BOTD: Java Sparrow
Photo: J. N. Stuart
"A small, plump finch with a very thick pink bill. The black head and white cheek patch are distinctive. Juveniles have a similar color pattern but are grayer. Social; forages in flocks and roosts communally. Forages in rice fields, grasslands, meadows, and urban and suburban areas (in introduced range). Call consists of one or more musical chirps. Native to the Indonesian islands of Java and Bali, where now quite rare. Introduced widely across the globe including India, Philippines, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, and the Hawaiian Islands."

I personally love Pootoo birds and Java Finches if you would like to do one of those!
Your in luck! I actually have a whole race sheet for the pootoo as well as a legend here:
I have actually done quite a bit of research for them and am happy to give you a personal take on what one may look like in the world of animalia.
However in the spirit of my 5 second research fix I will do Java finches.
With my 5 seconds of research, I found that Java finches are a bird that has been bred by humans for quite some time and thus are considered quite tame. they have many different morphs and have a love for grain fields like rice.
My 5 second animalia take: there is a Java finches out there who spends much of their time as a butler to a large rice barron. They don't work in the fields themselves as their job is more to maintain the Barron's house, but on their days off they can be found walking through the rice fields inspecting the crop... or that's what they want you to think.
Secrectly, they are looking for rice plants or grains that are of top quality and will secretly place the rice in their pocket or bag. They then will take the rice home to their own secret rice field where they will experiment with the high-quality rice in an attempt to splice a rice plant together and make the most delectable rice in the world. Their rice patch is small, but the rice they grow within it is like nothing anyone else has ever seen...or rather, tasted.

bird of the day: the java sparrow

the java sparrow is a small passerine bird native to parts of indonesia (though it has established feral colonies in other places). the java sparrow is also known as the java finch and the java rice-eating bird.
like the name rice-eating bird may imply, in some places the java sparrow has become an agricultural pest. naturally, the sparrow feeds off of grains and seeds, but they have been known to feed extensively in rice paddies. this has led to regulations on the sparrow, particularly in the us. in the state of california, it is illegal altogether to own a java sparrow.
despite this, the java sparrow remains a popular, well-loved pet. records of this bird in captivity date back to ming dynasty china. the java sparrow has remained a common pet in much of the world. it’s popularity in the us declined after laws were put in place banning import of wild birds. however, it is still well-known and well-loved. the java sparrow is known in captivity for its friendliness, ability to be a part of a mixed-species aviary, and relatively low maintainence.

in the wild, java sparrows live in large flocks. males and females are almost impossible for humans to tell apart, as they share the same plumage. however, the male performs a song and dance the female does not. java sparrows nest in trees, or buildings if given the opportunity, and raise 3-8 eggs.

unfortunately, recently the java sparrow has faced a decline in numbers. habitat loss and hunting have caused the java sparrow’s decline. they are now listed as vulnerable by the iucn. hopefully, this trend reverses and they become as common in the wild as they are in our households.

The Java sparrow, also known as Java finch, Java rice sparrow or Java rice bird, is a small passerine bird. This estrildid finch is a resident breeding bird in Java, Bali and Bawean in Indonesia. It is a popular cage bird, and has been introduced into many other countries.
Are Java sparrows good pets?
These birds make ideal pets for people who don't have enough time to bond and interact with a parrot or other bird; they do not require out-of-cage playtime. As long they have another bird and plenty of toys, they're great at entertaining themselves.
