movie ever.) One of the first times they did this, in Montreal, Beck messed up and started to sing the third verse anyway, before realizing and getting into “Making Time.” He got used to it though, and seemed to always dig singing that cover!
That’s the version from the second half of 2018. It’s pretty awesome. Here is a version from Red Rocks:

*LONG POST WARNING* I want to share a story that's very important to me. This moment was one of the greatest in my life. If any of you have looked at past posts, you'll know what a fan of musician Jason Falkner I am. His music helped me through some of the hardest times in my life & is a part of me. Early 2019, I saw that @beck was coming to Upstate NY (Beck has also been an idol of mine for over 25 years.) I knew that Jason is a member of Beck's band (along with @rogerjosephmanning). I believed this was my only chance to actually see Jason perform. I bought tickets to both UNY shows. A friend of mine had Jason as a guest on his podcast & I was able to submit a question for him. I light-heartedly asked if I could buy him a drink when he came to NY & Jason said definitely. I was excited but took it as just friendly banter. Then 2019 took a dark turn. Some things were going badly in my life, including my health. The thing I had to look forward to was the chance to see my heroes perform. I sent Jason a message asking if it was possible to meet at 1 of the shows. To my surprise Jason wrote back & said absolutely. I was thrilled! The show was only a couple of months away & I had a serious health issue that was going to require major surgery. It was scheduled the night of the concert. So I asked the dr. if it would be OK to delay a few days so that I could go to the show (If it went bad, I had already fulfilled a life goal!) He agreed. Earlier in the year, I had ended up canceling one set of tickets-- I really needed the money. Soon, the week of the concert finally arrived-- a few days away. Day of the concert that I had skipped had arrived (or so I thought). Something told me to look at the dates. Turns out the show I skipped was later in the week & the actual date was NOW! It had started and was hours away. I had switched the dates in my head. Devastated. Fortunately, I was able to get (expensive!) tix to the later date. I messaged Jason, and he made it a point to coordinate with me for the meetup! I didn't miss him! This was a life-changing moment for me. I will be forever grateful to Jason. Thank you, sir. For everything. I'll never forget it. #jasonfalkner (at Live Nation Concerts at Darien Lake Amphitheater) https://www.instagram.com/p/CJ62sj0FYAZ/?igshid=12q6w2pwdrvkp

Beck Colors tour breakdown “Take Me With U”
It’s in your eyes
A little busy, so throughout today, I will put up a few of the songs Beck did this year just once or twice. First up, is this cover, the second track from Prince’s Purple Rain album, “Take Me With U.” Beck of course has been covering Prince for years, and even this year did another one at most of his shows. In September, Beck started a new leg of his tour in Minnesota, and for the occasion, introduced this cover into the acoustic band portion of his set. That’s a cool place for it, as Prince’s original is hardly an acoustic song, instead a synthpop masterpiece. Beck and his band are slightly under-rehearsed on this, but it’s still a joy. Colors tour lineup: Beck Hansen - acoustic guitar, vocals Jason Falkner - acoustic guitar Alex Lilly - dulcimer, backing vocals Cecilia Della Peruti - backing vocals Jake Sinclair - mandolin Roger sometimes adds keys to these acoustic sections from the background, but he doesn’t seem to be doing that here. Chris Coleman actually worked with Prince as his drummer for a bit, but he’s not on this one. Dwayne Moore also is not there, surprisingly. But for whatever reason, this cover was just a one-time, Minnesota-only, thing. They did not do it again, as enjoyable as this is:
youtube
Over the years, Beck has covered these Prince songs: “Take Me With U,” “Raspberry Beret,” “Controversy” (once with Arcade Fire), and “Erotic City.” He has also done half-covers/references to “Purple Rain” and “Kiss”.

For some reason, when I think of @st_vincent I call her Annie Oakley, and always have to correct it to #AnnieClark. Appropriate mistake, as they are both bad ass women of their generations. • I’ve seen more shows than I can even count or remember. But few are as unforgettable as a #StVincent show. She is one of the best guitar players out there, monster player with an amazing rapport playing along with @reallyjasonfalkner.. Bringing #JasonFalkner as the touring guitar player has visions of David&Mick, Nikki&Vince, Dave&Eddie, Mick&Keith, Steve&Joe, Bruce&Clarence dancing around in my head. The legendary stage presence of the best pairings in Rock&Roll history. • If you get a chance to go see this tour. Get out there! Few dates left this year with a larger schedule in 2022. • #NYC #ILoveNY #I❤️NY #Manhattan #BigApple #RichardAgudelo #RicAgudelo #Photographer #Photographing #Photography #RespectCopyright #© #©RichardAgudelo https://www.instagram.com/p/CVHeNB_g_0j/?utm_medium=tumblr

Working with Nigel on Can You Still Feel was fantastic. He was the first guy I worked with that was younger than I was. In the past, I was always the baby. He was 25 (and he looks like a little kid) and he'd already done OK Computer and made a mint off of Natalie Imbruglia. We went to New Orleans and made the record at Daniel Lanois' Kingsway Studio. Nigel wanted to do it here in L.A., but I suggested we go someplace where no one has an advantage, because I live here and I know everyone here. Plus, living here, I've got all these distractions. So we were cooped up in this mansion that was Daniel's studio... ...Yeah, it was literally on old-style mansion in the French Quarter, with candles everywhere. Daniel had an incredible API desk with graphic EQs on each fader. I think he's right around the corner now. He moved his whole setup right here to Silver Lake. Anyway, working with Nigel was really good. He's fast, like I am. He doesn't like to labor all day on the snare drum. There's no way I would do that - I'd be down at the pub! He kinda does things like I do. He's not really a perfectionist. People might think of him as a lab-coat-wearing scientist. But he's not. He's like, [Jason puts on his best accent here] "Put a mic on it, who cares, put a mic on it." He's got a really good ear. He uses the same equipment we're all using. It's not like he's hoarding one little piece of forgotten gear that no one else has access to. He's a very natural talent... ...I think [Nigel's vison] evolves with the song. Since he doesn't really write with any of the bands he works with, he starts by getting the sense of the song, and he likes to take things to outer-space a little bit. You know how he's recognized for his feed-backing delay? I think he's getting away from that. He did use his Alan Smart C2 Compressor a lot. It has a crush button on it. He'd push it, and go "Listen to that!" When we first got together, in one of our first conversations, I told him I wanted the record to sound like it was already coming off the radio - like in the '70s, as a child. The sound of those Heart records and early Aerosmith records was incredible. At times we went a little overboard with compression, but it's so easy to overdo because it's such a satisfying sound.
